The <strong>Eiffel</strong> <strong>Tower</strong> was built for <strong>the</strong> International<br />
Exhibition held in Paris to celebrate <strong>the</strong> 100th<br />
anniversary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> French Revolution. The tower<br />
was under construction from 1887 through 1889.<br />
This huge tower, originally 300 meters (984 feet)<br />
tall, was built in <strong>the</strong> era just before <strong>the</strong> dawn <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> 20th century, and is truly a monument to <strong>the</strong><br />
opening <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> "steel age." The name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
tower comes from its designer, Gustave <strong>Eiffel</strong>.<br />
