Project AWARE offers civic opportunity
for those with a taste for mud
By Mira Schmitt-Cash
Cleaning up a river is a
muddy job, but for those with a
taste for the fi ner things in life, a
Project AWARE fl yer encourages
you to think of it as a trip to the
spa.
The 10th annual Project
AWARE, which stands for A
Watershed Awareness River
Expedition, is July 7-14 along the
Iowa River.
Lynnette Seigley with the
Iowa Department of Natural
Resources told the Franklin
County Board of Supervisors
Monday about the volunteer
cleanup project on the northern
parts of the Iowa River, beginning
in the Dows and Popejoy area.
The signup deadline is June
22, in order to get meals ordered
and canoes reserved. A fee
covers catered meals.
Volunteers are sought to
sign up for any part of it: canoe
trash duty, sorting trash on
land, or simply coming out in
the evenings to participate in
educational programs.
Evening educational
programs run throughout the
July 7-14 event. Programs are
open to the public.
Sunday in Popejoy, Deb
Quade with the DNR, will speak
about the glacial forming of
the Iowa River, how it formed.
Jerry Rupert with Iowa State
University will give a program.
Sunday night as well, on
camping gear you’ll need.
Water quality monitoring is
also done daily.
Campers will break camp in
the morning. Gear is driven to
the next site.
During the day, participants
paddle an average of 10-15 miles
per day. They pull trash from the
river, sort and recycle as much as
possible.
In Franklin County, the group
will start by Dows and work
down river, camping two nights
at Popejoy before continuing to
Iowa Falls.
Route
It starts with a meet and
greet Saturday, July 7 at Popejoy
Conservation Park with the
Franklin County Conservation
Board. Sunday, the trip starts
from Vanderlip Access in Wright
County and ends with camp
at Popejoy Conservation Park
(Franklin County. Monday, July
9, the group travels from the park
to camp at Riverbend Middle
School in Iowa Falls (Hardin
County); July 10, to Eagle City
Park; July 11 to Pine Ridge Park,
Steamboat Rock; July 12 to Daisy
Long Memorial Park; July 13 to
Riverview Park Campground
(Marshalltown); July 14 to Three
Bridges County Park (Marshall
County).
Importance of registration
Registration will help
organizers order meals and
determine canoes needed.
Stats
Of some 72,000 miles of river
in Iowa, Project AWARE covers
about 100 miles a year.
Last year on the Turkey
River, 32 tons of trash, including
big tractor tires and old scrap
metal were removed. Because
of the type of trash, 96 percent
was recyclable. Ages 2-75
participated, 429 over the whole
week. On a given day, numbers
neared 200.
Folks from Iowa Falls lobbied
on the trip last year to bring the
project to this stretch of the Iowa
River, Seigley said. A southern
portion has been a focus of a
previous Project AWARE trip.
Over the past nine years,
the project has enlisted 2,100
volunteers, removed 182 tons of
trash and recycled 65 percent of
that. The percentage of recycled
trash decreased after a postfl
ood cleanup of the Cedar River
from Mason City to Cedar Falls
in 2008. Because of fl ooding, the
event was delayed from June to
August. Volunteers pulled out 47
tons of trash that year, but due to
fl ooding debris, the percentage
able to be recycled was down.
Trash art project
The trash, which usually
consists of metal and rubber
tires, is pulled from the rivers is
sorted by type of metal.
What is locally recyclable is
determined.
As in years past, Ogden artist
David Williamson will sculpt a
fi fth and fi nal set of gates from
among the Iowa River trash
found. At the Iowa State Fair
on weekends, Williamson will
have fairgoers melt some of the
gate material in a furnace. Rebar,
aluminum, fence posts, and
torch-cut tanks have composed
previous gates.
Incumbents emerge victorious in primary election
Incumbents emerged victorious
from the June 5 primary election,
as canvassed Monday morning.
