egional Italy
Lombardia – our regional focus
Located in the Northwest of Italy Lombardia is a focal point for us at Ormeggio as we look to introduce food and wine that’s specific to this region.
Lombardia has a diverse landscape with an abundance of beautiful lakes, mountainous alpine forests and intensively cultivated plains.
The climate is generally cool continental though can vary widely with its unique terrain.
Its capital city Milan is Italy’s fashion and financial centre.
Currently Lombardia has 3 DOCG, 15 DOC and 13 IGT Designations.
SOMMELIER – SCOTT BENVAU

a glimpse at Nebbiolo in Italy
Nebbiolo is one of the great wine varieties of the world and is known to have been grown as early as the 14 th century in the Piedmont Region. It is thought to derive its name from the Piedmontese word nebbia which means “fog”.
A difficult, late ripening variety that requires plenty of exposure to sunshine, careful site selection and real excellence in the vineyard to obtain quality results.
Nebbiolo is certainly not made to be an instantly ready to drink style. Wines made from this variety have substantially high tannin and acid levels that can often make them hard to approach in their youth.
That said, given sufficient time these wines emerge into incredible, complex, unique and haunting expressions that can live on for decades.
In some ways Nebbiolo can be a very difficult wine to categorise as they can take on a lighter, more floral, pinot-like 'pretty' style, while others can be dark, thick, alcoholic, tannic and very powerful.
With understanding, this variety can be one of the most easy to recognise in the glass for its unique perfumes and brick-orange tinge that develops around the rim.
In some instances Nebbiolo is referred to as 'Pinot Noir on steroids' and without doubt these two varieties share some real similarities that cross over at different points but are certainly not one and the same.
In general, good Nebbiolo displays striking aromatics such as roses and tar, a strong tannic backbone (that will soften with age), all types of herbs, flowers and spices such as liquorice, violets,
pepper, tea, leather, and many forms of cherries and dark fruits.
Great Nebbiolo, like great Pinot Noir, has a certain 'something' that is mysterious and alluring.
Nebbiolo is found predominately in the northwest Italian region of Piedmont where it forms the base of many of the region’s most well known
DOC and DOCG wines including Barolo, Barbaresco, Gattinara, Ghemme and Alba.
Outside of Piedmont, it can also be found in the regions of Lombardia and Valle D’Aosta.
Nebbiolo from the Lombardy region by zone
Terraze Retiche di Sondrio IGT, 2009 Mamete Prevostini 'Botonero', $64
Valtellina Superiore DOCG
Valtellina is a valley located in the province of Sondrio and is Lombardy's most northern wine zone. Surrounded by high alpine mountains Valtellina is carved out of the slopes that descend to the Adda river.
Nebbiolo or Chivianesca as its known by the locals has been grown for centuries here and makes some of the regions very finest reds.
Grapes for 'Superiore' DOCG wines can only be sourced from vineyards surrounding 5 of Valtellinas sub zones - Marrogia, Grumello, Inferno, Valgella and Sassella.
A further 2 years of ageing is required before release.
These Nebbiolos often display a solid structure with floral/cherry fruit, tea, spices, savoury tannins and subtle acidity.
2008 Mamete Prevostini 'Sassella', $94
2005 Alberto Marsetti 'Le Prudenze' $135
Sforzato di Valtellina
Unique to the zone of Valtellina the designation of 'Sforzato' indicates the wine has been made with Nebbiolo grapes that have been laid out to dry for around 100 to 110 days.
Seen as the region’s signature wine these are finely crafted examples that sit on top of the quality pyramid and retain high prices.
As the grapes dry out - the sugar levels rise, acidity levels decrease, liquid reduces (grapes lose around 40% of their weight) and unique flavour profiles develop.
These wines have immense density, power and complexity.
2006 Nino Negri 'Sfursat' $150
2006 Alberto Marsetti $195
2007 Nino Negri '5 stelle' $210
