1. Intention 

This document was prepared to unify the treatment of MAN Vehicles during initial build and 

maintenance phases. The choice of products and methods takes into consideration the potentially 

severe and harsh environments in which these vehicles operate. 

The chapters describing the treatment techniques are built on our total experience and are 

of generic nature. The treatment details are described in respective Spraying Diagrams. 

1.1 Range of use 

EFTEC Aftermarket system is designed for underbody and cavity rust prevention, for vehicles such 

as cars, trucks and buses, during their production (OEM), at import plants and in the maintenance 

aftermarket. 

A clean and economical treatment is assured by easy application from the synergies between 

products and application equipment.

2. Products 

2.1 In general 

It is EFTEC's aim to reduce the VOC (volatile organic content) in corrosion Prevention Compounds 

to improve environmental and work place conditions. 

This in combination with effective application of high solids and solvent free compounds provides: 

• Improved working conditions 

• Reduced environmental pollution 

• Less fogging during application 

• Less dripping during and after application 

• Reduced product waste 

• Reduced solvent emissions 

• Cost effective treatment

3. Working premises 

Following is general advice for the use of corrosion prevention materials. 

3.1 Treatment Area 

In the treatment area there are many things to be considered. 

Please, see chapter 4, Working Protection for further information regarding laws, regulations and 

recommendations. 

Below are some points to consider, when planning the treatment station. 

• The walls should be made of a material that is easy to clean, for example stainless steel or 

treated with strippable booth coating. 

• The floor should be of a non slip material. 

• An oil separator should be installed on the incoming air line. 

• Use high pressure water wash for cleaning. 

• The lift used should be a 4 corner wheel lift, as it provides good vision when working from 

below. 

• If possible, storage of the products should be in a separate part of the building. This area 

should have an ambient temperature, +15°C minimum. 

• For workplace safety, hose reels should be used. 

• For best treatment, result and safety, always keep the pumps and other equipment clean. 

• The working temperature in the station should not be below +15°C and not over +30°C. 

• Spraying diagrams should be easily available.

• It is very important to try to keep the working area clean. 

• When cleaning the floor and the walls we recommend you to use a cleaner, with 

degreasing properties. 

• Have the Material Safety Data Sheets, for all products you use, easily available. 

• Always hand these to the medical staff, if an accident should occur. 

• Use protective clothing, such as overall, gloves and face mask (i.e. a mask with an 

activated carbon filter), make sure that they are used.

3.2 Example of spraying area in a rust proofing station 

There shall be at least 1 meter between the vehicle, the lift and the walls even if the doors of the 

vehicle are open. 

There should also be 1.5 – 2 .0 meters free space at the front and the rear of the vehicle.

4. Workplace safety issues 

In all areas of anti-corrosion treatments, order and cleanliness are important preconditions for 

safety and comfort at work. It is necessary to look into a number of other subjects related to health 

and safety. 

Some health & safety precautions are dependent on local legislation and can vary from country to 

country, or even between different communities of the same country. EFTEC Aftermarket 

recommends contacting your local authorities regarding these important issues. 

The following are to be considered as recommendations only 

4.1 Application systems 

4.1.1 Safety Information 

Warning! The system is handling High Pressure! Risk for personal injury! 

• This equipment is designed on a technical level that includes several security conditions. It 

is important that these conditions are respected in order to prevent accidents and personal 

injury. All components used together with the pump must be capable of withstanding the 

pump flow and pressure. 

• Qualified maintenance personnel must perform all work on this equipment. 

• Everyone working with this equipment, i.e., operators and maintenance personnel, should 

study this manual to familiarise themselves with the equipment, operation and safety 

features. 

• Release pressure and other connections from the product system before performing any 

maintenance work. 

• Inspect the equipment for wear at regular intervals, paying particular attention to hoses, 

guns and tips. Ensure that all equipment is kept clean. 

• To prevent any personal injury or equipment damage, it is important that the recommended 

system pressures are not exceeded. 

• Avoid extreme bending, driving over by vehicle, or other mechanical impact on the product 

hoses.

• Always use: ear protectors, goggles and gloves when working near compressed airpowered 

machines. 

4.2 Ventilation 

Warning! Do not exceed a maximum compound pressure of 30 MPa 

(300 bar). 

