THE FIRST TO: With Mike Esposlto at the bottom of the pile. In
the Billerlca game. Esposlto went over In the first period tor this TD
on a plunge from the one yard line.
The Wilmington Wildcats are
going to have to play superb foot-
ball, next Thursday morning, II
they are to repeat their champ-
ionship of the Merrlmack Valley
Conference, won last year.
Dracut Is to all Intents and pur-
poses tied with Wilmington, but It
still has a slight edge, to win the
crown, on percentage points.
Tewksbury, Wilmington's tradi-
tional rival for the Thanksgiving
game, will probably be Just a little
harder nut to crack than Dracut
will have with Methuen.
Last Saturday's game left Wil-
Wilmington, while It handily de-
feated Billerlca 21 to 7, still could
have lost the game until the final
quarter. It was anybody's game
until that time.
Sophomore Mike Esposlto did
air the scoring for the Wilmington
Wildcats, and defensively It was
Capt Eddie Glllls and Ray DiCecca
who won the honors.
Esposlto started off with an In-
first quarter, and five plays later
the Wilmington Wildcats were at
was unable to make a PAT.
Blllerlca's turn to play at the
one yard line came In the second
quarter, when It almost marched
to a TD, but the Wilmington line
held, and when Wilmington took
over It marched in turn to the
Billerlca line, and scored In the
last of the second quarter.
Billerlca marched again In the
third, again to the one yard line.
When Wilmington got the ball there
was a fumble, at the six yard line,
which Billerlca recovered and Bll-
lerlca's Dane Clark went over tor
the TD. A conversion brought the
score to 13 to 7.
It was Eddie Glllls who set up
the Wilmington team tor Its final
score, as the Wilmington team
traveled nearly the length of the
field. He ended up with the ball
on the nine yard line, from where
Esposlto took over. He plunged
over from the three yard line.
The conversion was to be a kick,
but Esposlto bad to run for It in-
stead. Re made the goal line,
bringing the score to a final 21-7
Selectmen's Meeting
There was a stir on Monday
night, at the Selectmen's Meeting
when some of the residents of
Burlington Avenue and Dell Drive
arrived en force to talk with the
Selectmen about a young boy who
had had an accident last week, when
he collided with a car on his way
home from school. The air was
tense with emotion, while the res-
idents, led by Fred Arsenault of
Dell Drive, recounted their tra-
vails over the years, about the
widening of Burlington Avenue, and
how It was done by the town against
their wishes.
The Selectmen were told that
cars were speeding on Burlington
Avenue at 60 to 80 miles an hour.
(According to police records,
the lady who was driving the car
with which the six year old boy
collided said she was traveling at
30 miles an hour, and the boy had
struck her car. Ed).
The final solution or outcome
was that crosswalks will be paint-
ed at the Dell Drive Intersection
of Burlington Avenue, and that
Chief of Police Paul Lynch would
have radar patrols for speeding
cars, and would patrol the area
carefully, although Lynch did not
feel that this was the main cause
of the accident.
Earlier a hearing was held for
the Reading Municipal Light about
a pole on woburn Street. John
Whitney, an abuttor, appeared to
object, since, he said, the pole
Last weekend, I had a call from
Mrs Parent, on Clifton Street, the
gal that lost the son In Vietnam not
very long ago, and she made me
fee real good...She wanted to tell
me that Mike Luongo really de-
serves a medal for Ms combat
It seems that he and David Parent
another fourteen year old son were
building tree houses in the woods
on Clifton Street. A tree fell on
David. Mike had to pull the tree
off David's leg, stop the bleeding
as best he could, and carry Dave
home so that he could be taken
to the hospital, where he Is with
his leg In a cast, after Intra-
venous feedings, and operations
to get the bark out of his leg
and setting of the fracture. Con-
gratulations to Mike...Those are
the kind of boys that Wilmington
has! Our heartfelt congratulations
and thanks, Mike, and many people
are proud to say they know you.
This Is great! And meanwhile,
you young chicks, Dave will be
wanting to hear from you...He is
in a cast from his hip to his
toes where his leg Is fractured
and will be for three more
months. He Is In Choate Hospi-
tal in Woburn. Cards out and to
him, and hurry and get well, Dave
Glad you have a friend like Mike!
