at a question-and-answer session 

and convocation speech today. 

Stephen L. Carter will converse 

with university community 

members during a 1:30 p.m. session 

in 303 Chemistry and Physics 

Building. He will also deliver 

the keynote speech during the 

Academic Excellence Convocation 

at 3:30 p.m. in Texas Hall.

criminal justice honor 

society last spring, Dahlia 

Ramirez was responsible 

for the organization’s annual 

job fair. 

Criminal justice senior 

Shanon Ballard, vice president 

of Alpha Phi Sigma, 

called Ramirez reliable, prepared 

as a leader and always 

willing to lend a hand. 

Shortly after Ramirez 

graduated in spring 2006, 

she died at 27 from lupus, 

leaving behind two children. 

This year’s Criminal Justice 

Career Fair will be held 

from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday 

in the University Center 

Palo Duro Lounge in her 

honor and will raise money 

for a scholarship benefiting 

Ramirez’s children. 

“The job fair will allow 

students to identify potential 

employers while gaining 

knowledge relevant to 

the particular areas of interest 

in the criminal justice 

field,” said Alex del

Twenty-six agencies will 

attend, but the organization 

is expecting at least 30 to 

come. 

Several hundred students 

attended last year’s 

fair, but Shahrzad Pakbin, 

criminal justice junior and 

society president, said the 

group is expecting more 

to attend this year because 

the fair is open to everyone 

and should be of interest 

to students majoring in accounting, 

psychology and 

forensics. 

Agencies that will be 

present include the FBI, the 

Drug Enforcement Administration, 

the Irving, Dallas 

and Arlington police departments 

and the Tarrant 

County Advocate Program. 

“It’s a great way to know 

people, to get your foot in 

there,” Pakbin said. “There 

are so many options out 

there.” 

Ballard said students 

should bring their résumés, 

make sure to ask for business 

cards, dress appropriately 

and expect to get information 

about different 

jobs and internship opportunities.

Fuzzy Knowledge Graduate student had developed a new 

entire campus, especially during 

the convocation. 

“I think one of the things that 

is so appropriate for the convocation 

is integrity and respect 

and the ability to have discourse 

among people who don’t agree,” 

she said. “It’s a very important 

message.” 

Carter has written several 

books on subjects including affir- 

mative action, law and religion, 

civility and religion in politics. 

In 1998 Carter wrote an article 

for Yale Alumni Magazine, 

titled “Just Be Nice,” condemning 

the growing lack of “respect for 

rules of conduct.” Carter noted 

that as a grade-schooler, he and 

his classmates were taught general 

etiquette. 

“Somehow nobody – no chil- 

dren, no parents – objected to 

what nowadays would surely 

be viewed as indoctrination,” he 

wrote.

her four years in her position, the 

number of academic dishonesty 

cases has fluctuated between 160 

and 180 cases per year.

A Healthy Experience 

Environmental fair offers information and food 

Health and environmental booths filled the University 

Center mall as students, organizations 

and companies found creative ways to share 

information at Wednesday’s Celebrating People 

and Planet fair. 

Plants, bracelets, pamphlets and ice cream were all given 

away at the fair. Education junior Nicola Brown’s arms were 

filled with bags of information, gifts and her Vicks plant. 

“I grow herbs at home too, and this is one that I don’t 

have,” she said. 

The 440 Alliance performed live at the fair. Three of the 

four band members are university alumni. 

Drew “High Notes” Johnson said he was hoping it didn’t 

rain because of the electrical equipment on stage. 

Nursing junior Eric Hart stood beside the School of 

Nursing booth and asked students if they knew what their

Student to help homeless 

Longterm project should launch 

in May and will focus on health

and 2 million people spend the night 

homeless. 

a computer science and engineering 

graduate student at the university is 

developing a system to improve healthcare 

for the homeless. 

Kallol Mahata is working with 

Healthcare for the Homeless-Houston 

to develop the first electronic medical 

record system that will convert the traditional 

method of recording data from 

homeless patients on paper into a more 

efficient electronic method to make 

tracking patients easier. 

“With the homeless, it’s not the patient 

going to the doctor but the doctor 

going to the patient, and you can’t 

follow up with patients with the traditional 

model of healthcare,” Mahata 

said. “The biggest problem with this 

population is that they have had so 

many failures in life that when you sim- 

ply ask them to come back, they look at 

it as a failure.” 

Mahata said the project is developing 

a goal-negotiated care system in 

which the doctors will try to determine 

patients’ goals for treatment. 

For example, some patients think 

they must have their backs examined 

because they cannot find a job. Mahata 

said this was a more positive approach 

geared toward patients wanting to get 

treated and wanting to follow up with 

physicians. 

“When they achieve that goal, it is a 

success for them, and it’ll build up their 

confidence,” Mahata said. 

St. Luke’s United Methodist Church/ 

Outreach Council and the Lyons Foundation 

are funding the project, and 

Mahata is working closely with David 

Buck, associate professor of medicine 

at Baylor College of Medicine and president 

of the healthcare organization. 

