1. Intention<br />
This document was prepared to unify the treatment of MAN Vehicles during initial build and<br />
maintenance phases. The choice of products and methods takes into consideration the potentially<br />
severe and harsh environments in which these vehicles operate.<br />
The chapters describing the treatment techniques are built on our total experience and are<br />
of generic nature. The treatment details are described in respective Spraying Diagrams.<br />
1.1 Range of use<br />
EFTEC Aftermarket system is designed for underbody and cavity rust prevention, for vehicles such<br />
as cars, trucks and buses, during their production (OEM), at import plants and in the maintenance<br />
aftermarket.<br />
A clean and economical treatment is assured by easy application from the synergies between<br />
products and application equipment.<br />

2. Products<br />
2.1 In general<br />
It is EFTEC's aim to reduce the VOC (volatile organic content) in corrosion Prevention Compounds<br />
to improve environmental and work place conditions.<br />
This in combination with effective application of high solids and solvent free compounds provides:<br />

3. Working premises<br />
Following is general advice for the use of corrosion prevention materials.<br />
3.1 Treatment Area<br />
In the treatment area there are many things to be considered.<br />
Please, see chapter 4, Working Protection for further information regarding laws, regulations and<br />
recommendations.<br />
Below are some points to consider, when planning the treatment station.<br />
• The walls should be made of a material that is easy to clean, for example stainless steel or<br />
treated with strippable booth coating.<br />
• The floor should be of a non slip material.<br />
• An oil separator should be installed on the incoming air line.<br />
• Use high pressure water wash for cleaning.<br />
• The lift used should be a 4 corner wheel lift, as it provides good vision when working from<br />
below.<br />
• If possible, storage of the products should be in a separate part of the building. This area<br />
should have an ambient temperature, +15°C minimum.<br />
• For workplace safety, hose reels should be used.<br />
• For best treatment, result and safety, always keep the pumps and other equipment clean.<br />
• The working temperature in the station should not be below +15°C and not over +30°C.<br />
• Spraying diagrams should be easily available.<br />

• It is very important to try to keep the working area clean.<br />
• When cleaning the floor and the walls we recommend you to use a cleaner, with<br />
degreasing properties.<br />
• Have the Material Safety Data Sheets, for all products you use, easily available.<br />
• Always hand these to the medical staff, if an accident should occur.<br />
• Use protective clothing, such as overall, gloves and face mask (i.e. a mask with an<br />
activated carbon filter), make sure that they are used.<br />

3.2 Example of spraying area in a rust proofing station<br />
There shall be at least 1 meter between the vehicle, the lift and the walls even if the doors of the<br />
vehicle are open.<br />
There should also be 1.5 – 2 .0 meters free space at the front and the rear of the vehicle.<br />

4. Workplace safety issues<br />
In all areas of anti-corrosion treatments, order and cleanliness are important preconditions for<br />
safety and comfort at work. It is necessary to look into a number of other subjects related to health<br />
and safety.<br />
Some health & safety precautions are dependent on local legislation and can vary from country to<br />
country, or even between different communities of the same country. EFTEC Aftermarket<br />
recommends contacting your local authorities regarding these important issues.<br />
The following are to be considered as recommendations only<br />
4.1 Application systems<br />
4.1.1 Safety Information<br />
Warning! The system is handling High Pressure! Risk for personal injury!<br />
• This equipment is designed on a technical level that includes several security conditions. It<br />
is important that these conditions are respected in order to prevent accidents and personal<br />
injury. All components used together with the pump must be capable of withstanding the<br />
pump flow and pressure.<br />
• Qualified maintenance personnel must perform all work on this equipment.<br />
• Everyone working with this equipment, i.e., operators and maintenance personnel, should<br />
study this manual to familiarise themselves with the equipment, operation and safety<br />
features.<br />
• Release pressure and other connections from the product system before performing any<br />
maintenance work.<br />
• Inspect the equipment for wear at regular intervals, paying particular attention to hoses,<br />
guns and tips. Ensure that all equipment is kept clean.<br />
• To prevent any personal injury or equipment damage, it is important that the recommended<br />
system pressures are not exceeded.<br />
• Avoid extreme bending, driving over by vehicle, or other mechanical impact on the product<br />
hoses.<br />

