A FEW WORDS
OF WELCOME
Greetings to the World Equestrian
Games 2010 in Kentucky
With the World Equestrian Games in
the US American Lexington, the idea
of joint World Championships in all
equestrian disciplines of the International
Equestrian Federation (FEI)
celebrates its 20th anniversary. This
year, the venue is outside of Europe
for the first time. A proof that the
World Equestrian Games have truly
emancipated as a global event. I am
particularly glad that for the first time
in history, Para-Equestrian Dressage
will be included in the 2010 Alltech
FEI World Equestrian Games in Kentucky.
For the German Olympic Committee
for Equestrian Sports and the German
Equestrian Federation the World
Equestrian Games in Lexington represent
one of the biggest organizational
and logistic challenges in its long history.
Never before so many horses
and people had to be transported
over such a distance and needed to
be taken care of in a way that secures
they can compete under ideal conditions.
I sincerely thank the staff and all
volunteers who put so much energy
in achieving this big goal. The same
thanks go to the numerous sponsors
and patrons whose valuable contribution
is indispensable for the success
of German athletes and horses in Lexington.
Last but not least I wish to
express my gratitude to the German
horse breeders, because not only
the majority of our athletes but also
a large number of competitors from
other countries participate with their
wonderful German Horses.
I wish all German competitors the
best possible results. At the same
time we should not forget that the
most important goals in all disciplines
are the welfare of our partners, the
horses, and a fair attitude towards
them and our contenders. May the
accompanying team behind the team,
the officials and the numerous German
supporters enjoy exciting, happy
and unforgettable days in Kentucky.
world‘s best and we are very pleased
to sponsor such a successful
team”, explained Martin Richenhagen,
AGCO Chairman, President
and Chief Executive Officer.
The 2010 World Equestrian Games
Endurance and Para-Equestrian.
The sponsor commitment of the
Fendt brand will help the German
Equestrian Federation for Equestrian
Sports (FN) and the German
Olympic Committee (DOKR) to
face the financial and organizational
challenges of the competition.
”Fendt is the leading high-tech
brand for tractors and the German
equestrian team leads in international
competitions – that’s a perfect
match”, explained Martin Richenhagen.
AGCO’s Fendt brand manufactures
tractors and agricultural equipment
in three German factories. As
the main sponsor the Fendt brand
will finance parts of the equipment
Among other things, the Fendt
logo will be visible on the German
team’s equipment and apparel. The
Chef d‘Equipe of the German team,
Reinhard Wendt, explained: „We are
very pleased to have such an attractive
main sponsor as Fendt and we
will do our best to successfully represent
Germany during the 2010
World Equestrian Games.“
DRESSAGE
Dressage, an Olympic
discipline, is one of
the most successful
sports in German equestrianism.
The aim of every form of
equestrian training is the development
of harmony between rider and
horse; dressage is more than just
the execution and presentation of
movements and figures. The tests
are aimed at training the horse gymnastically
and to develop it correctly.
Through training, the rider obtains a
horse who reacts submissively to
the aids – the rider’s weight, legs
and reins. A correctly-trained horse
is the best possible basis for safety
in equestrianism. Dressage also
increases the performance capabilities
of the horse. It serves, ultimately,
to maintain the horse’s health
since, through correct training, the
strength of the horse will be built
up and its joints will be made more
flexible. No matter which equestrian
discipline one specialises in,
without dressage it is impossible. It
is the basis for all other equestrian
activities: for the happy hacker, who
rides up and down hills with a balanced
seat; for the endurance rider,
who needs to ensure the health of
his horse so that it can cover 100mile
rides in natural balance whilst
conserving energy; and for the show
jumper, who can only get through
all the turns in a course and cover
the distances between jumps with
a well-ridden, gymnasticised horse
with a sound dressage training.
Competitive sport in Germany is divided
into the following classes: E
(Preliminary/Training Level), A (Novice/First
Level), L (Elementary-Medium/Second
Level), M (Advanced
Medium/Third Level) and S (Advanced/Fourth
Level). The most difficult
classes are the top dressage tests
(Grand Prix & Grand Prix Special)
which are ridden at European and
World Championships as well as at
the Olympic Games. These tests,
which are drawn up by the International
Equestrian Federation (FEI), are
ridden in a 20 x 60 arena and consist
of approximately 35 movements,
which must be memorised.
