"Muds" led the hall in singing Happy Birthday to "One-L," Loyd Carney. Mr. Kelley opined that Carney was older that Methuselah, because they sang Happy Birthday to him every day for two years. Jack Cashing was a member of that class. When he got up to take his pokes at Mr. Kelley, he told of taking two years of algebra - Algebra I twice. Finally he passed it on the third try. By the time he reached his senior year, he was done with Mr. Kelley. - Jack was the photo editor for the yearbook. Then the class advisors both resigned, and guess who became the new advisor Mr. Kelley. "All these years, I've called him Mr Kelley. Well, tonight, it's Frankie. Hi, Frankie! How are ya, Krankie?!" Mr. Kelley has always had a reputation for unorthodox methods of recruiting students to run in his track program. Fbr many years, there was a large cut-out of a kid in a track uniform hanging on the bulletin board in the back of his class- room. Next to it would be a sign reading, "Want to pass math?" Heidi (Wiberg) Hastings told how she approached Mr. Kelley, wanting to run track, 50-yard sprints. He said she would have to run cross country for train- ing. And then winter track, only there were no girls run- ning winter track, and no 50- yard dash. He was.a strict chaperone. If kids went down to the Town Park at night to . . . whatever, Mr. Kelley might be there to send them home. "It was worse than the police!" Hastings said. "What other teacher would do that? He was so committed!" Hastings said she saw him wring a couple of earlobes. "Not pretty!" Riding on* the team bus to a track meet, she had sat down in the back of the bus. But before the trip started, Mr. Kelley ordered her to sit up front with him. He wasn't having any part of boys sitting with girls on his bus. On the night of the senior prom Mr. Kelley's car broke down. But when students o," f ered help, he wouldn't allow •it. "Tie, kids had to get home, because they had a track meet the next day! Mr. Kelley hated kids having cars, Hastings said. If they had a car, they had to work to sup- port it, and that meant they couldn't run track. Irene Sharp Brennan said she preceded him as a teacher at Wilmington High by 14 years. When they built the high school, everything from the old school ended up in Room 103, which had two closets. But it was her room — until they hired Mr. Kelley. "And you know who won," she said. She said she offered to make him a wedding cake if he ever married. She's been waiting for 34 years. Shem Krey spoke "on behalf of a ton of Kreys." He said he didn't have Mr. Kelley in math or track, but remembered sitting in a Latin class with him, a memory which escaped everyone, including Mr. Kelley. "You taught me what agricola meant — a farmer, a man out standing in his field," said Krey. "And you are a man out- standing in your field." Eleanor Demos said she saw Mr. Kelley in church. He said he was making a deal with God. If you let my team win, I'll go to church, he said. But then, the team lost, and he would still go to church. When she asked him why, he said he was there arguing with Him, because they lost. Television reporter David Boeri said he's covered a lot of mobsters in his work. But this is the guy they call the Godfather of Track. He voted to the right of Attilla the Hun. Boeri told of Miss Murphy playing some Confederate music for a U.S. history class. The door from the next class- room opened, and Mr. Kelley marched in with his class, with everyone carrying U.S. flags. Ashley Burns was thrown into the air and was caught by four other cheerleaders during the afternoon practice. Witnesses state that Burns did not hit the floor. "She landed, she didn't feel good," Tewksbury Police Chief Alfred Donovan said during a press conference. "We're not sure what her injuries are or whether she had a pre-existing condition." Burns was up and talking following the incident, but was complaining of discomfort in the abdominal area. She thought that she had had the wind knocked out of her. Her condition deteriorated quickly in an ambulance as it trans- ported her to Saints Memorial Hospital in Lowell. Authorities are investigating the incident, but stated that It appears to have been an acci- dent. "It was a normal practice, nothing out of the ordinary," Donovan said. "We're being told that there were absolutely no trampolines involved. This was just a case of somebody landing wrong and sustaining an injury." Burns was preparing for her freshman year at Medford Vocational-Technical High School. We are not going to make a further comment until we get further information. QawttiMtm fflfS SP0ITS WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 10, 2005 E-MAIL: JAMIE@Y0URT0WNCRIER.COM Women's Olympic hopefuls Great hockey talent comes to Ristuccia Bv DAN IGO Sports Correspondent Some of the most talented women's hockey players in the country have come together at Ristuccia Rink in Wilmington in preparation for the 2006 Olympic Trials. These women range in age from high school standout to Olympic veteran, but that such a practice can come together is a testament on how far woman's hockey has come along in the last decade. This program is run by Paul Kennedy, a Woburn resident. Kennedy is the head coach of Cushing Academy's girls, hockey team, and has been involved in the sport for more than 15 years. He says that he started this program up because he noticed that women's players generally have trouble getting ice time. "There no place for (girls) to play," he said. "I just started it up to get them to just keep playing." Kennedy started the program a year ago. He saw the success of it and decided with his daughter Courtney to get all the elite college players together into one place. "We wanted to put one thing together for elite high school players, college players, and national players to come play at a high level," Courtney Kennedy said. Paul Kennedy says it wasn't difficult to get the word out. Some players are from the local area, but they also come all the way from Michigan. "We spread it through word of mouth," he said. "People know'me. Last year we had forty players and this year we have forty plus. They do it six hours a week for ten weeks. That's a lot of ice. Most people don't do that." Many of the participants in this program were on the 2002 Olympic Team that took home the silver medal in Salt Lake City. Shelley Looney was a part of that team and the 1998 team that won gold in Nagano. She said that women's hockey really took off after the 1998 team won gold. "You saw a big jump after the '98 Olympics. Hockey is very addicting when you get to