Between Republicans running
for District 3 Supervisor, challenger
Eric Barkema, Alexander,
received 33 percent (164 votes);
incumbent Corey Eberling, Sheffi
eld, 67 percent (332). One provisional
ballot was added to
Eberling’s total. There were no
Republican write-ins and 3 non-
Republican candidate write-in
scatterings from Democrats.
Decimals are rounded to the
nearest whole.
In the Republican race for
Franklin County Sheriff, challenger
Ed Hanig, Sheffi eld, received
36 percent (423); incumbent Larry
Richtsmeier, Latimer, 64 percent
(747). There were four Republican
write-ins, and 18 non-Republican
write-in scatterings from Democrats.
For county auditor, Republican
incumbent Michelle Giddings,
Hampton, had 100 percent of the
vote, when rounded (1,076). Republican
voters offered two writeins;
Democrats, 27 write-ins.
In the Republican primary for
the new U.S. House District 4,
Steve King, Kiron, who is incumbent
only in the western part of
the district, had 98 percent of his
party’s votes (959); there were 2
percent (15) write-ins from Republicans.
In the Democrat primary for the
new U.S. House District 4, Christie
Vilsack, Ames, had 99 percent
of her party’s support (135); 1 percent
or 2 Democrat voters wrote
in a candidate.
In the new State House District
54, most of Franklin County’s previous
representative, Linda Upmeyer,
R-Clear Lake, won with
99 percent (1,069). Republican
House write-ins were 1 percent
(8); Democrats had 11 non-Republican
scattered write-ins.
Consequently, King and Vilsack
will face off for U.S. House District
4 at the polls in November.
Because of intricacies of the system,
in the new Iowa Senate District
27, which includes most of
Franklin County, Amanda Ragan,
D-Mason City, will not be on the
ballot until the next gubernatorial
election year, 2014.
With redistricting, Franklin
County is now counted as a
whole. Previously the portions of
Ackley and Dows in the county
had been split into the same districts
as their cities.
Though cross-party votes don’t
count in a primary, several Democrats
did write in candidates from
Republican races.
Election commissioner Michelle
Giddings explained, any candidate
with 35 percent of party
votes cast, and who is not on the
opposing party’s ticket, can get on
the ballot.
Laborshed study: Education and pay don’t always match up
According to the Franklin
County Laborshed Analysis,
released this spring, education and
pay don’t always match up.
The education industry has
the largest percentage of postbaccalaureate
degree-holding
staff, followed by fi nance,
insurance and real estate and
public administration and
government, while construction,
manufacturing or farming pays
the most and typically requires
lower educational attainment.
A laborshed is the region from
which an employment center
draws its commuting workers.
To determine the approximate
Franklin County Laborshed area,
employers supplied the zip code
listings of where each of their
employees resides.
The entire laborshed area
contains some 47,000 people.
Of these, 77.3 percent are
employed and 7.4 percent are
retired. This leaves 6.4 percent
unemployed and 8.9 percent
voluntarily not employed and not
retired. Employment status was
self-identifi ed. The unemployment
percentage does not refl ect the rate
published by the U.S. Bureau of
Labor Statistics, which applies a
stricter defi nition.
Of the employed, 16.2 percent
are working multiple jobs. Average
hours are 37 per week. Average
age is 50 years old.
The top fi ve industries of the
employed are healthcare and social
services, 19 percent; wholesale
and retail trade, 16 percent;
manufacturing, 13 percent;
education, 12 percent; agriculture,
9 percent.
The fi ve professions refl ecting
the largest percentage of staff
with an undergraduate degree
or higher, and median salary, are
education, 69 percent ($44,000);
fi nance, insurance and real estate,
56 percent ($12.28 per hour);
professional services, 44 percent
($35,000); public administration
and government, 41 percent
($45,000) and healthcare and social
services, 29 percent ($50,000).
The six highest-salaried
positions and percent of staff with
an undergrad degree or higher are
construction, $61,000, 25 percent;
manufacturing, $58,500, 16 percent;
agriculture, $57,500, 12 percent (20
percent in ag have an associate
degree); healthcare and social
services, public administration and
government and education, a close
sixth. (Salaries and educational
attainment for last three appear in
the previous paragraph.)
