Year of the dragon Message from the Organiser Master Michael Tan - Tan’s Taekwondo It is with great pleasure that I produce this publication as a celebration of another successful Gold Coast Open. This being the Year of the dragon, was one of our best competitions. Numbers exceeded expectations, with a total of 460 competitors attending the 3 rd GC Open. Players came from all States of Australia. We also had 2 international teams from NZ and PNG. There were many international, national and state champions attending this year. Theresa Tona who will be representing PNG in London used the event as Olympic preparation. Chynea Lang and Aaron Wain picked up the memorial awards for best sparring competitors while Justin Patterson won the memorial trophy for the most outstanding Poomse competitor. I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank Jo and Steve Newmann who marshaled all competitors in such an efficient way to enable us to finish on time. And who can forget Paul Pomerenke for being the MC and providing such an entertaining call on proceedings. Organised by Tan’s Taekwondo the event has grown from a club championship to what it is today. The 1 st Tans invitational championship was held in 1992 at the Southport High School. Sparring, Poomse and a Jump kick competition was held similar to the format we have today. Participating Clubs from the QTA were, Muirs, Dynamic, Parmleys, Beenleigh. Events also included a demonstration competition which was won by Muirs Taekwondo. At the 7 th Tans Open, New Zealand under the organization - TUNZ entered for the first time. NZ has been to every Tans / Gold Coast Open ever since. Olympians such as Logan Campbell got their international start at the Tans Open. In 2008, the event was expanded to 2 days as we could no longer fit the program into one. Over the years, there have been many interstate teams that have travelled back to enjoy this competition. The Gold Coast Open In 2010, we announced a name change to represent the expansion of the competition. The Gold Coast Open, also promoted the region where it has made its home and reputation. The first Gold Coast Open saw substantial increase in interstate clubs. Significantly, the black belt division’s were heavily contested. Divisions of 8 – 12 black belts from all states are comparable to national selection competitions. 3 rd Gold Coast Open Page 3
