chairman’s report
The 2007-2008 fi nancial year has been
one of many changes and challenges,
yet also new innovations.
In January 2008, we welcomed our
new Chief Executive, Adam Check, who
brings to the Foundation fresh insights
and experience to lead our business into
the future. This followed the retirement of
our long serving CEO Elizabeth Crundall,
who so ably led the Foundation for more
than 11 years. Despite recent economic
changes, our donors and supporters
have not wavered in their dedication
to the Hospital, and we thank them
whole heartedly for their commitment
to the children of NSW and beyond.
In the past fi nancial year, almost
$11 Million was transferred to the
Hospital, providing much needed
equipment, services and research,
helping thousands of seriously ill and
injured children. It will, however, come
as no surprise to reveal that the economic
woes of the local and world economies
have not left the Foundation unscathed.
Our net profi t for 07/08 was signifi cantly
less year on year, accentuated by a write
down on investments of $4.37 Million,
which is consistent with overall falls
in investment markets generally. On the
other hand we remain very optimistic
about the strength of our product and
our staff.
The Foundation’s major fundraising
campaign, Gold Week which incudes
the highly successful Gold Dinner, once
again enjoyed major exposure and
support across the state, with hundreds
of generous people attending the Dinner,
Gold Lunches or holding fundraisers
on their own.
We continue to work with the State
Government to ensure Sydney Children’s
Hospital receives a satisfactory share
of public funding, which is fair and
equitable to other similar institutions
in the state.
In June, the Foundation committed to a
new and exciting strategic plan which will
inspire the capital needs of the Hospital
moving forward over the next few years.
These developments – a new clinical
wing, a redevelopment of the Emergency
Department and an expanded space
for cancer research, will take the Hospital
into a new era.
Sincere thanks to all our dedicated staff
and board members, and in particular
the faithful service of long serving
farewelled board members Peter Allen
and Annabelle Bennett. We are also
pleased to welcome two new board
members to the Sydney Children’s
Hospital Foundation Board – Duncan
Makeig and Catherine Hogan.
After such an exciting year full of change
and revitalisation the Foundation is
enthusiastic and well placed to continue
our mission of helping the Sydney
Children’s Hospital provide the best
of care to this and future generations
of children.
I would like to take this opportunity to
thank you, our loyal supporters, for your
continuing and generous commitment
to Sydney Children’s Hospital.
Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation Annual Report 2007-2008

from the chief executive
Firstly, and most importantly,
thank you to everyone who
so generously supported our
Hospital over the past year.
Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation Annual Report 2007-2008
Your passion and enthusiasm – be it
though fundraising events, donations,
the support of fellowships or bequests –
made a substantial difference to the care
we provide for our young patients and
their families.
Thanks to your support, Sydney Children’s
Hospital Foundation delivered a solid
fi nancial result, highlighted by
a distribution to the Hospital of almost
$11 Million – an increase of 37.5%
on the previous year. This refl ects the
importance of your continued patronage
and Sydney Children’s Hospital’s reliance
on community support.
The future presents many opportunities
and some challenges for the Foundation.
Our new three-year strategy aims to not
only further engage our community at
large, but inspire the Hospital’s plans for
the future.
Since joining the Foundation, I have been
privileged to have met so many of our
wonderful supporters and, over time,
I sincerely hope to have the opportunity
to meet you all.
I would like to acknowledge the
substantial commitment of the Board
of Directors who, as fi nancial supporters
and advocates for the Hospital, give
so generously of their time. I am also
incredibly grateful to the Foundation team
– a fantastic group of people – who work
tirelessly, diligently and enthusiastically
to ensure that your support goes to our
heart and soul, our young patients and
their families.
Again, to our supporters at large, thank
you for being part of our team and for
doing everything you can to help care
for: Our children. Our future.
The Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation
is the principal fundraising body for the
Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick.
We engage the community and provide
philanthropic opportunities for our
partners to be directly involved with
the Hospital and make a difference
in the lives of seriously ill children.
We advocate for the Hospital and
work to gain exposure in political
and public arenas.
The Foundation supported the
construction of the current Sydney
Children’s Hospital building which
was opened in 1998. We focus our
efforts on the purchase of equipment,
the construction and refurbishment
of facilities and the funding of
clinically-based research endeavours.
This fi nancial year, the Foundation
contributed $11 Million to assist the
Hospital in its pursuit of excellence
for its patients and their families.
We pride ourselves on being one
of the leading and most transparent
charitable foundations in the country.
Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation Annual Report 2007-2008

The Sydney
Children’s Hospital
(SCH), Randwick is
one of Australia’s
leading specialist
medical centres
for children.
Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation Annual Report 2007-2008
We provide quality, comprehensive
and expert clinical services to the
children and families of New South
Wales and beyond.
The Hospital’s priority is children’s health
and wellbeing. To achieve the best results
possible, we work as a team, ensuring
personalised, high quality treatment
within an atmosphere of warmth, caring
and support for the children as well
as their parents and families.
Every year the Hospital admits some
15,000 children and provides over
290,000 occasions of care through
our emergency, outpatient and
outreach services.
Our networking credentials are second
to none. We engage with partners
both within healthcare and beyond
to ensure a comprehensive approach
to the health and wellbeing of the
paediatric population.
Beyond our dedication to service we
conduct multiple child health research
projects, continually pioneering initiatives
that improve outcomes for both this
and future generations of sick and
injured children.
We embrace a commitment to education
at all levels: professional, academic,
community as well as of the extended
families of our patients.
Our dedicated staff at SCH pride
themselves in providing highly effi cient
health care whilst maintaining our key
philosophy: “Children fi rst and foremost”.
11

