to embody the love and joy of Jesus Christ
within our community and the world.
As disciples of Jesus Christ, we are called by God to be:
Spiritually alive
Energizing in worship
Welcoming to all
Expanding our outreach

Pastor’s Report
Peter J. M. Henry
I give thanks for another year of ministry at Grosse Pointe
Memorial Church. With the energy, patience, and
faithfulness of our members, we continue to move into the
future God has prepared for us. We find ourselves
stretched at the end of 2008, as our ministries and
membership expand even while our staff is a little smaller.
Please continue to pray for our associate pastor search
committee as they seek the individual who will serve with
us in ministry. THANK YOU for all of your support and
prayers. The Spirit is alive and in midst, praise be to God.
The following slides have a few things about our life
together, serving as a sort of pastor’s report. From there,
enjoy the annual report!

Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees strives to support the mission of Jesus Christ with the guidance of
Christian values and faith. The 2008 Board, its subcommittees and the church treasurer
have faithfully tried to prudently manage the oversight of the church’s administration
and finance, building and grounds, memorial gifts and investment/endowment
performance.
The board’s 2008 agenda included a continuation of initiatives from previous years. The
“Building and Grounds” five year matrix continued to be used to make infrastructure
repairs and improvements. The board was able to replace the faulty sidewalks in front of
the church, make landscape improvements and repairs to our existing irrigation system.
The sanctuary sound system was completed and technology improvements included
church‐wide audiovisual enhancements and a new phone system. The administrative
offices were updated with new air conditioning, computers and copiers. The plans for
the church crib and nursery areas were approved to create a safe and inviting
environment for young families.
A dedicated group of church members and staff completed an Endowment Policy for
Grosse Pointe Memorial Church. The policy will provide a framework for future bequests
and gifts. Future boards intend to streamline the management of the overall endowment
portfolio and budget process. A balanced budget was achieved in 2008 due to better than
expected revenue, prudent expense oversight and the grateful support of the
congregation. The economic climate will be a challenge in the near future but the
dedicated members of the Board of Trustees will continue to be faithful stewards for
Grosse Pointe Memorial Church.

Communications Council
The goal of the communication council for 2008 was to project the image of Grosse Pointe
Memorial Church as the active, friendly, well respected congregation within the community, within
the greater community and within the Presbytery that it is: strong in its faith, strong in its
relationships with one another, a caring group of people reaching out to others to spread the word of
God, the love of God, the grace of God.
Criteria was established for an updated web site. A search for a new provider introduced Jay Hunter
with strong credentials. He was selected from several candidates. The new web site was launched in
September. Visitors may listen to Reverend Henry preaching, read the Carillon online, see photos of
mission trips and many other church activities. The web site is designed to speak to both the
membership and potential new members with information pertinent to each. Bill Dahling took an
active role in contributing his thoughts relative to site content and Steve McQueen headed the search
for web provider.
New page layout software was researched and purchased along with a high end color printer and
folder so the Sunday Bulletins could be printed in color in house. New volunteer photographer
James Lady contributed many photos to the church archives for such purposes. Church members are
encouraged to contribute photos they have taken of church events or details of the building. Judy
Greiner and Betty Young researched other bulletins. Peter Strek established a list of photography
volunteers. bsYOUNG & associates art director assisted Pam in setting up the Bulletin format in
InDesign.
Photography archives have been established to build a basis of photos to be used in the Carillon, web
site and bulletins and upcoming 150th anniversary commemorative book.
Stewardship materials were produced by Maureen Kaiser in conjunction with stewardship council.
Maureen was instrumental in setting up the Sunday morning stewardship program, Rex. Betty Young
submitted a stewardship article for the Carillon.
Email addresses have been collected to send communication online rather than through the mail for
those who choose electronic content.

