Discuss key concepts in molecular, evolutionary and synthetic biology, and recognize how all living organisms have compositional and organizational similarities at the molecular level. 2. Review theories of evolution and the origins of life from both historical and theoretical perspectives, and examine the interconnections with changing values of society in the context of contemporary discoveries in biology. 3. Critically analyze and debate scientific, philosophical and ethical issues pertinent to modern-day synthetic biology research. 4. Evaluate how emerging and future biological technologies may benefit and/or potentially endanger the global population. Lecture Time // Second semester (Wed) Life 2.0: Synthetic Biology and the Future Bioeconomy Synthetic Biology has been heralded as the solution to many of contemporary society’s most pressing problems in energy, food and medicine. Will synthetic biology really deliver on its promises in our lifetimes, or is it just rebranded scientific technology? This course brings together molecular biology, evolutionary biology and insight into the origins of life to allow students to understand how synthetic biology is now attempting to solve many of humanity’s gravest challenges. We will discuss the sweeping discoveries of molecular biology with a particular perspective on the nature and origins of life, and reflect on the opportunities, possibilities and risks of technologies emerging from the synthesis of life de novo. The course content will be explored through a blend of lectures and video materials, supported by interactive learning tasks in small groups. The tutorials will be used to consolidate ideas and discuss issues in greater depth. Course Co-ordinator Dr J.A.
