Cross country team continues to please
Lauren Allen, Zack Cuglietta, Karissa Olson
The CV cross country teams, each with a slew of recent
victories, are ready to take on the GSL at Regionals
this month. Leading the boys’ team, Coach Mahoney
has been doing very well at training the boys for the
races and leading them to victory.
Although Mahoney loves winning, he says the best
part of coaching is “getting a kid who was barely able to
run 15 minutes constant to be able to run 3 miles with
ease.”
Mahoney and the team have been doing
outstanding.
“We are second in the state by the coaches’ poll and
have a 5-1 record in GSL,” said Mahoney.
The team gets prepared for the races by limbering up
and relaxing.
“We chill out, listen to music with the team in Mahoney’s
room, or wherever everyone meets,” said senior
Logan Giese, the team’s number one runner.
For most people in cross country, you’d expect the
hardest part would be to run that far and to keep
breathing.
For Giese, the hardest part is “staying on the person,
and not giving up on yourself or the person in front of
you.”
Senior Katy Weisbeck controls the ball like a champ on defense.
When you join the girls’ varsity
soccer team, you’re not just
committing yourself to coming
to practices and playing in
games. Joining the team means
much more. You don’t just have
a team, you have a family.
“We’re all really close. We go
to football games together. We
have spend-overs and team
dinners. We’re like family,” said
senior Katy Weisbeck.
Everyone is proud to be a
part of a team that really sticks
together. So far this season,
the team is doing amazing in
games.
“The season’s going really
well. We’re undefeated, except
for one game that we lost in
pre-season, but that doesn’t
count,” said senior Natalie
Middleton.
From the time that try-outs
began, the team has been
working hard on drills and
improving their skills. The team
works on running, possession,
crossing and shooting drills,
and even scrimmaging. They
give their all in everything they
do.
The players have some advice
for others who would like to
join the team next year and be a
part of the soccer family.
“Work on drills through the
summer and make sure you
come to the training sessions
we have,” said sophomore Kasey
Ames.
“Prepare for the fitness tests,
and don’t stress out,” said Weisbeck.
“Show them all you’ve got
because you never know who
is watching, and play hard,” said
Middleton.
Senior Joslynn Watkins tosses the ball during a girls softball win.
The girls have also been having a very positive season,
with only one GSL loss so far. Only two GSL meets
remain before Regionals on October 27 th .
Brielle Crump is one of two freshmen currently training
on varsity for CV.
“I like it because it’s challenging. It’s built a lot of confidence
in me,” Crump said.
A longtime runner, Crump plans
to continue her cross country
career in the years to come. She
hopes to continue improving her
times and use her talent to help
others along the way.
While Crump is only beginning
her CVHS cross country experience,
senior Skye Sanders is finishing
hers as a team captain.
“It’s weird to be one of the oldest
people on the team because everyone
looks up to you as an example,”
said Sanders.
Though Sanders suffered an
injury to her ACL last year, she still
continues to be a strong runner for
Volleyball season 2012 has been hard work.
From newbies and injuries, to freshies and burning
calories, it’s been completely worth it. Chris
Costy trains his team to perfection; nothing less.
Sequoia Lofton, senior, transferred from West
Valley.
We asked her what it’s like to be on varsity; “Its
way different and the program is a lot more competitive.
Also, Chris is a lot harder,” Lofton says.
Being very satisfied with the season so far, she
says they’ve improved much since their first game
against Shadle.
“Central Valley is way more spirited than West
Valley; I absolutely love the spirit here,” she confessed.
Not letting being new stop her, Lofton proceeded
to play volleyball, not ruining her nine
year streak.
You would think being on varsity as a freshman
would be very intimidating; however, in Meghan
Rockwood’s case, it’s not even close. The girls
treat her just like their best friend and she feels
nothing but super comfortable around all of her
teammates.
CV Bears football has had a great opening to
this season. After losing the first battle, the Bears
bounced back and won four straight. The team
has great passion and chemistry and always work
together to get the job done.
Leading not only the team, but the entire GSL in
kicking, is senior Austin Rehkow.
“It’s the best feeling in the world. It’s GOOD!”
Rehkow said about being the best in the GSL.
Not only did he do work as a kicker, he also
excelled in other positions. He was put on the
defensive team for the first time in his career.
“It felt great. Tackles, interceptions; it was all
fun,” said Rehkow.
For the beginning of the 2012 season, the team
was led by senior quarterback, Scott Hilpert. He is
her team, focused and ready for every race.
“I like to listen to music. It just kind of helps me block
out the world,” said Sanders.
The team as a whole is working hard to make this
season as successful as possible!
The varsity girls cross country team shows the heart in their race.
Bump, Set, Spike!
Robbi Quinn, Brittanie Ontriveros and Lauryn Peterson
“Tia Pau is the one I look up to the most because
she is older and plays the same position as
me; setter. She’s basically like my big sister,” told
Rockwood.
Call it emotional or just pure joy, she confessed,
“I cried at the victory of the Flying Cow against
U-High, not only because it was my birthday, but
because it was just an amazing win!”
4-year-veteran, senior, Erika Bowden is being
driven insane due to her knee injury which has
kept her from joining her team and competing.
“It sucks having to watch. I just want to get out
there and play, but I try to be as positive as I can,”
said Bowden.
Leaving volleyball behind after high school will
definitely be something to get used to “After playing
for nine years, it’s really become an important
part of my life. I have such a great bond with my
teammates and every season has made me love
meeting all of the new girls,” she stated.
From freshman to seniors, based on how much
time they devote to this sport, these girls hope
to finish this year’s season with more wins rather
than losses.
a jack of all trades and plays many positions.
“I do whatever the team needs to get that W,
even if that means playing center,” said Hilpert. Being
the quarterback, there was some pressure to
perform. “It wasn’t as much (pressure) as playing
wide receiver,” he said.
Being the president of the school, and the senior
quarterback, we asked Hilpert what advice he
has for the upcoming freshman who want to play
football. He simply stated, “It goes by fast. Work as
hard as you can, while you can, when you can.”
With the great success from Rehkow and Hilpert
the CV Bears are on a path to greatness for the rest
of the season. With the great team playing and
teamwork the Bears may be on the same track as
the 2011 state team.