watch it." Courtney Kennedy says that the times have really changed since she was a young player. "There are a lot more girls playing on girls teams. When I was growing up I only played on boys teams." Julie Chu was also a member of the 2002 team. At the age of 19, she was one of the youngest players on the team. Now 23 and a star at Harvard, she says that the 2002 Olympics was an event she never will forgetf "It was one of the greatest experiences of my life," she said. "It's an honor to be able to represent your country." The 2006 Olympics will be played in Torino, Italy. The two favorites are considered to be the U.S. and Canada. "Canada is our big rival," Chu said. "We've been bat- tling them since 1990. We really push each other every year to make sure we don't become complacent." However, as women's hockey becomes more of global sport, other countries have started to jump into the pic- ture more and more. "It's always been U.S. vs. Canada, but Finland and Sweden are creeping closer," said Jamie Hagerman, a for-, mer Harvard player. So what is the future of women's hockey? Will it go the way of women's softball, which just got dropped from the 2008 Olympics? Or will it go the way of women's basketball, which has many rec- ognizable players and coaches and has its own profession- al league? Kathleen Kauth, a former player at Brown hoping to make the 2006 team, hopes it's the latter. "I would hope it would be something like basketball," she said. "I would hope to get more good coaches like Paul. The top level talent is good but there just isn't any depth." Paul Kennedy also hopes that women's hockey keeps expanding, and believes the answer begins with women taking the reigns over from the men. "Women's hockey has been the fastest growing part of USA Hockey. I'm hoping it keeps going that way. The trick is to get the right women involved. You got to get the guys out and the girls involved, and I think we're a few years away from that." Woburn resident Courtney Kennedy was among many of the very talented women hockey players who were on hand during last Thursday night's skate at Ristuccia Exposition Center. There's the green grass, the dirt of the infield, the outfield wall, dugouts and of course the friendships. And there may be no friendship more true than that of the one forged on the diamond. Simply ask Anthony Morlani and Ron Wallace. The two recently traveled to Sarasota for the AAU National Championship Tournament as a part of the U14 AAU Lightning. This squad was last year's national champions in the U13 category, and they were very close in pulling off an unprecedented repeat of their title. Although they placed fourth, it was still a very special ten days in the Sunshine State. The Lightning were scheduled to play ten games in ten days. However, due to rainy condi- tions, many games were post- poned and carried over to the next day. "A few times we had to play two games in one day. It got a little hectic," said Morlani, a Wilmington resident. In the first.pool, the Lightning were extremely efficient as they cruised to wins over the Charlotte Pirates, the'Mazda Mets, and another Southeastern team. In those three games, the Lightning won by a combined score of 30-5. Things would become much more difficult for the Lightning as time took it's course. In the second pool, the Lightning lost their first game, 10-4, to the North Florida Hurricanes. They needed to win the next two games to stay in the tournament. As all great teams do, the Lightning rose to the occasion to make it to the Sweet 16. They defeated the Central Pennsylvania Capitals 12-1 and then team South % Carolina 7-3. In the Sweet 16, it was a do-or- die situation. They won in a nail-biter, 5-4, over the St. Petersburg Stingers. The victory propelled them into the Elite 8. In a very thrilling game, the Lightning pulled off an amazing come- from-behind victory over the New jersey Titans. This win secured a spot in the Final Four, the second consecutive year the Lightning had made it that far. Unfortunately, they would not go any further as they fell to Team Easton (Orlando), 6-2. Things would not improve in the constellation game as they suffered a tough loss to the West Florida Young Guns, 6-5. "The main goal coming into this year was to win the championship," said Morlani. "Last year, it was to make it to the Sweet 16. It was almost disap- pointing this year because our expectations were so high." "We went in thinking repeat," said Wallace. "But we knew it would be really hard to win it twice." Seeing as how it was the second year they had traveled to play nationally, they had differ- ent feeling towards approach- ing the tournament. y "We knew what tp expect coming in," said Wallace. "I wasn't as nervous as last time." Morlani made one observa- tion very quickly into the tour- ney. "This year the kids were a lot bigger. Last year we were bigger, but I guess they caught up to us. These kids were big, fast, and they hit the ball well. And we saw a few that threw fairly well to, with good off-speed stuff." On a personal level, both saw improvement in the statistical categories. Wallace pitched a gem against the St. Pete Stingers, the team the Lightning beat to capture last year's national title. On the mound, Wallace was a rock for the team, but in the batter's box Wallace was satisfied as well. "I hit pretty well for average, better than last year," said Wallace. As for Morlani, he was the starting centerfielder but had to take over as catcher when the normal starting catcher dislocated his fingertip and had to sit out two games. Morlani was flawless behind the plate, and was great in center when it was time to resume his normal position. At the plate, he batted .400 and his play earned him Ail-American, All-Tournament honors, as chosen by the coaches in the Elite 8. Life in Sarasota was much more lax than that of life in Myrtle Beach, where last year's national tournament was held. Last time, they had to stay with the coaches at a dif- ferent location, and there was minimal interaction with family. There is no doubt being with the family raised the comfort level among the players, and comfort always pays off on the field. The players come from all dif- ferent towns, but the bonds cre- ated on the field far exceed that of town boundaries. "The chemistry is great," said Morlani, "We are all best friends and we hang out off the field." Wallace had an almost identi- cal response stating, "We are all best friends. We hang out together and chemistry really isn't a factor. This is something I'm going to remember for the rest of my life." ■ '■