According to Franklin County
Development executive director
Karen Mitchell, this indicates that
earning potential in rural areas
is not directly related to higher
education. “Yet if one were to
delve deeper, it’s the jobs requiring
specialty education, which are
making the most money within
manufacturing,” Mitchell said.
“Manufacturing has become
highly sophisticated and those
trades skills are learned in the
classrooms of our community
colleges.
“By the same token,” Mitchell
said, “it’s a shame that the very
people we task to educate our
future higher-wage earners are
themselves not compensated as
equitably as they could be on the
open market.”
Some 28 percent work in
professional, paraprofessional and
technical occupations followed by
some 27 percent in production,
construction and material
handling occupations.
Some 7,250 employees are
estimated likely to change or
accept employment. Of these,
some 5,150 are employed, 525
are unemployed, some 400 are
voluntarily not employed but not
retired and some 1,200 are retired.
Some 9.4 percent, or 500 people,
are estimated underemployed
because they are at or below
35 hours per week, at or
below national poverty level,
overqualifi ed for their positions
or have taken a pay cut compared
to previous employment. Skills
mismatch (some 300 people)
and inadequate hours (some
200) were the top reasons for
underemployment, with some 100
qualifying as low income.
Based around Hampton, the
Franklin County laborshed draws
most densely from Hampton, with
45-732 commuters concentrated
there, and secondarily from
Sheffi eld, Latimer, Coulter,
Bradford, Iowa Falls, Geneva,
Dumont and Allison, with 17-44
commuters residing in these areas.
Zones with one to 16 commuters
residing there are bounded
by Ventura, Clear Lake and
Mason City at the north, Greene,
Clarksville and Parkersburg at the
east, Steamboat Rock, Eldora and
Alden at the south, and Clarion
and Belmond at the west.
Art Zewert presiding. Interment will
be in the church cemetery. Visitation
will be 5:00 - 7:00 p.m., Tuesday at
Retz Funeral Home, Sheffi eld.
Carolyn Francis (Koenigsberg)
Meints, daughter of Roy Hugo
Daniel and Anna Johanna (Melberg)
Koenigsberg was born March 28,
1920 and passed away May 12,
2012. Her girlhood years were spent
growing up on the family farm
southwest of Sheffi eld helping her
parents with the farm chores.
Carolyn was a member of the
German Baptist Church in Sheffi eld
and later transferred to Zion
Reformed Church. She attended
school through the eighth grade at Chapin Consolidated School; her father
decided it was not necessary for her to go to high school. Carolyn spent her
time working for some aunts helping them care for their homes and canning
garden produce. In Carolyn’s teen years her sister married and she lived with
them for the next four years helping out where needed. After the birth of her
niece Marilyn, Carolyn helped take care of her. Marilyn continued to have a
special place in her heart her entire life.
While living with her sister, Carolyn met a young farmer named Conrad
Edward Meints. They were married October 23, 1940 at her parent’s farm.
Carolyn and Conrad built a life on the family farm and raised their three
children. They moved to Sheffi eld to retire in 1972. After Con’s death she
lived in the Sunrise Apartments, Deerfi eld Place Assisted Living and recently
moved into the Sheffi eld Care Center.
Carolyn loved gardening and fl owers, she had the ability to make anything
grow and bloom, especially her African Violets. Her life was about her
family; always putting them before herself yet not afraid to discipline. Her
faith was an important part of her life, instilling it in her children’s lives.
Carolyn is survived by her children: Ronald (Shirley) Meints, Larry (Donna)
Meints, and Lois (David) Craighton, all of Sheffi eld; 14 grandchildren and
step grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren and step great grandchildren and
3 step great great grandchildren; two nieces and one nephew; 2 sisters-inlaw:
Mary Meints and Darlene Meints and a host of nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband Conrad, her parents, sister Clara
and her husband John Barkela; brother Ervin, granddaughter Amy Craighton
and Con’s 3 brothers: John, Harold and Marvin Meints.
