Mission San Juan Capistrano 2007-2008 in Review 

Who says history is boring? At Mission San Juan Capistrano history was alive and celebrated all year long with great pride and dedication. 

This past year was one of great activity for a 232 year old historic site that is home to a museum, the historic Serra Chapel, gorgeous and ever changing gardens, gift 

shop, educational programs, two audio guides in six languages, tens of thousands of student fi eld trips, new exhibits, special lectures, special public events, community 

festivals, private events, and daily masses. People from all over the world, with all kinds of interests, income levels, faith traditions and desires to be inspired, fi nd respite, 

entertainment, education, art, beauty, and culture did so in one spectacular setting all year long. 

For the team of committed Foundation members, volunteers, staff members, conservation professionals, and community supporters, it was a year where everyone worked 

together enthusiastically to develop new education programs, renew vibrance, and ensure that Mission San Juan Capistrano continued to serve as a place of inspiration, 

education and preservation. 

All of these values were embodied in educational programming that was offered to over 54,000 students who came to Mission San Juan Capistrano to experience a tour 

and/or any of the educational programs offered such as Mission Matters, Discovery Science Center’s “Science on a Mission,” or Journeys to the Past Native American 

Storytelling. Students also took advantage of the new audio guide as part of their visit. Many of the students were “adopted” and able to come to the Mission through the 

generous support of the Adopt-A-Class scholarship program. 

Using donated gifts and funds, and available operating revenues, investment to preserve the site was a top priority every day. Throughout the year, progress in completing 

the Serra Chapel Conservation Project continued. Important tasks such as carrying out much needed repairs to its arcade roof, installing a fi re safety system, installing new 

museum quality lighting and chandeliers, and completing the conservation of the interior fi nishes and Stations of the Cross paintings (collection) were among the tasks 

needed to bring the project into its fi nal phase.

Gifts and donations funded much needed lighting, masonry, and roofi ng repairs to the South Wing. Available funds from operations 

were also dedicated to making the site safer with the Central Courtyard Walkway Improvement Project. Nearly 200 tons of decomposed 

granite was placed on top of unstable cobblestones making the pathways safer and easier to navigate for young and elderly visitors alike. 

To ensure that the Mission served as a place where family learning opportunities were possible, the education and event staff innovated 

new programming such as the summer’s “Night at the Mission – a Family Camping Experience” along with a summertime 

weekday historic crafts and storytelling series. Children and parents enjoyed the campfi res, and opportunities to make historic crafts 

and toys, and learn about history in an engaging environment. 

In 2007-2008 volunteers helped the Mission thrive. They provided Native American basket weaving and demonstrations and loom 

weaving. Free garden tours were also provided by the Gardening Angels, while Docents gave over 26,000 students guided tours. 

Volunteers manned the Curiosity Carts featuring “touch the past” replica artifacts. Women’s Guild members helped sell The Bells Are 

Ringing, A Call to Table, the Mission’s award winning cookbook, to raise funds for preservation. The Gala Committee planned and 

executed the most successful fundraiser ever, and Living History continued to celebrate history on the second Saturday of each month. 

To ensure the Mission continued its commitment to the community it hosted many local celebrations including the annual 

Swallows Day Festival, Mariachi Festival, Preservation Week, San Juan Capistrano Chamber of Commerce’s Economic Summit 

and Annual Vintage Event, the Capistrano Valley Boys and Girls Club annual fundraiser, Taller San Jose’s annual fundraiser, and 

served as home for the Capistrano Valley Symphony Sunday concert series to name a few. The new Celebrating Communities 

Program also offered residents of designated Orange County cities on specifi c dates a two for one admission rate.

New ways to enjoy Mission information were offered 

in an improved website which now allows the public 

to purchase tickets to concerts and events online. 

An interactive events calendar was also introduced 

to help visitors fi nd the latest information about 

Mission-sponsored events. Finally, a partnership with 

Ticketmaster to sell tickets online was initiated. 

As the Foundation, staff and volunteers, take time to 

celebrate the accomplishments of 2007-2008 through 

the release of this Annual Report, we collectively thank 

you for supporting Orange County’s only mission, 

Mission San Juan Capistrano. We know that you have 

a choice as to where to invest your resources of time 

and fi nancial support.

