Mobility is important to everyone, but <strong>of</strong>ten it is<br />
not until we are older that we appreciate how<br />
much we take for granted <strong>the</strong> ability to get<br />
around.These days <strong>the</strong> motorised scooter has<br />
become quite a common sight <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> community<br />
and it has opened up new opportunities for<br />
disabled or older people to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> an active,<br />
<strong>in</strong>dependent lifestyle.<br />
<strong>Keep<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>you</strong> <strong>safe</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> rider's <strong>seat</strong> provides<br />
important <strong>safe</strong>ty advice <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> purchase,<br />
operation and ma<strong>in</strong>tenance <strong>of</strong> a motorised<br />
scooter. It has been published by my <strong>Department</strong><br />
as part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Federal Government’s Choose<br />
health! strategy, which aims to promote healthy<br />
lifestyles for members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> veteran community.<br />
This booklet will help <strong>you</strong> make <strong>the</strong> right choice<br />
if <strong>you</strong> are th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g about buy<strong>in</strong>g a motorised<br />
scooter. It will also help <strong>you</strong> make <strong>the</strong> most <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>you</strong>r scooter to participate <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> life <strong>of</strong> <strong>you</strong>r<br />
community, ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> <strong>you</strong>r <strong>in</strong>dependence and<br />

ELIGIBILITY<br />
There are Federal and State funded<br />
programs that supply motorised<br />
scooters and wheelchairs.The<br />
<strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Veterans'</strong> <strong>Affairs</strong> will<br />
only fund motorised scooters under<br />
exceptional circumstances. Strict<br />
eligibility criteria apply and <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />
� The veteran hav<strong>in</strong>g a war caused<br />
<strong>in</strong>jury or disease directly related<br />
to <strong>the</strong>ir decreased mobility;<br />
� The veteran hav<strong>in</strong>g a severe and<br />
permanent reduction <strong>in</strong> mobility;<br />
and<br />
� The veteran meet<strong>in</strong>g a range <strong>of</strong><br />
functional and social criteria.<br />
Your doctor and occupational <strong>the</strong>rapist<br />
can assess whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>you</strong>r circumstances<br />
meet <strong>the</strong> criteria.<br />

Motorised<br />
scooter users<br />

pedestrians and<br />
<strong>the</strong>refore must<br />
travel on <strong>the</strong><br />
footpath.
What may affect my<br />
scooter operat<strong>in</strong>g skills?<br />
�<br />
• Feel<strong>in</strong>g tired or unwell.<br />
• Prescription or over <strong>the</strong><br />
counter medic<strong>in</strong>e <strong>you</strong><br />
may be tak<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
• Alcohol may impair <strong>you</strong>r ability<br />
to operate <strong>you</strong>r scooter <strong>safe</strong>ly.<br />
• Forgetfulness or memory loss can affect <strong>you</strong>r<br />
ability to <strong>safe</strong>ly operate <strong>you</strong>r scooter.<br />
Wear <strong>you</strong>r glasses and<br />
hear<strong>in</strong>g aid when us<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>you</strong>r scooter and have<br />
<strong>you</strong>r eyesight and<br />
hear<strong>in</strong>g checked<br />
regularly.<br />
Do I know<br />
current road rules?<br />
Many road users have not been<br />
tested on road rules s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>y sat<br />
for <strong>the</strong>ir licence.<br />
Know<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> current road rules and<br />
what to expect <strong>of</strong> traffic will make<br />
<strong>you</strong>r travel <strong>safe</strong>r.<br />
Road rule books and o<strong>the</strong>r publications<br />
are available from <strong>you</strong>r local licens<strong>in</strong>g<br />
and registration authority.<br />

When on <strong>the</strong> footpath<br />
remember to...<br />
• Consider <strong>the</strong> <strong>safe</strong>ty <strong>of</strong><br />
o<strong>the</strong>r pedestrians.<br />
• Keep to <strong>the</strong> left side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
footpath, where <strong>safe</strong>.<br />
• Use hand signals.<br />
• Expect <strong>the</strong> unexpected –<br />
watch for people com<strong>in</strong>g out<br />
<strong>of</strong> shops and cars revers<strong>in</strong>g<br />
out <strong>of</strong> driveways.<br />
• Be aware <strong>of</strong> environmental<br />
hazards such as railway l<strong>in</strong>es,<br />
pot holes, and dra<strong>in</strong>s.<br />

remember to...<br />
• Travel close to <strong>the</strong> kerb.<br />
• Travel aga<strong>in</strong>st oncom<strong>in</strong>g traffic.<br />
• Try to establish eye contact with<br />
oncom<strong>in</strong>g drivers.<br />
• Return to <strong>the</strong> footpath as soon<br />
as possible.<br />
• When on country roads special<br />
care is required,as road edges<br />
are <strong>of</strong>ten rough and vehicles<br />
may travel at high speed.<br />
When Cross<strong>in</strong>g The Road<br />
remember to...<br />
• Choose a <strong>safe</strong> place to cro s s .<br />
• Use a marked cross<strong>in</strong>g if ava i l a b l e.<br />
• STOP as close to <strong>the</strong> edge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> kerb as<br />
<strong>you</strong> can.<br />
• LOOK for t ra fic <strong>in</strong> all dire ct i o n s .<br />
• L I STEN for t ra ffic <strong>you</strong> may not be able to see.<br />

To Increase Your Safety<br />
remember to...<br />
• Wear lightly coloured cloth<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
• Wear a high visibility vest.<br />
• Attach a fluorescent orange flag<br />
to <strong>you</strong>r scooter, high enough to be<br />
visible to pedestrians and drivers<br />
(approx 1.8 – 2m high).<br />
• Use lights if <strong>you</strong> have <strong>the</strong>m.<br />
• Reflectors or reflective tape on <strong>the</strong><br />
scooter <strong>in</strong>creases <strong>you</strong>r visibility.<br />

Ma<strong>in</strong>tenance Tips<br />
• Arrange an assessment and<br />
tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g with <strong>you</strong>r occupational<br />
<strong>the</strong>rapist prior to purchas<strong>in</strong>g <strong>you</strong>r scooter.<br />
• Arrange <strong>in</strong>surance cover for <strong>you</strong>rself,<br />
<strong>you</strong>r scooter and o<strong>the</strong>r parties <strong>in</strong> case<br />
<strong>of</strong> an accident.<br />
• Alcohol and some medication may<br />
affect <strong>you</strong>r ability to operate <strong>you</strong>r<br />
scooter. Ask <strong>you</strong>r doctor or pharmacist<br />
for fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>formations.<br />
• Check <strong>you</strong>r tyres and battery regularly.<br />
• Arrange a ma<strong>in</strong>tenance schedule with<br />
<strong>you</strong>r supplier.<br />
• Store <strong>you</strong>r scooter <strong>in</strong> a dry, secure place.<br />
• Ensure <strong>you</strong> have approved storage to<br />
<strong>safe</strong>ly carry any parcels.<br />
