AnaJet mPower Launched
Last August, AnaJet launched the mPower, our new high-capacity, high-performance
direct to garment printer at The NBM Show in Long Beach, California. We have since
launched the printer into our international markets beginning with FESPA Singapore,
and this February we will debut it at FESPA Digital in Barcelona, Spain.
We developed (and are now shipping) two models: the mPower mP5, which has
three stainless steel print heads, and the mPower mP10, which has six. “Both mPower
printers use specially-engineered industrialstrength
print heads to increase production
speed, significantly reduce clogging, and
eliminate costly maintenance cycles,” said Don
Rasmussen, co-founder and Director of Engineering
at AnaJet, Inc. “As a result, users can
rapidly print one-off designs for market testing
or reel off hundreds of units in a day, with little
or no downtime during the workday.”
AnaJet created the mPower line to support businesses in the screen printing, embroidery,
promotional product distribution, document and offset printing, and sign
making industries. “mPower offers a compelling value proposition to these businesses,”
said Greg Nathanson, President of AnaJet, Inc. “No other garment printer
manufacturer can offer the combination of speed, production readiness, durability
and customer support, at this price point.”
The mPower’s industrial-strength print heads tolerate high-pressure cleaning,
which means less manual maintenance and downtime for cleaning. In addition, the
advanced closed-loop ink delivery system enables ink recirculation for all channels.
That means less clogging, less maintenance and more precision printing. All AnaJet
printers are made in the USA with internationally sourced components, and they use
environmentally friendly water-based inks. Continued on Page 4
ISSUE 1 - SPRING 2012
Jason Bryan of IHS Printing adds an
mPower to his shop for a total of
4 AnaJet printers
Jason Bryan started IHS Printing two and a half years ago in Fountain Valley, CA. IHS
Printing was originally strictly a screen printing shop, but six months after opening,
Jason started look-
“The mP10 has improved productivity
tenfold, so much that we had to buy more
heat presses just to keep up with it.”
SPRINT, Jason sold all of his screen printing equipment and
focused entirely on direct-to-garment business.
Business grew so much for IHS Printing that Jason
bought two more SPRINTS within a year of selling his
screen printing equipment. When the mPower was
released, Jason bought an mP10 as well and now
operates all four printers in his shop.
Jason says “the mP10 has improved productivity
Feature Article
Landau Princeton Surpasses $250,000
Revenue from One AnaJet SPRINT
In early December, AnaJet paid a visit to Landau
Princeton, a privately-owned clothing shop right
across Nassau Street from Princeton University.
They have been in business for over 97 years, selling
fine woolen clothing and outerwear and branded
university apparel. In particular, they are famous to
the point of being acknowledged by the president of
Iceland as “the woolen family.”
The owners, Henry and Jake Landau, are a father
and son team. Like many AnaJet
customers, they used
to outsource all
printed clothing
to screen
printers. They
first saw
the AnaJet
SPRINT
at a trade
show and
they were
hooked on
the idea of
leaping forward
into digital
direct to garment.
Three months later,
they bought a SPRINT
and began learning how to
use it based on the manual
and with a little handholding
from technical support.
Henry tells how productive the AnaJet printer
has been. “We have had the SPRINT now for 17
months. It is the only piece of production equipment
that we have in this store. We meticulously track the
products that are generated with a dedicated set of
SKUs. Because we have to track our output for licensing
purposes, we generate a report every month that
shows the volume of output. Last month (November)
we generated $13,000 worth of product on this
printer.”
What’s the total gross sales from the one AnaJet
printer? “We’ve documented over $250,000 of sales.
It took us approximately five months to achieve
return on investment. We feel so strongly about this
machine that we say, “It prints money.””
They attribute their runaway success to one overwhelming
differentiator. “AnaJet’s technical support
team has been a partner in our business ever since
we received the machine. We never attended AnaJet
University, so there was a learning curve for us as far
as setup, maintenance and dialing in settings, but
today we are comfortable operating it and positioning
the printer right on the shop floor, in full view
of our customers next to the cash register. We know
several tech staff by name, and if we ever have an issue,
they stick with us until it’s resolved. We’ve never
experienced the sense of being “handed off,” so we
really feel that AnaJet has a stake in our success.
You couldn’t pay us to replace this machine with a
competitor’s printer.”
Why do you feature the AnaJet printer so prominently?