General Severe was on R & R,
well that’s what he called it, and
we know better it was play time in
Minnesota with the boys. Well I was
next in command; not according to
the troops but then what do they
know? I added a few new wrinkles
into the game which challenged
their skill level. By golly folks they
all passed not one fl unked out, well
maybe a couple but it is beyond my
integrity to every divulge who it was.
We had fi fteen soldiers of fortune all
warmed up and ready for combat.
They were required to check their
ammo to make sure they had enough
rounds to go around! The top combat
award went to Dallas Slagle, Barney
Dougherty and Dave Levitt. Oh I
know you fi nd it hard to believe but
hey they are as honest as old Abe
was. They fi red a 101 because we
used the eclectic format, way too
hard to explain so I shan’t! High light
of that group was David Levitt right
in there, he swung so hard on a shot
he did a 360, fell down and by golly
ker-plunk in she went 185 yards. If
you believe that Dave said he’s come
and wash your windshield for free.
Prizes went to 1 st , 2 nd and 4 th . That
amazing 101 won them a 94” TV
but come to fi nd out they don’t make
them that big. Sorry boys, maybe in
2020.
Second place went to my platoon
who had Duane Dorenkamp and
Edward Siems and we fi red a 104.
Duane introduced us to his wind
up swing, and let me tell you folks
his wind up is something to behold.
He brings the club up over his head,
spins around two times steps forward
and swings so hard he comes out

of shoes. Now don’t laugh I never
exaggerate. He did hit one drive
using that formula that went 400
yards, oh I forgot that was his 3 rd shot,
I just can’t remember details very
good. We won ourselves a free shoe
shine in the airport in Des Moines.
The third place platoon consisted of
Randy Peter, Jim Dorenkamp and
Roger Madsen and they fi red a 105
which gave them nuttin. You’d think
with two children and a grandpa they
could shoot a little better than that.
The fourth place platoon was led
by fi ve stars General Cliff Cameron,
whoops hey someone fi bbed as there
is not a fi ve star general. Oh well,
whatever rank he was, probably a
buck private, led Bob Shreck and
Billiam Nolte to a 110. Uffda, as they
say way up nort in Minneeesewtah,
dat dare’s a lotta shaaats, ya betcha!
Billiam is getting so thin he tried
to convince us that he has to jump
around in the shower to get wet.
WOW! They won a free fi shing trip
to Aglahara – if they can fi nd it. The
fi nal platoon was running out of
ammo but managed to fi re that last
round of bullets, whoops golf balls,
as they emptied their clips. They
shot 112 which aren’t bad for a skinfl
int, a license plater and a fi sher of
fi shermen. It was none other than
Bob Siems, Jim Saylor and DeanO
Peter. Thus friends ends yet another
chapter in the never ending book of
“How to Play Golf When Aged!”
So, sew what…sew buttons on
your over coat says the guru of
literature and I be like the giraffe who
was neck and neck with his brother.
Heimer accused me of being a crosseyed
teacher because I couldn’t
control my pupils. I heard Heimer,
Severe, Schnoes, and Nelson took
a tour of the Coca-Cola plant in
Winona and was given a pop quiz at
the end. Okay so long and thanks for
inviting me (well maybe you didn’t)
into your house. Bazinga—Billy L.
Nothing really exciting to write
about on the work front. Things
went smoothly the whole week
. . . a welcome change! I spent
some time on the newer press . .
that cured the problem. Right
off to one of my favorite places
time for the young one to take
Nobody’s giving up on cutting
property taxes
Cutting property taxes is long
overdue here in Iowa, and it would
be a great way to create local jobs.
Senate Democrats have taken
the advice of Iowans, community
leaders and business leaders from
across the state in putting together a
plan for cutting commercial property
taxes.
The Legislature does its best work
when we avoid divisive issues and
work together on the top priorities
of Iowans. Iowans want property tax
relief. That’s why I’m frustrated and
disappointed that the House, Senate
and Governor let the opportunity to
pass permanent property tax reform
slip through our fi ngers this year.