• Always use: ear protectors, goggles and gloves when working near compressed airpowered<br />
machines.<br />
4.2 Ventilation<br />
Warning! Do not exceed a maximum compound pressure of 30 MPa<br />
(300 bar).<br />
Safety valve installed in the line air inlet on the pump will maximise line air<br />
pressure to the pump, not exceeding 0,5 MPa (5 bar).<br />
• The ventilation equipment must be arranged in such a way, that contaminated air does not<br />
reach the respiratory organs.<br />
• Never apply corrosion prevention material without turning on the ventilation. The ventilation<br />
shall also be turned on whenever the vehicle engine is running.<br />
• If possible the pump equipment should be shielded from the working area.<br />
• The air circulation under the vehicle shall always be high enough to prevent mist occurring.<br />
The speed of the air circulation 20 cm under the lifted vehicle shall be approx. 0.3 m/sec.<br />
• Re circulation of the ventilated air is not allowed other than for drying.<br />
• The ventilation system shall be equipped with an indicator that shows when the air<br />
circulation is not sufficient. The ventilation system should not elevate the normal noise in<br />
the workplace. The noise from the ventilation system shall be at least 10 dB (A) lower than<br />
the workplace noise. The noise can be reduced by i.e. insulation of the air channels and<br />
ventilation. The fan system should be placed outside of the workplace.<br />
• Operational instructions for the ventilation system shall be available for the workers.<br />
• Regular services shall be carried out on the ventilation system.<br />

4.3 Light<br />
• As the corrosion prevention material is dark and there are many parts that can shadow your<br />
view of the underbody, lights of approx. 500 Lux should be used.<br />
• The lights should be placed so they will not get covered with corrosion prevention material.<br />
• A hand light should be available for inspection of i.e. wheel arches and cavities.<br />
4.4 Piping<br />
4.5 Lifts<br />
NOTE! The connections should be designed for pressure of 300 bar minimum!<br />
• EFTEC recommends a 4 corner wheel lift, in order to get the best visibility when working.<br />
4.6 Cleaning and degreasing<br />
• When using a cold degreaser such as white spirit, applied by brush, protective gloves<br />
should be used. If the degreaser is sprayed, use appropriate face mask and eye-protection.<br />
• A suitable solvent should be used for cleaning or degreasing.<br />

4.7 Fire protection<br />
• In the building where spraying takes place, open flames, welding and smoking is prohibited.<br />
• Fire extinguishers must be easy available and located in a safe place.<br />
• Some anti corrosion products are combustible / flammable, and storage should be<br />
performed according to local laws and regulations.<br />
• Containers with anti corrosion material shall never be heated by open fire.<br />
4.8 Spraying<br />
• When spraying, high pressure guns should be used.<br />
• The hose for the high pressure unit shall be a steel armoured hydraulic hose. It must be<br />
resistant to a pressure at least four times more than the highest existing pressure used.<br />
• If the hose gets damaged, it must be replaced, never repaired! Never change the<br />
connectors.<br />
• The hose between the unit and the spray gun must be earthed to avoid static electricity.<br />
• The hose between the spray gun and the nozzle (extension hose for internal treatment),<br />
should be protected with a plastic hose which also covers the hydraulic connectors.<br />
• The nozzle of the spray gun should be guarded, to prevent personal injury.<br />
NOTE! If hit by the high pressurized product, it will go deep into the skin<br />
tissue. This can cause serious injuries which can lead to amputation of the<br />
injured body part. If this should happen, take this person to hospital<br />
immediately.<br />

Before changing or cleaning nozzles, switch off the high pressure air and make sure there is no<br />
remaining pressure in the pump. Follow this procedure also when leaving the working area, even if<br />
only for a short while. When cleaning the nozzles use appropriate cleaning needles.<br />
When spraying, the pressure should be adjusted to avoid unnecessary mist. Do not spray towards<br />
the ventilation exhaust.<br />
The spray ability for anti corrosion material varies with composition and temperature.<br />
Under age workers are not allowed to use high pressure equipment.<br />
4.9 Protective gear<br />
Workers must be provided with gloves made of suitable material, e.g. oil resistant plastics and<br />
facemask to be used when and if needed. For exposed skin, a suitable oil-resistant lotion shall be<br />
provided.<br />
This lotion should be used before the start of work. No thinner or other harmful solvents should be<br />
used for cleaning skin. Do not use compressed air for personal cleaning.<br />

4.10 In case of accident<br />
• Seek medical attention.<br />
• The hospital can contact the Toxic Information Bureau, available in each country.<br />
• If you get material in your eyes - rinse carefully with clean water for 15 minutes and seek<br />
medical attention.<br />
• Always bring the Material Safety Data Sheet of the product in question when<br />
consulting a hospital.<br />
• Please, have in mind that cured anti-corrosion products can be flammable. If it is necessary<br />
to use open flame when cutting or to weld doors, door sills, members or similar, take every<br />
precaution against ignition or spread of fire. A carbon dioxide fire extinguisher should<br />
always be available.<br />
4.11 First aid kit<br />
• Every first aid kit shall contain bandages for large and small wounds.<br />
• There should be at least one first aid kit at every station.<br />

