Archimedean<br />

Established <strong>in</strong> 2000 by director and architect David Ajasa-Adekunle,<br />

Innovation Imperative has created its first 38-metre motor<strong>yacht</strong><br />

concept. The Archimedean is a stealthy look<strong>in</strong>g, Wally-esque<br />

<strong>design</strong> that has been shortlisted <strong>in</strong> The International Yacht<br />

& Aviation Awards 2012. Ajasa-Adekunle tells SYD more<br />

about the project.<br />

As an award-w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g young<br />

architecture practice with a<br />

grow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> <strong>yacht</strong> <strong>design</strong>,<br />

we set ourselves a brief: to <strong>design</strong> an<br />

<strong>in</strong>comparable and uncompromis<strong>in</strong>g<br />

super<strong>yacht</strong> concept, a potential <strong>design</strong><br />

classic dist<strong>in</strong>ct from <strong>design</strong>s past or<br />

present—the Schröder House equivalent of<br />

the <strong>yacht</strong> world.<br />

The Archimedean is the response to that<br />

<strong>design</strong> brief. The <strong>design</strong> <strong>in</strong>novations are<br />

not reserved to the aesthetics. Based on<br />

simple and elegant geometric proportions,<br />

this unashamedly contemporary 38-metre<br />

<strong>yacht</strong>, with a 7.2-metre beam, has a<br />

m<strong>in</strong>imalist open-plan <strong>in</strong>terior more ak<strong>in</strong><br />

to a New York-style loft than a traditional<br />

power boat. The bright, open, flexible,<br />

multi-use options of the social spaces are<br />

complemented by the clean l<strong>in</strong>es and<br />

simple, well-<strong>design</strong>ed bespoke fitt<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

The relationship between the <strong>in</strong>ternal and<br />

external spaces and the transition between<br />

them has also been carefully <strong>design</strong>ed to<br />

be consistent with the m<strong>in</strong>imalist styl<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

the exterior and <strong>in</strong>terior communal areas,<br />

and it is here that the real <strong>design</strong> treats can<br />

be appreciated.<br />

The seem<strong>in</strong>gly featureless deck<br />

accommodates a flush ramp, which at the<br />

push of a button pivots down from the<br />

deck surface for easy access. Similarly, once<br />

on deck, a shallower parallel ramp can<br />

pivot down to an automatically lowered<br />

deck area for recessed seat<strong>in</strong>g and d<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

adjacent to, and directly accessible from,<br />

the cockpit. Additional facilities such as<br />

recessed sun loungers, a dr<strong>in</strong>ks bar and/or<br />

a Jacuzzi could also be accommodated <strong>in</strong><br />

the same way with<strong>in</strong> sections of the large<br />

ma<strong>in</strong> deck towards the bow.<br />

At the opposite end of the <strong>yacht</strong>, the<br />

triangular stern can open out for board<strong>in</strong>g<br />

when moored, and sea access when not.<br />

The rigid roof is retractable, allow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the aft portion of the <strong>yacht</strong> to be fully<br />

opened. Also with<strong>in</strong> this area, a concealed<br />

banquet-style d<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g table, housed with<strong>in</strong><br />

the floor-to-ceil<strong>in</strong>g fitted storage either<br />

side of the rear portion of the <strong>yacht</strong>, can<br />

be deployed. As the focal po<strong>in</strong>t, this<br />

section of the <strong>yacht</strong> benefits from a s<strong>in</strong>gle<br />

(on entry) to double-height, dual-aspect<br />

space, which is volum<strong>in</strong>ous yet <strong>in</strong>vit<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and <strong>in</strong>timate. In a matter of seconds, this<br />

seem<strong>in</strong>gly sparsely furnished and enclosed<br />

space can be transformed <strong>in</strong>to a generous<br />

feast<strong>in</strong>g area partially or fully open to the<br />

elements. Although more constra<strong>in</strong>ed, this<br />

pr<strong>in</strong>ciple of flexibility is cont<strong>in</strong>ued <strong>in</strong>to the<br />

reconfigurable cab<strong>in</strong>s, which are separated<br />

by movable partitions to enable fewer but<br />

larger cab<strong>in</strong>s to be created.<br />

A balance between eye-catch<strong>in</strong>g<br />

aesthetics, flexible <strong>in</strong>terior and high<br />

performance <strong>in</strong>formed the shape and<br />

proportions of this composite Very Slender<br />

Vessel (VSV) <strong>in</strong>tended for comfort and<br />

efficiency, even when pierc<strong>in</strong>g waves at<br />

speeds approach<strong>in</strong>g 60 knots. The high<br />

length-to-beam ratio coupled with the<br />

choices of lightweight materials will afford<br />

lower overall power requirements for which<br />

smaller more efficient eng<strong>in</strong>es with greater<br />

range can be specified.<br />

Mov<strong>in</strong>g forward, The Archimedean will<br />

undergo an extensive R&D programme<br />

to ref<strong>in</strong>e the <strong>design</strong> and ensure optimal<br />

performance and efficiency.<br />