Outreach Council
Distributed over $230,000 in outreach funds on behalf
of GPMC
Organized, led, or supported numerous hands‐on
outreach opportunities, including community dinners
at Calvin East Presbyterian Church and another two
Hurricane Katrina relief trips.
Helped to host a visiting mission team to the Detroit
area
Used special endowment funds as challenge money for
hunger offerings

knitters and artisans, netting major funds for mission‐giving.
Designed and presented "Women's Sunday" at both April 20 worship services,
highlighted by visiting minister, The Reverend Marsha Foster Boyd, PhD, President of the
Ecumenical Theological Seminary, Detroit.
Supported projects for women and children served by Dr. Mike and Nancy Haninger's
medical mission in Tshikaji, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Sponsored a dinner
program for the couple when they visited GPMC in Nov.
Facilitated regular delivery of donated food an and clothing to PWPD mission, Second
Mile Center, in addition to substantial financial support.
Angel Tree Committee, in cooperation with the Prison Fellowship Ministry (PCM),
organized two Christmas parties with gift‐giving to 156 children with an incarcerated
parent.
Sponsored weekly and monthly Bible study groups, as well as monthly luncheon
luncheons with lectures in a series, "God's children in faraway places."
Presented two Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) to GPMC for use in cardio‐
respiratory emergencies.

Stewardship Council
The Stewardship Council planned the 2009 Stewardship Campaign,” Praise and Thanksgiving”, organized
it and executed it. We shortened the length of the campaign and moved it back a couple of weeks. We
had three events surrounding the campaign.
October 13, 2009 ‐‐‐We had a Leadership Dinner in early October for all elders, trustees and deacons
that the Stewardship Council prepared. We explained the campaign and how we needed their
assistance both in terms of early pledging and delivery on November 2, 2008.
 October 26, 2008‐‐‐‐ The all congregational 10 a.m. church service/brunch – A Journey of Music
and Love ‐‐‐that included Rex Lewis and his mother, Catherine, as part of the church service and the
brunch that followed. It was an inspiring day that kicked off our Praise and Thanksgiving Campaign,
more than three hundred church members and families attended.
November 2, 2008‐‐‐Logistics of preparing hundreds of “Praise and Thanksgiving” bags (which
included a bag of bread mix, the Stewardship letter and a prayer of Thanksgiving by Peter Henry) and
having them in zones for the elders, trustees and deacons to pick up for delivery on November 2.
Stewardship Council members, children, spouses and church personnel all created a miracle in
preparing all the bags. The bags were delivered to members in the Grosse Pointes and immediate
surround areas. All others received the letter and prayer in the mail.
February, 2009– Our campaign currently has 405 pledges representing $921,000. That includes 15
new pledges, 23 reactivated pledges and xx units that increased their giving.

Worship Council
In 2007, the Session set as a priority the development of a systematic evaluation of worship, and the Worship Council
began work on the project. In 2008, thanks to the hard work of a competent task force: Dale Brown, Claudia Vala Young,
Rev. Peter Henry, Charles Raines, and Andy Bedsworth, a survey was devised and disseminated to the congregation. Over
250 surveys have been completed and returned. It will be a major project of the 2009 Worship Council to tabulate the
results and report them to Congregation.
In addition to the Worship Survey, the council was responsible for the following:
Duties on a weekly basis:
Lay readers, acolytes and crucifers for each service.
Appropriate hymn numbers and paraments .
Assigning/Reminding on a monthly basis:
Elders to serve Communion and present candidates for Baptism.
Members of the congregation to present the elements.
Staffing set‐up and/or clean‐up of seasonal events such as:
Palm Sunday ‐ palm fronds.
Maundy Thursday dinner.
Carillon Concert picnics.
Hanging of the Greens and Lighting of the Advent Candles.
Miscellaneous items:
Supervised communion.
Responsible for the Showcase for one month during the year.
Monthly meetings which included articles/discussion on worship history /practices.
The Worship Council members were Lynne Bacon*, Jackie Beck, Zack Bechowies, Mary Berg*, Cynthia Ford, Chelsea
Gilbert*, Peter Nyboer*, Patrick O’Brien, Marc Palazzolo*, Carol Siegel, Arthur Vidrich*, Emily Williams*, Deb Wright,
Paul Yascolt, Claudia Vala Young, and our staff liaison, Charles Raines.

Waiting for you...

God Loves Me, 8:30 a.m.

Make a joyful noise unto the Lord!

Go in peace.

