Christmas Card 2009
Thank you to Mr . Rory McNamara, CN Photography
teacher for photographing the beautiful pastel painting of
Cardinal Newman High School painted by CN parent Ms .
Lisa Skelly, mother of Connor Skelly, ’12 . The photograph
was used to create this year’s Christmas card . The original
pastel painting can be seen hanging in the office of Mr .
Mike Truesdell, the highest bidder of the painting at the
2009 Spring Legacy Gala auction . Thank you Rory & Lisa,
for sharing your artistic talents with our community!
ON THE COVER:
John Henry Cardinal Newman’s Canonization progresses with
Pope Benedict XVI’s announcement our patron will now be
addressed as “Blessed,” signifying his elevation from “Venerable”
and his attainment of the second of three steps to Sainthood .
We continue to be inspired by our patron’s words, as shared by
Mr . Rutherford at the first faculty meeting of the year:
“Education is a high word; it is the preparation for knowledge,
and it is the imparting of knowledge in proportion to that
preparation… It is education which gives a man a clear
conscious view of his own opinions and judgments, a truth in
developing them, an eloquence in expressing them, and a force
in urging them .”
“It teaches him to see things as they are, to go right to the
point, to disentangle a skein of thought, to detect what is
sophistical, and to discard what is irrelevant … It shows him
how to accommodate himself to others, how to throw himself
into their state of mind, how to bring before them his own,
how to influence them, how to come to an understanding with
them…”
Our patron’s guidance has informed our school’s mission to
provide our students with the opportunity for:
Academic Excellence: Standardized testing in ACC
Altruistic Spirit: Chris Lashinski, ‘09
Artistic Expression: Ensemble performing “Lead Kindly Light”
Athletic Achievement: P .E . Class hamming it up on new turf
The strains of “Lead Kindly Light”, based on Cardinal Newman’s poem, floated through
the ACC at the Spring Oxford Scholar’s presentation evening in March, played
sweetly by our Cardinal Newman HS ensemble, quietly appreciated by the attendees . This
growth of music in our school, first led by Cody Anderson, next taken up by Morris Acevedo,
who worked with Cody previously, played well to me too . From Mother-Son to school
liturgies, from home football games to Open House, live music is finding more outlets and
opportunities; now it’s not just rallies or the “So Show Me” showcase, it’s new chances to
have events accompanied by students providing live music . Our namesake would understand
the importance of this, the role of music in education, either for those learning or for those
listening, learning to appreciate the wonders of sounds blended and played tunefully . As I
prepared to go to England at Easter, in search of Newman’s lighted path and places, from
London to Oxford to Birmingham, feeling led kindly along by the music, I was hopeful of
seeing for myself the person John Newman was on the eve of his beatification . Knowing that
this elevation would change perceptions of the man, openly discussed as a Saint for his example
and teaching as a Doctor of the Church, I wanted to capture the human side of the about to
be elevated Cardinal . Music seemed to be a part of this, as the words he put down together,
matched to a tune, made real the fervent hope of God’s guidance upon us all . Newman
answered the call he heard, even at social and personal cost, as he attempted to do right and to
help those in greater need . I wanted to walk through those places so important to him .
London’s Oratory on Brompton Road has a statue of Newman at its entrance; the grand
and colourful interior tends to silence both visitor and worshipper . On the left side is a small
lending library, filled with Newman’s tracts and texts . Yet this is a church he only visited rarely
and was set up to replicate the Oratory he opened and lived at in Birmingham; when I visited
there, the rooms he lived in remain the same as when he died in 1890, preserved as he left
them, still containing his books, pictures, and clothes, a time capsule that feels like a step back
into the Victorian age . As a pre-eminent scholar of his nation and times, his influence turned
toleration on Catholics, as the one time Anglican minister showed his dedication to truth as he
studied and searched for it, even if that meant rejection of the socially acceptable position he
held as a High Churchman . By picking up with a persecuted and discriminated church, seen as
fit only for lesser races, his gentle demeanor and gentlemanly behavior broke down a barrier in
British society . In Birmingham, his work with the poor, struggling amidst the great industrial
city, contrasted with the gilded captains of industry, who used them as a cheap labour force,
and left their welfare alone . Newman’s voice and intellect showed the need for care and fair
treatment; his view carried longer and change came for the better, perhaps a reason why he was
seen as a saint in his lifetime .
