As a nation we continue to make records and ct new highs in many statistical fields. Along the improved highways of the country -- we take pride in the modern automobiles that speed us along to where we are going. Sometimes the end is death, or at least for about one hundred persons every day of the year in this land of chance-taking- and . Figures released by the National Safety Coun-ci- l reveal that January, of this year, set an all-tim- e high in the number of riders and pedestrians killed by automobiles. Exactly 3,050 reported fatalities put the month 200 deaths ahead of the former rec-ord- , set in January, 1934. The death list can be reduced. The fact has "been established wherever officials, backed by public opinion, relentlessly pursue safety programs. NEW DRIVER'S LAW A great deal of thought is now being given to careful driving by the state department and efforts are being made as nearly as possible to make the highways safer for travel. This has been urged for the past few years, but active steps are now in the formation to complete the work. The new law will require that everyone take a test as to their ability to drive a car. This will embrace eye sight, quick action and thinking, and a number of other things that will be taken into consideration One thing especially that should be put in the law is drinking. The man or woman who drinks should not be issued a license at all, for there are more wrecks caused from this one thing alone than any other. The number of accidents and deaths taking place each day in this and all other states is some-thin- g appalling. A person who can not drive in a sane manner, and think quickly enough to take care of an ordinary situation, should not be allowed behind the steering wheel of a fast moving automobile. And one of the ways in which the spirit is best titillated is to enter a snooty restaurant, laboriously pronounce a few of the foreign dishes, and then wait eagerly to see what shows up. CURRENT COMMENT cv LONG STAPLE COTTON Baylor County (Seymour) Banner The raising of longer staple cotton seems to be a rather concerted movement over the country just now. And it is a movement that was not started too soon. Too much short staple in this country has ruined our foreign markets, which the tariff was hurting badly enough anyway. One of our keenest competitors in the cotton business is India, and a short staple is general there. So that, when this country raises the same grade of cotton our farmers are thrown into competition with the cheap labor of India. The farmer has not been the only sinner in this short staple business. Somehow the market have not favored the man who raised a good grade. Buyers for the state or a county have had the habit of lumping the whole community under one classification, and the man who produced a really good staple received very little more for his trouble than the one who raised Half and Half If that condition can be corrected, it ought not to be hard to convince the producer that it is to his best interests to raise a better grade. Whenever that is done it Is going to eliminate a part of the handicaps under which the cotton farmer has been laboring for the past several years. VIEWS AND REVIEWS Franklin D. This action is being stimulated all over the territory, by those who realize something must be done, or else a poor prospect is in view for a good cotton market during the 1937 cotton harvesting season. The seed now being used in this section, according to tests that have been made, show an extremely low germination, and the fact that cotton will germinate does not mean that it will produce a healthy stock of cotton. In order to increase the yield 'per acre, and the staple of cotton, the HASKELL territory is going to be forced to introduce better grade planting seed from sections that were blest with more generous rainfall. Haskell there many tions in Texas as well as in other parts of the world where only short staple cotton can be produced. Why then should we try to compete with the lowest type and cheap labor when we can produce the type of cotton that spinners are ever seeking.