12
from the executive director,
sydney children’s hospital, randwick
Dear Friends and Supporters,
The ageing of the Australian population
inevitably creates substantial competitive
pressures on our Health System. In this
context it is important to remember that
investing in the health and wellbeing
of children generates unparalleled
results not only in terms of health but
also in broader economic and societal
outcomes. Specifi cally, Children’s Health
Services, both in the community and in
hospitals, are critical contributors to the
health and wellbeing not only of the
children of today but of the productive,
tax-paying population of the future.
Indeed, “Our Children ARE Our Future”!
Sydney Children’s Hospital (SCH)
has demonstrated both national and
international leadership across a range
of domains critical to child health and
wellbeing. Our highly specialised and
technologically advanced services
for the most complex, severe and
chronic illnesses of childhood are well
recognised. Equally important, however,
is our track record in networking across
a range of Hospital and community
services and our comprehensive,
“total care” of children and their families.
We lead the way in engaging our
fellow professionals as well as other
agencies and the community generally,
with particular emphasis on rural and
regional support. For example in the
last year we documented 13,600 hours
of outreach service by staff of SCH
in face-to-face clinical scenarios.
In addition, there are far more hours
spent in videoconferencing, virtual
meetings, telephone liaison and
networking infrastructure. The leadership
of our Hospital manifests across a
large scope of service domains, further
complimented by our commitment
to education and research.
In order to deliver on our commitment
to provide the best of care for the
children and families of NSW, we value
enormously the partnership of our friends
and supporters across the community.
We thank you for your continued
dedication and sharing our vision
in serving: Our children. Our future.
Best wishes,
The Fellowship Program at Sydney
Children’s Hospital is vital to ensure
that medical staff continue to develop
their skills in an area of specialty,
whilst providing the highest possible
standard of care to our young patients.
As new treatments and cures continue to be developed, the need to offer professional
development to outstanding paediatric candidates has increased. The Fellowships train
the specialists of the future and attract candidates from far and wide.
Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation is dedicated to providing Fellowships through its
fundraising initiatives and creating partnerships with business and community. Thank you
to our sponsors who have contributed generously to funding the following Fellowships.
Research grants represent a major
investment in the future of our children
and is a vital part of Sydney Children’s
Hospital’s commitment to child health.
Research Grants are awarded annually to staff on a competitive basis after review
by the Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation’s Research Advisory Committee. This year
15 Research Grants were awarded for projects to be undertaken in a variety of medical
disciplines. The following three Research Grants give an insight into the broad range
of paediatric research conducted at Sydney Children’s Hospital.
The prognosis of Autism
Spectrum Disorders
Chief Investigator: A/Prof Katrina
Williams, Community Paediatrics, Sydney
Children’s Hospital
Associate Investigators: Vivian Bayl,
Robert Leitner, Con Papadopoulos, Susan
Woolfenden, Vanessa Sarkozy
Good quality information about the
prognosis of Autism Spectrum Disorders
(ASD) is necessary for families of
affected children to plan their lives,
and for clinicians who care for them to
make decisions about investigations and
management. There is limited recent
information about prognosis across the
different diagnostic subgroups of ASD
and no published studies involving an
Australian population. This study will
provide much-needed, locally relevant,
information about short term prognosis
and establish a mechanism for gathering
information about medium and long-term
outcomes.
Psychological impact of coming off
treatment for children diagnosed
with cancer: a milestone or millstone
for families
Chief Investigator: Ms Kate Lenthen,
Centre for Children’s Cancer and Blood
Disorders, Sydney Children’s Hospital
Associate Investigators: Dr Belinda
Goodenough, Dr Richard J Cohen
Up to 80% of children with cancer survive
into adulthood, yet little research has
documented the needs and concerns
of families as the child completes
treatment. The transition into the long
term survivor clinic represents a period
where the risk of cancer returning
becomes lower than the risk of long term
Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation Annual Report 2007-2008

effects of cancer therapy. This ‘coming
off treatment’ milestone can be a time
of signifi cant uncertainty, medically and
psychologically. This project aims to
document the experiences and unmet
information, support and service needs of
children completing cancer treatment with
a view to planning appropriate familyfocused
interventions.
S100 proteins and infl ammation
in the intestinal epithelium
Chief Investigator: A/Prof Andrew Day,
School of Women’s and Children’s
Health, Dept of Gastroenterology, Sydney
Children’s Hospital
Associate Investigator: Dr Steven Leach
S100 proteins are small molecules that
mediate infl ammation (or the response to
infection or injury) in various parts of the
body. This project aims to study how they
contribute to diseases of the intestine or
bowel that involve infl ammation, such as
infl ammatory bowel disease. It may be
that these S100 proteins play key roles
by interacting with the normal bacteria
present in bowel and amplifying or
abnormally augmenting the responses to
infl ammation of the intestinal lining. This
project has the potential to provide new
knowledge about the causes of these
childhood bowel conditions, with the
hope that new more effective therapies
might be developed in future.
Other Research Grants
Awarded:
Parental attitudes to nutrition and physical
activity after their child’s cancer treatment
and its relationship with risk of obesity
and the metabolic syndrome