St . Mary the Virgin in Oxford holds remembrances of martyrs past, both Catholic and
Protestant, who suffered for their opinions and beliefs . For fourteen years, this was Newman’s
church, the pulpit built and named for him, as his sermons drew the interest of the thinkers
and reformers . He began and led what became known as the Oxford Movement, as the
Anglican church awakened to the need of its people, not just its aristocrats and vicars . Here
Newman is the example of the power of thought and word, the ability to win an intellectual
argument, to use and admire the scientific method; he is the great scholar of Trinity College,
whose statue looks over their long garden, the brilliant young man who returned to teach and
became known as the University’s finest mind . Few places hold tradition like Oxford does;
all the more stunning that Newman would resign his teaching and church place while at the
pinnacle of achievement, to become a local parish priest for a small Roman Catholic church
on the outskirts of town . Again, truth won out and Newman could only follow what he felt
and thought to be true . He left what he loved, where he had succeeded, to go serve a need, and
answer a call . Few people give up so much and yet know it is right; John Newman is rightfully
recognized for this exemplary life, beatified in name today, a saint on earth, a man in service of
others, an example for us all .
God Bless,
Each year the Cardinal Newman High School board of directors, through
the efforts of a select committee, honors one alumnus and one member of
the greater community with the John Henry Newman Award . These individuals
are selected from among the many who follow Cardinal Newman’s example and
inspire us by their:
n Lasting and Meaningful service to Cardinal Newman High School and the
greater community,
n Examples of Christian character,
n Gifts of talent, treasure and time in the form of dedication to the mission of
Catholic education .
For the year 2010 the recipients of the John Henry Newman Award are:
Mr . Ken Molinaro, CN ‘72
and
Mr . Henry F . Trione
As an alumnus, Ken Molinaro, CN ‘72, has inspired his Cardinal Newman and
Ursuline classmates to join him in supporting the schools’ enduring tradition
of excellence by offering matching gifts to build endowments . He has also
been instrumental in the success of Cardinal Newman’s Annual Alumni Golf
Tournament by providing generous sponsorships and donations . The funds raised
have allowed dozens of deserving students to attend our schools .
Possibly most telling of Ken’s altruistic spirit is his support of the hungry through
the Redwood Empire Food Bank . Whether through financial support or by his
innovative negotiation with trucking companies to use excess back-haul capacity
to deliver donated fresh produce to those in need, Ken’s contributions have made a
deep and abiding impact on our community at large .
Henry F . Trione has spent the better part of his life as an inspirational voice and
force in supporting important causes at the local, state, and national levels . His
support of secondary education has not been limited to his generous financial gifts .
While a high school student in Fortuna, CA, Henry participated in the band,
most memorably when they performed at the opening ceremony for the Golden
Gate Bridge . Half a century later, he initiated and sponsored the then current
Fortuna High School Band’s repeat performance at the bridge’s fiftieth anniversary
celebration .
Inspired by his love of music and his appreciation for the value of music training,
Henry approached Cardinal Newman and Ursuline with a vision to help both
schools provide greater opportunities for artistic expression . He inspired and
funded the creation of both an Ensemble and a Pep Band, which in only two years,
has drawn praise from the community in the pages of The Press Democrat .
Messrs . Molinaro and Trione were recognized during a private President’s
Reception on Wednesday, December 2, 2009 at the St . Francis Winery . They will
be again acknowledged during the Cardinal Newman Legacy Gala on Saturday,
March 20, 2010 .
Speak with anyone about Cardinal Newman and one of the words you are
sure to hear is “community .” It is one of our greatest blessings and most
valuable assets . Without the commitment and dedication of our students,
faculty, parents, grandparents, alumni, alumni parents, benefactors, and staff,
Cardinal Newman would not be the wonderfully close-knit and inspirationally
diverse community it is . To all those who contribute so selflessly and
generously, we honor and thank you .
Cardinal Newman’s academic Excellence, validated recently with over $5 .3
million in scholarships granted to the class of 2009, continues with members
of the class of 2010 who have accepted the challenge of serving as Newman
Oxford Scholars . Their initial efforts, including well researched essays and
thoughtful observations on the Holy Father’s encyclical, “Caritas in veritate,”
would be well-received at any of the nation’s prestigious universities . Well
done gentlemen!
Cardinal Newman’s altruistic spirit, embodied by the over 10,000 hours
of community service offered by our students every year, continues with the
announcement of the John Henry Newman Award recipients for 2010 . Mr .