Safety valve installed in the line air inlet on the pump will maximise line air 

pressure to the pump, not exceeding 0,5 MPa (5 bar). 

• The ventilation equipment must be arranged in such a way, that contaminated air does not 

reach the respiratory organs. 

• Never apply corrosion prevention material without turning on the ventilation. The ventilation 

shall also be turned on whenever the vehicle engine is running. 

• If possible the pump equipment should be shielded from the working area. 

• The air circulation under the vehicle shall always be high enough to prevent mist occurring. 

The speed of the air circulation 20 cm under the lifted vehicle shall be approx. 0.3 m/sec. 

• Re circulation of the ventilated air is not allowed other than for drying. 

• The ventilation system shall be equipped with an indicator that shows when the air 

circulation is not sufficient. The ventilation system should not elevate the normal noise in 

the workplace. The noise from the ventilation system shall be at least 10 dB (A) lower than 

the workplace noise. The noise can be reduced by i.e. insulation of the air channels and 

ventilation. The fan system should be placed outside of the workplace. 

• Operational instructions for the ventilation system shall be available for the workers. 

• Regular services shall be carried out on the ventilation system.

4.3 Light 

• As the corrosion prevention material is dark and there are many parts that can shadow your 

view of the underbody, lights of approx. 500 Lux should be used. 

• The lights should be placed so they will not get covered with corrosion prevention material. 

• A hand light should be available for inspection of i.e. wheel arches and cavities. 

4.4 Piping 

4.5 Lifts 

NOTE! The connections should be designed for pressure of 300 bar minimum! 

• EFTEC recommends a 4 corner wheel lift, in order to get the best visibility when working. 

4.6 Cleaning and degreasing 

• When using a cold degreaser such as white spirit, applied by brush, protective gloves 

should be used. If the degreaser is sprayed, use appropriate face mask and eye-protection. 

• A suitable solvent should be used for cleaning or degreasing.

4.7 Fire protection 

• In the building where spraying takes place, open flames, welding and smoking is prohibited. 

• Fire extinguishers must be easy available and located in a safe place. 

• Some anti corrosion products are combustible / flammable, and storage should be 

performed according to local laws and regulations. 

• Containers with anti corrosion material shall never be heated by open fire. 

4.8 Spraying 

• When spraying, high pressure guns should be used. 

• The hose for the high pressure unit shall be a steel armoured hydraulic hose. It must be 

resistant to a pressure at least four times more than the highest existing pressure used. 

• If the hose gets damaged, it must be replaced, never repaired! Never change the 

connectors. 

• The hose between the unit and the spray gun must be earthed to avoid static electricity. 

• The hose between the spray gun and the nozzle (extension hose for internal treatment), 

should be protected with a plastic hose which also covers the hydraulic connectors. 

• The nozzle of the spray gun should be guarded, to prevent personal injury. 

NOTE! If hit by the high pressurized product, it will go deep into the skin 

tissue. This can cause serious injuries which can lead to amputation of the 

injured body part. If this should happen, take this person to hospital 

immediately.

Before changing or cleaning nozzles, switch off the high pressure air and make sure there is no 

remaining pressure in the pump. Follow this procedure also when leaving the working area, even if 

only for a short while. When cleaning the nozzles use appropriate cleaning needles. 

When spraying, the pressure should be adjusted to avoid unnecessary mist. Do not spray towards 

the ventilation exhaust. 

The spray ability for anti corrosion material varies with composition and temperature. 

Under age workers are not allowed to use high pressure equipment. 

4.9 Protective gear 

Workers must be provided with gloves made of suitable material, e.g. oil resistant plastics and 

facemask to be used when and if needed. For exposed skin, a suitable oil-resistant lotion shall be 

provided. 

This lotion should be used before the start of work. No thinner or other harmful solvents should be 

used for cleaning skin. Do not use compressed air for personal cleaning.

4.10 In case of accident 

• Seek medical attention. 

• The hospital can contact the Toxic Information Bureau, available in each country. 

• If you get material in your eyes - rinse carefully with clean water for 15 minutes and seek 

medical attention. 

• Always bring the Material Safety Data Sheet of the product in question when 

consulting a hospital. 

• Please, have in mind that cured anti-corrosion products can be flammable. If it is necessary 

to use open flame when cutting or to weld doors, door sills, members or similar, take every 

precaution against ignition or spread of fire. A carbon dioxide fire extinguisher should 

always be available. 