The Mission Organization 2007-2008: A Shared Sense of Purpose 

The Mission organization is comprised of hard working and dedicated staff. 

In total, 46 people are employed by the Mission. Specialists in the fi eld of 

conservation, architectural preservation, graphics, information technology, and 

public relations are retained as needed. Contract staff helps to extend services 

as needed and provide the ability to grow or shrink as the demand for staffi ng is 

there. In total, $1,516,232 in annual salary costs is needed to keep the Mission 

open, accessible, vibrant, and safe 363 days a year. 

Working at the Mission is a privilege and honor. Employees recognize the unique 

stewardship responsibility they have in executing their daily responsibilities. A careful 

balance between creating new programs while reducing impacts is 

constantly sought after by the senior team in laying out priorities and objectives 

from year to year. 

Employees at Mission San Juan Capistrano share a sense of purpose and willingness 

to do what it takes to keep the Mission looking beautiful, preserved, and relevant 

for future generations to come. In terms of success, the Mission organization uses 

a metric that extends beyond just the important fi nancial facts and fi gures. Success 

daily is measured in the positive comments received and the heartfelt thanks from 

those who consider the Mission a “home.” 

The Mission team is grouped by various divisions responsible for different 

aspects of work as follows: 

Administration 

The Administrative staff includes such positions as Human Resources, 

Visitor Center - Front Gate operations, Accounting Services, the Special 

Projects Manager, and the administrative support staff that runs the offi ce 

environment, managing supplies, organizing fi les, and providing support 

to the Mission Preservation Foundation. Administration also includes 

contract staff such as the Mission Publicist and Mission Graphics Designer. 

Preservation Team 

This Team works with the Executive Director to ensure that the historic 

Mission remains a jewel for future generations. The team is augmented 

with specialized contract professionals in the area of historic site 

construction and conservation to ensure projects meet the Secretary of 

the Interior Standards for the Care and Treatment of Historic Buildings. 

The team is also responsible for museum planning, on site conservation, 

consultant management, policy and housekeeping development, and more.

The Organization, continued 

On Site Events Department 

The On Site Events Department is responsible for 

managing all events, whether public or private, 

that are held at the Mission. This equates to nearly 

100 events annually. During 2007-2008 the Team 

hosted Return of the Swallows Festival, Music Under 

the Stars, Battle of the Mariachis, Founders Day, 

Christmas at the Mission, and more. All events 

were carried out successfully, raising needed funds, 

making friends, and creating awareness of Mission 

San Juan Capistrano in 2007-2008. 

Visitor Center – Front Gate 

The Visitors Center is critically important to making 

sure each and every guest is welcomed to Orange 

County’s only mission. In doing so, they see over 

330,000 visitors each year. In 2007 the new “Voices 

of the Mission” audio tour required them to expand 

their responsibilities to include giving out and 

managing the implementation of the audio guide. 

Along with these duties, the team processes all 

student and adult tour groups and ensures the safe 

arrival of more than 54,000 excited fourth graders. 

They coordinate the dispersal of the Passport 

Explorer to incoming fi eld trip students, process 

photo shoots, manage art sales, and direct fi eld trip 

attendees to their classes and lunch destinations. In 

addition to providing guest relations, the staff raises 

funds for the preservation of the Mission through 

their sales of the Preservation Society memberships. 

Visitor Center – Booking Staff 

The Booking staff book fi eld trips with teachers to 

ensure that fourth grade fi eld trips to the Mission 

provide the maximum positive lerning experience 

possible. In addition the staff coordinates with 

local area hotels to ensure concierges are aware 

of upcoming events and Mission programs. The 

staff works with the Adopt-A-Class Program 

administering limited and available funds to 

qualifying students needing scholarships to enjoy a 

free fi eld trip to the Mission. The team also hosts 

the annual free Teachers Wine and Cheese Open 

House and assists wherever needed in supporting 

the coordination of Docent and audio guided tours 

for events. Lastly, the booking staff coordinates 

with the Education Staff to ensure that programs 

such as Mission Matters, Discovery Science Center’s 

Science on a Mission, and Journeys to the Past Native 

American Storytelling are available to teachers and 

students wanting a hands on learning experience as 

part of their fi eld trip. 

