There must be some mistake. Music fans pursue Mozart in Vienna,
or they seek him in Salzburg – but surely not in Berlin!
Berlin’s well-kept
mozart
secret
a visit to the Mozart manuscript collection in the Berlin state library
By C. De Reese, IllustRatIons: staatsBIBlIothek zu BeRlIn - PReussIsCheR kultuRBesItz
His visit to the city and the Prussian court in April 1788 was a disappointment –
there were no vacant posts for court musicians, merely a couple of commissions
for string quartets, to include particularly beautiful cello parts, so that Friedrich
Wilhelm II could show off his prowess … No-one would claim that this brief visit
qualifies Berlin as a ‘Mozart City’. Very few traces of his stay in Berlin remain.
Yet the city centre harbours a treasure which turns the Viennese green with envy
and which the citizens of Salzburg would love to get their hands on.
It is kept in a vault in the Berlin State Library, a large historical building
on the well-known street Unter den Linden.