(Boy, those docs certainly will
be In practice with the casts on
legs at Choate...Just from prac-
ticing on Wilmington boys, eh what)
Now, all you folks do know
that you have to register firearms
with the local police. Did you
know that the Federal Gun Control
Act of 1968 established a 30 day
period for the registration of cer-
tain weapons? These aren't the
regular firearms, but sawed off
shotguns and rifles, automatic
guns, like machine guns and pis-
tols, any guns with mufflers and
silencers and all Deactivated War
Trophies. Many families have
these trophies, like hand grenades
etc There will be no penalty if
the gun or trophy is registered on
or before December 1, 1968.
You register by filing Form 4467
In duplicate with the Director of
Alcohol and Tobacco Tax Division
of IRS. As a special convenience
Room 1911-D, Federal Bldg in
Boston, and Room 306, PO Bldg
In Lowell will be open every Sat-
urday In November and also on
Sunday, Dec 1, which is the final
registration dates. No fee Is
charged for filing.
After December 1, it will be
unlawful to possess an unregis-
tered firearm. By the way, if
your War Trophy is not deacti-
vated, or you're not sure about it
IRS will make arrangements to
have the weapon Inspected and
deactivated, free of charge, and
CARPET TREATMENT
A common report, by the Wll-
New York, last Saturday Is that
the Staten Island fans had the same
repeatedly.
'Those Wilmington boys are well
disciplined!'
It was a wonderful experience
for the thirty boys who went to
Staten Island, and the Town Crier
Is using the account of the Staten
Island Advance, to report the game
as It comes from someone not
biased In Wilmington's favor.
The boys returned bom Sunday
evening, after a full weekend, to
find parents and friends awaiting
them In the High School cafeteria.
They had had an escort from
Route 93, Fire Engine with siren
screaming, and a Police Cruiser
with blue light flashing. Selectman
James Mlcell and Rep. Fred F.
Cain were among the greeters.
500 chilly spectators on hand,
which dob was the kingpin.
The Chargers did all and more
than could be expected from a squad
of 12 and IS year-olds.
Parlaying a variety of of tensive
formations with crisp blocking and
fine signal calling by quarterback
Steve Coursey, the visitors from
Massachusetts scored the first
time they got their bands on the
hull,
Coursey, working from a
straight T- formation sent his full-
back Ray Noel (Mark Nelson-Ed)
and half-backs Dennis Sullivan and
Richard Howlett, bursting through
gaping boles In the line.
Eight plays later, Howlett went
up the middle from the one yard
line and Wilmington led 6-0.
The Chargers threatened three
times more In the first half, but a
dropped pass and a fine defensive
play by Ken Sullivan of the Colo-
nial Federal prevented touchdowns
(After shredding the Colonial
front line with running plays,
Coursey fired a long pass to How-
lett, who was totally unguarded.
The ball, however, was under-
thrown and a TD was missed.
Sullivan, a linebacker, averted
another Charger score when he
broke through the line and nailed
Coursey tor a loss on the Colonial
eight-yard line.
The Chargers drove down field
tor an easy TDand PAT at the start
of the second half, and It looked
like a rout was in the making. But
at this point the locals came to life.
Thomas Roche and Sullivan took
turns toting the p'g«H" downfleld
tor gains totalling 20 yards, and
then Sullivan broke through the
middle, cut to his left, and streaked
2- yards tor a touchdown.
The PAT failed, but Colonial
seemed to be back In the ballgame.
Those hopes quickly faded after a
couple of offensive series, though,
as Colonial was unable to move.
And, when Wilmington tacked on
Its third TD early to the fourth
period, there was no doubt that the
final score would be a true indi-
cation of the game.
Sullivan (offense) and Mike Be-
mud (defense) received the Most
Valuable Player awards for Colo-
nial, while Howlett (offense) and
Coursey (defense) gatod top honors
Town Engineer Arthur Harding
discussed street Improvement
programs he would like to see done.
He told the board that he had had
'many many' requests for new
street maps. He also had requests
tor new street lists, and had pre-
pared a typewritten copy which he
believed to be accurate.
The board received a bank book
for $12000 for the bonding of the
new Wlldwood Estates, off Wlld-
wood Street.
The board approved of a change
In drainage plans for the new Ben-
son Park, off Lake Street. The
change Is planned to drain water
from a low spot. In the rear of
some of the Lake Street homes
bordering the new development.
A letter from Atty. Fred Co-
rum reminded the board that the
firm of Vokey & Parsons had de-
posited a bank book, at the time
It took over a section of Barbara
Avenue, In North Wilmington three
years ago, and the money had not
been returned.
Glllls recalled that the then Town
Engineer had had a report, and had
objected to some of the loamlng
done. He promised to look up the
report and made a report to the
Planning Board at Its next meeting.
