Estacada Area Community Events had its first float in the
Portland Rose Festival Starlight parade in 2011, promoting the
Estacada 4 th of July and the first ever USLMRA (United States Lawn
Mower Racing Association) Pacific Open.
Fundraisers included Comedy Nights and Golf Tournaments. The
Mini Bang Open was The Saturday of every Fatherʼs Day Weekend
and the Glow-Bang was in the early fall.
The Golf Tournaments had an enthusiastic pool of
competitors each year. Every event required a team
entry fee, which included a meal and prizes for teams
who placed 1 st , 2 nd and 3 rd . Other prizes included
individual awards for Longest Drive, Closest to the Pin
and more. There were also Hole-In-One prizes
available for any lucky amateur golfer who could hit it.
Unfortunately, no one has. Regardless, golfers always
had a blast, rain or shine.

Setting up the first Mow Bang: USMLRA Pacific Open:
" During the late summer of 2010, EACE board members were
brainstorming ideas that would bring more of a crowd to Big
Bang other than the main attraction. Dan Skoog mentioned lawn
mower racing. It was something different and every member
knew the Portland area wasnʼt very familiar with it.
" Skoog combed the internet, wrote emails, made phone calls
and soon after, EACE was sharing dialogue with the United
States Lawn Mower Racing Association officials. This was the
conception of Mow Bang!
"
" On July 1st, 2011, Drew Carneyʼs KGW News Chanel 8 Out and About morning
segment featured Estacadaʼs 1st annual United States Lawn Mower Racing Association
Pacific Open, which is part of a National Points Race for the USLMRA.
" While Out and About runs between 5-7am, Carney and his crew must arrive on site much
earlier to set up equipment, participate in any briefings and other preparations necessary for
the segment. Big Bang and USLMRA volunteers were at the Mow Bang Raceway extra early to
readily greet Mr. Carney.
" The weather was unusual for that part of the summer. Volunteers and racers could be
seen donning multiple layers and/or coats and sipping hot beverages during those pre-dawn
hours.
" Upon his arrival, Carney was just as energetic as he is seen on the air and he was eager
to acquaint himself with USLMRA President, Bruce Kaufman, who started the organization
twenty years ago and Dan Skoog, the man who spear-headed the Pacific Open.
" Carney resembled a kid at a theme park while he was prepped to race and his youthful
excitement was contagious. Everyone had loads of fun watching him. He will return for another
Out and About on July 3rd this year.
" Footage of his segment can be viewed from the link below or at www.estacada4thofjuly.com in the “Lawn
Mower Races” section.
Ready, Set, MOW!!!
" Estacada saw itʼs first United States Lawn Mower Racing Association event with the Mow Bang US Pacific
Open on July 2 nd and 3 rd 2011, which was a National Points race as well as a format open to race mowing competitors
outside of the USLMRA.
" The event drew racers, spectators and USLMRA officials from several states, including President and Founder
of the association, Bruce Kaufman from Northbrook, Illinois and Vice-President, Kerry Evans from Wilmer, Alabama.
" The Pacific Open was the first USLMRA event in Oregon and has only been preceded in the Pacific Northwest
by the Skagit County Fair in Mt. Vernon, Washington in 1998.
" Dan Skoog, Chairman of Estacada Area Community Events, decided to gather a few community members to
discuss integration of Lawn Mower Racing into Estacadaʼs Big Bang 4 th of July weekend. The idea sparked excitement
across the community and beyond. Businesses like, Reliance Connects, Buzzard Equipment and Dickʼs Logging
Supply donated equipment and supplies while Tom Schultz, Steve Stone and Mike and Dillon Mofford joined Skoog in
rallying volunteers to construct an official track, build race mowers, recruit other volunteers and racers as well as
communicate with USLMRA officials, making Estacadaʼs biggest annual tourist event go national.
" The president of the Pacific Coast Lawn Mower Racing association, Bud Elmore, traveled from Anza, California
to help EACE and the Estacada community establish an official race track of the USLMRA. He worked closely with
volunteers in meeting the proper specifications for construction of the track, which is modeled after NASCARʼs
computerized scoring system.
"
" On July 2 nd , 2011, Interval rocked Estacada using a unique blend of familiar elements like
Genesis and Rush.