4.11 First aid kit 

• Every first aid kit shall contain bandages for large and small wounds. 

• There should be at least one first aid kit at every station.

5. Before starting the treatment 

The operator should first study the specific spraying diagram and technical information available. 

The spraying diagram provides clear instructions where to drill, what should be dismantled, where 

to apply the different products and which nozzles to use. 

The catalytic converter and its indicators should be covered. Do not spray on the catalytic 

converter heating shield. 

Do not spray onto drive shaft or brake components. 

5.1 Products 

One penetrating, water displacing cavity compound and one abrasion resistant, heavy duty, 

underbody compound are used to get a combined anti corrosion and wear protection.

5.2 Drying 

It is important that the vehicle is dry and clean before the anti corrosion treatment begins. Drying of 

the vehicle can be done in a number of ways. What is the same for all methods is that the 

underbody and wheel arches must be completely dry. 

Stationary or mobile dryers, which blow heated air on the underbody and the wheel arches, can be 

used. The vehicle can also be left inside a building over night. 

Warning! Never use an open flame to dry the vehicle!

6. Surface Cleaning 

6.1 Loose corrosion 

Before the corrosion proofing treatment, inspect the vehicle. All loose flakes and dirt should be 

removed. 

Especially sensitive spots are: 

� wing mountings 

� wing flanges 

� wing pockets 

� around fuel tank 

� suspension details 

6.2 Corrosion damaged areas 

Inspect the vehicle for possible corrosion damage. Check the following details: 

fenders, door pillars, boot, door sills and bonnet. 

6.3 Cleaning 

� Protect the brakes and the brake drums 

� Apply the degreaser 

� Wait for 5-10 minutes 

� Wash with high pressure water

7. General treatment instructions 

• Engine, gear box, radiator, sound deadener and the differential must not be sprayed, as 

they get heated up during driving and the products have insulating properties. 

• The drive shaft must not be treated for the risk of unbalance. 

• The brake drums shall be protected. 

• The spray application must be conducted systematically, to assure complete coverage.

8.2 Treatment guidelines for solvent and water based products. 

8.2.1 Procedure 

8.2.1.1 Preparation: 

• Clean the underbody using the high pressure wash 

• Remove loose and flaking pieces of the current coating by spatula and steel brush 

• Dry the underbody 

• Mask the lower part of the bus – on the edge of the underbody using masking tape and 

paper. (“as a skirt“) 

• Mask bolts, nuts, engine and other sensitive parts using masking tape 

8.2.1.2 Treatment of Cavities: 

• Following instructions on spray diagram, treat with EFCOAT WH 458 IQ (with 2 way nozzle 

or flexi wand) 

• Leave to stand for 20 minutes 

• Remove excess residue, from treatment holes with clean cloth

8.2.1.3 Teatment of the underbody, if existing application is solvent based UBC 

• Pre-treat the entire underbody with EFCOAT WH 441 IQ (Observe that special attention 

should be paid to overlapped structure. Tool Wand 65° 

• Allow to stand for 30 minutes 

• Apply the final coat of EFCOAT WB 463 IQ to 500µ wet film build on general underbody 

and 800µ wet film build in wheel arches. Tools: Wand 65° and Hook 20° 

8.2.1.4 Treatment of the underbody, if existing application is water based UBC 

• Treat the entire underbody with EFCOAT AB 429 IQ, to 500µ wet film build on general 

underbody and 800µ wet film build in wheel arches. Tools: Wand 65° and Hook 20° 

• At outside temperatures < 0°C treated vehicles sho uld be stored under cover at 

temperatures > 15°C for min. 2 Hours. 

8.2.1.5 Treatment of engine bay and components 

Clean engine bay and components thoroughly 

Ensure areas to be treated are dry 

Application of EFCOAT WE 439 IQ

8.3 Product compatibility 

In general, vehicles treated with a solvent based system should be retreated with products of the 

same chemical base. Vehicles treated with a water based system should only be retreated with 

similar products. 

Buses initially treated with TECTYL 5750W can be retreated with EFCOAT AB 429 IQ. 

Buses initially treated with EFCOAT AB 429 IQ cannot be retreated with TECTYL 5750W. 

Validation of initial coating technology should be addressed to MAN Aftermarket 

organisation, quoting vehicle chassis number.

