About $200,000 Will Come to
the Hawaiian Department
in Form of Back Pay ;
(8peclal StAr-BuHetl- D Crurespondaace)
FT. SHAFTER, May 6. The cabled
announcement that the suDreme court
nad handed down , a decision to. the
effect that service in Hawaii prior
to August 24, 1912, entitled the members-
of the army to. an, additional
amount on their pay was received; at
the post "with great joy. and" many
rapid calculations were made to determine
the exact' amounts' to be eceived
under the' decision by the vari-
here from Australia and the mainland.
He gays that the "
raising sheep in are excellent,
and that there wm be no
trouble in launching v the industry,
once the land ia secured. --
;X''-
Mr;. Barry, leaves for the coast 'tomorrow
to consult with his brother on
the matter. In the meantime, Interested
partiea in Honolulu will . look
Into the land matter. He intends
here again at an early date.
It should be stated, however, that
sheep-raisin- g, on a much .larger scale
than Mr.- - r
Barry to engage in
it la one cf the oldest industries of
Hawaii.' ; -
LOCKETT
-
-- possibilities for
Hawaii ous Individuals whose service her
'
absolutely, was within the time, limits during
which the' additional' compensation, 1
to be allowed.' The decision not only
; affects the 'commissioned
-
visiting
proposes,
COL.
'
officers i of
the various - commands but ' also applies
to the enlisted men ' of . whatever
grade. VThe Increase of pay for
the enlisted linen Is even greater, In
percentage than that allowed the officers,:
Inaamuch as they will get 20
per cent "while the officers get but
ten. Every - soldier, therefore, who
served In thes Islands prior to August
21, 1912, wiir get a sum. for each
month of his service ranging . from
three dollars, for' men In the first enlistment
as privates, to around- - $20
for chief musicians and similarly high
rated enlisted men. .
- ;
The!" Increase- - 'of pay, to be allowed
under the decision both for officers
and men1 will he ten and twenty per
cent respectively on the total pay
drawn by the Individual and not limited
to the base pay alone.
The increase, therefore applies to
all pay receivable under the old rates
and men who had qualified as experts
and sharpshooters and marksmen
In the Infantry and cavalry or as
gunners," observers and like special
ratings in the coast artillery will
"draw down," as the soldiers put it
a tidy sum total for those ratings, in
addition to the sums to be paid them
on their pay proper. The estimate,
therefore, of the sum involved in the
decision of the supreme court will
It is seen, run well up toward the
$200,000 mark If not beyond. This
estimate Is based on a consideration
THE COONH FAIR
EDITOR
Make your plans and go to the County Fair
tomorrow and Friday.
It is the greatest opportunity Honolulu and
the Army have evr had for "getting acquainted."
The lest of good nature always prtvails
at the county gatherings and formality is swal-
lowed up in an abundance of kindly and
Honolulu believes in the army and we are
sure the army believes in Honolulu. They'll be
more certain of this certainty if they become Inciter
acquainted.