" Michael "Dilly" D'Leora lead the group in vocals while alternating between his bass and
keyboard. Chris Rudolf was the guitarist. Chuck Mansfield
supported the rhythm section magnificently and delivered
a smashing drum solo. He has made past appearances at
Big Bang, drumming for Crazy Train in 2009 and 2010.
Estacada appreciates his contributions. Thank you so much,
Chuck!
Mansfield also arrived early to build a new drum riser and
appeared in the opener, Big Bang Jam Session with
Mr. “Mow” It All, Bruce Kaufman, the president of the United States
Lawn Mower Racing Association, who played the keyboard and
harmonica. They were joined by Estacada's Eric Bodreau, on bass, and
Eric Payne, on guitar.
" Tribella, the Tribal Fusion/Hip-Hop Belly Dance Troupe, gave a
seductive performance in the middle of the line-up.
" Hot Hoops Dance Collective, dazzled the crowd
during the sets of Interval on July 2nd, Splintered Throne and the Drum
Circle, on the 4 th , with their blazing props including poi,
juggling torches and fiery hula-hoops. Anyone who
didnʼt attend missed a real treat. They pulled off
amazing stunts.
" Sabrina Seybold and Joe Good spun hypnotic moves as they joined
together, weaving fiery circles around each other. Jill Schofield and Jay
Peace employed some amazing couple tricks as well. They really drew in
the crowd!
" Live Entertainment. Even the best
planned events have unexpected situation
and Big Bang 2011 was no exception. The
sound engineer, Aubrey Waters, USLMRA
racers, Aimee OʼBrien and other volunteers
combined brain power and worked together
to keep the festival going. Performers such
as Dan Richardson, Ken Johnson, members
of Truth Be Told, Splintered Throne (despite
not playing until the next day) all offered their
services outside of their scheduled stage
time.
Live entertainment has long been a part
of Estacadaʼs 4th of July celebration. Groups
have ranged in genre and some have
traveled at least 100 miles. All have been on
a Pro-Bono (volunteer) basis.
Some Portland area bands like Crazy
Train, Splintered Throne and Interval have
fallen in love with Big Bang. They have
provided more than performances by
supplying equipment for the stage and sound
system and more.
Splintered Throne returned to Estacada after
performing on July 2nd, of 2010. They always
deliver a crowd engaging performance.
The group plays “Splinterized” versions of
famous covers from artists like Kansas, The
Animals, Boston and classic metal favorites like
Judas Priest along with their own material.
The line-up in 2010 consisted of Jonathan
Schlosser (guitarist), Brian Bailey (bassist),
Yves Prince (drummer) and frontman, Brian
Garrison. Dan Bowers played drums in 2011,
but at Bowers' suggestion, Prince filled in for
"Ascension Denied," Prince's favorite song from
their album, "Deeper into the mind of a
musician."
Garrison and Bailey will return with Splintered
Throne's new line-up, which now includes two
guitarists Jason Moser and Danny Noe and
Estacada Resident, Kris Holboke, on drums.
They will conclude Big Bang 2012, along with
Estacada based bands in a night of rock music,
dubbed, Bangfest on July 6th.
Auditions at Estacada Music Emporium took
place in a battle of the bands style contest on
April 21st, where Brian Garrison and Kris
Holboke joined Paul Trubachik and Braden
Cooper as Panel Judges.
Special Thanks to Brian Garrison for
donating some of his personal speaker
equipment to give Big Bang Weekend
more volume. He rocks!
An Estacadian since his childhood, Dan Richardson has a long
history with the community. He and his brothers, Alan and Clee,
have had many gigs at fundraising events, weddings, class
reunions, etc.
Last year, Dan was an impressive one-man act alternating
between acoustic and electric guitar with pre-recorded tracks for
the rest of a full band sound. He performed country and classic
rock. Heʼll return to play on July 4th this year.
Hot Hoops Dance Collective & Some Drummers
! A drum “circle” was formed to accompany Hot
Hoops Dance Collectiveʼs third performance following
the main event, the Big Bang 2011 Fireworks Display.
" Volunteer hand drummers took turns by jumping
into an improvisational beat for the mega-blazing
dancers. Hand drumming volunteers included: Wayne
Lerch, Ben Allen, Yves Prince and Tom Cherry, who
also donated the use of his hand drums for the event.
Many thanks to the fantastic performers who volunteered their time to entertain Big Bang Fans!
