Repsol Honda rider Dani Pedrosa from
Barcelona has previously won the 125cc World
Championship and twice captured the 250cc
title. So is has been his goal to complete the
trilogy with a MotoGP championship. The 2011
season started well, with a podium finish in all
of the first three races of the year, including one
victory. But don’t start any celebrating just yet.

PARTS Magazine EUROPE logo - final
REVISION DATE:
8/18/2010
Continuing with our profiles and introduction of key
brands now sold in Europe by Parts Europe, in this
issue we are featuring Moose Racing and its sister
brand, Moose Utility Division. Moose got its start
in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado almost twenty years
ago when a Honda dealer got the attention of Parts Unlimited
about the line of useful products for trail riders that he
had created. Seeing the potential, Parts Unlimited acquired
the line, brought it in-house and built it into not only one,
but two powerhouse brands for riders of motorcycles, ATVs
and UTVs.
Moose Racing-sponsored rider
David Knight. Photo courtesy of
Jonty Edmunds/KTM images.
Products carrying the Moose brand range from top end
riding gear, as used by top international stars such as
David Knight (who is seen on our front cover) to handy
products that bolt on to two and four-wheel sport vehicles.
A specialty of Moose Racing is the range of riding gear for
many different types of conditions. From the heat of the
deserts to cold and inclement weather, there is a Moose
outfit perfect for whatever Mother Nature throws at you.
There is also an in-depth line of Moose Hard Parts, with
replacement parts that are engineered to be better than the
stock OEM part, and are often priced lower as well.
The Moose Utility Division (M.U.D.) offers a very diverse
selection of accessories to upgrade a Yamaha Rhino or
Polaris RZR, as well as snow plows and other winter related
products. Be sure to check out the stories about the lines
starting on page 18.
Racing is in full swing this time of year and many Parts
Europe riders are having a great season. For one, however,
it is a season he hopes 2011 is a season he hopes he can
forget. That rider is MotoGP star Dani Pedrosa. The young
Repsol Honda rider suffered a broken shoulder late in the
2010 season and he had worked hard in the off-season
to get his body back into shape. Unfortunately, when the
racing started this spring Dani felt pain and discomfort that
he knew was not normal. Thus began a season of extreme
highs and frustrating lows. Don’t miss the interview (starting
on page 40) that photographer Andrew Wheeler conducted
with Dani in the middle of it all.
Some racers are having a very successful season. Namely
Motocross racers Steven Frossard and Tommy Seale, who
swept both classes at the French Grand Prix held in June.
These two are outfitted in THOR gear this season, as are
top runners such as David Philippaerts, Gautier Paulin, Max
Anstie, and others.
There are many brands represented in this issue. We hope
you will take the time to read about the many products
we have featured; Moose Racing, Moose Utility Division,
Performance Machine, Pro-X, THOR, Feuling, Vance & Hines,
Bobster, Drag Clutches, ICON, Drag Seats, Daytona Twin-Tec,
Slime, Moto-Master, Cometic, Drag Batteries, Cables and Oil.
Ride safe!
Yamaha Monster Energy’s Steven
Frossard’s 1-2 score had the partisan
Yamaha Monster Energy’s Steven Frossard speeds to a MX1 moto victory at Saint D’Angely.
ever MX1 overall victory. His Yamaha
Monster Energy and THOR teammate
David Philippaerts was arguably the
fastest rider on the track and looked
set to strike for the lead in moto one
when he made a small mistake and
went down, ending up having to settle
for 3rd. A crash on the opening lap of
the second moto ruined the Italian’s
chances of a podium. A huge French
welcome to Ben Townley saw the New
Zealander put on a great show and on
the final lap of moto 2 the kiwi was set
for an amazing 4th overall finish when
he crossed lines with Max Nagl and
went down. Townley was unhurt in the
crash, but retired from the event.
Tommy Searle gave his French ClS
reason to celebrate at their home GP.
The gutsy Brit rode a brilliant second
and secure his first GP overall win of
the season. Searle was joined on the
podium by fellow THOR racer, Gautier
Arie Vos Wins at Vvarsselring with Moto-Master
Dutch Superbike rider Arie Vos continued his winning
streak in June when he won the fifth Dutch
Superbike race of 2011 at the rapid Varsselring
road-circuit at Hengelo in the Netherlands. The
labour Force Racing Team driver made a perfect start
from pole position and immediatly pulled away from the
competition. After a few laps Chris Burns (on Moto-Master
equipped Honda CBR1000RR) came close, but Vos countered
immediately and pulled even farther away from the
competition, ensuring yet another Dutch Superbike win.