In 2011, the Iowa Senate voted
46-4 for $200 million annually in
commercial property tax relief. Four
out of fi ve commercial property tax
payers would have received a 40
percent tax cut under the Senate’s
bipartisan plan—a plan that would
not shift any additional tax burden
to homeowners. Unfortunately, our
proposal was not taken up in the
Iowa House.
During the 2012 session, we
developed a bigger, bolder plan that
would have cut commercial property
taxes by more than $350 million.
In the end, Senate File 2344 was
caught up in election-year politics.
It didn’t garner one Republican vote,
despite including suggestions from
Governor Branstad and Republican
lawmakers.
This was a missed opportunity.
It would have dramatically cut
property taxes for almost every
business and also would have cut
taxes for working families.
I will continue to push for a
commercial property tax cut for
every Iowa business—one that
helps our small businesses the most,
without hurting local schools and
services. I know we can get the job
done.
FSA seeks
new county committee candidate
By Mira Schmitt-Cash
The nomination period for this
year’s county committee election
will be June 15 through Aug. 1, with
elections taking place this fall.
This year’s election is important,
according to Franklin County Farm
Service Agency executive director
Steve Abbas.
That’s because Franklin County
Committee member AJ Schaefer has
served his maximum of three, threeyear
terms. The county FSA will be
looking for someone new to represent
the townships of Richland, Ross,
Scott, West Fork and Wisner, known
as Local Administrative Area 1, or
LAA 1.
The Franklin committee consists
of three members whom eligible local
producers elect to three-year terms,
which are staggered by year.
Typically, Franklin County’s
eligible producers have elected men to
the committee.
“(Candidates) can also be women
who are involved in farming, either
as owners or operators. A number of
counties in Iowa have had women
elected to the committee system,”
Abbas said.
U.S. Department of Agriculture
said in a news release the organization
is committed to increasing the
participation of all farmers on the FSA
county committees, with an emphasis
on women and minority farmers.
Beginning farmers are also highly
encouraged to become involved.
score Taylor. Bill Taylor singled to
score Foell then stole second. With
Larson laid down a nice one to the
pitcher who fi elded and threw to fi rst
for the out, the ball going wild for an
error, two runs scoring and Larson
safe at second. Levitt doubled to score
Larson and the side was retired with an
assist.
Miss Nancy Ann Schumacker of
Sheffi eld was a member of the State
College of Iowa graduating class. She
received a Bachelor of Arts degree
with a Teaching Certifi cate, having a
major in English. Miss Schumacker, a
niece of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Wearda,
has been contracted to teach in the
school at Cedar Falls this next year.
George Kammrad, accompanied by
Lee Roberts of Sanborn, Dale Lahner,
Stephen, David, and Susan Lahner,
of Sheffi eld, drove to Minneapolis,
Minn., to attend the Minnesota Twins
vs. Chicago White Sox double header
major league ball games. They also
visited Mr. and Mrs. Les Lahner and
family in Minneapolis.
June 15, 1972
Eight Town of Sheffi eld, Clinton
township, residents have been
selected to serve on the petit juror
panel in Franklin County district
court for the months of July, August,
and September. The 77-member list
was selected on Thursday, June 1,
in the offi ce of Harry W. Jorgensen,
clerk of district court. The jurors will
serve when called during this period
according to a copy of the venire.
The Sheffi eld people named are:
Mrs. Gilbert Blood, Mary Jensen,
Alma Koester, Mrs. Willis Meyer,
Mrs. George Storck, Mrs. Clifford
Thomas, Emma Timmerman, Mrs.
Elmer Weber. Others selected from
this area are: Richland – Mrs. Marvin
Deam, Calvin Jurgens, Mrs. Howard
Markwardt, Mrs. Leon Pralle. Ross –
Leslie Beemer, Mrs. Dwain Schinagel.
West Fork, Dwayne Mason, Mrs.