Ken Molinaro, ’72 and Mr . Henry Trione exemplify the lifelong commitment
to service that is the hallmark of the Cardinal Newman community . We are
both humbled and inspired by their generous service .
Cardinal Newman’s artistic Expression, captured in a creative breadth of 24
visual and performing arts courses, has been enhanced with the addition of a
talented ensemble led by faculty member Mr . Morris Acevedo of the Berklee
School of Music in Boston . The spirited group of 18 students has introduced
a new and welcome component to campus events . We are thankful to these
gifted students who have chosen to share their talents and school spirit with
our community .
Cardinal Newman’s athletic achievement continues to shine in ways
beyond the tally of win/loss records . As students learn to balance competition
with collaboration, they are better prepared to respond to challenges on
and off the field with honor and dignity . As evidenced by our alumni athletes,
these are some of the most valuable life lessons Cardinal Newman students
will experience .
This year, as we watch our patron, John Henry Cardinal Newman move from
Venerable to Blessed in the process of Canonization, we know we are blessed
to be a part of such a magnificent community .
• Cindi Calos: made 200 pink ribbons which were sold at both athletic
events
• Mr. Guillen’s Video Arts Class: announced events in their weekly
Newman News broadcast
• Campus Ministry: led by John Contreras, students hung signs around
the athletic field announcing the BCA effort and put up pink helium
balloons on the field fence
• Field Maintenance crew, led by Avid Valentin, created and painted a pink
ribbon at the center of the football field
• Associated Student Body Officers, led by Jack Killeen: sold pink bead
necklaces and rubber bracelets throughout the football game
• Athletic Department: Mary Cooper created the pink ribbon decals
• JV and Varsity football players: wore the pink decal on their helmets
for the local Sutter North Bay Women’s Health Center . More importantly,
the October Breast Cancer Awareness event will be incorporated into the
schools’ ongoing commitment to local cancer fund raising efforts through
the school’s Community Based Service Learning program .
Junior Ring Ceremony:
“Growth Is the Only Evidence
of Life .”
The Juniors, Class of 2011, gathered with their fellow
Newman students, administration, faculty, and parents to mark
their ascension to the status of “upperclassmen” at the Junior
Ring Ceremony on Friday, October 23, 2009 . The theme selected
by the Junior Class Council for the Ceremony was the insight
of John Henry Newman that “Growth Is the Only Evidence of
Life .” Consistent with that theme was an introduction delivered
by the Junior Class President, Henry Trione . Coach Tom Bonfigli
addressed the Juniors and reminded them of the importance of
Newman tradition, emphasizing that it was a matter of the heart .
The aspiring Christian Gentlemen resolved, in the spirit of John
Henry Newman, to make Jesus the “Model and Perfecter of their
Faith,” certainly a goal that will require courage .
Father Alvin celebrated Mass, while music was provided by
Newman students under the direction of Mr . Acevedo and Mr .
Truesdell delivered closing remarks . Each Junior received a
commemorative St . Christopher’s medal to remind them of their
Christian journey . The efforts of Mr . Kirk’s Campus Ministry
Class and the Junior Class Council, made it a truly memorable
occasion .
– Jeff Scharfen, Junior Class Moderator
In early September I marked the date October
11, 2009, on my calendar . I had to start preparing
myself, my brother and my dad for the event known
as the Father Son Barbeque . I knew that I was going
to be doing something fun and a little bit demanding
that day and did not want to miss it . October 11, 2009
was the day for Cardinal Newman’s Annual Father Son
Barbeque . A great time to be had by all who attend . The
day started out with all us boys and our fathers outside
the A .C .C . enjoying snacks, and talking . We moved
inside where Father Alvin presented a beautiful mass
for us young men and our fathers . It was a special time
when the boys and their fathers took part in the Mass,
from the readings, to the prayers of the faithful, to the
presentation of the gifts . Father Alvin told us go forward
and remember not only our fathers, but our families too .
After Mass had ended we all gathered in the gym . We
divided up into teams and you could feel the intensity
level rise . For some the games are a time to joke around
with fathers and friends but for us Drakes it is a time
to dominate the rest of the crowd . We went outside to
play volleyball, basketball, and softball . The games were
fun and some rose to the level of trash talk and elbow
throwing . The sportsmanship was great and after the
games we would laugh about it with the other fatherson
teams . After the games were over we had a delicious
barbeque lunch prepared by a team of moms, Mrs . De
Rutte, Mrs . Hinde, Mrs . McCandless, Mrs . Geary, Mrs .