Dressage tests consist of a certain
number of movements which follow
a specific order or, in a Freestyle,
can be carried out in a freely-chosen
order to a musical composition. The
horse moves in the basic paces of
walk, trot and canter on straight or
curved lines, forwards, sideways or
even backwards. At the higher levels
of dressage, more difficult movements
are introduced (collected
and extended paces, half-passes,
passage, piaffe, pirouettes, flying
changes, and so forth).
The tests are evaluated by a group
of three or five judges, all placed
in different positions, which form
a jury, judging on a scale which
ranges from zero points (‘not executed’)
to ten points (‘excellent’) for
each movement. The impulsion and
the quality of the paces, the horse’s
looseness (relaxation and suppleness),
throughness and submission,
as well as the rider’s seat and effectiveness
in the use of the aids are
all evaluated. Marks are deducted
in the event of tests not being rid-
den correctly. The guidebook to the
tests explains what is required of
the rider and the horse in each dressage
test.
DRIvING
Driving is booming in
Germany and, whether
it be as a hobby or
competitively, an increasingly
high number of horse
lovers have turned to this discipline
in recent years. Singles, pairs, fourin-hand,
tandem, random, horses or
ponies – anything goes. In the competitive
sport there are dressage
tests, cross-country marathons, obstacle
cone courses as well as the
combination of all three. The combined
classes are valid for both the
individual and the combined classification,
which differs from normal
eventing, where there is only one
‘overall’ placing. In dressage, the
gymnasticity of the horse and the
evaluation of the level of training
are the priorities. In the obstacle
course through a course of cones,
accuracy, speed, obedience and
submission are the key elements.
The showpiece of any driving competition
is the marathon with its
spectacular obstacles.
Dressage
In the dressage test, the gymnasticity
of the horse and the evaluation
of the level of training are the priorities.
Here, a specific dressage test
is carried out in a 40 x 100 arena.
The judges will be marking, in addition
to the actual execution of the
test, the correctness of the clothing
and of the traditionally-made carriage,
including its suitability to the
horse. The dressage test consists of
figures and movements which can
be found in ridden dressage tests,
including transitions and flying
changes. The dressage movements
are scored on a scale of 0 to 10,
including sub-divisions into tenths.
A score of 5.0 must be obtained to
qualify for the subsequent phases,
which are, usually, an obstacle cone
course and the cross country marathon.
Marathon
A course divided into five sections
which usually covers approximately
20 kilometres is driven. During
each section, a specific pace or a
time (with both a minimum and a
maximum time) is to be observed.
The final section has eight obstacles
which are to be negotiated as
quickly as possible. The obstacle
course can be covered in canter.
Sports clothing is worn and a marathon
carriage is usually attached.
The grooms, sitting at the rear of the
carriages, stabilise them through
corners by shifting their weight and
they will often tell the drivers which
line to follow and which way to pass
through the obstacles by calling loudly.
Obstacle cone driving
This phase is executed through
a course of pairs of cones, with
balls balanced on top of each cone.
Speed, accuracy, obedience and
submission of the horses are tested.
Depending on the difficulty of
the test, there can be up to 20 pairs
of cones, placed between 20 - 50 cm
wider than the wheels of the carriage.
The pairs of cones are to be
passed through as quickly as possible
without the cone being moved
or the ball, which is perched atop
each cone, being dislodged. The
pairs of cones are identifiable by a
number, with the right cone having a
red number and the left cone displaying
a white number. Anybody who
misses out a pair of cones or passes
through from the wrong side is disqualified.
The scoring follows two
different methods. The first begins
by counting first the faults and then
the time so the winner is the one
with the lowest number of penalty
points; if there is a draw, then the
quickest time determines the winner.
Each obstacle which is knocked
down counts as five penalty points.
The second method of scoring adds
five seconds to the eventual time for
each penalty and the quickest competitor
is declared the winner.
ENDURANCE
Endurance is all about
covering a prescribed
distance as quickly
as possible. Veterinarians
examine the horses’ health
at so-called ‘vet gates’ (veterinary
checkpoints) and again at the conclusion
of the ride, checking the
horses’ pulse, soundness and overall
health. The horses may only
continue the ride if the pulse values
correspond to prescribed targets. A
horse who is not sound or who is
presenting metabolism problems
will be deemed unfit to continue the
competition by the vets. Therefore,
simply crossing the finishing line
does not imply that the race is over.
