• James Krueger, a WSU sleep researcher,<br />
and his colleagues had their article about<br />
the chemical triggers of sleep named one<br />
of the top 100 science stories of 2010 by<br />
Discover magazine.<br />
• Ted Koppel, television news veteran and anchor<br />
of abc’s Nightline for 25 years, visited<br />
the <strong>Pullman</strong> campus and was presented<br />
with the 2011 edward r. murrow award<br />
for lifetime achievement in broadcast<br />
Journalism.<br />
• WSU joined state and Spokane community<br />
leaders to celebrate the groundbreaking of<br />
the biomedical and health Sciences building<br />
at the riverpoint campus in Spokane.<br />
the building will house the medical education<br />
program jointly administered by WSu,<br />
the university of Washington, and the WSu<br />
college of Pharmacy.<br />
• Legendary actress and comedian Betty<br />
White became an honorary Washington<br />
State university alumna. WSu Provost<br />
Warwick bayly presented her with a white<br />
doctor’s coat at the Washington State<br />
veterinary medical association’s (WSvma)<br />
centennial gala in yakima.<br />
• Mike Leach was named head football<br />
coach. leach brings a proven record of<br />
winning to <strong>Pullman</strong>, including 10 bowl bids<br />
in 10 seasons.<br />
• Gregory W. Yasinitsky, Regents Professor<br />
and coordinator of jazz studies in the WSu<br />
School of music, was the eleventh recipient<br />
of the WSu eminent faculty award.<br />

• Construction began on the new Northside<br />
residence hall, located between regents<br />
hall and Streit hall. completion is expected<br />
by fall 2013. the $32.6 million, 300-bed<br />
facility will be the second new residence<br />
hall constructed on the <strong>Pullman</strong> campus<br />
since the early 1970s.<br />
• Washington grape growers and wine makers<br />
made a $7.4 million commitment to<br />
support a new Washington State university<br />
Wine Science center, planned for construction<br />
in the tri-cities.<br />
• The College of Liberal Arts and the College<br />
of Sciences merged to form the college of<br />
arts and Sciences.<br />
• The Paul G. Allen Center for Global Animal<br />
health was formally dedicated in <strong>Pullman</strong>.<br />
the research facility houses a state-of-theart<br />
infectious disease research center for<br />
investigating emerging diseases throughout<br />
the world.<br />
• New premium seating and a new press<br />
box opened on the south side of martin<br />
Stadium, marking the conclusion of an $80<br />
million construction project.<br />
• Veteran journalist Dan Rather was honored<br />
at the 38th edward r. murrow Symposium<br />
at WSu <strong>Pullman</strong>.<br />
• Sue Clark, WSU Regents Professor and<br />
chair of the chemistry department, was<br />
awarded the american chemical Society<br />
<strong>2012</strong> garvan-olin medal for outstanding<br />
leadership in nuclear chemistry and radio-<br />
chemistry and ongoing efforts to increase<br />
the participation and inclusion of women<br />
in science.<br />
• Michael J. Smerdon, Regents Professor<br />
in the School of molecular biosciences<br />
in the college of veterinary medicine,<br />
received the <strong>2012</strong> eminent faculty award.<br />
Smerdon has conducted groundbreaking<br />
research on how the body repairs dna<br />
damage caused by chemicals and uv<br />
light.<br />
• Emile C. (Mel) Netzhammer III, who has<br />
served as provost and vice president for<br />
academic affairs for Keene State College<br />
since 2006, was named the new chancellor<br />
of Washington State university<br />
vancouver.<br />
• George R. Pettit (’52 B.S. Chemistry), an<br />
organic chemist who pioneered the search<br />
for anti-cancer compounds in marine organisms<br />
and terrestrial insects and plants,<br />
accepted the <strong>2012</strong> regents’ distinguished<br />
alumnus award.<br />
• On December 8, <strong>2012</strong>, one of best groups<br />
of students ever in the history of Washington<br />
State university graduated during<br />
the 12th annual fall commencement<br />
ceremony in beasley coliseum.<br />