Larry Peter. Wisner – Foster Barkema,
To be eligible to serve on an FSA
county committee, a person must:
•Be of legal voting age and eligible
to vote in a county committee election
•Live in LAA 1
•Participate or cooperate in a
program administered by FSA
“It’s best if they are actively
involved in farming either as owners
or operators,” Abbas said, in order to
have someone knowledgeable about
what’s going on in agriculture, to
facilitate decision-making.
If a third man is elected, an adviser
is appointed. Currently, that’s Linda
Krukow from Hampton. If a woman
were elected, Krukow wouldn’t need
to advise, according to Abbas. An
advisor does not vote, but Abbas said
all input is carefully considered.
“The committee election process is
designed to give all producers a better
chance of having their opinions and
ideas expressed in the community,
throughout FSA and the nation.
Therefore, it is vital that we have a
diverse committee, not only in the
physical make up of the committee, but
making sure we have representatives
from all forms of agriculture,” said
John Whitaker, state FSA executive
director.
Decisions can be producer appeals,
based on eligibility for farm program
decisions; loan approval, for items such
as grain bins or dryers; commodity
price support; conservation programs;
employing county executive directors;
incentive, indemnity, and disaster
Mrs. Hugh Porterfi eld.
West Fork Boys Straighten Out
Warhawks Win Two Conference Games
By Jon Hapgood
Things are fi nally starting to
correct themselves, as the West Fork
Boys Baseball team has won two
Corn Bowl Conference games in a
row, after getting off to a sluggish
start at the beginning of the season.
On Friday, June 8, West Fork
defeated Nashua-Plainfi eld 7-3 in a
conference game at Sheffi eld.
West Fork scored four runs in
the bottom of the fi rst inning. The
Warhawks added two runs in the
third, and a single run in the fourth
inning for the win.
Jordan Hubka pitched the win for
West Fork, allowing seven hits, three
runs, two of which were earned, and
he struck out two batters.
As a team, West Fork collected
11 hits for the game. Markus Wogen
continued his fi ne play for the
Warhawks by going 3 for 4 at the
plate with a double.
Jordan Hubka cracked two
homeruns and drove in two runs, as
he went 2 for 3 at the plate.
Spencer Halloran was 2 for 4
with two triples, and he drove in two
runs.
Cody Engebretson, Austin Neff,
Jeff Hafermann, and Ryan Smit had
the other West Fork hits.
On Wednesday, June 6, West
Fork defeated Riceville 7-0 in a
conference game at Sheffi eld.
West Fork scored a single run in
the bottom of the fi rst inning. The
Warhawks added four runs in the
fi fth inning, and two runs in the sixth
inning for the win.
Spencer Halloran hurled a twohit
shutout of the Wildcats, and he
struck out 11 batters in his personal
best performance of the season.
West Fork collected seven hits,
and the team stole six bases to create
their scoring opportunities.
Markus Wogen led West Fork at
the plate by going 3 for 4 again with
a double, and he drove in three runs.
Jordan Hubka was 2 for 4 with a
double and a homerun, and he drove
in a run. Jordan scored three runs.
Spencer Halloran had a double,
and Sam Amsbaugh had the other hit
for the Warhawks.
In other action last week, Clear
Lake romped all over West Fork by
the score of 18-0 in a non-conference
game at Sheffi eld on Tuesday, June
5.
Clear Lake is highly ranked in
Class 3A, and the Lions played the
game in that manner, as they gave
West Fork no chance in the game at
all.
West Fork was held to a single
hit, a triple by Jordan Hubka, as the
Warhawk bats were silent for the
game.
Jeff Hafermann started on the
mound pitching for West Fork, and
he took the loss. Cody Engebretson,
Ryan Smit, and Tanner Tuttle pitched
in relief for the Warhawks, and none
of the pitchers were effective against
the powerful Lions.
On Monday, June 4, St. Ansgar
defeated West Fork 5-3 in a
conference game at St. Ansgar.
St. Ansgar scored two runs in the
bottom of the third inning, and two
additional runs in the second inning.
The Saints added a single tally in the
sixth inning.
West Fork scored a single run in
the third inning, and the Warhawks
added two runs in the fi fth inning,
which wasn’t enough in this game.