Afterwards Arie Vos said: “It was a perfect weekend at
NEWS EVENTS
Hengelo. In the first free practice on Thursday I had a fast
pace and kept it all weekend long. After the starting lights
went out I immediately found a good rhythm and could
pull away first from Raymond Schouten and then from Chris
Burns. The Moto-Master 5.5mm Flame brake rotors on my
BMW S1000RR did the job perfectly as the street layout of
Hengelo is much tougher on the brakes than the average
closed circuit layout. I use SBS Dual Carbon pads, together
with my Moto-Master 5.5mm racing Flame rotors and it
proved to be the winning combination.”
Vendor Training at Parts Europe
Story and photos by Bettina Antony
Two days of first hand news: the first vendor training
event saw nearly all Parts Europe reps gathering in
Konz/Trier to learn more about the latest additions
to Parts Europe’s inventory.
Both reps and sales team members of Parts Europe were
looking forward to the workshop’s start on Monday
morning, May 2nd. It was a packed program with product
presentations with Bel-Ray, a recent addition to Parts Europe’s
portfolio, kicking off the training. The reps from many
different European countries got insights in features and
benefits of the complete line of high quality powersports
lubricants.
Further highlights, such as workshops by EBC Brakes and
Moto-Master of the Netherlands
attended the workshop with two
motorcycles and a lot of sample
products to give the Parts Europe reps
practical training and information to
forward to their dealers.
evening. Well equipped with all new information and background
knowledge to provide the dealers, the Parts Europe
reps still had the chance to get more first hand information.
With Muc-Off and Moto-Master, two more brands presented
their products the next day. Reps and Sales Team members
were absolutely enthusiastic about the whole event and
showed their eagerness to pass on their new knowledge to
dealers.
For Parts Europe, vendor training and workshops with
European reps have proven to be a valuable source of
dynamic momentum for the whole sales force and an even
more important source of information and know-how for
Spanish Reps Visit Parts Europe
Spanish Reps Franco Klinzmann and Ignazio Martinez
came to Konz in March to meet with Gunther Hildebrandt
and Frank Gwosdz, two V-Twin specialists of the
Parts Europe sales team. For Frank, the meeting also
had a personal note: “It’s always nice to welcome a friend. Franco
and I have known each other for many years and we always look
forward to seeing each other again!”
Franco and Ignazio spent a few days at Parts Europe, investing
a lot of work on information exchange and gaining extensive
knowledge on new products for the Spanish market. Gunther,
also a specialist for ICON gear, led the visitors through the inhouse
exhibition at Parts Europe and presented the collection
of ICON and Saddlemen products. He also enjoyed working with
the two Spanish V-Twin enthusiasts; and, even more important,
Gunther knows about the relevance for the very familiar V-Twin
scene: “People in this scene know each other for many years and
all over Europe! It is important to have a relationship of trust and
reliability. Our dealers appreciate that we gained our knowledge
in practice and all speak from long experience. They know they
can rely on us!”
after a lightning start, but on lap two it was Casey Stoner
who passed by for the lead. The Spaniard charged hard and
stayed close for the first half of the race. When Marco Simoncelli
was putting pressure on Pedrosa and tried to pass, both
Hondas collided resulting into a nasty crash for Pedrosa
Eric Doron (Paris Moto Est) and Carine Debeure (Paris Moto Nord) with Dani Pedrosa.
Randy Mamola’s connections in the paddock allow him access most race fans can only dream of. He is seen here in the Tech 3
Yamaha garage with a portion of the LeMans attendees explaining details about Cal Crutchlow’s MotoGP race bike.
and unfortunately he sustained a broken collarbone in the
incident. Stoner went on to win the race in front of Andrea
Dovizioso and Valentino Rossi.
This was the first time that Parts Europe invited dealers to a
showed throughout the weekend it certainly will not be
the last.
Moose Racing & Moose Utility Division
Moose Racing is a long established company which is best
known for making outstanding off-road equipment and hard
parts for motorcycles and ATVs. But Moose Racing is so much
more than just riding gear and hard parts. They are a company
focused on dirt and all the extreme environments that come with off-road
riding all over the world, whether it be racing motorcycles, ATVs, off-road
or motocross, rallys, desert, dual-sport or Adventure riding, Moose Racing
is there with gear and products to make your ride easier, faster and more
enjoyable.