The horse must be presented for a
vet check within a certain time and
only if the heart rate, the soundness
and the overall health of the horse
are satisfactory the race is actually
over. Therefore, the winner is not
necessarily the first over the line.
The top distance in this ‘marathon
on horseback’ is 100 miles (160 km).
Horse and rider cover the 100-mile
distance within a day. However, it
is a long way to go to reach that level.
Beginners in endurance riding
start with short, introductory rides.
These are distances of between 25
and 40 km. Furthermore, there are
taster courses where one can learn
the basics of this enduring discipline.
Short-distance rides refer to
distances of between 41 and 60 km.
Then there are medium-distance
rides (61 - 80 km) and long-distance
rides (81 - 160 km). There are also
multiple-day rides in which distances
of 60 - 100 km are covered
over two or more days.
EQUESTRIAN EXPERTS WEAR CAVALLO

EvENTING
Three-Day Eventing, an
Olympic discipline since
1912, is the ‘multiple
competition’ of the
equestrian disciplines. An eventing
competition consists of dressage,
cross country and jumping phases.
The official international term for
eventing is Concours Complet (CC).
Dressage is ridden individually and
is always the opening event of an
eventing competition. It is judged in
the same way as a standard dressage
test; however, the final result
is converted into penalties. This
forms the basis for the subsequent
scoring.
Traditionally, the second phase
of an eventing competition is the
cross country over natural obstacles
of varying forms on a cross country
course. The course is to be completed
within a certain time; exceeding
this time results in time faults.
Penalty points are also given for
refusals or ‘dangerous riding’. Horse
or rider falls result in elimination.
The jumping phase, which is usually
preceded by a veterinary check
testing the condition of the horses,
follows the common rules of jumping.
Here too, penalty points are
accumulated for knockdowns, falls
and refusals as well as for exceeding
the allocated time. The overall
winner is the combination with the
fewest penalties.
Since eventing is one all-round competition,
the three phases are not
as demanding as the individual disciplines,
but an overall better condition
of the rider and the horse is
required. The typical eventing horse
not only has to have three good basic
paces, but it must also have a
good jump and good gallop.
JUMPING
Jumping is a relatively
young equestrian discipline
at the Olympics
and owes its origin to
fox-hunting. The first ‘competitive
jumping’ over one or several artificial
jumps started in 1900; soon
after, Italy’s Federico Caprilli revolutionised
the sport with his development
of the ‘forward seat’. Jumping
has been an Olympic discipline since
1912. The international term for a
jumping event is Concours de Saut
d‘Obstacles (CS).
The object of the discipline is to
complete a course of jumps without
knocking any down as quickly as
possible. Jumping is characterised
by rapidity, technique and courage.
It is an extremely popular sport in
Germany, being a discipline in which
the country has enjoyed extraordinary
success. The specific test in
jumping is to ride a horse to the
jump in such a way that the animal
can produce an optimal flight over
the obstacle. The rider needs plen-
ty of skill, balance, sense of rhythm
and accuracy in the use of the aids
to ride the horse over the jumps
successfully. Jumping classes are
offered, both nationally and internationally,
on a scale of E (for beginners)
to S (advanced) with up to five
stars, with the stars determining the
difficulty of each class (S* is easier
than S**).
Classes are ridden over a course
of jumps. In individual and team
competitions, they can be carried
out over several rounds and, if necessary
– if two or more combinations
have successfully completed
the course without any faults, i.e.
they had a ‘clear round’ – a jump-off
against the clock may be required
to determine the winner. The rider
with the lowest number of penalties
is the winner. The course consists,
at international competitions,
of approximately 15 jumps of up to
1.6 metres in height and 2 metres
in length. An open water jump of
up to 4.75 metres in length is also
one of the obstacles which must be
successfully negotiated. The length
of a course ranges from 600 to 700
metres. Faults are accumulated for
knockdowns, refusals, falls and for
exceeding the allocated time.
PARA-DRESSAGE
Para-Equestrianism
should not be confused
with horse therapy or
therapeutic riding. The
German Curatorship for Therapeutic
Riding (DKThR) e.V., which is an
auxiliary association of the German
Riding Federation (FN) e.V., cares
for and organises para-equestrian
sports. Special aids (such as, for
example, adapted saddles) make
riding accessible for people with
serious physical as well as mental
disabilities.
Disabled riders are classified in
five different grades from Ia to IV;
the allocation of the grade depends
on the severity of the disability and
therefore ensures a fair competition.