Jordan Hubka pitched for West
Fork and took the loss. He allowed
eight hits, fi ve runs, and he struck
out six batters.
As a team, West Fork managed
just four hits for the game. Scoring
chances were at a minimum for the
Warhawks.
Jordan Hubka led West Fork with
a double, and he drove in a run.
Spencer Halloran, Zane Ruger, and
Markus Wogen had the other West
Fork hits.
On Friday, June 1, Central
Springs defeated West Fork 4-3 in a
conference game at Sheffi eld.
Central Springs scored a single
run in the top of the fi rst inning. The
Panthers added a single run in the
fourth, and two additional runs in the
fi fth inning for the win.
West Fork had two runs in the
fourth, and a single run in the fi fth
inning.
Spencer Halloran started on the
mound pitching for West Fork and he
took the loss. He went fi ve innings,
allowing fi ve hits, four runs, three of
those earned, and he struck out fi ve
batters.
Markus Wogen pitched two
innings of relief ball for the
Warhawks.
As a team, West Fork collected
seven hits, and the team received
three bases on balls.
Markus Wogen led West Fork in
batting by going 2 for 3 at the plate,
and he drove in a run.
Austin Neff followed by going 2
for 4. Cody Engebretson, Spencer
Halloran, and Zane Ruger had the
other West Fork hits.
West Fork is now 3-7 overall for
the season, and 3-2 in Corn Bowl
Conference action.
Coach Jordan Nelson
Resigns At West Fork
Warhawks Mentor Leaving For Carlisle
By Jon Hapgood
West Fork Head Boys
Basketball Coach Jordan Nelson
has resigned at the school to
pursue other interests.
Coach Nelson will be the
Dean of Students and head boys’
basketball coach at Carlisle, a
suburb of Des Moines.
Coach Nelson said, “It was a
very tough decision to leave West
Fork, but professionally, it is the
right move for me and my family
in a lot of ways.”
Nelson has had fabulous
success with the West Fork
Boys Basketball program in the
past four years. He guided the
Warhawks to the Class 2A State
Championship in 2011. West Fork
has also dominated the Corn Bowl
Conference under his guidance.
He has coached eight years at
the school, with SCMT being the
school for four years, before the
naming of West Fork.
West Fork has won 56 straight
conference games, and the
Warhawks are predicted on paper
to win the conference title again in
2012-13.
West Fork was ranked in the
top fi ve teams in Class 2A for the
season just passed, before losing to
Roland-Story 51-49 in a substate
fi nal game at Mason City. West
Fork fi nished with a record of 22-
2.
It will be a challenge for Coach
Nelson at Carlisle, as they fi nished
7-15 last season in Class 3A.
Meanwhile, the cupboard is not
bare at West Fork. The Warhawks
have eight returning Varsity
letterman coming back. The JV
team had a winning record, the
JJV (freshman) team had a good
winning record, and the eighth
grade team had a good winning
record.
West Fork Boys Fifth At
in Livermore on May 29 and
May 30.
Central Springs (Manly)
placed fourth with a score of
fi fth with a team score of 333.
Mitch Maiers of Columbus
fi red a low round of 75 for meet
medalist. Chase Shedenhelm
of Denver shot a 76 for meet
Kyle Parcher shot an 87,
for the other non-counting
scores for West Fork.
West Fork had an excellent
season, as the Warhawks
of 40 wins and 5 losses.
The Warhawks lose Joe
IF A COMPANY YOU OWN IS IN THE HEADLINES
ASK YOURSELF IF IT SHOULD BE
IN YOUR PORTFOLIO.
Snap reactions to headlines aren’t usually good ways to plan
for your future. But when a stock you own is in
the news, you may need some advice. Should you buy additional
shares, sell or simply maintain the status quo?
Edward Jones can help. We spend time getting to know
you and your financial goals so we can help you create
and implement a strategy designed to achieve them.
To learn our perspective on whether a particular stock
makes sense for you, call or visit your local financial
advisor to schedule a complimentary portfolio review.
