S
ukkot - The Holiday That
Teaches Us About The Daily
Grind (And I’m Not Talking About
Coffee)
When you come down from the
mountain, what next? The
greatest moments in Jewish
existence are the giving of the
Torah on Mount Sinai and the
Exodus from Egypt. But what
happens on day 2? The day after we get married,
we need to work out how to live on a daily basis with
the other person. The day after our first child is born,
we have to deal with diapers and sleep-deprivation.
The day after we get our dream job, we start to
think, “Can I do this?”
Sukkot is just after the Jewish New Year when we
have hit spiritual highs and, in theory, is in a time
where we are descending in excitement and
commitment. But the holiday of Sukkot is perfect for
this. We live in sukkot (booths/huts) in which life is a
bit more difficult and a lot more uncomfortable. The
Israelites did the same when they dwelled in sukkot
in the wilderness. Long forgotten was the thunder
and lightning at Mount Sinai and the water parting at
the Sea of Reeds. All that was left was a long trek
through the desert.
The freedom that they had won could only be
solidified if they made it to the Land of Israel. There
was hard work to do. Every day was a constant
struggle to fight for freedom, getting past everyday
obstacles, but each small step towards the Land
was a small victory.
In marriage, sharing a silly in-joke is a small victory
in making a relationship which might have ups and
downs. In child-rearing, hearing your child say a new
word is a small victory even though they tantrum a
bit too much. In your job, completing one small piece
of a large project is a victory.
We have to enjoy the morning after the great highs
and the many steps on the journey which contribute
to the next peak experience. That’s why we live in
huts for the week of Sukkot. To teach us the daily
grind contributes to the final goal step by step.
Moadim l’simchah – May we all have seasons of joy
- (Fleetwood Mac)
As I write this column, we are still preparing the logistics for the High Holy
Day events. Yet, as you read this, they are already over and we begin
October. I hope you enjoyed this year’s services.
This month we explode into programming that “brings to life” components of
our shared vision of community, lifelong learning, soulful worship and social
justice, the following are just a few highlighted events:
Temple Sinai’s 2nd annual Gala, Saturday October 27 - honoring Dr. Lawrence
Copeland, where we will thank him for his vision in the creation of Temple Sinai and
the explain miracle surrounding it.
The Moskow Jewish Lecture Series, Sunday October 14 - This is a free program
that one of our congregants created and funded for the greater community, to engage
in dialogue on “Fresh Perspectives on US/Israel Relationships”. It features 3
nationally renowned speakers: Avraham Burg, Joe Klein, and Dennis Prager. It will be
held at Artemus Ham Hall on the UNLV campus and tickets are now available online.
Adult education - This years exciting curriculum is now available and if you did not
get the information at the High Holy Day services, you can contact the office for this
year’s brochure.
Youth Program - we have multiple events and ideas planned for both the middle
school and high school age congregants. For more information contact either Phil
Barney or Jen Kriskey through the temple office. We hope our school-age pre- and
post-b’nai mitzvah students will “try these out”.
Temple Sinai’s Torah Project and Capital Campaign - this will be officially rolledout
in November and will detail the first program that includes the entire congregation
in creating the Temple Sinai Torah.
New Building - We hope you all also saw the renderings of how the completed
Temple Sinai Campus will look on the display boards at services last month. More
information and how you can participate and help is forthcoming.
Amazingly, these are just a few of the highlights of this month. We do hope that you not only
participate, but also get involved with an area that interests you.
The entire board of trustees and volunteer base of Temple Sinai not only haven’t stopped
thinking of tomorrow, we are embracing and looking forward to it with our soulful services and
exciting programming.
Hope to see you soon at the temple !
Dear Temple Family,
I’d like to acknowledge our amazing High Holy
this year.
your commitment and your passion. In the name of our
congregation, Thank you!
Every Jewish holiday is infused with a special energy to help us
work on a particular character trait, and to develop certain
aspects of our lives. The mitzvot of the holiday are tools to help
us achieve the goal of the time.
Often, the key to discovering this focus is found in the prayers.
The Siddur (prayer book) refers to Sukkot as zman simchateinu
(the time of our joy). Sukkot is designed as a one-week
workshop on joy. For seven days, we move out of our wall-towall
carpeted, air-conditioned house, into a little hut called a
Sukkah.
But how is this supposed to make us happy?
The lesson is that the physical objects with which we surround
ourselves are not what make us happy. A person can live in a
gorgeous home and be absolutely miserable. Or, he can live in
a shabby hut and be ecstatically happy. The key to joy is
success in our relationships. This includes our relationship with
other people, with ourselves, and with God.
Because some people are wealthier and have more than
others, it's easy to forget that deep down we are really all equal.