Trione, and my Mom . The Father Son Barbeque has
become a tradition in the Drake household and we will
look forward to it for many years to come .
Fr. Alvin giving blessings
This year’s Newman Oxford Scholars
participated in a panel discussion, lead by
Bishop Daniel Walsh, in response to these
two questions:
n What might Pope
Benedict and Fr .
Christiansen say about the
recent Liturgical readings
of St . James?
n Where do Pope Benedict
and Fr . Christiansen agree
and disagree?
The well researched essays submitted by each of the scholars can be found on
“ We are not considered devoted Catholics by making it known that we attend
Mass often, pray daily and donate a bunch of money for every collection .
(St . ) James challenges us to make our faith known through our good deeds .”
–Andrew Owenson
“ However, Benedict and Christiansen differ in their use of the word
‘institution .’ For Benedict, it means state and world governments, powerful
companies, and anything or anyone else with the power to ensure ‘the common
good’ of all people . In contrast, Drew cuts out anyone in developed society
from benefiting from Charity in Truth by defining ‘institution’ as strictly
Catholic organizations and non-profits .”
Newman Oxford Scholar
Qualifications
Newman Oxford Scholars strive
to be thought leaders in the world . Like
Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman, they
are passionate about the world of ideas . They
are eager to help solve real world challenges
involving poverty and injustice .
John Henry Newman, during his years at
Oxford University, guided students to follow a
rigorous academic curriculum . He encouraged
them, through what became known as the
Oxford Movement, to take a leadership role
in working to improve society through the
government and the Church .
The Newman Oxford Scholar Program is
designed to acknowledge both the exhilaration
and the responsibility of learning . Newman
Oxford Scholars will be presented with
opportunities for learning beyond the
classroom . In addition they will develop their
water polo
This fall, Cardinal Newman Water Polo experienced one of its most
exciting seasons to date! Scheduled with the maximum-allowed
games of twenty-four, both our Varsity and Junior Varsity players
traveled all over Northern California in a marathon of tournaments
and Redwood Empire League games .
Water Polo is a physically grueling sport which requires strength,
agility and aggressiveness, all while treading water and swimming
countless sprints . On top of this, and because of limited pool space,
the teams must practice most mornings before school at Santa Rosa
Junior College at 5:30 am! Obviously, to be successful, water polo
players must be dedicated to their sport and to each other . The 2009
teams were both!
With a record turnout of 31 players, including many strong
freshmen, the players committed to the game, enduring “doubleday”
practices and long weekends . Over the course of the season,
under the guidance of coaches Mark Hartman, Tim Skelly and
Steven Skinner, the teams grew in skill, confidence, spirit and
achievement . The future certainly bodes well for Water Polo at
Newman!
For many of our JV players, this was their first Water Polo
experience and they took to the game quickly, racking up impressive
wins in league and at tournaments .
The Varsity team, led by senior Tim Schoepp, juniors Kyle
Galbraith, Peter Dietzen, Henry Trione, and Colin Garvin, and
sophomores Kevin Simonis, James Scharfen and Connor Skelly
finished third in League . Leading scorers were Kevin Simonis
and Peter Dietzen with a combined total of over 140 goals . Peter
Dietzen was also recently named by USA Water Polo as an
“Academic All American” .
cross country
The 2009 Cross Country season has proven to be challenging yet successful
for the runners . Many of the runners have had personal records every meet .
The NBL finals were one of the fastest NBLs ever, with the league’s top
four runners all running under 15:30 . Both girls and boys teams went to
NCS, the Meet of Champions in November in Hayward . The State Meet
was Thanksgiving weekend in Fresno for those who qualify . This is the most
outstanding and dedicated group of athletics that I have had the privilege to
work with in years .
While the weather was not favorable to cross country finals, we finished
with many runners setting a personal record . Finishing 4th for the men’s
varsity was Brian King with a 5:06 mile pace, followed by Alexi Taylor,
Charles King, Jack Bowlby, Joseph Brunetti, Danny Curran and John Prince .
