I. PURPOSE<br />
INSTRUMENTATION SYMBOLS AND IDENTIFICATION<br />
This Job Specification provides criteria for the uniform <strong>and</strong> consistent<br />
presentation of Instrument <strong>and</strong> Control Symbology <strong>and</strong> <strong>Identification</strong> on P&ID’s for<br />
the ECOPETROL Barrancabermeja Refinery Modernization Project (PMRB) -<br />
Barracabermeja, Colombia.<br />
II. SCOPE<br />
<strong>Instrumentation</strong> <strong>Symbols</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Identification</strong> shall be in accordance with the<br />
St<strong>and</strong>ard ANSI/ISA-5.1-2009 <strong>and</strong> the additional definitions, statements,<br />
requirements <strong>and</strong> exceptions described in the following sections of this Job<br />
Specification. These additional definitions, statements <strong>and</strong> requirements detail<br />
<strong>and</strong> describe the selected numbering scheme, graphic symbol, <strong>and</strong> other choices<br />
required by ANSI/ISA-5.1-2009.<br />
This Specification covers the generation of new P&IDs. It also applies to P&ID’s<br />
provided by packaged equipment suppliers <strong>and</strong> to tagging conventions used in the<br />
instrument database.<br />
This document provides design guidelines for the P&ID symbol <strong>and</strong> identification<br />
conventions associated with Instrumented Control Systems including the tagging<br />
used for identifying hard & soft tags.<br />
This document also provides several typical P&ID representations of the symbols<br />
as linked to field sensing devices, motor <strong>and</strong> valve controls. The intention of<br />
this document is to clarify how to represent <strong>Instrumentation</strong> symbols on P&IDs,<br />
not to provide all details how to implement the control systems.<br />

ANSI/ISA-5.1-2009 <strong>Instrumentation</strong> <strong>Symbols</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Identification</strong>.<br />
“must” or “shall” A m<strong>and</strong>atory requirement for which exceptions will<br />
not normally be granted.<br />
“should” A preferred course of action for which exceptions<br />
will be granted for a superior course of action.<br />
“may” An acceptable course of action for which exceptions<br />
will be granted for equal or better course of<br />
action.<br />
<strong>Instrumentation</strong> Process measurement, monitoring, controlling, <strong>and</strong><br />
interlocking devices <strong>and</strong> equipment.<br />
Instrument System A collection of instrumentation that is specifically<br />
designed <strong>and</strong> configured to perform a unique<br />
function, such as, distributed control, safety<br />
instrumented systems, process stream analysis, etc.<br />
Owner ECOPETROL or its designated representative (EPC<br />
Contractor, Contractor, in the sense of prime<br />
contractor)<br />
EPC CONTRACTOR Engineering, Procurement <strong>and</strong> Construction<br />
Contractor. FPJV or its designated representative.<br />
Fail Closed (FC) The characteristic of an automated valve that<br />
results in the valve closing as a result of specific<br />
malfunctions, including loss of signal or motive<br />
power (Reference ISA S5.1.).<br />
Fail Indeterminate (FI) The characteristic of an automated valve that<br />
results in the valve moving to an unknown position<br />
as a result of specific malfunctions, including loss<br />
of signal or motive power. Some automated valves<br />
will not stay at the last position upon failure <strong>and</strong><br />
will instead move with the process differential<br />
pressure. Additional equipment may be needed to meet<br />
the definition of FC, FO or FL. (Reference ISA<br />
S5.1.).<br />
Fail Locked (FL) Last Position: The characteristic of an automated<br />
valve that results in the valve remaining in the

last (locked) position as a result of specific<br />
malfunctions, including loss of signal or motive<br />
power. Automated valves may fail indeterminate<br />
without additional equipment. (Reference ISA S5.1.).<br />
Fail Open (FO) The characteristic of an automated valve that<br />
results in the valve opening as a result of specific<br />
malfunctions, including loss of signal or motive<br />
power (Reference ISA S5.1.).<br />
H<strong>and</strong> Switch (HS) Any operator manipulated discrete control device,<br />
including hardwired panel switches <strong>and</strong> software<br />
points.<br />
Interlock A system that, in response to a predetermined<br />
condition, initiates a predefined action. Typically<br />
comprised of binary (on - off) signals <strong>and</strong> logic<br />
used for process control, sequencing or protective<br />
interruption of normal process control functions.<br />
Protective interlocks are typically further defined<br />
as being either safety related or commercial (asset<br />
or production protection) related.<br />
Logic solver The control equipment that performs the logic<br />
function. It can be either hardwired (e.g., relays)<br />
or Programmable Electronic Systems (e.g., DCS or PLC<br />
based, including dual or triple redundant<br />
microprocessors).<br />
Loop Number A number that identifies a related collection, or<br />
group, of instrument devices <strong>and</strong> control functions.<br />
Piping & <strong>Instrumentation</strong><br />
Diagram (P&ID)<br />
A detailed graphical representation of a process<br />
including the hardware <strong>and</strong> software (e.g. piping,<br />
equipment, instrumentation) necessary to design,<br />
construct <strong>and</strong> operate the facility. Common synonyms<br />
for P&ID's include EFD's (Engineering Flow<br />
Diagrams), UFD's (Utility Flow Diagrams) <strong>and</strong> MFD's<br />
(Mechanical Flow Diagrams).<br />

