WILL ENGINES BECOME THE MOST CRITICAL PART OF<br />

THE 2014 PACKAGE?<br />

Red Bull technical chief Adrian Newey said last year that<br />

he believed the eng<strong>in</strong>e package <strong>in</strong> 2014 would become<br />

the primary differentiator between teams.<br />

Cowell th<strong>in</strong>ks that may be overstat<strong>in</strong>g the new<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>es’ importance, but he does th<strong>in</strong>k that work by<br />

manufacturers will return better rewards than <strong>in</strong> the<br />

era of the current eng<strong>in</strong>es.<br />

“We are putt<strong>in</strong>g the motor back <strong>in</strong> motor rac<strong>in</strong>g,” he<br />

said. “But to what extent that is the case we will only<br />

know <strong>in</strong> 2014. It will def<strong>in</strong>itely have more of an<br />

<strong>in</strong>fluence than now.”<br />

Cowell is sure, however, that the importance of energy<br />

recovery systems will be far greater.<br />

“Today it is difficult to be quick without KERS. For 2014<br />

it will be impossible to go rac<strong>in</strong>g without ERS.”<br />

WILL MANUFACTURER TEAMS HAVE AN ADVANTAGE?<br />

The fact that the eng<strong>in</strong>e is evolv<strong>in</strong>g to become a more<br />

<strong>in</strong>tegral part of the package means those teams that<br />

are currently aligned with the eng<strong>in</strong>e builders will get a<br />

head start over customer squads that are simply be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

supplied with the components.<br />

Cowell said: “Time is critical and the longer you have<br />

to look at th<strong>in</strong>gs, the better it is for th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g up ideas.”<br />