Visitor Center- Administration 

Behind the scenes the Visitor Center Administrative 

Staff provide support in the area of receptionist duties, 

guest relations, membership processing, booking of 

tours, managing how groups fl ow, and how volunteers 

are integrated into the operations of tours, and 

membership appreciation/recognition. Volunteer

management is a key component of this effort to ensure 

all of the Mission’s over 300 volunteers are kept safe and 

informed of changes or plans for the site. 

Facilities/Environmental - Custodial Services 

The Facilities Department includes the Environmental 

Services Staff, or custodial crew, that is responsible for 

keeping the Mission sparkling. In addition, this team also 

maintains the Basilica, Mission Parish School, and the 

Pastoral Center with funding for that work supported by 

reimbursements from those entities. 

Facilities/Maintenance Services 

Part of the Facilities Department is the energetic 

Maintenance Team who dispatch calls for service, obtain 

bids for work, and manage consultants and contractors 

in achieving campus maintenance and major repairs or 

improvements. 

Facilities/Security 

Security Staff watch over the Mission after hours and during 

events to ensure activities are carried out with care and protection 

for the historic resource and its guests. 

Education Staff 

The education and interpretive learning opportunities at 

the Mission are carried out by Interpretive Manager who 

develops curriculum and course work in the Mission Matters 

Program. The Education and Events Staff hosted the highly 

successful, fi rst-ever, “Night at the Mission - a Family Camping 

Experience,” along with introducing weekday historic crafts 

and storytelling sessions. In total, during fi scal year 2007-2008, 

the Educational Program Manager taught over 17,000 students 

in a Mission Education Program. Free education lesson guides 

for teachers were also introduced on the Mission’s website along 

with new materials provided for fourth graders to help them in 

making their reports and models. The Mission is committed to 

providing curriculum that is based on California standards in 

history and social science.

Mission Volunteers 

The Mission Preservation Foundation celebrates the Mission’s 

volunteers at the Volunteer and Staff Appreciation Luncheon 

held each year at the El Adobe Restaurant in San Juan 

Capistrano. Members of the following volunteer groups are 

commended for their generous gift of time to support Orange 

County’s only mission. 

Artifacts Council 

With the goal of education and preservation, members assist 

the Mission’s Preservation Team in exhibit development and 

hosting lectures at the Mission. Many of the Artifacts Council 

members also coordinate the Mission’s annual September 

black tie gala fundraiser which benefi ts specifi c Mission 

projects such as the Conservation of the Serra Chapel Project, 

South Wing Project, and museum development. 

Docent Society 

The Docents have provided student tours for over 20 years. 

Docents essentially serve as education ambassadors to 

thousands of fourth graders and adult tourists each year. 

Docents also support special events and corporate events. 

This year the Mission introduced the “Kids Choice 

Award” honoring those special Docents delivering 

tours in a successful way connecting children to history 

through a fun-fi lled inspired experience. 

Gardening Angels 

The Mission’s Gardening Angels devote countless hours 

to enhance and nurture the beautiful gardens alongside 

O’Connell Landscape Maintenance. In partnership with 

the On Site Events Department, the members also helped 

host the Flower, Garden and Fine Art Show in June,2008. 

The Angels are committed to preservation and support 

conservation work through donations and funds raised 

from their efforts. 

Living History 

Living History members host Second Saturdays at the 

Mission where they wear period attire, tell stories, and 

demonstrate crafts and cooking methods. Members also 

provide a festive presence at events throughout the year 

and attend community events representing the Mission. 

Women’s Guild 

The Guild supports a variety of activities and events including 

the Music Under the Stars concert series, Mission festivals, 

the Guild’s Annual Fashion Show and administrative and 

offi ce support on an as needed basis. Members also help to 

sell The Bells are Ringing: A Call to Table, the volunteerinspired, 

award winning Mission cookbook which raises 

funds for preservation. 

Youth Leadership 

The Mission Youth Leadership volunteer program offers 

teens the chance to earn community service hours and help 

Mission staff at special events and audio guide distribution 

during peak events. 

