With a combined global
audience of four billion
people expected to tune
in to the Olympic Games from
27th July – 12th August there is
ample opportunity for your
church and community to get
involved, says Tim Friend,
Diocesan Sport Ambassador.
“Locals are most likely to attend
a gathering centred around the
Opening Ceremony – though
‘Super Saturday’ (4th August)
will be popular,” said Tim.
He suggests screening key events
for your community – adding
food, bunting and games to create
a party or cafe atmosphere. A
regular TV licence is required and
technical information is available
online. Sports quizzes, multimedia
quizzes, with dinner and a
talk is another option for family,
friends and neighbours which is
fun, informal and competitive.
Tim has plenty of tips and might
be available for your event - and
there is also a free resource on
DVD produced by Christians in
Sport.
“There are an abundance of
Olympic themed materials for
children and young people.
Assemblies, holiday clubs and
church groups are well catered for
–and provide DVD testimonies of
athletes, for example Scripture
Union and Barnabas in Schools,
plus a compilation of sporty
games and activities.
“High quality short interviews of
athletes highlighting their sport
and faith are ideal to introduce to
regular Alpha sessions or other
events. There will be 10 of these
available soon – just go to the
link on the Ministry of Sport
resource page.” said Tim.
Mini-Mags offer a guide to the
Games with stories of sport and
faith and can be given away free
at your event, obtainable at a bulk
price of 45p per copy from More
than Gold, and Sporty Gospels
have also been produced.
“Don’t forget if you’re short of
sporty Christians to help deliver
your event, get in touch with me
JULY 2012
Get involved in 2012
Olympic ideas for your church and community
and I can put the word out around
the diocese,” added Tim. “And
one final point to remember – you
can’t use the Olympic rings as
logos on your publicity. Ministry
of Sport has a selection of logos
you might like to use instead.”
The Church History Project was set up in 1998 by the Diocese of
Southwell & Nottingham in conjunction with the University of
Nottingham to provide an accurate historical and archaeological
record for each church and church site within the Diocese. The recent
award of a Heritage Lottery Grant has enabled this work to expand
into both education and tourism. To view the research go to
Thank you from
former Registrar
Canon Chris Hodson, former
Diocesan Registrar, expressed
his gratitude to the parishes for
their contribution towards the
gift for his retirement in March
of this year.
Chris said: “I am most grateful
to and wish to thank most
sincerely the parishes of the
diocese for their generosity in
the donations that have been
made to my retirement gift from
the diocese. The amount
received was amazingly
generous and will be put to good
use in the new house to which
Jenny and I have moved.
My years, first as Deputy
Registrar, and then as Diocesan
Registrar, were most rewarding
in the work that I was able to do
and the friendships and
acquaintances that I made over
the years. I know that I shall
miss it and the wonderful people
I had the privilege to meet but I
am certain that my Successor.
Amanda Redgate, will serve the
diocese and its people well. I
hope that everyone will extend to
her the kindness and courtesy
that I found in this marvellous
Diocese of Southwell and
Nottingham. Once again, my
most grateful thanks.”