Parts Europe sat down with Moose Racing General Manager Brad
Kruckenberg to find out more about this unique company and how their
products fit into the European motorcycle and ATV market.
Parts Europe: What are the origins of Moose Racing?
Brad Kruckenberg: The origins of Moose Racing came about as a result
of a group of off-road enthusiasts who lived in Colorado. like most guys
who ride in the dirt, they kept coming back from their rides and would
discuss how they could make the ride more enjoyable by improving on
the equipment they were using and soon they started brainstorming some
new things. It all started with a modest array of hard parts and has grown
into Moose Racing as we know it today.
PE: How are Moose Racing Products developed,
designed and brought to the market?
BK: Products are brought to market in a number of ways. Sometimes we
come up with a product idea and then source it to a vendor we are currently
working with that we know can handle it. Sometimes our suppliers come to
us with new product ideas and sometimes the idea comes from a customer
and we run with it. The development process varies, but usually includes
sampling and verification of pricing and margins. Once we get it to a point
where it is ready to go, we get it set up in our system and formulate a
marketing plan for introduction. There are two main product introduction
timeframes we try to hit. One is NVP [The Parts Unlimited/Drag Specialties
National Vendor Presentations] and the other is the Indy Show. We will also
Go to nearly any off-road event, and you
can bet that Moose Racing will be there.
This is all backed up by inclusion in our catalogs, Parts
Unlimited catalogs and various national media advertising
campaigns. From there it is up to the best sales force in the
industry to get the word out.
PE: Moose Racing gear is famous for its diversity. Why
make riding gear as extreme as Sahara and Monarch Pass?
BK: We make products like Sahara and Monarch because
there is a need. As you know from riding yourself, the best
ride is the one you have just completed when all you can
talk about is how great the conditions were and how much
you enjoyed yourself. You can’t do that if you are hot, cold,
wet or any other feeling that causes you discomfort. I don’t
know what else I can say about that. It’s just that simple
and it applies to hard parts as well as apparel. A good set
of Subtank Handlebars that provide a superior ride are just
as important as the Sahara Racewear that keeps you cool
in the mid-summer heat.
PE: What about Moose Racing Hard Parts and Moose
Utility Division (MUD), how did they come into being?
BK: like I said before, hard parts are where it all started. We
have simply run with that program and added products
as the industry grew. MUD is the same way. As the ATV
and UTV markets started to blow up, people started to
realize that OEM units were good, but could be so much
better. A case in point is my own Honda 500 Foreman. It
is an excellent machine, but ran just okay until I realized
how good it could be with a jet kit, aftermarket air filter
and other upgrades. Apparently some OEM manufacturers
will lean out new vehicles from the factory in the interest
of meeting emission standards. While this is all well and
good, they don’t always run to the fullest of their potential.
Our products simply let them do this.
PE: What are some of Moose Racing’s “best
sellers” and biggest successes over the years?
SPECIAL FEATURE
Moose Racing has specially designed their riding gear to withstand even the
toughest elements. With gear like the Sahara and Monarch Pass, riders will
stay comfortable, no matter how hot, cold or wet their ride might be!
BK: We have had so many successes, it’s hard to pinpoint
just a few. The biggest key is working with reputable
manufacturers who build superior product at a fair price. I
truly believe this is one of the reasons we have continued
to see growth through the worst of industry downturns.
Moose products aren’t always going to be the most
expensive or highest performance, but they are also not
going to be the least expensive and made from inferior
materials. What a customer is going to get from us is a
quality product that lasts and at a fair price.
PE: Who are some of the famous Europeans and
Americans who ride or rode with Moose Racing?
BK: When Parts Unlimited first made the connection with
Moose Off-Road (original name), it was done during a time
when industry visionary Wayne Cornelius came on board
and had the foresight to get us involved in the off-road
industry. Wayne was in charge of bringing in new products
and taking our presence in the dirt to new levels. He was a
Southern California guy who had a passion for riding, knew
what he wanted and figured it was what others wanted too.
He immediately brought in ISDE Gold Medalist and 8-time
National Enduro Champion Dick Burleson to help with the
development of the apparel line and the flagship product
was the original XCR Jacket. I remember those days and how
we struggled to find a manufacturer who could keep up with
the demand. We attended the 1994 ISDE in Tulsa, Oklahoma
and that was our baptism into the apparel market. Gary
Gibbs (G2 Ergo) worked for us at that time as well and had
his own impressive resume of riding the toughest races in
Illinois under the guidance of legendary trail boss Bill Gusse
Moose Utility Division (MUD) focuses mainly on the ATV and UTV markets,
creating top-quality products that help their customers get the most out
of their machines, whether they’re using them for work or play.
