President’s Message
Dear Fellow Stoneleigh
Residents,
Since the leaves have
changed colors and the
holidays are fast approaching,
it is worth reflecting on
another wonderful year in
Stoneleigh. In addition to
living in such a great neighborhood, we
have much to be thankful for. I would
like to personally thank all those who
organized such events as the Labor Day
Fair, Oktoberfest, Kids Try-Athlon, the
Stoneleigh Stampede, the Halloween
Parade, and much more. A special
“thank you” goes to the Stoneleigh
Citizens on Patrol, for giving of their
time to keep an eye on the
neighborhood. I would ask that you
please consider volunteering for the
Stoneleigh COP, either by walking,
Community Calendar
biking, or driving the neighborhood.
The COP really makes a huge
difference.
Thanks to all those who pay their
annual dues and donate to the general
fund for neighborhood upkeep and
planting of trees, the neighborhood
once again ends the year in solid fiscal
condition. As a reminder, we will be
holding the Association annual meeting
on Thursday, December 10 th , at 7:00
pm, at the Stoneleigh Elementary
School.
I wish you all a wonderful holiday
season and I would like to thank
everyone on the community, pool, and
social committees once again for the
many hours of volunteer work -- it truly
was a pleasure working with all of you.
Warmest Regards,
Jon Carpenter
Please mark your calendar now for these important events: More details will be available on the
Stoneleigh email circuit.
Hayden White Wins ITA South/Southeast Regional Singles Title
Fredericksburg, Va. – Washington and Lee
University first-year student Hayden White
claimed the championship singles title on
Monday afternoon at the Intercollegiate Tennis
Association (ITA) Division III South/Southeast
Region Championships hosted by Mary
Washington University. White posted a 6-0
record over the three-day event, outlasting a
field of 64 singles players. On Monday,
October 5, he defeated Haverford first-year
student Kevin Caulfield in the semifinals by a
score of 6-1, 7-6 (4), before knocking off Johns
Hopkins senior David Maldow in the
championship match by a score of 6-2, 6-2. ….From W & L sports website October 5, 2009
Hayden, who resides on Marlborough Road with parents Beth and Patrick White and sister Chelsea, is a
June 2009 graduate of Towson High. Beth writes, “Hayden was attracted to Washington & Lee because of
its academic reputation. Despite being recruited by several Division I programs, he chose W & L because he
knew that he might be able to play high in the line-up and ultimately have a shot at gaining All-American
status. He was obviously delighted that he was able to acquire the All American title just 30 days into his
freshman year by capturing the regional conference title in early October, after defeating John's Hopkins
number 1 player and top-seeded David Maldow in straight sets. He hopes to be able to repeat it, but knows
the competition is difficult .
“After winning the regional tournament, Hayden went onto compete against the top 8 players in the
Division III singles bracket at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Small College
Championships held at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Alabama. Despite being the only
freshman in the elite 8 competition, Hayden was able to earn a fourth place finish.
“Hayden was the third highest ranked recruit coming into Division III tennis this past year. He's looking
forward to the spring season at Washington & Lee when team competition starts.”
Reflections of Fall
I gaze out my window at the majestic oak tree across the street and marvel
that it began its life as a small, insignificant acorn. The squirrels are busily
gathering the acorns that will sustain them as they endure a long, harsh winter.
Nearby the leaves on the trees are bursting with exuberant color, shades of golden and
crimson, nature’s paint box at work! No longer green, the leaves seem to be saying a
glorious farewell as whirling and twisting, they tumble to the ground, brightening our
lawns and sidewalks.
As winter approaches, other trees are stripped completely bare of leaves, exposed. But
my oak tree, with miraculous strength, withstanding fierce wind storms, even when the
whole tree is encased in sparkling ice, holds on tenaciously to its clusters of now brown
and curled leaves.
We see these trees as ―lifeless,‖ but the work of preparing for the next springtime has
already begun. And our hearts will be delighted once again to see lovely green leaf
corsages popping out of lifeless bark, unfurling their beauty for all to see!
4 Fall, 2009 The Stoneleighite
The 2009 pool season ended
September 13 th . I hope everyone enjoyed
themselves and I appreciate the many
compliments I received over the course
of the summer.
I'm happy to report that the pool repair
we authorized over last winter was
successful. The water looked crystal
clear all summer and our staff did a nice
job keeping the property clean.
The Sharks continued to dominate the
Free State league that they compete in
and put together another undefeated
season. Thanks to George Kennedy and
his assistants for their hard work with
our swimmers.
