for four years, the building at one
Kneeland street is a home-away-fromhome
for Tufts dental students.
The recently renovated Dr. Edward
Becker Student Living Room, on the seventh
floor, provides students with cozier
and more functional space to inhabit during
breaks from classes and lunch. The
room, which features an expanded kitchen
area, more extensive cafeteria-like seating
and a separate area for relaxing, conversation
and watching TV, reopened at the
start of the fall semester.
It’s expected that the space also will
be used for receptions. A substantial portion
of the funding for the project came
from the Dr. Edward Becker, D34, Center
Endowment.

new dean for
academic affairs
Nadeem Karimbux,
the former assistant
dean for dental
education at Harvard
School of Dental
Medicine, joined
Tufts School of
Dental Medicine
Nadeem Karimbux
on October 1 as
associate dean for academic affairs. He
succeeds Nancy Arbree, who retired after
31 years at Tufts.
A periodontist, Karimbux’s academic
career has focused on dental curriculum
development and the scholarship of
teaching and learning. Before being named
assistant dean at Harvard in 1998, he was
director of predoctoral periodontology.
He directed Harvard’s advanced graduate
education program in periodontology since
2010, and was an associate professor of
oral medicine, infection and immunity.
At Tufts, Karimbux’s academic
appointment is in the department of
periodontology. His research interests
include the relationship between oral
health and systemic disease, periodontal
wound healing, the use of haptics, a
tactile feedback technology, for training
dental students and problem-based
learning in dental education.
A native of Nakuru, Kenya, Karimbux
received his undergraduate degree from
the University of Massachusetts at
Amherst and a D.M.D. from Harvard School
of Dental Medicine in 1991. He earned an
M.M.Sc. in oral biology and certificate in
periodontology, also from Harvard.
An accomplished researcher,
Karimbux has published more than 80
papers, written textbooks and lectured
worldwide. He is the editor of the Journal
of Dental Education (JDE), published
by the American Dental Education
Association (ADEA). He served for four
years on the ADEA Council of Faculties,
was a member of the JDE editorial review
board and served as an associate editor
of the Journal of Periodontology and
MedEdPORTAL.