Special Projects 

Many volunteers help in key ways to make the Mission a better, 

stronger, thriving historic site. From assisting the museum 

department, to performing light offi ce duties, to helping with the 

old Cemetery on Ortega Highway, to packaging Passport Explorers, 

these volunteers help in new and extraordinary ways making 

a direct difference to the sustainability of this historic site.

Mission Education 2007-2008 

The Mission matters! That’s what fourth graders learned during their fi eld trip to 

Mission San Juan Capistrano this past year. Committed to providing a quality 

educational experience, the Mission served as a place of inspired learning about early 

California history, the indigenous people of early California, and even science. 

Educational programming directly provided 27,000 students with a docent guided 

tour. Nearly 1,000 students experienced the new “Voices of the Past” audio tour. 

Another 27,000 students came without a tour. In total, during the 2007-2008 school 

year, over 54,000 students visited the Mission. Of that total, 16,000 also participated 

in a Mission education program or special class. 

This past year’s programming continued to feature Mission Matters coursework 

providing experiences in adobe brick making, hide branding, rope making, and 

ceramics. The educational offerings also featured the collaborative learning 

opportunities through partnerships with Journeys to the Past Native American 

storytelling, the Discovery Science Center’s “Making the Grade” science education, 

Dana Point’s Ocean Institute, and ZOOMARS Petting Zoo. 

Educational programming aligns with the State course work and curriculum standards 

for Social Science and Science for fourth grade students.

Mission San Juan Capistrano also continued to refi ne its educational operations by introducing 

the following initiatives during the past year: 

- Seeking feedback from teachers and visitors by way of surveys and comment cards. 

- Improving website applications to support teachers and tour operations by introducing 

a Teachers Page and Students Corner. Free teacher planners, lesson guides, and student 

“stories” and learning section are now available. 

- Adding a teacher lesson plan to support learning through the use of the Passport 

Explorer. 

- Offering Curiosity Carts featuring “Touch the Past” replica artifacts from early 

California for hands on learning. 

- Providing loom weaving and Native American basket weaving demonstrations. 

- Hosting Second Saturdays, Living History interpretive events featuring members of 

the Mission’s Living History Society. 

- Introducing Free Mission Matters Programs and admission discounts for teachers 

booking and taking their fi eld trips in the Fall. 

Adopt -A-Class Program 

Mission-sponsored education programs were enjoyed by the 

underserved of Southern California through the generous support 

of donors to the “Adopt-A-Class Program.” This donor supported 

fi eld trip program received $8,814 to provide 1,058 low income 

students with free admissions, Docent guided tours, Passport 

Explorers, transportation, and participation in an education class 

during the 2007-2008 school year.

Mission Preservation 2007-2008 

Preservation is a top priority for Mission San Juan Capistrano. The Mission must be 

carefully and artfully maintained so that it does not become “new,” but at the same 

time, adapts to the needs of visitors. It also must be evaluated from the standpoint 

of undoing past inappropriate treatments. As the art and science of historic 

preservation has developed, efforts must more carefully refl ect respect for the past 

and in all ways be reversible, and be based on careful thinking about what is best 

for the future of this historic site. Future generations of preservationists must have 

access to well maintained records (with regard to treatments carried out) so that 

they know how to carry on certain projects in the future. 

Preservation is defined as the pro-active care and stewardship of this site 

and its structures. This means delivering available resources as quickly 

as possible to both the daily maintenance and cleaning of the site while 

also carrying out a long term strategic plan for the stabilization of the 

most historically significant buildings, artifacts, and outdoor features. 

Preservation also means sharing information with the public to generate a 

learning opportunity about how to steward a site, and prescribe treatments 

that allow for future generations to enjoy the site with as much appreciation 

possible. Finally, part of the preservation effort requires managing events so that 

they do not generate damage. 

While Mission San Juan Capistrano spans over 230 years, many buildings have 

been altered or added throughout this time frame. Therefore, the decisions 

that must be made with regard to how to treat a specific building or item, are 

ones that must be carefully weighed. Whether it is a basket or a basket weave 

chimney, the care and treatment to protect and display the item must be one that 

is carefully considered. Preservation also involves sharing information about 

the site, or interpretion, so that those who visit leave with a deeper appreciation 

for various significant points in California history. 