The Synchronized Swimmers gave us
another great performance, thanks to all
of the dedicated coaches and the girls
Pool Committee Report
who participated. The Labor Day fair
was a huge success once again. Thanks
to Dean and Nicole Johnson and the
many volunteers that gave their time to
this annual tradition.
Finally, I want to thank the 2009 pool
committee for their contributions, and
ask that you please thank them as well
when you see them: Peter Bulkley
(treasurer), Keith Voss (grounds and
maintenance), Ellen Roberts (minutes
and event updates), Matt Bollinger
(social), Gwen Bowie and Kelly Reif
(non-resident memberships), Dave
Dorsey (resident memberships), Shelly
Roseborough (Sharks liaison), and Mike
Schuh (Synchronized Swim liaison).
They have given a lot of their time over
the past two years and a few will
continue to serve the pool committee.
The incoming chairperson and pool
committee members for 2010 will be
announced at the annual meeting in
December. I will also give a re-cap of
the season at that time and talk about
some future considerations being
discussed for the pool. Please try to
attend this meeting, especially if you
have suggestions.
Dumpster Days Are Once Again A Huge Success Thanks
to the efforts of several neighbors, Dumpster Day this year
was as much about keeping things out of the landfill as putting
them in. Carol Newill arranged for THE LOADING DOCK to
collect usable building materials. Collected items go to their
“store” to be sold at reasonable costs to homeowners. She
also arranged for VELOCIPEDE BIKE PROJECT to collect
bikes that are refurbished and then used in the Baltimore
area to keep cars off the road. Bernie Donnenenberg
collected clothing, toys and household items for Baltimore
County SOCIAL SERVICES. Three trucks full of electronics
were taken to the Recycling Center of the Baltimore County
Waste Management Center. Chris Iler and other Scouts
collected Aluminum for Boy Scout Troup 102. Other metal
was sorted into a dumpster specifically for recycling metal at
the County’s White Marsh center. Three additional dumpsters
were filled with non-metal bulk trash.
Kathleen Williams, Carol Newill, Paul Shamp, a volunteer, with Brough Schamp on top of the world.
Here’s Brough with the truck.
Stoneleigh’s annual Dumpster Day is sponsored by the Committee
for Greening and Recycling. We colleccted over $500 in donations
to support the shade tree planting program. Brough Schamp
schedules the dumpsters at no charge to the community through
Baltimore County, and also obtained the special permit to recycle
the large number of electronic items. All this couldn’t happen
without the help of many volunteers. My Google Group email
generated lots of volunteers. Your help is critical to making this
successful and it is much appreciated.
Traffic Calming The Maryland Legislature passed enabling
legislation for speed cameras to be placed in school and construction zones. Baltimore County passed the
necessary legislation and speed cameras will be installed before this Stoneleighite is in your hands.
There will be a camera on Dumbarton Road, but not on Regester in this first installation phase.
Historic District Tax Credits These tax credits are still funded, but in light of current economic
conditions, they could be eliminated, so if you are planning work, I would encourage you to make
application soon. This is just a reminder that because Stoneleigh was added to The National Register of
Historic Places as a Historic District in November 2003, residents are eligible for tax incentives against
their state income tax for approved work done to their homes. Baltimore County enacted legislation
making additional credits available. State credits of 20% of the cost of approved work are applied to
State income tax. County credits of an additional 20% are applied to property taxes. Applications must
be submitted to the State and County and approved by them before work begins or the credits will
not be given. I have compiled booklets with information intended to assist homeowners in determining
whether their planned work qualifies for the tax incentives and to provide a guide to the necessary forms
and data. If you would like a copy of the booklet, please call me at 410-299-7011, or email me at
Stoneleigh Mixed Bowling League By Nancy Talbott
The 37 th consecutive year of
Stoneleigh duckpin bowling is off to
another great start. We started out with
13 teams, but not full teams. So it was
decided to disband the 13th team and fill
in the missing spots. Six new people
joined us this year. We have several who
are returning after a year off. It is a great
way to meet new people, have fun and
even get in a little aerobic exercise. All
ages are welcome to bowl – we have
players as young as 22 and as young as
92!
The competition is tough already with
some high statistics on the books. Dave
Rittmeyer has a high set of 444 and Diana
Rush has a 361. For high game, we have
Dave Rittmeyer with a 171 and Kathy
Bacon with a 139. Team averages are
fairly close this year, which makes for
some exciting games. The team in first
place at the moment is Team #4, The
Simpsons, with a 17-7 win/loss record.
Team members are Meg Elseroad,
Natalie Talbott, Steve Baloga and Jay
Damon. The theme for names this year is
cartoons or cartoon characters. Second
place team is #12, Li’l Pigs & Big Bad
Wolf. Team members are Lauren Jaques,
Pat Tatar, Joan Spurrier and Mike Grillo.