Cardinal Newman finished 5th, just 2 points behind the 4th place team .
with the players’ commitment to improving as players and as a united
team . Captains Chris Mills and Brant Johnson were both selected the
Most Valuable Players by players and coaches . Freshman Matt Gibson
and Sophomore Steven Anaya excelled as midfielders and Sophomore
Zack Vicini was a strong, vocal leader in defense . The attack was led
by CN basketball players Ryan Darrell and Willis Nelson . Freshman
goalkeeper James Del Curto, one of the best young goalkeepers in the
league, routinely made big saves . Players and coaches voted Freshmen
Freddy Garcia and Daniel Catelli Most Improved Players . With
few graduating seniors on Varsity, many JV players will return for a
second and more successful season of playing together in 2010 . The
athletic department would like to thank Mr . Ryan Smith and first
year assistant coach Mr . Glenn McKevitt for their commitment to the
Varsity Football
1 3 — c a R d I N a l N e w m a N h I g h s c h o o l
The 2009 Varsity football season has been an exciting roller coaster
ride . After losing their three-preseason games to powerhouses Del
Oro, Central Catholic and Palma, the team went on to complete a
6 – 1 NBL season . With a 6 – 4 record, they received a 9th seed for
the NCS playoffs, where they won their opener over Windsor in the
first match up between our schools . As we go to print they are to
play number one seed Petaluma on Nov . 28 . The team has been led
by 17 senior class members with many examples of hard work and
dedication to the program .
Thank you to all of the parents for their support and commitment
to the football program . The team dinners are a labor of love and a
unique weekly team tradition, which allows the team to grow and
be grateful for all that they have .
Great appreciation to the coaches and their families for their time
and dedication to Cardinal Newman and the football program .
These countless hours of preparation gives our students the chance
to compete .
JV Football
This years Junior Varsity Team finished the season with a 9-1 record,
and a perfect 7-0 record in league . The team was lead by several
standouts and the players committed to their season in January of last
year in the weight room . The defense allowed just 26 points during the
entire season and the offense averaged 26 points per game . Cardinal
Newman’s future looks bright with this team moving to varsity next
year . Congratulations on a great season! A special thanks to the
JV coaching staff, Lance Badger, Frank Marshall, Jim Vargas, Judd
Foell, Billy Brown, DJ Sexton and James Antonini for their time and
dedication to the team .
Freshmen Football
The freshman 2009 football team has completed a very successful
season, finishing with a 7 – 1 overall record . There were several exciting
games and the fan support of the freshman level was outstanding .
The freshman program has compiled an impressive 47 – 8 – 1 over
the past 6 seasons under the direction of Head coach Mike Healy .
The Cardinal Newman football program continues to grow and excel .
Congratulations on an outstanding season! Thank you to the dedicated
Yasmin Almanaseer!
This year, the ASB class decided “Fire and Ice” as the
Homecoming theme . All week, starting Monday, we
had “Spirit Week,” with every day something different .
On Friday we had a rally that included the Newman
Band who played great with Kayley Meckstroth,
Tim Schoepp and Max Friedauer as lead singers .
The Cheerleaders preformed great, as always, and the
Homecoming Princesses participated in a game with
a few Newman football players . They announced the
Homecoming Princesses and the senior class voted
for the queen . That night was the Homecoming game
against Elsie Allen . Newman won 48-13 . During half
time the Homecoming Princesses were driven out by
the Cardinal Newman Alumni and Yasmin Almanaseer
was the 2009 Homecoming Queen . The next day was
the Homecoming dance where Zion I and The Jacka
preformed at the Ursuline Gym . The performance was so
real, Zion I stopped for a few minutes and the drummer
of Zion I did a whole freestyle for at least five minutes .
A huge ‘thanks’ goes to the ASB because they did a
lot to get the performers there and put a lot of effort
into the rally and setting up the Ursuline High School
Gymnasium for the dance which looked amazing .
My Friends on “FaithBook” – A Retreat Experience
By Father Alvin
faithbook
C a M P U s M i N i s T R Y - Frosh & s ophomore Retreats
“FaceBook” has become a popular site where an
individual, referred to as a “friend,” is able to post his or her
status – activities, comments, thoughts and many others
– on a “wall” that is visible to other friends . The site may
be a virtual relationship with others but it has now become
another form of communication and support among
friends . The following retreat status can be considered
“posts” not only on FaceBook, but also on FaithBook: they
are reflections of our freshman and sophomore students
regarding their retreat and bonding experiences last
September, 2009, with their classmates and friends .
Matthew saaman (10): At the retreat we did a lot of
activities that involved teamwork – such as the “Wall” and
also we got to talk to each other about personal experiences .
swift Viter (10): The retreat was really fun . The bus ride
down was really fun but seemed really short because I was
so excited to get there . Once we arrived we got to climb the
Rock Wall .