V. GENERAL<br />
INSTRUMENTATION SYMBOLS AND IDENTIFICATION<br />
A. Instruments shall be identified (tagged) by a system of letters <strong>and</strong> numbers<br />
generally in accordance with the ANSI/ISA-5.1-2009 <strong>and</strong> the additional<br />
definitions, statements, requirements <strong>and</strong> exceptions described in the<br />
following paragraphs.<br />
B. Each instrument, device or component in the project shall have a unique alphanumeric<br />
tag number using the following style:<br />

Functional <strong>Identification</strong> (max 5 letter left justified)<br />
C. The Functional <strong>Identification</strong> will use a system of letters to classify the<br />
instrument, device or component functionality <strong>and</strong> will use up to five (5)<br />
letters left justified (see section VI). The Unit Identifier defines the unit<br />
with which the instrument/ device/ component/ loop or system is associated.<br />
The consecutive number will establish a loop identity for the instrument, in<br />
general, will be common to other instruments, devices or components of the<br />
loop of which is a part. The Loop <strong>and</strong> Instrument number suffixes are sometimes<br />
added to complete the instrument identification (Based on ANSI/ISA-5.1-2009<br />
Annex A).<br />
D. The Loop Number Suffix may be added to a Loop Number to identify identical<br />
loops on identical equipment in the same processing unit when the service or<br />
equipment is assigned the same equipment identification number with a suffix,<br />
such as reactors, heat exchangers, <strong>and</strong> pumps. The Loop Suffix shall be one<br />
letter <strong>and</strong> shall be located after the numeric component of the tag number.<br />
E. The Tag Number Suffix shall be one letter <strong>and</strong> shall be located after the loop<br />
number suffix if it is used or after the numeric component of the tag number<br />
if the loop number suffix is not used. The tag number suffix may be added to<br />
Instrument Tag Numbers in the loop to designate two or more similar devices or<br />
functions:<br />
1. Case 1 – in different services, such as control valves that direct flow to<br />
different places or auxiliary devices, such as those that perform different<br />
functions.

2. Case 2 – in the same service, such as control valves that direct flow to<br />
the same place or auxiliary devices, such as those that perform the same<br />
function.<br />
F. For the new Units, the Unit identifier will be a two digit number as shown in<br />
the table V.2 <strong>and</strong> the consecutive number will be a three-digit number between<br />
001 <strong>and</strong> 999.<br />
G. For existing Units, the unit number will be a two-digit number. For process<br />
areas with similar Unit Number (i.e. U-200 <strong>and</strong> U-2000), a leading zero shall<br />
be included as part of the unit identifier. The consecutive number will be a<br />
three-digit number limited by the numerical sequence of the similar unit<br />
number: i.e. for process areas U-200 <strong>and</strong> U-250, the consecutive number will be<br />
between 000 <strong>and</strong> 499 for unit U-200 <strong>and</strong> will be between 500 <strong>and</strong> 999 for unit U-<br />
250. In this case, the numeric component of the tag number (UU NNN) shall be<br />
provided by the Owner. See examples below:<br />

I. Where ANSI/ISA-5.1-2009 offers alternate methods of presentation, the project<br />
practice is to use the method requiring the fewest symbols. <strong>Symbols</strong> will not<br />
be shown for the following:<br />
1. Valve positioners. Valve positioners will not be part of the Instrument<br />
Index. They shall be identified <strong>and</strong> included in the instrument database <strong>and</strong><br />
P&ID’s only if they are provided as st<strong>and</strong>alone instruments or if they need<br />
to be installed distantly from the related final element.<br />
2. Balloons identifying flow primary elements. Flow primary elements will be<br />
part of the Instrument Index.<br />
3. Local process variable indicators on transmitter outputs, unless it is<br />
intended to designate a special location for the indicator, as shown by a<br />
note next to the tagging balloon.<br />
4. Square root extraction signal conditioning. Unless noted otherwise on the<br />
P&IDs, square root extraction of head meter type flow instrumentation is<br />
assumed to be performed in the transmitter.<br />
J. Transmitters with integral indicators shall be identified with letters (FT,<br />
PT, LT, TT, AT).<br />
K. Control Valves shall be identified with letters (FV, PV, LV, TV, etc). New<br />
positioners for existing valves shall be added to the instrument database<br />
under the same valve tag with a comment “ Existing Valve – New Positioner”<br />
L. I/P Converters <strong>and</strong> Electro-pneumatic positioners shall be identified with<br />
letters FY, PY, LY, TY, <strong>and</strong> AY <strong>and</strong> shall be included in the instrument<br />
database <strong>and</strong> P&ID’s only if they are provided as st<strong>and</strong>alone instruments or if<br />
they need to be installed distantly from the related final element.<br />
M. If it is required to use multiplexers or wireless transmitters, they shall be<br />
identified on P&ID <strong>and</strong> included in the instrument database. See examples 1 <strong>and</strong><br />
2 below:

