project learn<br />
This comprehensive program strategy<br />
reinforces and enhances <strong>the</strong> skills<br />
and knowledge young people learn<br />
at school during <strong>the</strong> hours <strong>the</strong>y spend<br />
at <strong>the</strong> Club. Project Learn is based<br />
on Dr. Reginald Clark’s research<br />
showing that students do much better<br />
in school when <strong>the</strong>y spend <strong>the</strong>ir nonschool<br />
hours engaged in fun, but<br />
academically beneficial, activities.<br />
Through Project Learn, Club staff<br />
create high-yield learning activities,<br />
which include leisure reading,<br />
writing activities, discussions with<br />
knowledgeable adults, homework help<br />
and educational games that reinforce<br />
learning.<br />
accelerated reader<br />
A year-round program that utilizes<br />
Renaissance Learning s<strong>of</strong>tware, this<br />
program keeps kids’ reading levels<br />
on track throughout <strong>the</strong> school year<br />
and summer break. Kids advance<br />
with clear benchmarks and take short<br />
quizzes <strong>to</strong> confirm <strong>the</strong>ir comprehension<br />
before progressing <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> next level.<br />
Members receive incentives for <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
participation and success.<br />
money matters<br />
This program promotes financial<br />
responsibility and independence.<br />
Participants learn how <strong>to</strong> manage a<br />
checking account, generate a budget,<br />
research savings and investment options<br />
and create a plan <strong>to</strong> pay for college.<br />
state education day<br />
This annual springtime event provides<br />
an opportunity for Club members<br />
<strong>to</strong> participate in a fun competition<br />
where <strong>the</strong>y meet members from<br />
around Colorado who share <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
appreciation for academics. In <strong>2010</strong>,<br />
members prepared for three months <strong>to</strong><br />
compete in <strong>the</strong> following categories:<br />
Geography, Science, Spelling, Math<br />
and Trivia.<br />