Ryan smith (10): The retreat was filled with activities . The
Wall was the most exciting for me . The Ropes Course
and the Climbing Wall were pretty challenging . I liked
my senior leader, Jamie Ford, and all my classmates in my
group .
Pat and sean Cain (10): On our retreat, we did many team
building activities such as “The Block” and the “The Planks” .
The highlight for me was the lunch – buffet style .
Juan Ramirez (9): The Pyramid exercise was fun . I really
Mitchell Guyot, James Scharfen, Will Hanley & Forrest Granzotto
enjoyed the walk but it was tiring .
Jack Bowlby (9): I will always remember the time when our
group sat on a table under a tree and talked about random
thoughts and life experiences . The Pyramid was fun .
Zach schreeder (9): I enjoyed the Scavenger Hunt, also
the talks as we walk by the vineyards, reflecting on what we
have to do in life .
Matt Boschetti (9): It was great that we were able to have
quiet time for five minutes at the park .
Derrick kobrin (9): The variety of stops and activities
along the way were awesome . Enjoyed the retreat overall .
Academic Excellence, Altruistic Spirit, Artistic Expression
A gift of education lasts a lifetime . And a gift of an
educational endowment lasts forever . There is no better way
to memorialize a loved one or honor a life well lived .
Beyond supporting the education and formation of
tomorrow’s leaders, there are decided tax advantages to
making a planned gift . Income and tax deductions are the
best known rewards . But you can also:
• Enjoy the satisfaction of completing a larger gift than
you thought possible during your lifetime .
• Increase your income.
• Avoid taxes on appreciated stock or real estate.
• Have no management worries.
• Provide for your spouse.
• Save on estate taxes
• Save on probate costs.
• Turn your home into tax savings without having to move.
• Still provide a generous inheritance for your heirs.
There are several ways you can enjoy the rewards the law
gives to the generous . The method you choose will depend
on your personal circumstances and your financial and
charitable objectives .
Thank You
With deep gratitude we acknowledge Mr . Mark
Retirement Funds
Whatever remains in one’s retirement plan may be subject
to both income and estate taxes before passing to one’s
heirs, sometimes leaving heirs with only 20 cents on the
dollar .
Instead of losing 80 percent to taxes, donors can give 100
percent to an institution they care about; a tax-smart gift
for benefactors and a good example to their children .
Gifts of Appreciated Property
or Securities
In most instances, highly appreciated property such as
securities or real estate are deductible at their current fair
market value .
With a low basis, such gifts provide the donor with a large
charitable deduction at low cost .
Many Catholic High Schools have benefited over the years
from bequests of real estate . Those who have such gifts in
mind can simply deed over a home or farm to the school
during their lifetime, continue to live in it the rest of their
lives, and enjoy a sizable income tax deduction for making
their gift . No money changes hands, no moving trucks
appear . It’s the contributor’s commitment to a good cause
that earns the deduction .
Donors who have supported Cardinal Newman during
C a M P U s i M P R O V E M E N T s
Just before the end of the fiscal year alumnus
Mike Nonella, ’81 assembled a team to handle the first phase of
our ‘CLassROOM gREENiNg’ project .
Through …our best, The Cooperative Campaign we have raised
over $360,000 toward the goal of $1 .5 million . Specific details
of what the architects and engineers envision are available on
our website under ADVANCEMENT / CONSTRUCTION
PROJECTS / CLASSROOM GREENING .
The first phase, completed as the students returned to campus in
August, resulted in the replacement of an expensive-to-maintain
forty-five year old boiler with two miniscule on-demand boilers .
The donations received for this capital improvement will result
in lower operating costs and the elimination of the maintenance
costs associated with the old boiler .
In addition to the boiler replacement, all of the pipes it serviced
were removed from the roofs of classrooms #1 – #15 and
returned to the perimeter trenches where they were originally
placed in 1964 . This has now freed the roofs for the next phases
including the installation of skylights and solar tubes to brighten
the back walls of each classroom . Next to the new skylights and
solar tubes will be placed turbine vents that will allow for the air
circulation these fifteen classrooms lack .
Aerial photo of Cardinal Newman’s new All-Weather Turf by Will Buck, ’10 and School Times
When you come to campus, take a look in classroom #1 . This
is becoming the prototype to help with additional fundraising
efforts . Mr . Bonfigli’s classroom is now equipped with the latest
technology incorporated in the heat exchanger served by the
new on-demand boilers . It can be controlled from within the
classroom . It automatically cycles on to ventilate the room when
carbon dioxide levels exceed acceptable levels . And it operates
in nearly complete silence .