5. Before starting the treatment<br />
The operator should first study the specific spraying diagram and technical information available.<br />
The spraying diagram provides clear instructions where to drill, what should be dismantled, where<br />
to apply the different products and which nozzles to use.<br />
The catalytic converter and its indicators should be covered. Do not spray on the catalytic<br />
converter heating shield.<br />
Do not spray onto drive shaft or brake components.<br />
5.1 Products<br />
One penetrating, water displacing cavity compound and one abrasion resistant, heavy duty,<br />
underbody compound are used to get a combined anti corrosion and wear protection.<br />

5.2 Drying<br />
It is important that the vehicle is dry and clean before the anti corrosion treatment begins. Drying of<br />
the vehicle can be done in a number of ways. What is the same for all methods is that the<br />
underbody and wheel arches must be completely dry.<br />
Stationary or mobile dryers, which blow heated air on the underbody and the wheel arches, can be<br />
used. The vehicle can also be left inside a building over night.<br />
Warning! Never use an open flame to dry the vehicle!<br />

6. Surface Cleaning<br />
6.1 Loose corrosion<br />
Before the corrosion proofing treatment, inspect the vehicle. All loose flakes and dirt should be<br />
removed.<br />
Especially sensitive spots are:<br />
� wing mountings<br />
� wing flanges<br />
� wing pockets<br />
� around fuel tank<br />
� suspension details<br />
6.2 Corrosion damaged areas<br />
Inspect the vehicle for possible corrosion damage. Check the following details:<br />
fenders, door pillars, boot, door sills and bonnet.<br />
6.3 Cleaning<br />
� Protect the brakes and the brake drums<br />
� Apply the degreaser<br />
� Wait for 5-10 minutes<br />
� Wash with high pressure water<br />

7. General treatment instructions<br />
• Engine, gear box, radiator, sound deadener and the differential must not be sprayed, as<br />
they get heated up during driving and the products have insulating properties.<br />
• The drive shaft must not be treated for the risk of unbalance.<br />
• The brake drums shall be protected.<br />
• The spray application must be conducted systematically, to assure complete coverage.<br />

8.2.1 Procedure<br />
8.2.1.1 Preparation:<br />
• Clean the underbody using the high pressure wash<br />
• Remove loose and flaking pieces of the current coating by spatula and steel brush<br />

8.3 Product compatibility<br />
In general, vehicles treated with a solvent based system should be retreated with products of the<br />
same chemical base. Vehicles treated with a water based system should only be retreated with<br />
similar products.<br />
Buses initially treated with TECTYL 5750W can be retreated with EFCOAT AB 429 IQ.<br />
Buses initially treated with EFCOAT AB 429 IQ cannot be retreated with TECTYL 5750W.<br />
Validation of initial coating technology should be addressed to MAN Aftermarket<br />
organisation, quoting vehicle chassis number.<br />

commercial vehicles, in both OEM and aftermarket<br />
applications. Typical application areas are underbody, wheel<br />
arch and rocker panel. EFCOAT ® AB 429 IQ can be over<br />

General description: EFCOAT ® WH 441 IQ is a thixotropic corrosion<br />
preventive fluid with excellent film building properties. The<br />
product has good penetration characteristics for joints, gaps,<br />
existing corrosion and dirt layers. EFCOAT ® WH 441 IQ dries<br />
to a waxy, water repellent protective film giving an excellent<br />
rust protection.<br />

EFCOAT ® WH 441 IQ is designed for application in closed<br />
cavities, doors and spare parts. EFCOAT ® WH 441 IQ can<br />
be used in a 2 layer process with EFCOAT ® WB 463 IQ.<br />
Application: EFCOAT ® WH 441 IQ is applied by brush, dip and high or<br />
low pressure spray.<br />
For a 2 layer process, wet film of approximately 40 µm<br />
should be applied, after drying 30 – 60 minutes EFCOAT ®<br />
WB 463 IQ can be applied as a closed film coating with film<br />
build of 500 - 800 µm (wet)<br />

General description: EFCOAT ® WH 458 IQ is a thixotropic rust preventive fluid<br />
with excellent film building properties on open surfaces as<br />
well as in cavities. When dry, the product leaves a grey,<br />
waxy, water repellent, protective film, giving an excellent rust<br />
protection.<br />

General description: EFCOAT ® WB 463 IQ is a highly thixotropic corrosion preventative<br />
providing long term resistance against corrosion and abrasion.<br />
When dry, a tough, elastic, brown, waxy protective film remains,<br />
with good heat resistance, giving a high degree of protection.<br />

EFCOAT ® WB 463 IQ is an underbody product for treatment<br />
of vehicles during production, at import plants and in the after<br />
market. When applied to a clean, dry surface, it adheres to<br />
both painted surfaces and those coated with a layer of PVC<br />
or similar material. Zinc, rubber and plastics are completely<br />
unharmed by the product. A clean and economic treatment is<br />
assured by easy application and high solid content.<br />