Preservation work is funded entirely by private donations, membership, or 

grants. Income from the gate admissions do not fund the stewardship of the 

site, but rather keeps the Mission open for the public. This makes all of the 

accomplishments from the past year even more meaningful, when it is realized 

that gifts and donations directly translate into a measurable, immediate 

difference on the Mission grounds. Continued on next page

Preservation is an effort that every staff member 

gets involved in, whether they are making sure that 

programs are carried out in a way that protects the 

Mission or whether they are performing a specifi c 

task. Each department, in its own way, gets involved, 

carries out, and supports the sustainability of this 

beautiful historic resource. 

What follows is a highlight of just some of the 

projects carried out during the fi scal year 2007- 

2008. Together, these much needed projects help to 

generate a visual setting that is tranquil, beautiful 

and in keeping with what people expect and hope 

to see and experience at a California mission. 

The Mission team strives for its efforts to exceed 

expectations, and that when measured collectively, 

progress being made in the areas of preservation 

and conservation is historic, and will one day be 

celebrated by future generations. 

The Serra Chapel Conservation Project 

- Completion of Stations of the Cross painting 

collection (conservation and framing) 

- Installation of new chandeliers 

- Installation of new lighting of the retablo, St. 

Peregrine Chapel, and nave 

- Repair of St. Peregrine fl oor tiles 

- Installation of fi re safety system 

- Masonry repairs 

- Adobe and brick mortar stabilization 

- Design work for the Sacristy rehabilitation project 

- Completion of the conservation of the historic 

retablo, pulpit and altar. 

The South Wing Conservation Project 

- Adobe Conservation 

- Basket Weave Chimney stabilization 

- Installation of new lighting (motion sensors 

in certain areas, removal of inoperable and 

unattractive obtrusive fi xtures). 

- Installation of fi re safety system 

- Masonry repairs 

- Seismic reinforcement of failing arches 

The Great Stone Church Walkway Improvement Project 

- 34 cubic yards of decomposed granite material were 

imported and carefully installed in order to cover and protect 

the uneven cobblestone walkways around the Great Stone 

Church for improved access. This project was carried out by 

Facilities Staff with help from contractors and specialists 

as needed, as a test project for the possible Central Courtyard 

improvement project. Because the treatment was deemed 

compatible with the Mission and realatively easy to implement, 

it became the impetus for future similar treatments. 

The Central Courtyard Walkway Improvement Project 

- 210 tons of decomposed granite material was imported 

and carefully installed in order to cover and protect the 

uneven cobblestone walkways in the Central Courtyard. 

This project was carried out by Facilities Staff with help 

from contractors and specialists with the goal of improving 

pedestrian access to the site. 

DAR Plaque Cleaning 

- Working with members of the Daughters of the American 

Revolution (DAR), the museum conservation staff cleaned 

a highly degraded 40 year old plaque revealing

its information and making it more accessible 

to the public. 

Camino Real Bell Repair and Cleaning 

- Conservation and facilities staff carefully 

rehabilitated a dilapidated and historic El Camino 

Real bell, pouring a new foundation, removing 

rust, and repainting the old bell to better 

protect it from the elements. 

Investigation of the Father Serra Memorial Statue 

- A conditions assessment was carried out to 

determine a course of action, budget, and approach 

for repairing the Father Serra Statue in the Front 

Courtyard. A missing cross is being considered for 

replacement. Funding for this project is anticipated 

for this next fi scal year to fund its completion. 

Exhibit at the California Welcome Center 

- Promoting the Mission as the number one historic 

site in Orange County in new venues allowed the 

development and conservation staff the 

opportunity to curate a display in Santa Ana to 

promote awareness and visitorship. 

North Wall Repair of the South Wing Foundation Display 

- The South Wing foundation display involves 

shoring up the encased trench which is frequently 

interpreted by Docents and viewed often by 

visitors. Dislodged soils obscured unearthed 

archaeological fi nds, leaving a four inch concave 

cavity in the wall. Volunteers removed the dirt 

accumulations and plant growth within the 

trench while Museum Staff custom fi t an adobe 

brick to shore up the wall and perimeter stones. stones 

Museum Room Upgrades 

- Signage improvements to the museum rooms and 

collection display were carried out all year long. 

Specifi cally installing new coordinating 

information labels for each item in each room 

provided a better appreciation by the public.