As these efforts continue, we will incorporate solar panels on the
flat roofs, including a new covering over the locker area . The age
of the current rain collectors makes perfect seals against leaks
impossible . All of Avid’s best efforts to anticipate leaks can be
sunk (pun intended) with a powerful storm .
...our best
At the same time Mike Nonella, ’81 was guiding the
subcontractors through the first phase of the ‘Classroom
Greening’ project he was also working closely with
CalUltimateTurf to prepare our campus for the installation
of an aLL-WEaTHER TURF surface for baseball, soccer,
lacrosse and PE classes . There are terrific photos of this newly
completed facility on our website, as well .
We are blessed that these improvements to our classrooms
and to our campus facilities are funded solely by donations in
support of these specific objectives . To all who have donated
to these projects … and to those who will help support these
improvements with their gifts, we express our deep appreciation .
Feel free to donate online, today .
Link Day 2009
The Link Day for Freshman Orientation was a fun event . I thought the highlight
of the day was the team tower building contest . There was so much energy in
the Gym during that activity . It is evident that the class of 2013 is a group of
competitive guys . I expect great things from them .
The Link Crew did a great job leading their new schoolmates through the
program . There were many examples of leadership amongst that group .
Specifically, as the Link Crew applauded the freshmen entering the Gym to begin
the program, Evan Merritt shook hands with each member of the class of 2013 .
He introduced himself and welcomed each to Cardinal Newman . Senior Jack
James did an outstanding job speaking to the group about getting involved in
student council and other activities .
I would like to thank the parents, staff, and students who assisted with Link Day .
was 8 weeks old, Hamlin experienced the life of a
not-so-average Cardinal Newman student . Hopefully,
his brush with Homer and Dante in World Literature
will serve him well in his new career . At the end of
his five to six months of training, it is our hope that
Hamlin will become a working Guide Dog for the
Blind . Before he left, Hamlin thanked everyone for
their kindness--and the occasional sandwich dropped
on the floor .
well attended with about 65 alumni from both schools attending
the events with their families . Many flew in from out of state
or drove long distances to make the event . Classmates were
excited to catch up . They were also excited to be back on the
two campuses and see all the new and exciting changes going on
On Wednesday, October 14, 2009 all freshman, sophomore and junior
students had the opportunity to attend Career Day 2009 . The sixth annual
Career Day was held on campus and hosted by the Cardinal Newman
Alumni Association . They had an impressive list of Career Day speakers
where students had the opportunity to hear their selected 3 top career
choices from a list of 35 careers . The students also attended a general
session where keynote speaker, Tom Hakel, ’78, asked the students to
capture at least one thing from what they learned from Career Day . He
hoped they captured and shared the ‘nuggets’ from this special day .
First Monthly Alumni Social a Success!
The first monthly Alumni Social was held on November 18th at the Equus Restaurant and
Lounge and it was a great success . A lively crowd of Alums, representing various classes between
‘74 and ‘82, took full advantage of the “hall pass” provided and showed up for happy
hour cocktails, Alumni Association hosted hors d’oeuvres and lots of camaraderie (aka lies
and tall stories!!) . This event resurrects days long ago when the Alumni Association held
monthly “meetings” at Lena’s and Michele’s, two very historic landmarks that have long
since left our community, where Alumni business was transacted, friends were reconnected,
networking took shape and, yes, a fair share of cocktails consumed while lies and tall stories
were shared . It was such a wonderful time that the Alumni Association Committee (AAC)
decided to reinstitute the affair . So each and every month the AAC will send all its prized
local Alums a “hall pass” (Bill Rousseau called it a “get out of jail free card”!!) so that everyone
may have free reign to join us . Like we said in the invitation, no fundraising, no pitches,
no rope’n you into anything, just a couple of hours to simply hang out with a bunch of
great guys and hopefully do some long overdue rekindling of relationships with your fellow
Alums . We hope to see you in December!!! Here are all the future dates so mark them on
your calendar!! Remember… . .5:30 to 7:30 at Equus in Santa Rosa… .be there… .Aloha!!!
The third annual Cardinal Newman Tennis Tournament was
held on a very nice cool weekend, which all who attended the earlier
events welcomed . This year’s tournament saw some new faces as well as
the regular entrants from the two previous tournaments . We had a good
number of our alumni enter, including Alex Krohn ‘00, Connor Van
Alstyne ‘06, Everett Corvino and Kyle Rousseau ’05, Jesse Amaral ’79,
Allan Henderson ‘74 . There were four different draws: Men’s Doubles,
Mixed Doubles, Women’s Doubles and Women’s Singles . We had a
great turn out for all events and each draw had winners and consolation
winners .