“My parents worked with Dr. Buck 

and Mother Theresa in India. I’m really 

impressed by the way he handles his 

patients,” Mahata said. 

Buck said medical practitioners have 

been trying to develop a system like 

Mahata’s for 10 years and that his work 

on the project for the past two years has

Buck said healthcare for the homeless 

is not confined to Texas but is a 

nationwide problem that he hoped this 

new system would help reduce. 

The system will use distinguishing 

factors such as tattoos, fingerprints and 

even aliases to help keep track of homeless 

patients. Buck said the electronic 

system will promote continuity even if 

the patient was not seen by the same 

doctor. 

James Turley, UT Health Science Center

professor, said the system was designed 

to be easy to use and affordable. 

“This was an attempt to take high 

technology to a population that rarely 

sees high technology,” Dr. Turley said. 

“The system has to be designed to be 

terribly simple to use.” 

Mahata said the system is in its 

final stages of testing, and he hopes to 

launch it by May.

Memorial for Virginia Tech 

victims at noon Friday 

There will be a memorial service at noon 

Friday on the Central Library mall to recognize 

victims of the virginia Tech massacre. 

President James Spaniolo will speak on 

behalf of the university. A faculty member 

and a student governance member will also 

speak, though their names have not been 

announced. 

The university’s RoTC color guard will 

present flags during the ceremony and 

music assistant chair Rick Bogard will play 

“Taps.” 

Frank Lamas, Student Affairs vice president, 

said the ceremony will include a banner 

for the campus community to sign. The 

banner will be sent to virginia Tech to show 

support for the university and the families of 

those who died. 

He also said students may place flowers 

at the base of the flags, which will be flown 

at half-staff to honor the victims. 

Lamas said there may be additional 

speakers but some details regarding the 

ceremony are tentative because of time 

constraints.

campus community to take part in the ceremony. 

“We know how much our community 

means to us, and virginia Tech is part of our 

higher education community,” he wrote. “in 

wake of this disaster, the UT-Arlington community

to Shaun of the Dead in any 

way, so that was intended. And 

it was a bit different. 

Q: What are you working on 

now? 

Pegg: A couple things. Nick 

and I are writing something 

that’s actually going to be shot 

here. It’s set in America. We 

had a an idea of what will be 

the third in our “blood and ice 

cream” trilogy. 

Edgar Wright: I’ve got a couple 

of things, too — a few scripts 

in development. I have a trailer 

in Grindhouse that Simon and 

Nick make appearances in. That 

was fun.

Wright: My trailer’s deliberately 

nonsensical. It’s like one 

of those horror films in the ’70s 

where you watch the thing, and 

there’s like a voice-over and a 

marketing spin and lots of action. 

And you go, “I have no idea 

what that film’s about.” 

Q: What was it like to have 

your own Shaun of the Dead action 

figures? 

Pegg: When I got my 12-inch 

talking Shaun figure, I looked in 

the box behind the cellophane 

and remembered having the Incredible 

Hulk and Steve Austin. 

I’m very proud to be an action 

figure. 

When we were designing the 

characters, we wanted Shaun 

to be very recognizable — the 

white shirt, the red tie. It’s quite 

an easy costume to pull off. I ac-

blasted a grand-slam in 

the bottom of the third inning 

in game two to not only win 

the game for the Lady Mavericks 

but to tie UTA’s home-run 

career record. 

The record was set at 22 in 

1982 by Cindy Spradling. 

“I just wanted to get the 

momentum back on our side,” 

Nelson said. “We’re too good 

of hitters to lay down as a 

team.” 

The excitement came amid 

the Lady Mavericks hosting a 

doubleheader against the Tulsa 

Golden Hurricane on Wednesday. 

The Mavs split the series, 

losing the first but rebounding 

in the second to get a win. 

“I’m happy with the split,” 

head coach Debbie Hedrick 

said. “We were dragging a bit 

in the first game after having 

the weekend off.” 

UTA’s loss halted a 10-game 

win streak as Tulsa clawed 

out a 1-0 victory in the early 

game. 

The competition’s only run 

came in the fifth inning when 

left fielder Brooke Smart doubled 

to left field to get on base 

and later score off a single to 

right center by second baseman 

Angela Osbon. 

“The defense played good, 

as did [Heather] Fortenberry,” 

Hedrick said. “The got 

us by playing deep, much like 

baseball players, and getting 

our long balls.”

The Mavericks golf team ended 

its season Wednesday, placing 

fifth at the Southland Conference 

Tournament in Kerrville. 

Tournament-favorite Lamar 

ran away with the competition, 

starting slow in the first round 

and then picking up in the second 

and third, winning by an overwhelming 

33 strokes. As a team, 

Lamar finished with a 39-underpar 

825. 

“playing Lamar was playing 

against the best team a program 

that has won 20 championships 

has ever had,” UTA head coach 

Jay Rees said. “They are five great 

players, and they are confident, 

and they expect themselves to 

perform on a high level, and they 

do. I have the utmost respect for 

the way they play.” 