Jake explains. “We stage it in the open and post
our unit and volume pricing right on the side of the
machine because it drives sales! When people see it
working, they discover that we can print virtually any
image onto a shirt. They walk out of the store and
then come back with a thumb drive, and we process
and print the file on the spot.”
Henry adds, “Sometimes they stop in on their way
to the campus, then visit the university store to
compare prices. They always come back here to
buy because we can price competitively and
we’re never out of stock on any item, and
we can do it without losing margin.”
Do you still use screen printing?
“We still have lines that we send to
screen printers because
the graphics
are so simple.
However, I
often pick
up business
that screen
printers say
“no” to, because
I can
offer short
runs and faster
turnaround. If
someone comes
to me with a request
for 200 shirts in two days,
and they want to personalize
one element on each, I know I can
fulfill it and no one can touch us. That’s
thousands of dollars in business. And I have total
confidence, even before I start the job, that I’ll get a
hefty margin from it.”
Any advice for similar stores? Henry suggests that
any off-campus clothing store needs to make the
investment in an AnaJet printer. “It’s easy to use and
if you carry a range of product lines, it gets people
through the door. So it can indirectly drive sales
across everything. The AnaJet printer has allowed
us to develop a reputation on campus as the most
responsive custom clothing printer in town. Almost
every club uses us.”
“It took us approximately
five months to achieve ROI...
It prints money!”
Thanks Henry and Jake for your time and congratulations
on your success. We’ll follow up shortly with
an extended video testimonial so you can see video
plus photos of the storefront and interior, as well as
Landau’s price list. AnaJet will also exhibit again at
Technical Tips & Tricks Resources
Tech Tip: Metal Foil Prints
The process of metal foil printing is another way to
decorate your garment with direct-to-garment printers.
Give your customers the shiny look of metal foil;
the process is quite simple and not much different
than printing a dark garment.
Written by Applications Manager Paul Green, who
developed metal foil prints for AnaJet, this quick
start guide will get you going with metal foil printing
in no time!
Metal Foil Prints
Metal foil can be purchased from AnaJet’s online
store or by calling AnaJet’s customer service department.
The following steps will provide you with
a fantastic looking and wash-fast print. The same
process is used for both light and dark garments.
1. Graphic Setup- The first step is making sure you
have the right style of graphic. Graphics that are line
art or lettering are best suited for this application.
It is basically just a one color print. Metal foil has a
transparency to it so the color behind it will have a
drastic effect on your final print. The rule of thumb
is to make your graphic as close to the same color
as the foil you are printing. For this application we
will be using gold foil so you will want to make the
graphic a golden yellow.
2. Print Settings- The amount of ink used on your
print when using foil is very important. A small
amount of white under base is used with a heavy
color pass. The settings you will want to use in EK
Print Studio are as follows:
White Ink Settings: Medium ink drop size, Level 1.
Content Base should not be selected in order to get
a uniform solid white. The Choke setting should be
low 5-6 with contrast slider at zero.
Color Ink Settings; Drop size should be set to heavy.
Level should be 4 and the color mode set at Standard
(SPRINT) or (Graphics) FP-125.
3. Curing with Foil- Once you have printed your
solid image onto the garment, immediately take it
to the heat press. Have a foil square cut out just a
little bigger than your image and place it foil side up
on top of the print. Place a new sheet of parchment
paper on top of everything, wrinkles in parchment
paper will show in the foil. Now press your shirt with
a medium pressure at AnaJet‘s recommend dark
shirt temperature (330 degrees for 90 seconds).
4. Removing Foil- After the heat press is finished
curing, you must let the garment cool down; this
should take around 30 seconds and the foil should
be cool to the touch. Grab the corners of the foil on
one side and peel off slowly and evenly. The foil will
stick to areas where ink is and you will now be
looking at an amazing print.
information. m
Paul Green Featured in December 2011 Printwear
Our own applications manager, Paul Green, has
a feature article in this month’s Printwear! Paul’s
article, “Direct-to-Sampling Programs,” discusses how
screenprinters and other garment decorators can
use a direct to garment machine to
take quotes for jobs
one step further by
providing customers
with samples on
the spot.
“Think about handing out a t-shirt like a business
card. Potential customers will have a product inhand
with all your information and, when it comes
time get some shirts printed, that’s going to leave an
impression.”
Paul also relates the story of a customer who, seeking
to drum up some business, hit every pub within
30 miles, added their logo to a St. Patrick’s Day
themed shirt, and dropped off one-off samples for
each. 80% of the samples resulted in business.