The Ia Grade is reserved for
the most severely impaired, while
Grade IV is for the least impaired.
Each grade has its own tests.
In 2006 Para-Equestrian joined the
ranks of the other seven disciplines
and became the eighth discipline of
the FEI. For the first time combined
World Championships will be held in
Kentucky. Therefore, equestrianism
is a role model and ground-breaker
for the integration of para-sports.
Grade I is reserved to the most
severely disabled riders. The athletes
are mostly wheelchair-bound,
either with a low balance or with
restricted arm or leg functionality.
Athletes with no balance, but with
good arm functionality are also permitted
to start in this category. Tests
are ridden in walk and trot; Grade I
is subdivided into Ia (only walk may
be ridden) and Ib (walk and trot are
permitted).
In Grade II, wheelchair-bound ri-
ders with severe impairment in
leg functionality and/or balance,
but with a good to lightly-impaired
arm functionality may participate.
Athletes without the movement
functionality of one limb are also
permitted to start in this category.
The test consists of walk and trot
sequences and, if desired, of certain
canter movements in the freestyle.
Grade III is the most highly represented
competitive class in Germany.
Athletes can generally walk
without support. They have disabilities
either in one limb, moderate
disabilities in both arms and both
legs, or severe impairments in the
arms. Athletes who are classified
as blind (B1) can also participate in
this class, as can those who have
had one leg amputated. The tests
consist of walk, trot and canter sequences.
The demands are similar
to those in Novice to Elementary
classes (First/Second Level) in ablebodied
sport.
In Grade Iv, riders participate in tests
similar to those up to Medium (Third
Level) dressage in able-bodied competitions.
Athletes have a disability
in only one or two limbs, or have
limitations in their vision. The tests
consist of walk, trot and canter
sequences whereas the Freestyle
can include most dressage movements
such as, for example, tempi
changes.
Much emphasis is placed on correct
riding, accuracy, the riders’ aids, the
suppleness of the horse etc. in judging
the performance of all of the
Grades.
In Freestyle, it is possible to show
dressage movements from higher
levels. However, there are certain
restrictions due to safety
reasons (for example, a Grade II rider
cannot ride a pirouette, while
half-passes are permitted).
In view of how the horse moves,
anybody can recognise and judge
the influence of the rider. One will
be surprised at how quickly and willingly
the horses become used to
their riders’ ‘alternative’ aids. The
horses are ridden with skill, never
force. After all, each rider, whether
able-bodied or disabled, knows his/
her own limitations, but has learned
to tell the horse what he/she wants.
REINING
Reining is a western riding
competition which
is ridden at a canter
(‘lope’) or gallop. It could
be considered the western equivalent
of dressage. The elements of
the test originate from the way working
horses were ridden on ranches,
although the competitive sport has
developed in a more ‘artificial’ way,
with the quick succession of fast
and slow circles, flying changes,
spins, sliding stops, rollbacks and
backups. These movements are repeated
in every test, but can appear
in a different order. There are ten
patterns which are included in the
rulebook. The technique of reining
recalls the origins of this sport. For
example, in most competitions the
rider rides with just one hand. What
is desired is a precise control of the
horse on a loose rein through the
subtle use of reins, legs, weight
and voice.
A good reining horse should be willing
and be controllable with few, invisible
aids. It must obey its rider fully.
Each individual movement must
be carried out under full control. Any
deviation from the precise pattern
means a lack or a temporary loss of
control and is therefore regarded as
a mistake which, depending on the
level of the deviation, is penalised
by a point deduction. As well as
point deductions for mistakes, there
are also point additions. These are
for smoothness, elegance, posture,
speed and the technique with which
each movement is executed. There
are different reining patterns whose
individual components must be carried
out in the prescribed order. The
patterns must be memorised.
vAULTING
Vaulting is a gymnastic
performance on a moving
horse. The collaboration
of the horse,
the longeur and the vaulter is the
basis for this equestrian discipline.
The longeur lunges the horse on
a circle and the vaulter performs
exercises on horseback, in harmony
with the movement of the horse.
There are team, individual and pairs
(pas-de-deux) competitions at national
and international level, right up
to the European and World Championships.
Team and individual competitions
consist of compulsory and
freestyle tests; in individual vaulting,
there is an additional technical
programme, while pairs is purely a
freestyle test.