0.2 to 60 mills. Gauge indicates the film thickness between two values. 

Example: If the tooth “50” touches the film and the tooth “70” does not, the film is 

more then 50, but less them 70. 

Instructions: Use a flat, not curved surfaces for measurement. 

Wet film 

Press the gauge through the film to the metal and observe teeth touching the film 

For easy observation press the gauge on a white paper and observe mark left on the paper. 

Dry film 

Pull the gauge across the surface and observe the lines left by the measuring teeth. 

The correct film thickness of a compound is stated in the Technical Data Sheets!

General description: EFCOAT ® AB 429 IQ is a water based, fast drying, 

underbody protection product. After drying, it leaves a black 

elastic film which has excellent abrasion properties. 

Application: EFCOAT ® AB 429 IQ is for applied to cars, buses and 

commercial vehicles, in both OEM and aftermarket 

applications. Typical application areas are underbody, wheel 

arch and rocker panel. EFCOAT ® AB 429 IQ can be over 

painted after drying with various paint systems.

EFCOAT ® AB 429 IQ can be applied by airless high pressure 

or conventional low pressure spray or brush. 

Application between 15° C and 30° C

General description: EFCOAT ® WE 439 IQ has the following properties: 












- Dries to a hard, shiny, transparent film 

- Resistant to both alkali and acids 

- Heat resistant up to a temperature of more than 200° C 

- Good adhesion and flexibility on rubber and plastic 

parts at both low and high temperatures 

- Short drying time with spray application 

EFCOAT ® WE 439 IQ is specially developed to be used on 

surfaces which are exposed to both high and low 

temperatures. 

Parts to be treated with EFCOAT ® WE 439 IQ are engine 

compartments, and components. 

Should not be applied on exhausts, manifolds or drive belts 

Application: EFCOAT ® WE 439 IQ should be applied as follows: 

- On clean surface 

- With high or low pressure equipment 

- At temperature of 15-30° C 

- Hardness and adhesion are improved with temperature

EFCOAT ® WH 441 IQ 

Product: EFCOAT ® WH 441 IQ 

General description: EFCOAT ® WH 441 IQ is a thixotropic corrosion 

preventive fluid with excellent film building properties. The 

product has good penetration characteristics for joints, gaps, 

existing corrosion and dirt layers. EFCOAT ® WH 441 IQ dries 

to a waxy, water repellent protective film giving an excellent 

rust protection. 












EFCOAT ® WH 441 IQ is designed for application in closed 

cavities, doors and spare parts. EFCOAT ® WH 441 IQ can 

be used in a 2 layer process with EFCOAT ® WB 463 IQ. 

Application: EFCOAT ® WH 441 IQ is applied by brush, dip and high or 

low pressure spray. 

For a 2 layer process, wet film of approximately 40 µm 

should be applied, after drying 30 – 60 minutes EFCOAT ® 

WB 463 IQ can be applied as a closed film coating with film 

build of 500 - 800 µm (wet)

General description: EFCOAT ® WH 458 IQ is a thixotropic rust preventive fluid 

with excellent film building properties on open surfaces as 

well as in cavities. When dry, the product leaves a grey, 

waxy, water repellent, protective film, giving an excellent rust 

protection. 












EFCOAT ® WH 458 IQ is designed for application in closed 

cavities, doors and other parts of cars, trucks and buses. 

Application: EFCOAT ® WH 458 IQ is applied, by manual or semiautomatic 

application equipment with airmix or airless spray, 

at temperature between 15° C and 30° C.

EFCOAT ® WB 463 IQ 

Product: EFCOAT ® WB 463 IQ 

General description: EFCOAT ® WB 463 IQ is a highly thixotropic corrosion preventative 

providing long term resistance against corrosion and abrasion. 

When dry, a tough, elastic, brown, waxy protective film remains, 

with good heat resistance, giving a high degree of protection. 












EFCOAT ® WB 463 IQ is an underbody product for treatment 

of vehicles during production, at import plants and in the after 

market. When applied to a clean, dry surface, it adheres to 

both painted surfaces and those coated with a layer of PVC 

or similar material. Zinc, rubber and plastics are completely 

unharmed by the product. A clean and economic treatment is 

assured by easy application and high solid content. 

Application: EFCOAT ® WB 463 IQ can be applied by manual or automatic 

airless application equipment.