The holiday of Sukkot is a special time when G-d helps us to
unite and melt our differences away. G-d asks everyone, rich or
poor, to leave their homes for a week and dwell in an outdoor
sukkah, a simple, temporary hut with a roof made out of
branches. Being all under the same “roof” of the sukkah is a
mitzvah that helps us remember that we really are all equal and
to treat each other with equal kindness and respect.
At Temple Sinai we want to embrace this energy celebrating
Sukkot together on Friday night, October 5 at 7:30 pm. We’ll sit
in our own beautiful Sukkah and pray together and wave our
lulav in six directions to symbolize that God is everywhere.
On sukkot, we can fulfill the mitzvah of inviting guests into our
Sukkah. This year, we encourage you to try inviting some
friends over to our Temple Sinai — perhaps even someone who
you don't know very well. Invite them to rejoice before G-d as a
community.
On Simchat Torah, the last passage in the Torah is read
(Deuteronomy is concluded), and then the first passage in the
Torah is immediately read (Genesis is begun). Thus, there is an
unbroken cycle of reading Judaism's holiest book. Jews are
reminded that the Torah is a circle that never ends.
Simchat Torah is a joyful holiday, as love of the Torah is openly
expressed.
There are processions, called Hakafot, carrying Torah scrolls
around the synagogue. As many people as possible are given
the honor of carrying a Torah scroll in these processions. Joyful
singing and dancing, both in the synagogue and in the street,
are part of Simchat Torah Hakafot.
So come for Simchat Torah, to celebrate with us on Sunday,
October 7 at 6pm! We’ll dance with the Torah and unroll it as a
community for us to chant the ending and the beginning. We’ll
also wave flags and eat apples and honey. We look forward to
seeing you all,
May G-d Bless You
B’Shalom,
T
he Temple Sinai Religious School is off to
a great start! It is always wonderful to start
off the New Year with our friends, both old
and new.
Our focus this year is to create a fun and
supportive educational environment that
promotes the lifelong Jewish learning
process. The Rabbi and some of our
students helped us out on the first day of Sunday School in
modeling the fact that we learn throughout our lives. The
process doesn’t stop at B’nei Mitzvah, Confirmation,
Graduation. We are life long learners.
Each Sunday we will be starting our Religious School with a
school wide Mifgash (gathering) where we will encounter and
welcome our Jewish spirit. It is during this time that we are
building our school ruach (spirit). Our children have created
grade level chants to show their ruach, and we are in a school
wide competition to see which class has the most. As part of
this competition, each Sunday the students will be presented
with a different goal for the following Sunday. So far, in
September, we have collected canned goods and brought items
to decorate the Sukkah. We love to see our students show their
ruach, and we encourage their parents to join us at Mifgash
(9:30-10:00am) to experience it themselves, as part of their own
lifelong learning practice.
A few important dates to note: On Saturday, October 6, the 7th
grade class and their families will be joining Cantor Gindlin at
her home to experience Havdalah, the service with which we
say goodbye to the Sabbath. On Friday, October 12, the 3rd
and 4th grade students will be participating in our Shabbat
service. There will be a potluck dinner for these students and
their families directly before the service. On Sunday, November
4, there will be a B’nei Mitzvah Orientation for all of our 6th
graders and their parents during Sunday School. Please note
that there will be no Religious School on Sunday, October 28 as
a part of the Nevada Day Weekend.
On a personal note, I have very much enjoyed meeting each of
you. I appreciate your welcoming me and my family to the
community, and I thank you for trusting me with your children.
This is going to be a great year!
Shenker Academy News
רקנש רפס תיב תושדח
n Earlychildhood News, there was an article
written by Connie Hines titled Developing
Multiple Intelligences in Young Learners. This
article went into great detail about the multiple
intelligence theory.
To keep things brief I will summarize the
conclusion of the article. Ms. Hines wrote that
the multiple intelligence theory promotes the
development of all seven intelligences in
young children. This method provides a structure that identifies
the way each child learns; builds on their strongest abilities;
allows them to become more intelligent by exposing them to
various ways of learning; allows individual interests and needs
to be met; and uses teaching strategies that make learning
enjoyable and successful for each child.
Through learning environments that offer hands-on materials in
a variety of stimulating ways and experiences that the children
can individually choose, and by providing learning areas that
create natural opportunities for children to be active and fully
engaged in group or solo play, we better serve and meet the
needs of more children.
The Shenker Academy uses Howard Gardner’s Multiple
Intelligence Theory to develop our classroom environments and
lesson plans. Our classrooms are designed to support all of the
seven multiple intelligences that are listed and explained in the
article.
I want to end this article with how Howard Gardner defines
intelligence: the ability to solve problems encountered in real
life, generate new problems to solve, and the ability to make
something or offer a service that is valued within ones culture.
These three things are happening in every classroom on a daily
basis with our students.
From Your Sisterhood
םכלש תויחא ןודעוממ
ell I hope everyone’s had an opportunity
to soulfully reflect on last year’s triumphs,
tribulations and character building
experiences. As I look back, my first thought
is how fast the year has passed, how many
things I have accomplished, and of course,
how many things I have yet to accomplish.