Lamar claimed the top of the 

leader board in the individual 

standings as well. Five of the topsix 

players, including medalist 

Dawie Van Der Walt, played for 

the Cardinals. 

Southeastern Louisiana was 

the only other team to finish 

below par, shooting a six-under 

858 to finish in second place. Lion 

Hugo Leon was the only non- 

Lamar player to finish under par. 

After falling behind in the first

their talent in the competition’s

Scene critic 

When an album could be a soundtrack for 

a movie, I give it props beyond the content of 

what an average CD brings. 

Switchfoot’s sixth album Oh! Gravity. is just 

that. The album doesn’t alternative-rock you to 

death, but varies the tracks and the band stays 

true to what it is as a solid rock band. 

The first four songs, “Oh! Gravity.,” “American 

Dream,” “Dirty Second Hands” and “Awakening” 

get you pumped with

what can be described as roadtrip 

pop-rock that will immediately 

put you in a good mood 

and get your head nodding. 

There is a good balance between 

slower songs and faster 

songs. If any specific attention 

is given to a particular track, it 

should be “Faust, Midas, And 

Myself,” that asks, “What direction?” 

That’s a question we 

all are constantly asking ourselves. 

At times the lyrics teeter on 

repetitious, but Switchfoot’s 

sound competes with that of 

a young U2 and brings you 

out of any monotony you may 

acquire for a split second with 

the sharp guitar riffs and melodic-yet-masculine 

vocals on 

the ballad-style tracks. 

Guitarist and keyboardist 

Jerome Fontamillas occasionally 

catches you unexpectedly 

with a few notes on his ivories. 

It’s an interesting addition, 

used in moderation, that keeps the sound fresh 

and exciting. 

The arrangements on the album are professional, 

and it’s obvious that this band knows 

what it’s doing. The album keeps the listener 

— old and new — in mind, never gets boring 

and leaves you wanting to shout along with lead 

singer Jon Foreman. 

Having been around since 1996, it would be 

an injustice to compare Switchfoot to any other 

rock bands that are new and in the mainstream. 

Switchfoot is a hidden gem that deserves airplay 

and even an iTunes purchase. Heck, do that and 

catch them this Saturday at Maverick Stadium.

Minds behind ‘Shaun of the Dead’ 

attack the buddy-cop genre

Okay, here’s the deal with 

Hot Fuzz: 

If you saw Shaun of the 

Dead, the 2004 zombie farce 

from the Hot Fuzz team, you 

will laugh your ass off. 

But if you’ve yet to see 

Shaun of the Dead, you’ll 

sit motionless for about half 

the film as everyone around 

you laughs hysterically, like 

I did. Because apparently, 

everyone else got the big picture 

that I missed. 

It’s around the halfway 

point that Hot Fuzz avoids 

becoming another Napoleon 

Dynamite, a movie that people 

think is either hilarious 

or pointless. Director

Edgar Wright set out to do 

for buddy-cop movies what 

Shaun of the Dead did for 

zombie flicks, and as the 

movie winds down, that becomes 

much more evident 

and funny. 

After the picture was 

screened at the recent AFI 

Dallas International Film 

Festival, Wright said he and 

star Simon Pegg watched 

hours upon hours of movies 

like Bad Boys II and Point 

Break and hoped to finally 

make British policemen look 

as cool as the Americans. 

With stupid law officers, 

brutal murders and often 

corny dialogue, it’s safe to 

say they achieved their objective. 

After the silly setup, 

character introductions 

and first few gruesome killings, 

Hot Fuzz almost pointfor-point 

reenacts infamous 

scenes from past action 

movies. It even gave clueless 

watchers ample background, 

like with one particular reference 

to Point Break. 

As far as the killings go, 

they are quite animated, but 

the squeamish should be 

prepared to turn their heads 

at times. 

So Shaun of the Dead 

fans, go ahead and see Pegg 

and Nick Frost chase geese 

like you were already planning 

to. Others should take 

heed, but honestly, the last 

40 minutes or so are worth 

the ticket price alone.

Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick 

Frost, the team behind the cult classic 

Shaun of the Dead, have returned to 

put a U.K. spin on buddy-cop movies. 

Director Wright and acting duo Pegg 

and Frost were in Dallas during the inaugural 

AFI Dallas International Film 

Festival. 

They answered questions from the 

public after Hot Fuzz was screened 

and attended a press roundtable the 

next day with The Shorthorn and local 

media. 

The Shorthorn: Why the delay in releasing 

the film here in the states? (Hot Fuzz 

premiered this past Valentine’s Day in the 

U.K. and Ireland.) 

Simon Pegg: Well, the distributors analyzed 

it, and we didn’t want it to come out 

here against 300. We felt like we were kind 

of going for the same audiences and just 

thought it was a battle we wouldn’t win. 

TS: Simon, in Shaun of the Dead, you’re 

pretty much a slacker-type. Here, you’re 

this sort of hero. Was that switch intentional, 

and was it challenging?