A vaulting team for international
competitions consists of seven
vaulters, from which only six may
take part in the four-minute freestyle
test. Initially, the compulsory
exercises are performed by all
seven vaulters. Subsequently, a
freestyle is carried out twice, with
static and dynamic elements, in
which up to three vaulters are involved
simultaneously. Individual
vaulting consists of a compulsory
test and a one-minute freestyle with
static and dynamic individual exercises
as well as exercises from the
ground. This is followed by a oneminute
technical programme with
built-in predefined elements, as well
as an additional freestyle test. Pairs
vaulting consists of two two-minute
freestyle tests. The freestyle tests
are performed to music in a flowing
sequence of movements.
Vaulters need a variety of skills such
as coordination, feeling, balance,
agility and elasticity. Together with
an experienced longeur and a correctly
trained, suitable horse, a successful
unit can be formed.
THE GERMAN OLYMPIC COMMITTEE
FOR EQUESTRIAN SPORT
The German Olympic Committee for
Equestrian Sport (DOKR) is a member
association of the German Equestrian
Federation (FN) and is responsible
for promotion top performance
sport in Germany. In addition to the
three Olympic equestrian disciplines
of dressage, jumping and eventing,
the DOKR also supports the other
five FEI*-equestrian sport disciplines
of endurance riding, carriage driving,
reining, vaulting and Para equestrian.
The DOKR not only looks after the
top adult riders, but also the young
high-level riders in the three age categories
of young riders (aged 18 to
21), juniors (aged 16 to 18) and pony
riders (up to age 16).
In addition, the DOKR is in charge of
managing and coordinating the national
coaches. The national centre
for equestrian sporting excellence
in Warendorf (Bundesleistungszentrum
Reiten, BLZ) plays an important
role in the DOKR’s promotion of
high-level sport. Last year, it offered
110 courses and training events inhouse
and 50 courses out-of-house
which around 1.600 riders from all
disciplines, with nearly 2.500 horses
and ponies, participated. The national
centre is also responsible for
supporting and training the sports
school of the federal army in Warendorf.
* FEI=Fédération Equestre International
g Round about 1,240,000 men and
women in Germany (from the age
of 14 upwards) ride regularly. If one
adds boys and girls under the age
of 14, there is a total number of
1,600,000 to 1,700,000 riders, drivers
and vaulters in Germany. This
was revealed in a market research in
charge of the German FN in 2001.
g According to the same study, at
least about 870,000 persons in Germany
(from the age of 14 upwards)
would like to ride. Including boys
and girls under 14, this is a total
number of about 1,100,000 potenti-
al riders. 8,740,000 men and women
in Germany (from the age of 14 upwards)
have a general interest in
horses and equestrian sport.
Including the young people under
the age of 14, this is a total number
of nearly 11,000,000.
g There are more than 1,000,000
horses and ponies in Germany (60
million horses world wide). Thus the
horse population in Germany has
nearly quadrupled within the last 40
years.
EQUESTRIAN SPORT
IN GERMANY
Organized Equestrian Sport*
g 7,663 riding and driving clubs
have 748,839 members. With these
figures the German Equestrian Federation
(Fédération Equestre Nationale,
FN, founded 1905) the overall
national association of equestrian
sports, is the largest equestrian association
in the world.
g About 70 % of the FN members
(556,485) are female while the male
group is much smaller with only
192,354.
g The “Deutsche Reiterliche Vereinigung
e. V. (FN)” is the umbrella organisation
for horse sport and breeding
in Germany with 17 regional, 7
affiliated and 26 breeding organisations
who are member associations
of the FN.
g Directly affiliated to the FN are
also 3,888 commercial horse centres
and 57,900 personal members.
Competition Sport*
g 3,677 equestrian events with
69,425 competitions and 1,520,357
starts were run. 27,325,959 Euro
were paid in prize-money. Around
2,300,000 entries were registered
by the FN.
g The FN issued 84,654 annual riding
permits and 1,247 licences for
foreign riders competing in German
national events.
g The FN issued documents for
136,635 competition horses and
2,042 FEI passports for horses competing
internationally.
Successes*
g At Olympic Games (1912 to 2004)
German dressage, jumping and
eventing riders won 81 medals: 37
gold, 19 silver and 23 bronze medals.
g At World Championships (since
1953) in the seven** official equestrian
disciplines (Dressage, Jumping,
Eventing, Driving, Vaulting,
Endurance and Reining), German
riders, drivers and vaulters won 140
medals: 59 gold, 38 silver and 43
bronze medals.
g At European Championships in the
formerly** seven official equestrian
disciplines, including Youth Championships,
the number of medals
won by German riders, drivers and
vaulters amounts to 871: 370 gold,
281 silver, 220 bronze medals.
