JAPAN INFORMATION
Sokunshinbutsu – Self
Mummified Deities
When mummies were found in Northern Japan,
researchers initially thought that they were created
post – mortem, much like Egyptian mummies.
However, the mummies found in Japan were actually
created in the excruciating and arduous process of
self – mummifications.
The actual process of self – mummification was
pioneered by a Buddhist monk of the Shingon sect
some 1,000 years ago. Since then, till it was
outlawed in 1909, hundreds of monks of the sect have
attempted the technique, and at least 16 of them
succeeded.
The ritual of self – mummification takes between 3 –
10 years and must have been so painful I read with
amazement, and almost admiration, at the
insurmountable effort it must have taken. In the first
2,000 days, the monk adopts a strict diet that consists
of little more than nuts and bark so as to drastically
reduce body fat (as this is what decomposes the
fastest upon death). Nearing the end of this period,
the monk stats drinking tea made from the juice of the
Urushi tree, which is highly toxic. Essentially slowly
poisoning themselves, ingesting the substance also
caused vomiting which further reduced fluids in the
body. Upon death, this poison served as a repellent
and protected the body from decomposition.
In the next 1,000 days, the priest would then be put
into wooden coffins and buried in the shelters with
only a bamboo tube for air. In the coffin, the priest
continued his ascetic practice, sitting in meditation,
reciting mantras, and maintaining a strict diet.
Entombed in the coffins, with only a bell to signal his
continued existence to the other monks, the monk

would await death. When the bell no longer rung, his
body would then be dug up to confirm his death and
reburied. 3 years later, his body would be dug out
again to confirm that the mummification process was
a success.
The ones who succeeded were conferred the title of
Sokunshinbutsu and were regarded as deities, while
the bodies of the rest Succumbed to decomposition,
leaving little evidence of their painful suicide.