You chicks at the High School
will want to know that one of
your favorite cats is out
at the Great Lakes Naval
Training Center, but will be
back in Boston in time for the
holidays with his 'Road Runner'
as he Is going to be assigned
, to the 'Albany' that Is being re-
surrected in the shipyard... Yup
you're right, and if you haven't
guessed by now, it's Kenny Robblns
from 9 Arllne Avenue....
Nice going, Ralph Zwicker, and
the Group...The Parade was great
on Monday ...and the League of
Women Voters really had their
courage with them with the straw
hats and the cold weather...that is
showing the old spirit, though.
Wilmington is really blooming
The Pop Warner kids were as cute
as they could be, and the new uni-
forms on the color guard were
something...and the music was
good...What happend to Sterling...
George and Jim were marching
away, while tossing lollypops at
the kiddies, but no Chief...Maybe
he was snowbound in Portland?
Tonight, get yourself down to
the Barrows Auditorium at the
High school at 7:30 to see the
film and hear the discussion on the
California Grape Issue...The
film is 'Decision in Delano* and
the Youth Group for Human Rights
are putting it on free. Please
get down there and hear both sides
to the question. Hear that
DeMoulas has stopped selling
California grapes, after a contact
and explanation by the represen-
tatives from this group...Con -
gratulatlons to you kids for your
sincerity and your efforts to help
the Grape Pickers. Hope some of
the grownups take a clue from
your Social Concern and get
Interested in these human Issues.
The kids also visited a synagogue
this week for a service... How many
of you have been to one?
Remember now., .the High School
Auditorium tonight, Nov 21, at 7:30
for the movie and discussion.
Did you know that a birdie told
me that the area around the flagpole
at the Common Is now kept clean
by the Cadette Girl Scout Troop
from the Congregational Church in
charge of Mrs Jean Foley...wlsh
all kids groups would take one
area in town to do this to...the
Post Office lot and the area be-
tween the p.o and fire station is
somethlig elsel And it belongs
to the Town! You kids are Just
great.
And...Doris and Loretta from
the No Wll Pharm ran the penny
sale at St Thomas Turkey Whist
on Tuesday nite, and really cleaned
up...When we were In the lunch
counter this week, they had Otis
Maitre deelng while he was eating
a hamburger, Lionel had bung the
sandwich signs for them...and
those two chicks were selling any
kind of sandwich to anybody, with
plenty of laughter, and getting
away with it, with standing room
onlyl You better watch that, Harry
Vallee will be stealing them as
the comedy team shortly!
Temple Shalom, Emeth of Wo-
burn at 14 Green Street held a
meeting on Friday, Nov 15 at
8 pm with Reverend John Kldder
the Minister of the Lutheran Ch
of the Redeemer delivering the
Sermon. Oneg Shabbot (Refresh-
ments) followed the service...On
Sat, Nov 16, the Couples Club held
a game night at the Temple and
Sunday School Is being held on
Sunday morning for the children
of the Members.(And Pm sorry
Nat Belofsky that this wasn't in
ahead of time, will do better next
time I)
Guess that the Sons of Italy
really had a wingdlng at their
Calendar Party last Saturday...
This chlk wants to thank them
all for their kind Invitation, but
she has had one wicked time with
shaking this flu and its complica-
tions...Had it for six weeks, and
still only now with one foot out
of Dr John's office...Here's hoping
it has worn out, and the Hong Kong
doesn't catch up with me....Sorry
bout that, S of L, and I really wanted
to go...
Now, on Thanksgiving morning
at 8:30 am at the Baptist Church
there Is a 'Come as you are' Ser-
vice, sponsored by the Ecumenical
Council Youth and all are welcome
no matter what your creed...So,
that Is the time to gather, before
the Pancakes, and the football game
to give thanks for our country, and
those boys away fighting for us,
and all the blessings there are to
being an American!
See you there I
Christmas
could be
Mfeybe this year you wanted to do very special things for very special
people. But you don't have much spare cash.
So Momma gets perfume instead of the dress coat she "just has to
have" And Tommy, who'd begged Santa for a bike, settles for a football
and some toy soldiers. You buy your brother Joe a $5 pipe instead of the
imported briar he's always wanted, but wouldn't buy for himself.
Why not do it right? Make next Christmas special. Open a Middlesex
Bank Christmas Club, and deposit the amount you decide on regularly.
You'll make a lot of people very happy, come next Christmas.