I remember being young and thinking the
summer would last forever, and now I see
time slip through my fingers daily. “Where has the time gone?”
Well I hope the time has gone to family, mitzvot and personally
satisfying experiences. I challenge each and every one of you
to make a point of doing something special for yourself; never
forget a smile is contagious; and kindness is strength!
The Temple Sinai Sisterhood has 2 events to round out the
year:
We would love to see everyone tripping the light fantastic at
the Gala this year and Dance lessons at Delgado Studio
can get you there, Sunday October 21, at 11:30 am in the
Sanctuary.
December 13 – Chanukah Pot Luck Party
We are always looking for event hostesses and this is a great
way to get to know the women of the Sisterhood and have them
get to know you. I will be recognizing the Sister(s) who can
bring in the most attendance and stir up the most activity.
Now don’t be shy! You will have a team of support, but
remember this will be your party.
Also, in an effort to be prepared for the monthly general
meetings we will have an RSVP process so there is enough
food and activities for all. Please get used to telling us you are
coming by using the calendar at www.TempleSinaiLV.org/
calendar.
As always any women who is a member of Temple Sinai is
welcome to join the Sisterhood. I have met so many wonderful
women these last few weeks and know there are many more of
you to still meet so please introduce yourself to me if the
opportunity comes up.
Warm wishes
White Elephant Exchange
םישמושמ םיצפח תריכמ
here were laughs, laughs, and giggles
coming from the room when the Sisterhood
held their White Elephant Exchange Event.
Wonderful gifts were exchanged and the most
unique being a gift wrapped in a salad spinner
box and that item is still a huge mystery.
It went around the room three times and no one opened it, all
suspecting it was an added kitchen helper. What a surprise for
the owner of the “salad spinner” when she found this item
wasn't spinning. And what was it!
Come to the next Sisterhood event to learn the secret of the
White Elephant Exchange.
Kudos to Debra Kramer for her talent and vision which
encouraged the ladies to participate in the event. The food was
delicious, the room tastefully decorated and the tables
decorated delightfully. A good time was certainly had by the
ladies of the Sisterhood.
A Lovely Evening with Keith Barany
ינרב תיק םע םעינ ברע
n Wednesday August 29, Sisterhood hosted a wonderful evening with comedian Keith Barany. While
his Jewish themed humor was thoroughly entertaining, his interaction with our audience was absolutely
refreshing.
He was quick, clever and outstanding.
Keith's resume runs deep from being a contributing writer on the hit show “Seinfeld” and currently
contributes to the Jimmy Kimmel Show.
He currently owns PG Comedy and works with up and coming comedians as well as motivational
speakers to work an audience from all corners.
We hope to do this again It was a huge success!

A
few weeks ago, I volunteered to keep a
guest company during services. Her name
was Rebecca, and she had found us on the
internet. She had just flown to Las Vegas that
day as a tourist and came to us for
Shabbat. She told me that she was from a
farm in Kansas. I wondered how many Jewish
farmers there were in Kansas and thought it
was unusual. As we sat side by side, she
participated in every prayer, read the Hebrew
rather than the transliteration and knew all the melodies. She
told me that her synagogue used the same book.
I had a sudden vision of Jews all over the world sitting in their
synagogues every Friday night doing and saying exactly what
we are doing and saying. Powerful thought! We are united as a
people in our services. Suddenly the repetitiousness of services
was no longer boring. It was uplifting. We are all doing it
together!
A few days later, I read an article in the URJ, written by Rabbi
Roger Herst entitled “Repetition in Prayer”. I’m not sure I agree
with all that he says, but I will copy his last few sentences for
you to read.
I like praying in the synagogue not because I believe God is
listening to me.
I do it to link myself with other Jews throughout the ages who
are reciting the same prayers. It unifies us as a people in time
and geography.
Is it boring? It certainly can be. But how bad is that when
compared with the reward of bonding with fellow Jews?
I take exception to his intimation that G-d isn’t paying attention
as we pray, and that it is boring, but I did experience the
bonding myself and thought I would share it with you.
halom Temple Sinai,
For those of you who don't know me, I'm
Phil Barney, Temple Sinai's new Youth
Coordinator and 7th Grade teacher-student
at the Religious School.
As you read this, we'll have emerged from
the Days of Awe, on the other side of the
tunnel of Teshuvah.
This means a couple of things:
1) Return: we have returned to Sunday school and youth group
activities, hopefully even more excited to get involved and get
engaged than when we parted in May.
2) Relationship: we are stronger and more connected as a
community, and ready to meet the challenges ahead together.
3) Renew: we've come back in a New Year and as new people.
With newness comes infinite possibilities. I hope that you all will
help me to imagine, and build on, these possibilities as we work
together to create a vibrant youth community.