...continued from page 19
who now runs the Parts Unlimited OMA National Series.
Gary and I took a cube van full of product for our sponsored
racers and press personnel. Needless to say, it wasn’t just
another set of gear and had purpose. The response was
overwhelmingly positive and we were on our way. One of
the riders at that event was Rodney Smith and he is a Moose
guy to this day. We have also aligned ourselves over the years
with names like (no particular order) Scott Summers, Mike
lafferty, Ty Davis, David Knight, Bill Ballance, Jimmy Jarrett,
Paul Whibley, Nathan Woods, Josh Strang and the list goes
on. We haven’t just stayed in the off-road realm either. We
have experienced a ton of recent success in the Arenacross
Series with the Babbitt’s Kawasaki stable, have had a number
of successful Supercross riders, ATV champions and even
shared some extreme world records with Robbie Maddison.
PE: What markets do you see expanding in the future?
BK: The biggest market we see as potential for growth right
now is dual sport and adventure touring. As fuel prices
continue to rise and put a pinch on everyone’s disposable
Moose Racing started out with just a modest array of
hard parts, and over the years, the company has grown
and expanded to Moose Racing as we know it today.
Moose Racing’s passion for off-road runs deep, from creating outstanding off-road gear and hard parts, to trail
riding, racing, rider support and everything in between. If it involves off-road, Moose Racing is there.
income, we are seeing a lot of people get into motorcycling
as a cost-savings alternative to their daily commute to
work or wherever they are headed. Geographically, I think
Canada and Europe are markets we are going to be able to
penetrate further. The Parts Unlimited sister companies of
Parts Canada and Parts Europe have embraced all of the
Moose brands and we are the beneficiaries of this. Moose
is a strong name in the U.S., but it is gaining steam globally
and customers everywhere are seeing what we have to
offer.
PE: How is Moose Racing looking forward
to the future of the industry?
BK: As far as I’m concerned, the future of the industry is
very bright. With the help of our dedicated customers, and
a solid dealer base, we have weathered some significant
storms as of late, but having a parent company that is
strong has allowed us to keep charging hard and not
deviating from our basic core principles and products.
PE: Anything else you’d like to add?
SPECIAL FEATURE
BK: In closing, I always say that I compare what I do
to a head coach of a successful sports team. The best
head coach is only as successful as the people he or she
surrounds themselves with. I am fortunate to have a staff
of assistant coaches who are hard working and passionate
about what they do. They never forget the principles of
hard work, but remember at the end of the day that we are
selling fun. How many people get to do that? Our team is
also fortunate to work with great people behind the scenes
like our manufacturers, our Purchasing staff and the front
line players who make the sales happen. Without the Sales
staff of all of our company reps and our dealers, we are no
better than anyone who stocks a shelf with the hopes of
making a sale. Add it all up and it is a combination that is
tough to beat.
ATVs and UTVs make great tools for almost every
type of utility work and are ideal for farms,
vineyards, constructions sites, and caring for
livestock. They can be used for everything from
hauling hay to transporting archeologists to an important
dig. Modern ATVs and UTVs are made to take a beating
and keep working. Plus, they’re great fun to ride, race or
work with. So whether you use your ATV or UTV for work
or play, it’s good to know your machine will get you where
you want to go and then back again.
Still, no matter how well made, your ATV or UTV requires
maintenance and attention from top to bottom. And
for machines that are made to take on the extremes of
weather and off-road conditions, it’s always a good idea to
pay particular attention to the parts that keep everything
rolling, like the CV joints, which require regular maintenance.
Moose Utility Division (MUD) is there to help.
What are signs that your CV joints are in danger? If the
CV boot is torn, dust and mud can get in and ruin your
CV joints. Not fixing the CV joints quickly can result in
becoming stranded on the trail, or worse, a snapped CV
half shaft can puncture important pieces of your ATV. You
can help prevent wear and tear on your CV joints with
regular maintenance and inexpensive replacement of
worn parts such as the CV Boot Guards. MUD offers tough,
lightweight aluminum guards that are an inexpensive
investment in the life of your machine. Protected and
undamaged boots keep lubrication in, water and dirt out.
tie rod ends.
