The American Association of Petroleum Geologists is the world’s largest
professional geological society with approximately 33,000 members in
115 countries.
AAPG was formed in 1917. Its purpose is to foster the spirit of scientific
research among its members and to advance the science of geology -
particularly as it relates to petroleum, natural gas, other subsurface fluids,
mineral resources and the environment.
To achieve these goals, AAPG publishes the Bulletin, a monthly
geologic science journal and the Explorer, a monthly newspaper;
sponsors continuing education schools, seminars and field trips; holds
conventions; publishes special geologic books and materials; and
provides geologic information to the general public.
The membership ranges from undergraduate college students to
independent geologists and chairmen of the boards of major
corporation.
AGU is devoted to the advancement of the understanding of Earth and
Space for the benefit of humanity. Established in 1919, it encompasses
all of the geophysical sciences, including the Earth, atmospheric,
oceanic, hydrologic, space and planetary sciences. AGU serves over
55,000 members in more than 135 countries. Its aims are to promote
scientific study by sponsoring meetings and conferences, publishing
research, and providing a forum for coordination of research efforts.
AGU publishes 14 journal of Geophysical Research, published in 7
sections: Reviews of Geophysics; Water Resources Research;
Geophysical Research Letters; Radio Science; Tectonics;
Paleoceanography; Global Biogeochemical Cycles; Nonlinear Processes
in Geophysics; International Journal of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy;
Earth Interactions (online only); Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems
(online only); Space Weather; The International of Journal of
Research and Applications (online only) and EOS, a weekly newspaper.
AGU also publishes Earth and Space Science books as well as special
publications. Membership is open to all those who are professionally
associated with geophysics.
Membership:
AGU is an individual membership society open to those professionally
engaged in or associated with the Earth and space sciences.
Membership has increased steadily each year, doubling during the
1980s’. Membership currently exceeds 55,000, of which about 20% are
students. AGU attempts to encourage the broadest possible
membership by maintaining individual membership dues at the lowest
possible level.
ASFE/The Best People on Earth was established in 1969 and today
represents some 300 geoprofessional, environmental, and civil
engineering Member Firms that employ approximately 80,000 individuals
worldwide, as well as full-time faculty, selected consultants to Member
Firms, and individual professionals employed by organizations not
eligible for ASFE firm membership. ASFE provides programs, services,
229
and materials to help Member Firms enhance their business practices,
with emphasis on project manager training. ASFE’s long-range objectives
are to: create/propagate programs in areas such as risk management,
professionalism, loss prevention, financial management, human
resources management, client attraction and retention, employee
attraction and retention, and ethics; improve the environment in which
members practice; enhance the external image of ASFE and its
members; and provide a forum for the discussion of business practice
experience. Membership requirements: Member Firms must offer
geoprofessional, environmental, or civil engineering services in whole or
in part, under the direction of an individual who is by law or enforced
code of ethics required to preserve and protect public health, safety, and
welfare. Dues are based on a firm’s gross annual receipts. ASFE
sponsors two national meetings/seminars each year, conducts some
25-50 seminars annually, promotes and administers a Peer Review
Program, and publishes a variety of risk management tools designed to
enhance members’ business practices and lower their exposure to
professional liability claims and losses. The Association publishes a
newsletter (NewsLog) six times per year.
