Summit School Mission
Summit School is founded
on the belief that the
education of children is the
shared responsibility of
families, schools and
communities. We strive to
provide a high quality,
student-centered education
program designed around
compelling topics
emphasizing the integration
of the arts, science and
technology. Our learning
environment will provide for
multi-age grouping in a
collaborative community
that celebrates children’s
natural curiosity in their
quest for knowledge,
wellness and service
opportunities on their
journey to the summit.
Central Valley School District No. 356
Dear Summit School Families,
On behalf of the Summit
School PAC (Participation and
Activities Crew), I would like to
invite and welcome you to the
Fourth Annual Summit Schoolwide
Family Auction and
Dinner. This
year’s theme is
“Hawaiian Luau,”
so bring out the
flowered shirts
and get ready for
a tropical and laid back family
evening.
The Summit School PAC has
been responsible for making
many substantial donations to
our program that support
learning expeditions, provide
school-wide support for
technology and our growing
outdoor adventure program,
therefore enriching our
students’ school experiences.
Again this year volunteers
have been spending countless
hours in preparation for the
auction and have procured an
incredible selection of items to
be auctioned off. In addition to
the auction items, there will be
a Hawaiian Meal served,
guaranteeing a truly tropical
experience. The auction is our
only fundraiser. In order for
this to continue, we need your
support. Please mark
Friday, March 14, on
your calendar and plan to
attend this fun and exciting
community event. Please
invite family and friends to join
us. This is also a great way to
get to know other families and
show your child(ren) that great
things happen when a crew
works together.
Thank you for your continued
support and commitment to
making Summit School an
exceptional learning experience
for students. Your help and
support truly does make a
difference. I look forward to
seeing you at the auction on
March 14. This years auction
promises to be the best yet!
Sincerely,
Mr. Krislock, Principal
Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound® Design Principles
Expeditionary Learning is built on ten design principles. These principles reflect the design’s connection to other related thinking
about teaching, learning, and the culture of schools. In each newsletter, we will focus on one design principle.
This newsletter’s design principle is:
Success and Failure. All students need to be successful if they are to build the confidence and capacity
to take risks and meet increasingly difficult challenges. But it is also important for students to learn from their
failures, to persevere when things are hard, and to learn to turn disabilities into opportunities.
Chess fans will be interested to know that
32 Summit School and SVLA students
recently enjoyed learning about and
playing the game of chess. The first three
meetings students, from beginners to
hardy players, practiced sharpening their
skills. They participated in a chess tournament the next
four meetings. All of the students enjoyed the
tournament while sharpening their skills. First place went
to Summit Voyager Ethan Chavez. Second place went to
SVLA student Jacob Ross. A sportsmanship award was
given to Summit Trail Blazer Stuart Moyer. At every
meeting a chess set was given to one lucky student using
a random number generating calculator. Mr. Moon, the
chess tournament advisor in the “after school” program,
congratulates all of the participants.
Keep playing Chess!
RIDL’S RIDDLES
1. What is black when you buy it, red when
you use it and white when you are done
with it?
2. If Mr. Pink lives in the pink house, Mr. Yellow lives in the
yellow house, Mr. Green lives in the green house, then who
lives in the white house?
4. What did the father buffalo say to his son before leaving?
ANSWERS TO RIDL’S RIDDLES (FEB ISSUE)
1. Two Coins: They are a quarter and a nickel. The nickel
2. Hey, Hay: 24 bales. They are twice as many horses
eating for twice as many days, so they will eat four times
as much hay.

Everyday Activities to Reinforce Math Skills
Here are some fun, easy ways to incorporate math learning into your family life without
a lot of time, effort, or expense.
In the garage or driveway. A tire gauge is one of the simplest
tools for a child to use, and can help him or her learn about adding
and subtracting quantities. Show your children how to measure the
pressure in your bicycle or car tires. Explain what the pressure
should be, and have them help you figure out how much air you
need to add or release. Figuring out gas mileage is another great
math skill booster for older kids.
When it’s time to relax. Look for games and activities that reinforce math skills,
whether they’re computer games (like Math Blaster), online programs (there’s a great
list of children’s Internet math games at www.kidsites.com/sites-edu/math.htm), or
old favorites like dominoes, card games, or puzzles.
Lost & Found
The Lost & Found is quickly filling up with lonely
coats, jackets, hats, gloves and lunch boxes.
Please remember to put your student’s first and
last name on his/her coat, jacket and lunch box.
The Lost & Found is located in the hall north of
the office and the students pass by it daily. Please
remind your student to see if any of the items belong to
them. Thank you!
Central Valley Waives Snow Day Make Up for Students
The Central Valley School Board has voted not
to require students to make up three missed
days of school due to snow closures on
January 28, 30 and 31. The vote was contingent
on approval of a waiver request submitted to the
state, which has been granted. This means the
2007-08 Central Valley School District calendar will remain
unchanged, with schools closed for spring break from March 31—
April 4 and the last day of school on June 13. The School Board
action does not apply to teachers and other certificated
employees who must make up the three missed days. Planning
is underway for professional development activities on these
three days to support student learning.