Government
agrees £30 million
extra to resolve
VAT concerns
The Church of England has
welcomed an agreement
with the Government over
the future funding of alterations
and repairs to its 12,500 listed
buildings, which will provide
£30 million a year extra money.
This is on top of the £12 million
already in the Listed Places of
Worship Grant Scheme
(LPWGS).
Church leaders have said that the
£30 million a year extra money
that the Chancellor has
committed to the LPWGS will
enable the equivalent to the VAT
bill to be paid out on all
alterations and repairs to listed
church buildings. The Scheme
pays out to those denominations
and faiths with listed buildings.
The LPWGS will in future be
ring-fenced and no longer
vulnerable to cuts in
departmental budgets and it is
planned to re-introduce monthly
pay outs from October. The
scheme will be guaranteed for
the duration of this Parliament.
Parishes have shown they need a
much greater degree of certainty
in the funding they receive and
this will now be met by ironing
out some of the more unhelpful
characteristics of the current
LPWGS.
Further details and explanation
can be found at the LPWGS
website
Southwell Minster Art Exhibition
Two local artists will be
exhibiting their abstract
paintings at the Minster in
July and August. Whilst David
Crouch’s most recent work is
characterised by feeling or
experience, contact with place or
people, David Ainley’s are of
landscapes, though not in the
conventional sense.
David Crouch: Still Life, Falling, Detail.
2011
Mixed media is favoured by David Crouch – often on large canvases.
“The feeling is important, rather than any ‘objective’ characterisation
of typicality,” he said. “Bodily features and the materiality and felt
juxtaposition of space sometimes merge in the process of painting;
abstracting from rather than abstract.” One work in particular, ‘Walk’
has moved him towards further abstraction.
“In recent years I found that my emerging forms sometimes become
more reduced; simpler shapes of lines, wavering blocks, gentle
agitation and part suggesting smears of colour; loose ovals and
irregular sensuous forms became part-suggestion and part-holding
back, part pushing further.”
His recent exhibitions include the Tarpey Gallery, Castle Donington
and the Richard Attenborough Centre Gallery in Leicester.
David Ainley has had many solo shows since his acclaimed exhibition
at Ikon Gallery, Birmingham in 1966, including the New Court
Gallery in Repton last year and the Wallner Gallery at the Lakeside
Arts Centre in 2010.
He draws inspiration from places that have histories of mineral
extraction, like lead and tin mining, and quarrying areas. The apparent
simplicity of his images invite quiet contemplation, slowly revealing
the painstaking processes of their production involving multiple layers
of monochrome worked in a manner that echoes the slow progress of
miners whose picks cut through rocks by only a few inches a day.
Intended actions and chance discoveries....resonate with
characteristics of prospecting and winning ores in mining and are
testament and metaphor to aspects of labouring that are rarely
addressed in contemporary paintings of landscape....
An exhibition of the work of both artists will be launched at Friday
Lunchtime at the Cathedral on 6th July at 12.15pm and run until
14th August.
Famous medieval
service book
returned to
Wollaton church
in virtual form
A rare medieval service book is
being unveiled in ‘virtual form’
in the Nottingham parish church
where it was used during the
fifteenth and early sixteenth
centuries.
The famous Wollaton Antiphonal
was made for Sir Thomas
Chaworth, the richest man in
Nottinghamshire, in about 1430.
It is a large and beautifully
illustrated manuscript full of
medieval liturgy and choral
music and was used in St
Leonard’s Church in Wollaton,
Nottingham which acquired it
after his death.
The Antiphonal has been in the
care of The University of
Nottingham’s Department of
Manuscripts and Special
Collections to ensure its
preservation but now, thanks to
modern technology, a virtual
version is being returned to the
church so that everyone can
enjoy the sounds and sights of
this historic treasure.
An interactive computer
application called Turning the
Pages has been used to transfer
digital images of the Antiphonal
and some of the chants sung by
the choir of St Leonard’s, to a
kiosk which can be used by the
public to explore the sights and
sounds of the medieval service
book.

8 July 12
Link Officer, The Revd Barbara
Holbrook writes:
From time to time, people
and groups wish to give
money to support the work
of the Diocese of Natal in the
community. In the last month, we
have sent across all the money
recently donated to work with
children and with HIV/AIDS to
be used in the above project.
Mphophomeni was established as
a suburb in 1964 for migrant
black labourers wanting to work
at the construction of Midmar
Dam and at SARMCOL (South
African Rubber Manufacturing
Company Ltd). The Parish of
Mphophomeni was established in
1965 and at the time they
worshipped in Howick at St
Mary’s.
The Group Areas Act resulted in
the forceful relocation of parish
worship to Mphophomeni in
1972. Subsequent growth resulted
in an application to the
Department of Bantu Affairs to
build a church. In 1976
permission was granted to build
and a site was allocated. In 1977
the Diocesan Lenten Appeal was
directed to the parish for purposes
of funding the church. The church
was consecrated in 1981.
Mpophomeni housed most of the
workers at SARMCOL in Howick
Natal News & Information
www.southwell.anglican.org Compiled for Nifty Notes
Building of a crèche in Mphophomeni
and in 1985 a massive strike was
called to protest low wages. All
were summarily dismissed
resulting in poverty, anger and
resentment. The strike was in part
due to rivalry between two
political parties. The ensuing
violence resulted in
Mphophomeni becoming the first
major township area for conflict
in the Natal Midlands in the
1980’s. Reconciliation between
the rival factions only started in
1993/94.
Mphophomeni is 14 km from
Howick and has approximately
45,000 residents. Unemployment
is high and many homes are
child- headed families due to the
prevalence of HIV/Aids.
The Church of the Good
Shepherd houses between 50-80
children in its vestry area daily to
accommodate the growing
demand for child care. The vestry
was not designed with crèche
facilities in mind; toilets are
currently not easily accessible
and there is no kitchen for food
preparation. The sleeping area is a
concrete floor.
Building a new crèche stands to
cost in the region of R570 000
excluding professional fees.
The proposed plan consists of a 3
bedroom crèche with kitchen,
storeroom, boys and girl toilets at
the rear of the church property.
The remaining ground between
the crèche and the church will be
used as a play area. It affords
relative safety from the main
street which is at the front of the
church and does allow for access
by parents from the side as well.
A covered veranda allows for any
inclement weather. The toilets
will be easily accessible as
opposed to walking around the
building at present all the way to
the back. A small kitchen will
promote hygiene and food
preparation. The classrooms
allow for either play area or
sleeping rooms and allow greater
teacher control over the children.
Thank you to all those who gave
money. Please keep this project in
your prayers over the coming
months.

Learning Community Taster Day St John’s College,
A Learning Community is a two year process which consists of four
3-day gatherings. Each gathering covers a different theme:
• Building a Discipleship Culture
• Multiplying Missional Leaders
• Launching Missional Communities
• Establishing Centres of Mission
At each gathering teams reflect on their church situation, listen to