Father Alvin and I had a great time running the event with the help of
some of our tennis players from last year’s team: Brendan Henderson
and Peter Dotti . We couldn’t have done it without the great help from
Bill Rousseau ’75 of the Alumni Association and John and Carol Drake
of G and G Market, who put on a great display of food and drinks . I also
would like to thank the Hurst family for donating their wine for prizes .
The tennis was very competitive . Most matches went three sets and the
length and level of the points played were incredible . Everyone had great
attitudes and showed their spirit with their play and attire . Kudos go
to Geri Amaral and Wendy Tigner for looking great in their matching
outfits! We even had an addition of Kady Pooler, sister of freshman
Kyle King who played on the pro tour for two years and is now a teacher
in Richmond, CA . Kady was nice enough to put on a tennis clinic on
Sunday for the singles players . I think we all learned a lot from her
instruction . Thanks, Kady!
I would like to again thank everyone for entering, playing and enjoying
this fun event! I look forward to expanding our tournaments to include
more players and running many more in the future .
Moms in Touch Begins at
Cardinal Newman!
This Fall CNHS joins the ranks of the national (and international) community
of moms who meet weekly to pray for their children, teachers, administrators and
school . The purpose of our Moms in Touch group is to pray for our sons and that our
school will continue to be guided by biblical values and high moral standards . Using
the Bible as our guide, we pray specifically for our teenage sons as they navigate their
way through these exciting yet often turbulent high school years .
We also devote time to pray for academic and sports events (i .e ., SAT tests, football
games, etc .), activities (dances, community service), teachers and coaches, and our
school at large (protection, respect) .
“Where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am in the midst of them.”
-Matthew 18:20
Are you aware of a specific prayer need within the CN community? We also receive
confidential prayer requests through our e-mail, momsintouch@cardinalnewman .org .
Do you believe in the power of prayer? If so, please come and join us on Thursday
Fun in the Fall
The Cardinal Newman community gathered together on Saturday, October 24,
2009 to enjoy this year’s Fun in the Fall . The evening started off with wine tasting
their award winning wines! Our school families provided wonderful appetizers to
compliment these wines . The fall flower arrangements were beautiful thanks to The
to The Remedies followed the wine tasting with 270 guests in attendance .
Annual Campus Clean-up Day
Saturday, September 5th was in the middle the long
Labor Day holiday weekend but that didn’t stop a group of
dedicated volunteers from spending half a day preparing the
Athletic Field facilities for upcoming home soccer and football
games . Key projects included power washing the home and
visitor bleachers plus cleaning and stocking the Bird Cage in
the Charlie “Tuna” Dahl Athletic Field House . Many thanks to
this fabulous crew for their time, equipment and supplies!
2009 Jog-A-Thon
Jog-A-Thon, a tradition at Cardinal Newman
for over 25 years, helped raise funds for athletic programs and
facilities around campus . This year’s students jogged, walked,
danced and ran around the Newman track, as ASB students
and CN DJ Team led by
Tyler Laron entertained
all! With over $80,000
raised so far, this student
run fund-raiser continues
to help support Cardinal
Newman . If you’d like to
sponsor your favorite jogger,
there’s still time! Send your
tax deductible donation to
the CN Advancement Office .
Congratulations to all the
students and thank you to
all our sponsors for another
successful Jog!
In late October the partner from Lautze & Lautze assigned to
supervise the audit of Cardinal Newman presented to the finance committee of the
board of directors the information provided in these pie charts .
The complete audited statements can be found under the Governance tab beneath
About CNHS on our website .
Lautze & Lautze confirmed that we are succeeding in placing our resources where
they belong: They are benefiting Cardinal Newman students . Compelling examples
are provided by the fundraising support of parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty, staff,
and benefactors . We must express deep gratitude to all .
Ignoring a one-time reserve established by the board of AMJHN Foundation, Inc .,
our auditors were most impressed to share with the finance committee that for every
dollar raised by Cardinal Newman above tuition, less than $0 .21 was spent to raise
that dollar . Our peer institutions, on the other hand, average an expenditure of over
$0 .30 to raise $1 .00 . We are indeed grateful that many people make this success
possible . Thank you to all .