N. Functional identification of an instrument shall be made according to its<br />
function <strong>and</strong> shall not be based on its construction. Thus a differential<br />
pressure transmitter used for flow measurement shall be tagged as “FT” or a<br />
pressure transmitter on an atmospheric tank to measure its level shall be<br />
tagged as “LT” <strong>and</strong> so on.<br />
O. The numeric component of Tag Numbers may be duplicated within the same unit<br />
area (e.g. FT -63001 <strong>and</strong> LT -63001 have a different first letter but have<br />
the same numeric component, 63001).<br />
VI. FUNCTIONAL IDENTIFICATION<br />
A. The functional identification of an Instrument shall be a system of letters<br />
generally in accordance with the ANSI/ISA-5.1-2009, extracts from which<br />
follow. Minor modifications have been made.<br />

B. The functional identification of an instrument will consist of letters from<br />
Table VI.1, <strong>and</strong> will include one first-letter, covering the measured or<br />
initiating variable ([L]=Level, [F]=Flow, [P]=Pressure, etc.) <strong>and</strong> the<br />
succeeding letter covering the functions of the individual instrument<br />
([T]=Transmitter, [C]=Controller, [I]=Indicator, etc.). Additional letters can<br />
be included as modifiers of the first of succeeding letter previously<br />
mentioned. Modifiers shall be consistently used wherever applicable. Use<br />
maximum five (5) letters as functional identification.<br />
C. The modifiers [R]=Run / [S]=Stop <strong>and</strong> [C]=Close / [O]=Open for the succeeding<br />
letters shall be used for the Run/Stop <strong>and</strong> Close/Open signals rather than<br />
suffixes (e.g. the Run/Stop push button shall be tagged as HSR -82001 <strong>and</strong> HSS<br />
-82001 instead of HS -82001A <strong>and</strong> HS -82001B).<br />
D. Control Signal to auxiliary electrical devices like motors interposing relays,<br />
shall use [Y] rather than [M] or [X] as first-letter (e.g. YY -82001 instead<br />
of XY -82001).<br />
E. Auxiliary devices like solenoid valves shall be tagged based upon their<br />
initiating loop <strong>and</strong> not upon their output loop.<br />
F. All Control Functions shall include the modifier [I] (e.g. FIC -82001 instead<br />
of FC -82001).<br />
G. Safety valve, pressure relief valve, safety relief valve, vacuum relief valve<br />
<strong>and</strong> thermal relief valve shall use the functional identification [PSV]. An<br />
<strong>Identification</strong> / Tag Number Suffix could be added to <strong>Identification</strong> / Tag<br />
Numbers of these valves in case of a multiple relief valve system scenario.<br />
H. The Deviation Alarm is an alarm generated when the difference between two<br />
analog values exceeds a limit (e.g., deviation between primary <strong>and</strong> redundant<br />
instruments or a deviation between process variable <strong>and</strong> setpoint). The general<br />
deviation alarm between redundant transmitters shall use the functional<br />
identification [*AD*], i.e. the high deviation alarm for the transmitters PT<br />
-82501A, PT -82501B <strong>and</strong> PT -82501C shall be PADH -82501.<br />
I. The Motor Operated Valves for the Offsite Area (U-7100) <strong>and</strong> the existing units<br />
could be identified [MOV] to keep consistency with the existing tag naming<br />
convention in the ECOPETROL Barrancabermeja Refinery.<br />
J. The Tank Gauging System <strong>and</strong> Motor Operated Valve host stations could use the<br />

K. The Level Transmitter part of a Tank Gauging System shall use the functional<br />
identification [UT] instead of [LT]. This level transmitter usually gets<br />