High team set is #2, Danger Mice, with a
1335; second place is #4, The Simpsons,
with a 1316.
Our Halloween party will be Thursday,
Oct. 29 th , with costumes being optional.
Everyone brings something tasty to eat or
drink, making for a very interesting
evening. We will have our Christmas
party on Thursday Dec. 17 th . The league
is as much about having a fun time
together with friends and neighbors as it
is about bowling.
If you are looking for something to do
on an otherwise boring Thursday
evening, come join us. No experience
necessary. The season is 16 weeks in the
first half and 16 weeks in the second half,
with a roll-off in the first week or two in
May. If a full time commitment is not
what you want, then we are always
looking for people to be substitutes. You
don’t have to be regular bowler or already
have an average. If you just have to want
to have fun and meet new people, come
on down. Prices are: as a regular bowler
$12.00 and as a substitute $8.50. If you
have any questions, please
feel free to call me, Nancy
Talbott, league secretary,
“Old Scouts” never die. . . they just go to another Camporee!
There are those who claim that the Stoneleigh Boy Scout
Troop 352, of the Baltimore Area Council, enjoyed its heyday
in the mid 1940s to 50s. Those were the days of summer
camps like Camp Howell on the bay, Camp Rodney on the Elk
River in Cecil County, and Broadcreek in Harford County,
learning new skills such as canoeing, cooking, swimming, firebuilding
(without burning the tent down) and in the process
making new friendships that last a lifetime. Some of the
scouts went on to form a sea scout unit, Ship 352, which
opened even more horizons to metropolitan-bred fellows. At
the Labor Day Fair this year, seven “old scouts” got together
to reminisce. Pictured here from the left are Lee Starkey,
WHAT IS AN HERB?
An herb is a plant or part of a plant that is
used for food, medicine, flavoring or scent and
includes a wide variety of plants. Many of these
plants have a long tradition of medicinal uses
that have actually been proven scientifically to
be effective.
Carrie Engel of the Valley View Nursery in
Cockeysville spoke to the Garden Club of
Stoneleigh and discussed the use and growing
patterns of herbs. A small window box or a
strawberry type jar are good ways to have herbs
From the Potting Shed
fresh and handy to the kitchen. Some will grow
in partial shade as well as full sun. Choose annual
or tender perennial herbs for best results
indoors. After the ground freezes, mulch your
herb garden. Use the dried herbs to make oils,
vinegars, potpourris, wreaths, soaps, candles,
etc.
There is an excellent handout at the garden
center about herbs and their care and feeding.
Carrie Engel will be available to answer other
questions. An herb garden close to the kitchen
encourages their use in culinary dishes.

Cub Pack 352 has received several new
scouts since September and a new Tiger
Den has been started. We welcome
Maggie Tindall as our new Den leader for
that den! The new scouts, and all of our
returning scouts, have been busy. We
visited the possums, ducks, turtles and
fish of Marshy Point Nature Center earlier
in October. An injured turtle was found
and a recovered turtle was released back
into the wild.
Stoneleigh Cub Scout Pack 352 Update
Later in October, we had a family
event, returning to North Run Farm in
the Greenspring Valley. The scouts
tested themselves in the maze, and
everyone returned! It was a brilliant day and The cubs meet the park ranger at Marshy Point
many pumpkins were found, destined to become
Jack-O-Lanterns for Halloween. Speaking of Halloween, the Pack meeting for October was a Halloween
costume party with entire families attending. A very “scary” time was had by all.
Coming up this fall, the Pack has a Neighborhood Cleanup Day scheduled where our scouts
will clean yards for our neighbors in Stoneleigh, Anneslie and Wiltondale, who might otherwise
might not be able to do the work themselves. This will be followed in December with a trip to
Pickersgill to cheer the residents with our rendition of Christmas carols and other holiday
favorites.
It is never too late to join scouting. If you know of a 1 st -5 th grader who would enjoy scouting,
encourage them to give us a call for more information.
An Important Message From Stoneleigh Citizens On Patrol
By Joe Oddo, Chair and Jeff Walen, Incoming Chair
Jon Carpenter, President of the Stoneleigh Community
Association, spoke recently with Chief Jim Johnson of the
Baltimore County Police Department, who stated that there has
been a number of break-ins in the area of Wiltondale, Anneslie,
and Idylewylde. He is asking that all residents be aware of
their surroundings and use caution when securing their homes.
Please keep your doors locked, garages secured, and automobiles locked. The police are
Chief Johnson urged common sense. Leave lights on in your home when you are not there.