Pyro Crew History
By Dan Skoog
When I moved to Estacada in 1972, I went to work for
a company that built logging roads. My job consisted of
falling, bucking and logging the timber, after which, the
stumps and rock needed clearing to prepare for
excavating and grading.
One of my favorite duties was drilling and shooting the
stumps and rock and blasting them with fertilizer and
dynamite. I would spend an entire day loading and
wiring a hillside of stumps or drilling rock and loading it
for the big blast at the end of the day, so every day was
the 4th of July, for me, back then.
My recollection begins in the early 1980s of annually
going to the Timber Park, having a tailgate party and
watching the fireworks. Although I had been to the Ft.
Vancouver shows in years past, I found the intimately
up-close display much more enjoyable added with the
benefit of less traffic and a shorter commute home from
Estacada versus Fort Vancouver.
The Pyro-crew, in the years I recall, included Jack
White, Wyman Schwartz, John Henry, Skip Blamer and
Dave Stockner. It was a simpler time with little
regulation.
Mortar sizes varied between three to twelve inches.
There was only one tube per size. Runners were
designated to specific mortar shell sizes to ensure the
sizes of shells and tubes matched. They would retrieve
the shells from stored “Ready Boxes” after each shell
was shot. The tube would be cleared of debris from the
previous mortar and then reloaded for the following
shot. A pyro, using a flare on a stick, moved down the
line to shoot the mortars from the reloaded tubes.
The “Grand Finale” was usually a huge 12 inch shell,
which the crowd took delight in watching from a mere
50 to 75 feet away and clear back to the tail-gate party.
Today, such a shell would require a minimum distance
of 1200 feet clearance from spectators.
Here is a timeline of the events since my involvement
with Estacadaʼs 4th of July:
1986
The “Estacada Family Fourth” was a growing event. I
was asked to help with the fireworks crew.
1988
I was the guy with the flare on a stick. Nancy and Steve
Walls were in charge of the “Family Fourth” and had the
events incredibly organized. The timber park was
running out of room. That year, the smaller fireworks
were set off from a remote corner of the Timber Park
while larger shells were shot from across the river.
1990
The event was big and new laws were in effect for
crowd distance. For the first time, all fireworks had to
be shot from across the river. This was also the first
year the entire fireworks show was preloaded and
timed in advance.
1993
The Oregon State Fire Marshall required every
fireworks show to have a licensed pyro-technician,
which was called an “Ariel Display Operator.” Dusty
Bollenbaugh and I were tested and became certified.
This was also a turning point year since Kay Nelson
could not find enough volunteers to man the sales
booths for the smaller fireworks community members
could purchase. Those booths were a major source of
income to fund the event, so Bill James and I went
around asking businesses for help and money was
collected. The show went on without any special events
in the Timber Park, like in the old days, with coolers
and tailgate parties.
1994
The Chamber of Commerce took over the 4th of July
event. At this time, the main source of revenue from
sales at the fireworks booths was whittled away by
other organizations setting up their own stands in town.
Several years ago, the Chamber gave up on the booths
due to volunteer burn out and very little revenue on the
account of competition. Subsequently, they tried to
raise the main source of revenue in other ways.
2004
The fireworks relocated to the North of the High School
because of the Timber Park being restructured and no
longer capable of hosting a fireworks show. Benefits
from this move comprised of: crowds coming into town,
which helped local businesses; there has been more
room for more vendors and thousands of more people
and more distance for bigger mortar-shells (fireworks).
Drawbacks included: searing heat with no shade for the
pyro-crew; no river for the pyro-crew to cool off in and a
great camping spot for the crew was lost. We really
have to make it up to the members of our fireworks
crew, some of whom take a week or more of vacation
to donate their time--ITʼS NO LONGER A ONE DAY
EVENT FOR THE CREW, LIKE IN THE OLD DAYS.
Setting up and installing everything takes several days.
Plus another full day is needed for cleaning up the site
and returning the tubes.
Currently, fireworks permits need approval from the
following entities: The County Sheriff; The Fire
Department; The Oregon State Fire Marshall and
Homeland Security. Pyros must be re-certified/licensed
every three years. Background checks are conducted
and finger prints are taken by the ATF. We must attend
classes once each year for updates on rules and
regulations as well as new products produced by
Western Display Fireworks and the Oregon State Fire
Marshall.
