Building Tomorrow’s Leaders – Today
Girl Scouts of NE Kansas & NW Missouri
At Girl Scouts of NE Kansas & NW Missouri we are
committed to moving at the speed of today's girls with
innovative programming, impactful community service
projects and incredible leadership experiences. We are
dedicated to bringing the Girl Scout Leadership
Experience to every girl in our 47 counties from rural
communities to urban neighborhoods. We thank you, our
donors, for making this possible. As girls discover more
about themselves and the world around them, connect
with their peers and take action to make the world a
better place, they transform into leaders of tomorrow.
Being a part of that is a just a phenomenal opportunity that we don't want any girl to miss out.
A Girl Scout's journey is made possible with support from committed parents and adult volunteers.
Girl Scouting develops qualities that will last a lifetime including strong values, social consciousness
and convictions about their own potential and self-worth. As a result, girls develop the skills needed
to help them avoid unhealthy behaviors, make responsible decisions and overcome challenges
throughout their lives.
As we celebrate our 100th Anniversary and embark on a new century in Girl Scouting, we hope you will
help girls imagine the possibilities. This will be the century when a girl discovers a cure for a disease
because her passion was sparked during a Girl Scout STEM (science, technology, engineering and
math) program, more women will become Fortune 500 CEOS because of the business skills learned
during the Girl Scout Cookie Program and new ways of protecting the environment will be created
because of the impact of summer camp. Just imagine the future with Girl Scouts taking the lead.
We hope you will join with us for an exciting year in Girl Scouting as we honor our past and look toward
our future. We appreciate your past support and hope you will continue to be a part of the Girl Scout
journey.
Yours in Girl Scouting,
Girl Scouts Discover New Skills in the
Outdoors
Girl Scouts Discover the World of STEM
Did you know that only 12% of engineers are female?
Through the Girl Scout science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs we
are trying to change these statistics. Using fun, hands-on programs, girls can make a
robot dance, go on a digital scavenger hunt or make a battery out of a lemon.
More than 3/4 of our Girl Scouts experienced at least
one outdoor adventure this year.
From camping with her troop to kayaking at resident camp,
there is something for every girl. Through outdoor programming,
girls discover new skills including problem solving, teamwork and
building self-esteem.
During one of our weekend ziplining sessions,
Isabelle tentatively began the long climb up the rope
ladder to the top of the zipline platform. With hands
shaking and a quick look down, she yelled out to the adult
volunteer that she didn't want to go any further. The volunteer
provided soothing words of; “it's OK, ziplining is totally your choice and
you don't have to do this today.” Isabelle slowly climbed back down and with
tears in her eyes removed her helmet and harness. As she watched her friends one
by one leave the platform with squeals of delight, her courage began to build. She had
set out to zipline, and she wanted to meet the challenge despite her fear. As she soared
through the air, she yelled out, “Yes, I did it”!
It's Her Girl Scout Journey!
At the Inventure University Engineering and Technology Camp,
Lauren discovered her love for engineering.
In one week, she designed her own website, made and
launched a rocket and worked with female
engineering students. The experience changed
Lauren’s attitude from believing that
engineering was just for boys to girls can be
successful as well. At the end of the
camp, she told her counselor, “I am
soooo going to be an engineer”!
It's Her Girl Scout
Journey!

Girl Scout Leadership Experience Year-End Highlights
Girl Scouts Connect to Run the World's Largest All-Girl Business
More than 26,000 Girl Scouts participated in this year's Cookie Program
selling more than 2.5 million boxes of cookies. Of course we all love the
sweet decadence of a Thin Mint, but do you know what that cookie
represents? Through the Cookie Program, girls learn business skills like
goal setting, marketing and financial literacy. They connect with each
other to run their business and then use some of their proceeds to help
their communities with service projects.
This year, girls averaged 96 boxes each and realized a 7% increase over
the previous year.
Hundreds of booth sales occur throughout the cookie
season. Girls are challenged to created marketing
materials, know facts about the product they are
selling and interact with customers. Just imagine
that in the future a girl that asked you to buy a
box of Thin Mints could be leading a
Fortune 500 Company.
Girl Scouts Take Action to Change
the World
The Girl Scout Gold and Silver Awards provide girls an
opportunity to take the lead and address a community need
by implementing and planning a project. In March, we
recognized 66 Gold and 180 Silver Award recipients.
Girls earning the Gold Award spend at least 65 hours completing their
projects. This year's projects ranged from environmental clean-up to a community
demonstration showing the impact of teen drinking and driving.
Lindsay's project pulled her entire community together with support from the local emergency
response teams, hospital and even Life Star of Topeka, an
emergency helicopter service to reenact a teen drunk driving
accident. With high school graduation and parties around the
corner, Lindsay knew her project would have an incredible
impact on her fellow students. She kept the details of her
project confidential, so that the powerful, visual display truly
demonstrated how in just a few minutes lives could be
changed forever.