This record of results renders Germany
the most successful horse
sport nation of the world, and most
likely equestrian sport is the most
successful sports discipline in Germany.
Horses – The Economic Factor
g According to a scientific survey
nearly every 3rd horse creates one
job. According to this approximately
300,000 jobs are provided by sport
and hobby as well as the breeding
and keeping of horses in Germany.
Between 7,000 and 10,000 people
earn their living by giving riding lessons
and education of riders and
horses. About 3,000 companies in
Germany deal mainly with equestrian
articles.
g Riders and horse owners spend
approx. 2,6 billion Euro per year for
recurring costs around the horse. It
is extremely difficult to estimate the
entire turn-over of equestrian sport,
however, careful projections and estimations
put the sum at well over
5 billion Euro.
Further facts and figures can be
found in the annual report of the German
Equestrian Federation for Equestrian
Sports (FN) and on the Website
www.pferd-aktuell.de.
* All of the subsequent figures relate to
the year 2009 unless a different date is
stated.
** For the first time in history, Para-Dres-
sage will be included in the 2009 World
Equestrian Games.
GERMAN HORSE BREEDING –
THE GUARANTOR FOR SUCCESS
For decades, German horse breeding
has made its mark on international
equestrian sport. The names
of German horses are frequently
connected with Olympic, World and
European Championship titles, successes
at prestigious Grand Prix and
at World Cup finals.
The sophisticated breeding pro-
gramme (a requirement of the animal
breeding legislation) of the
German Equestrian Federation and
its associated warmblood breed
associations forms the basis for
the long-term sporting success of
German horses. Even though each
breed association has its own focus
and traditions, they all have agreed
on a common breeding aim. The
breeding programme ranges from
the judgement of foals to performance
tests for stallions and mares
and includes a breeding value estimation
on the basis of all sport and
breeding dates.
The horses are the results of a
programme of selective breeding,
whether they be Olympic Champions
or vaulting horses at the riding
club. Almost a century ago, some
German breed associations demanded
that only performance-tested
stallions be used for breeding. It
took until 1980, however, until the
stallion performance test became
mandatory for all future sires. Today
there are several levels of selection
from which detailed information can
be gained about stallions, mares
and their progeny.
Facts and Figures
g In 2009, 3,991 riding horse sires
and 71,604 riding horse brood
mares were registered. A total of
35,759 riding horse foals were registered
in 2009. In addition, we recorded
in the field of riding ponies and
small horses: 4,168 sires, 26,586
brood mares and 11,402 foals.
g At the Olympic Games in Hong
Kong in 2008, 52 out of 194 competing
horses were proven German
bred horses. These German bred
horses won 18 of 45 possible medals:
nine gold, four silver and five
bronze. 19 of the 47 dressage horses
in Hong Kong were of German
origin. In the Olympic Jumping com-
petitions that were open to 77 horses,
29 German-bred horses competed.
At the World Championships
of the formerly seven official equestrian
disciplines in Aachen 2006, almost
25 percent of all participating
horses were of German origin and
won a total of 37 medals. Thus German
Studbooks are by far the most
successful ones in the world.
The Rider
Forms the Horse
Function and Development of the
Muscles of the Riding Horse
The authors explain the physiological facts
which are the foundation of the teaching
of riding and discuss important factors
in the training of the horse and how to
recognise and rectify training problems.
A competent author as well as experts and
native speakers who are well-versed in equestrian
terminology guarantee the correctness
of the specialised expressions and relevant
Riding with
Understanding and Feeling
Know How, Understand Why, Feel When
In this book Michael Putz comments on
the German Guidelines Volumes 1 & 2
and presents clear evidence that serious,
carefully considered training, carried out
feelingly in accordance with the rules
of classical equestrianism, is the system
which is ideally suited to horses and most
beneficial for them. His prime objective, to
convey the real training of horse and rider,
is achieved by means of his exceptional
ability to recognise problems, to analyse
them and provide solutions which it is possible to implement in
practice. The result of this form of training is the maintenance of
the horse’s pleasure in working together with the rider, its willingness
to perform and the “personality” of the horse as well as,
ultimately, a harmonious partnership between rider and horse.
