<strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Fauziah</strong> <strong>Rabbani</strong>, MBBS (Karachi), MPH (USA), FCPS (Community Medicine) from College of<br />

Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan, FRCP (Edin) and PhD (Health Systems Research) from Karolinska<br />

Institutet Sweden is a Professor at the Dept of Community Health Sciences (CHS) Aga Khan<br />

University Karachi (AKU-K). She is the recipient of Pakistan Academy of Medical Sciences Gold<br />

Medal Award and Commonwealth Award of Excellence for Good Practices in Women’s Health in<br />

connection with Urban Health Program (UHP) of AKU. UHP was awarded MacJannet prize for<br />

Global Citizenship in 2009 for its exceptional university civic engagement by the Talloires Network<br />

and the MacJannet Foundation and also enjoys recognition from the World Health Organization<br />

(WHO) in the form of UNISOL (Universities in Solidarity for the Health of Disadvantaged) initiative<br />

for which <strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Rabbani</strong> was the Principal Investigator (www.who.int/mipfiles/2362/UNISOL.pdf).<br />

Acting as a WHO consultant she designed and delivered a week’s course at Cairo, Egypt on Health<br />

Systems Research for members of all EMRO countries. Besides being nominated as a scholar and<br />

receiving Faculty Development Award at AKU, <strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Rabbani</strong> has also received a scholarship from<br />

Dept of Education & Research, Swedish Insitute (Si). She was awarded a year’s sabbatical in 2005<br />

from AKU to work at the Dept. of Public Health Sciences Karolinska Institutet (KI) Sweden in<br />

collaboration with Professor Goran Tomson (www.phs.ki.se/ihcar/hsp/staff/rabbani.html).<br />

<strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Rabbani</strong> has been acting chair CHS, January –December 2004 and is the interim chair since<br />

January 2009 to date. Previously she has headed Health Systems Division and MSc Health Policy<br />

Management program at AKU. CHS comprises of approximately 40 FTE faculty and 170 staff. The<br />

department plays a pivotal role in undergraduate MBBS and graduate teaching and is approved by<br />

College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan for four years residency in Community Medicine. <strong>Dr</strong>.<br />

<strong>Rabbani</strong> is working towards curriculum development of PhD in Health Sciences. Currently CHS has<br />

responsibility of executing several intramural and 23 extramural grants along with collaborative<br />

academic linkages within and outside AKU.<br />

<strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Rabbani</strong> is a member of International Association of University Women (AAUW), Technical<br />

Expert Network (TEN), Swedish South Asian Network (SASNET), Asia Pacific Network of Social<br />

Sciences and Medicine (APNET), Towards Unity for Health (TUFH), WHO Network of Community-<br />

Oriented Educational Institutions, Health and Development Research Network, MRC, South Africa,<br />

Population Association of Pakistan (PAP), Pakistan Public Health Network (PPHN) and is on the<br />

panel of experts, Pakistan Medical Research Council (PMRC).<br />

Her scholarly work consists of obtaining grants (WHO-EMRO, WHO-UNISOL, AKU- University<br />

Research Council , and Swedish South Asian Network --SASNET to mention a few), presenting<br />

papers in international and national conferences by invitation, and serving in national & international<br />

forae (e.g. WHO) as technical advisor. <strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Rabbani</strong> is leading the Swedish South Asian Network on<br />

Health Administration Research and Training in collaboration with IHCAR, Dept of Public Health<br />

CHS is one of the largest university departments with approximately 40 FTE faculty and 170<br />

staff. It has various structurally organized units/divisions contributing to education, research<br />

and service. These are Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Health Systems, Environment and<br />

Occupational Health, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Reproductive and Population Health<br />

and Community Health. Besides coordination of regional short courses through its Continuing<br />

Education Program (CEP) and undergraduate MBBS education (UGME), CHS has prime<br />

responsibility of approximately 70 students enrolled in MSc Epidemiology and Biostatistics,<br />

MSc Health Policy and Management, Masters in Clinical Research and four year residency<br />

program in Community Medicine approved by CPSP Karachi. CHS executes several AKU<br />

URC funded and 23 internationally funded research grants. The department has<br />

several collaborative academic linkages within and outside AKU. Majority of them<br />

are large population-based studies and community based trials.<br />

Head Health Systems Division (HSD), AKU Karachi, Pakistan (2002 to2004; 2006- 2008)<br />

This division aims to develop relevant, effective, equitable and sustainable health services<br />

delivery models in disadvantaged urban and rural communities with particular emphasis on<br />

primary health care. HSD is taking the lead in the graduate programs (MSc Health Policy &<br />

Management and MSc Hospital Administration) and is the focus of funded community-based<br />

research and development in CHS. Support for Community Health Nursing is based in this<br />

division. The division comprises of 12 full time faculty, 50 staff and many visiting, part-time<br />

and honorary lecturers.<br />

Supported by core AKU funds for community oriented teaching, this is the largest project<br />

within HSD with components of service delivery, teaching and research. The project caters to<br />

a population of approximately 100,000. UHP was the recipient of “Common Wealth Award<br />

of Excellence on Good Practices in Women’s Health” in 1997 -1998 and one of the 12<br />

selected sites in 2001 around the world for the WHO-UNESCO sponsored UNISOL<br />

(Universities in Solidarity for the Health of the Disadvantaged) project. UNISOL aimed to<br />

mobilize the widest possible spectrum of talents within participating universities to further the<br />

well being and health of the disadvantaged. UHP was also awarded the MacJannet prize for<br />