Diane Hernden
This has been a year of unexpected gifts and abundant blessings. Many have taken responsibility to see
projects completed and have generously contributed time, talent, treasure and unwavering support to
the ministry and mission of this great church. .
Collectively progress was made in the upgrading of technology throughout the building.
Cross‐training of staff continues as well as training in soft‐ware applications.
A Gardening Angels group was formed to help plant flowers, provide decorative landscaping, weed
flower beds and prune and shape scrubs.
The outside grounds were cleaned up, old trees removed and a new tree planted in place of the Elm.
A safety wall was installed around the boiler system and a gate mounted in the Sexton work room.
New hand railings were put up around the exterior of the building.
Church improvement projects continue to be tracked and prioritized. In 2009 repairs will be made
on the organ and the Crib and Toddler Room will be upgraded.
Collectively a new web site was launched and a new bulletin created and produced in house.
We continued to identify new ways to save money and to put the money give by
church members to faithful use.

Carol Marks
2008 has been a wonderful time in the life of Grosse Pointe
Memorial Church. It has been a time of love and healing; a time
for caring and serving. Peter Henry has brought us a vision, a
shared joy and a true ministry of love. We have seen our
congregational members walk through difficult times and rejoice
in shared joys. Many have lived through illness, disability, job
loss, divorce or the death of someone very dear. Others have had
victory, remission, cure, reuniting, new beginnings and success.
There have been a few constants in all these circumstances,
God’s love, the church community’s care, and the signs of faith
that inspires one and reaffirms life’s meaning. This congregation
is a beacon of love and a haven for wounded souls. Thank you for
being so faithful, so loving and so strong. You care about what
happens in this faith community and you make a difference here
and in the world.

Carol Marks (cont’d)
I had the honor of serving with the following groups this year:
The Deacons of this church are a very clear example of the service the Bible speaks of. They lovingly
care for this congregation and minister to the needs of this parish. I want to thank Bill Brown,
moderator for his enthusiasm and joy; his constant and caring leadership
The Stephen Ministry has been amazing in 2008. There have been 26 active caregivers, each one has
cared for one or more care receivers. A special thank‐ you to Guy and Marilyn Doyal, their leaders.
The Nominating Committee‐ I observed a prayerful and loving process. This committee worked very
hard to find the gifts of this congregation’s members and match those talents with all the needs of
your church. They served you well; special thanks to Nancy Schulte and Karen Pratt and the
committee as they transformed the task of finding leadership into a matching of spiritual gifts with
leadership roles.
The Health, Healing and Wholeness Council under the loving leadership of Kim Williams helped
provide a wonderful Lenten journey.
The Parish Life Council with the exuberant and capable Gail Halliday had a delightful luncheon that
Denyse Singelyn chaired with joy to honor our seniors, led the annual hanging of the greens and
helped shepherd Lowell Ferguson’s Senior Yoga.
OWLS, Older Wiser, Learning Still, continue to flourish under Doris Bruckers’ inspired, caring
leadership.

Charles Raines
2008 was a very full year for the many musicians of Memorial Church.
The LOGOS choirs offered anthems virtually every Sunday morning
during the academic year and a joyful Christmas pageant musical. Our
stellar Memorial Church Choir and soloists provided anthems and
Sunday morning musical leadership throughout the year. Special
Sunday morning music with orchestra was offered during Lent. In
December the choir with orchestra presented Bach’s cantata “Sleepers,
Wake!” and a Middle Hour “Coffee Concert” performance of the Advent
portions of Handel’s Messiah. The Memorial Church Choir continues
to attract new members. Our handbell ringers and carillon players
provided bell music throughout the year.
Standing ovations go to all of our music leaders – LOGOS choir
directors Julie and Debbie Bellovich, Jeanine Reaume, David Eifert,
Leslie Brumm, Kylee Remington and Rachael Rose; Memorial Choir
section leaders Kylee Remington, Rachael Rose, Danica Randall, Chris
Bauder, Patrick O’Brien, Warren Eich and David Eifert; Senior
Carillonist Phyllis Webb. BRAVOs and kudos are extended to the
nearly 200 singers and ringers of all ages. Thank you each and all for
your generous gifts of music in worship.