Leave music on or the TV on as well, as this gives the impression that someone is home. The
break-ins usually occur when people are not home, and have happened during the day and
evening. Do not leave items such as bikes, strollers or lawn equipment unattended outside.
If you see something suspicious, please do not hesitate to call the police. No matter how
insignificant you feel it is, please call. DO NOT CALL THE COP BUILDING OR MEMBERS
OF THE COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION BOARD! CALL THE POLICE AT 911, OR
All COP patrollers, please try to make extra patrols during the fall season if
your schedule permits. Please e-mail me (Jeff Walen, jfwalen@yahoo.com)
with your availability to patrol. We would like to have at least one patroller on
the streets of Stoneleigh during evening hours, particularly from 7pm - 1am.
Kids Halloween Party 2009 by Liz Felsen
We started off with a picture perfect October day for our 2009 Stoneleigh Kids Halloween Party at the pool
parking lot. While enjoying coffee for the mom’s and dads and juice and snacks for the kids, we listened to the
sounds of Yo Ellis Woodard and played some great spooky games!
A new addition to the party this year was “The Bouncy Castle of Doom” and it was a huge hit! All the kids
enjoyed themselves so much that we forgot to do the parade until it was too late! Oh well, there is always next
year! Special thanks to Kathleen Williams for donating the treat bags and a big thank you to all the social
committee members, Cara Denney, Karla Whitman, Karen Fireman, Karen Smith, Amy Godat, Noel Morelli and all
of our super volunteers (husband’s included) who helped out with games, set up and clean up!!!
Holly Hill Nursing & Rehabilitation
Center, located on Stevenson Lane and
backing up to Hatherleigh Road, changed
ownership over a year ago. Not long after its
purchase, the new owners decided to build a
major three story addition to house an
additional 50 residents and modernize the
facility. The addition, as originally proposed
by the Holly Hill board, was going to be only
40 feet from the Stoneleigh residents' homes,
have an above ground storm water
management facility near the residential
property line, and have a suboptimal parking
arrangement. The Stoneleigh residents
affected, as well as the Stoneleigh
Community Association, were very
concerned that this major construction could
have significant negative effects on property
values and impact the quality of life for the
residents. As a result, the directly affected
neighbors, supported by the community
association, retained an attorney to address
issues with the proposed construction.
Over a period of 8 months, Holly Hill and
the affected neighbors negotiated regarding
the proposed addition. The attorney for the
neighbors effectively argued to Holly Hill
that either Holly Hill modify its plans, or the
neighborhood had sufficient legal precedent
to prevent Holly Hill from building its
addition. Consequently, Holly Hill agreed to
all of the following demands from the
residents: the new addition cannot be any
closer than 70 feet from the affected
neighbors' property line, the storm water
management will be underground and sent
out to Stevenson Lane, the parking and
delivery entrances will be toward Stevenson
Lane, and the neighbors will have final
approval over all landscaping plans that abut
their property lines.
From the beginning, Holly Hill has
exhibited a very strong desire to remain good
neighbors to the Stoneleigh Community. Its
efforts to work closely with the affected
neighbors to find a mutually agreeable
solution is evidence of this. The Stoneleigh
Community Association would especially
like to thank Andy Whitman for all his hard
work in protecting the neighborhood's
interests.
If you would like to see a .pdf file with before and after plat maps of the proposed addition, please email a request
Stoneleigh Residence Under Attack from WWII Ghost Airplane
Or, How Neighborly Cooperation Can Lead to a Win For Two Families,
By Jim and Beverly Wallace, 701 Kingston, 410.377.7658
During this past summer, on a hot evening on the back porch, the
Wallaces looked at the rear side of their neighbors' garage and suddenly
saw it as a blank canvas. What if a scene could be painted on the gable
to add interest to the landscape of the back yard? What about an
airplane? Jim Wallace, son of a retired air force officer, suggested a B-
25 bomber coming out of the clouds, somewhat akin to the famous flight
by the Doolittle Raiders depicted in "30 Seconds over Tokyo" during
World War II.
Jim floated the idea by their neighbors, the owners of the garage,
Michelle and Dan Phillips, who both embraced it. Dan, a World War II collector and airplane lover, provided the
ladder and prepped the gable.
Sydney Wallace, an interior design major at the University of Alabama, became the artist. Ignoring the heat,
rain and mosquitoes, she completed the design before going back to school, much to the enjoyment and approval
of the Phillips and the Wallaces.
This was such a gratifying experience for both families and shows what can happen when neighbors accomplish
things together. The Wallaces got to know the Phillips better, learned of common interests, and can now laugh at
their yard being under attack.