1. A user's choice letter is intended to cover unlisted meanings that will be<br />
used repetitively in a particular project. If used, the letter may have one<br />
meaning as a first-letter <strong>and</strong> another meaning as a succeeding-letter. The<br />
meanings need be defined only once in a legend, or otherwise, for that<br />
project.<br />
2. The unclassified letter [X] is intended to cover unlisted meanings that will<br />
be used only once or to a limited extent. If used, the letter may have any<br />
number of meanings as a first-letter <strong>and</strong> may have any number of meanings as a<br />
succeeding-letter. Except for its use with distinctive symbols, it is<br />
expected that the meanings will be defined outside a tagging balloon on a<br />
P&ID. For example, XR -00002 may be a stress recorder, XR -00003 may be a<br />
vibration recorder, <strong>and</strong> XX -00004 may be a stress oscilloscope.<br />
3. First-letter [A] for analysis covers all analyses that are not listed in Table<br />
2 <strong>and</strong> are not covered by a user's choice letter. It is expected that the type<br />
of analysis in each instance will be defined outside a tagging balloon on a<br />
P&ID.<br />
4. A pilot light that is part of an instrument loop shall be designated by a<br />
first-letter followed by succeeding-letter [L]. For example, a pilot light<br />
that indicates an expired time period may be tagged [KL]. However, if it is<br />
desired to tag a pilot light that is not part of a formal instrument loop, the<br />
pilot light may be designated in the same way. Except motor status lights<br />
which shall be not tagged [XL], regardless of the contact source. See note 2<br />
above. Status lights for valves shall be tagged [ZLO] for the open position<br />
<strong>and</strong> followed by [ZLC] for the closed position.

C. A Loop Number Suffix may be added to a Loop Number to identify identical loops<br />
on identical equipment in the same processing unit when the service or<br />
equipment is assigned the same equipment identification number with a suffix,<br />
such as reactors, heat exchangers, <strong>and</strong> pumps. The Loop Suffix shall be one<br />
letter <strong>and</strong> shall be located after the numeric component of the Loop<br />
<strong>Identification</strong> Number.<br />
D. Because of the critical nature of the safety relief devices, [PS] is<br />
considered as Measured/ Initiating Variables in the Loop <strong>Identification</strong><br />
Number.<br />
A. It is not the intention of this st<strong>and</strong>ard to list all symbols or combinations.<br />
ANSI/ISA-5.1-2009 lists many more. <strong>Symbols</strong> not specifically depicted in the<br />
Job Specification <strong>123939</strong>-<strong>60A3</strong> shall be based on ANSI/ISA-5.1-2009.<br />
<strong>Instrumentation</strong> Symbology <strong>and</strong> details are also shown on the attached Legends<br />
<strong>and</strong> <strong>Symbols</strong> drawings in Attachment C.<br />
B. Control valve positioners <strong>and</strong> control valve electric-to-air converters will be<br />
shown. (Reference ANSI/ISA-5.1-2009 Table 5.4.3 drawings 2 <strong>and</strong> 5). These<br />
devices may be identified on P&ID’s just in the cases specified in the<br />
paragraph V.I.1 in this document.<br />
C. In addition, various notations may be used on individual symbols. For<br />
example, the letter "V" just outside the circle can indicate an item supplied<br />
by a package vendor, or the letters "LP" can indicate a local panel mounting.

right of an instrument balloon as follow: (V) <strong>and</strong> (LP).<br />
D. The actuator action (FO, FL, FC) in the event of actuating medium failure<br />
shall be shown on the P&ID’s, close to the control valves. (Based on<br />
ANSI/ISA-5.1-2009 Table 5.4.4 Method A).<br />
E. Most of instruments balloons used for tagging shall be solid line on P&ID's.<br />
These instruments may be repeated on auxiliary flow diagrams (AFD's), in<br />
phantom to provide a clear functional underst<strong>and</strong>ing. If it is required to show<br />
the same balloon in two different P&ID’s, just one of them shall be shown with<br />
solid line <strong>and</strong> the other ones shall be shown with dash lines.<br />
F. An arrow head shall be used when required to clarify the direction of the<br />
signal for all line types. It shall be shown at the end of the line where it<br />
enters a device.<br />
G. All alarm/trip values (i.e. temperature, flow, pressure, etc.) shall NOT be<br />
shown on P&IDs but shall be provided as part of the instrument database.<br />
H. The circle within a square shall represent the Primary shared-display, sharedcontrol<br />
system devices or functions. If the system is other than the<br />
primary DCS device or function, it can be identified as notation outside of<br />
the bubble; such as PLC-1.<br />
I. The rotated square within a square shall represent the Safety Instrumented<br />
System devices or system. If the system is other than the primary SIS device<br />
or function, it can be identified as notation outside of the bubble, such as<br />
BMS-1.<br />
J. The type of elements for temperature primary elements <strong>and</strong> level transmitter<br />
shall be identified on the EFD according to the instrument measurement<br />
notation table in the attachment B on this Job Specification.<br />