Stringent requirements include: A one million dollar
liability insurance policy and workersʼ compensation
insurance for the fireworks display. Report forms from
the OSFM and ATF must also be filled out and turned in
after the show. There is always PAPERWORK,
PAPERWORK, PAPERWORK!
We also exceed the requirement of one license pyro by
four. Our licensed pyros are: Rocky Skoog, Wayne
Lerch, Nickie Hoffman, Tim Hoffman and Kurt
Zieglemeyer. For good measure, we have an available
attorney, or two, along with the rest of the help.
The logistics, services, wages and equipment for a
show like this to be successful would cost at least 50
thousand dollars and up to 100 thousand in todayʼs
environment. If it were not for all of the volunteers,
sponsors and donations, this event wouldnʼt be
possible. The generosity of such contributions coming
from the community and beyond is why this show is
such a big hit. So remember to thank our volunteers and
benefactors.
Big Bang is a positive and newsworthy event, which draws thousands of people from all over. Businesses reap the benefit from
the increased traffic, making Estacadaʼs Independence Day celebration a very valuable investment of time, money and energy
provided by several dedicated community members whom take a lot of pride in the year-round work to ensure its success.
Volunteers spend hundreds of hours planning, coordinating, doing general labor, putting on various fundraisers and solicit
many generous donations to pull off an event of this magnitude. The total cost for the 2012 event is estimated to be $75,000 and
would be much higher without all of the volunteers and benefactors from the community and beyond.
" Saturday, April 21 at the ʻBattle of the Bandsʼ
This family friendly event was used to help raise money for the 2012 Big Bang. Beginning at 4pm bands competed at the
" Vendors: Estacada Area Events is now accepting vendor applications from those wanting to join the fun and have their
business represented. Vendors range from various concession booths, non-profit groups, souvenirs and more.
" Lawn Mower racing: Estacada Area Community Events and Mount Hood Lawn Mower Racing (MHLMR) have great
plans in place for the 2012 race season. Bleachers, an improved sound system and other spectator enhancements are in the
works. Monthly USLMRA sanctioned regional races and MHLMR club races are also in the 2012 plans.
Estacada's Mow Bang Raceway is now a nationally recognized premier race track. A larger USLMRA U.S. Pacific Coast Open
decades. She cooked all of the meals
for the Pyro crew before businesses
donated food for in kind sponsorship.
She now uses her very much needed
money smarts and bookkeeping skills
to keep EACE running smoothly.
Alan Hull- Estacada Fire District: Wayne Lerch- Individual: Head- Angie Long- Bank of The West:
Director.
Pyro/Director.
Co-Treasurer/Director:
Angie assists Treasurer, Bev
Skoog, with EACEʼs financial
matters. Every penny donated
and used must be securely
tracked and documented. She
was also in charge of
recruiting and scheduling Gate
Admission and Parking
volunteers.
Before 2005, Estacadaʼs Chamber of Commerce
ran the entire Estacada 4 th of July Celebration, but
the project is so big and time consuming,
community members saw a need to form a nonprofit
organization specifically for the Estacada 4 th
of July Festival and Sky Show. This was the birth of
what is now known as EACE and its titled event,
Big Bang! EACE was formed by: Cheryl Armstrong,
Becky Arnold, Tim Arnold, Joanna Harbour, Donald
Homan, Lisa Homan, Bev Skoog, Dan Skoog,
Steve Stone and Clinton Vinning
Aimee OʼBrien- Country Financial:
Vice President/Director.
Aimee ran the comedy
fundraisers, helped structure
the sponsor committee and
contributed valuable marketing
skills. During Big Bang, she
was a savvy improvisor while
contributing as Master of
Ceremony.
Sandy Richards- Individual:
Vendor Coordinator/Director.
Sandy joined EACE filling the
role of Vendor Coordinator.
She did a dynamite job of
booking vendors, assigning
their locations and making
sure every requirement
between EACE and the
vendors were squared away.
of July volunteer, along with
her family, for many years.
After a few years on Pyro-
Crew, she joined EACE and
replaced former Entertainment
Director, Eric Bodreau in 2011
for recruiting and booking live
entertainment.
Tom joined the board in 2011
and quickly became of great
value to EACE in helping to
establish the USLMRA
sanctioned Mow Bang
Raceway. He dedicated many
hours to recruiting, track
building and other
involvements with Mow Bang.
