VIII. Research Interests
Research is on nonviolent rhetorics, that is, persuasive artifacts designed by leaders and
members of peacebuilding and nonviolent organizations and social movements. Study areas
are interdisciplinary and feature research on rhetorical artifacts such as speeches, letters,
books, music, web sites, museum displays, visual rhetoric with suasory images such as films,
videos, television shows and photographs. Supporting areas of research include, but are not
limited to, political rhetoric, globalization rhetoric, rhetoric of nonviolent social movements
such as the civil rights movement and the environmental justice movement, and
contemporary social justice rhetoric.
IX. Research Projects and Grants
Research Project
From 2009 to 2012 my partially grant funded research project has built on my
interdisciplinary approach to conducting feminist rhetorical criticism within a peace and
justice framework. This research project encompassed writing articles on the individual
women who have won the Nobel Peace prize between 1905 to 2011. Also, discrete published
articles are being revised into book chapters to form a cohesive book on the rhetoric of
women Nobel Peace laureates. This research project emphasizes the crucial interrelationships
among women’s rhetorics, international and intercultural rhetorics, as well as rhetorics of
peace and nonviolence.