Save on costly repairs to CV joints by protecting boots
and CVs themselves.
What about the CV boots; what is the danger of worn out
CV boots? Heat is the number one cause of boot failure.
That heat, transmitted along a front wheel drive axle from
either; (1) malfunctioning or stuck brake pads, (2) worn
wheel bearings, or (3) internal transmission problems, can
cause a CV boot to weaken and easily tear resulting in an
exposed CV joint. An exposed CV joint will quickly gather
road debris and ultimately fail. MUD has an answer in
their CV Boot Kits. Inexpensive MUD CV Boot Kits replace
dangerously worn, CV boots before dirt, dust and grime
destroy expensive CV joints. Tougher than stock and complete
with everything you need to complete the job, MUD
heavy-duty puncture resistant CV Boot Kits comes with
grease and clamps. Each complete assembly fits one side.
Another item to keep an eye on for maintenance are your
tie rods. MUD offers Tie Rod End Kits to replace loose and
torn Tie Rod ends. look for loose or broken tie rod ends
to see if they need to be replaced. Most commonly, tie
rod ends break when an object is hit, like a tree, fencepost,
rocks, etc. These all can cause damage, which will
increase with each major and even minor impact. MUD
Tie Ride End Kits contain inner and outer tie rods that are
designed to repair loose and worn tie rod ends.
When a rider makes
the decision to
mount-up custom
wheels he does
not want to wait. With custom
wheels there’s an instant transformation
to the way any bike
looks, rides and handles. The
gratification for all that has to
be instant, too. No one wants to
pick out their new wheels and
then be told they’ll have to wait
six to eight weeks before everything’s
in stock and available.
At Parts Europe they don’t have
to wait. Those custom wheels,
genuine Performance Machine
wheels in some great styles, the
Elements, Rivieras and Wraths,
are in stock now. More than
that, Parts Europe has everything
to go with those wheels,
too, all the matching pulleys,
brake rotors and even air filters.
Riders wanting custom can
have it when they want it, and
it’s all Performance Machine,
the top choice of top builders
worldwide.
Riviera
The Element features a unique
five-spoke design with deeply
engraved lines starting at the
hub and reaching all the way
to the rim lip. It’s impressive.
The Riviera, with its eight linear
spokes, lends a simple, yet
defined look. Those eight faceted
spokes split into 16 before
fusing back into the rim lip, a
styling cue that’s carried all the
way to that rim lip for a more
intense look. And then there’s
the Wrath, a highly detailed
five-spoke wheel that’s right at
home on lots of bikes, modern
customs to hardcore choppers.
All of those wheels are available
in either a highly-polished chrome finish or the PM exclusive
Contrast Cut against a black anodized finish. Either
way the look is stunning, and remember, to complete the
transformation from stock to not all the matching pulleys,
brake rotors and air cleaners are available, too. In chrome
or Contrast Cut.
The PM Wheels:
In Stock and Ready to Roll
Element
Parts Europe has all those great-looking Performance Machine
wheels, the Elements, Wraths and Rivieras, in stock now. More
than that, Parts Europe has everything to go with those wheels,
too, all the matching pulleys, brake rotors and even air filters.
More than just looking good,
these wheels are built to perform.
Every PM wheel design is
rigorously and vigorously tested
in Performance Machine’s own
computer-controlled test lab
before it’s released for sale, and
PM puts those parts through the
wringer. Consider the tests that
every wheel design must pass:
The Impact Test: PM’s massive
testing rig simulates the
absolute worst conditions a
wheel might encounter out on
the street. Potholes, pavement
breaks, road debris, even giant
wheel stands–the effects of all of
that and more are re-created in
the lab and the results analyzed.
The Torsional-Load Test: This
PM test rig subjects a wheel
to countless starting/stopping
cycles, including the forces
encountered during those big,
smoky burnouts.
The Side-Load Test: Hard
cornering can put tremendous
loads on a wheel, but nothing
like it’ll see on this test rig.
The Radial-Load Test: Big Twins
can get heavy. PM’s gigantic
“rolling road” test fixture can
load a new wheel well past any
weight it’ll see once it gets into a
customer’s hands.
The Corrosion-Resistance Test:
A corroded wheel not only looks
bad, it can be dangerous. PM’s
“Salt Spray” testing vat accelerates
the corrosion process so
potential problems can be found
and fixed before that wheel’s offered
for sale.
With Performance Machine
you’re selling looks and you’re
selling quality. Just as important, you’re selling wheels,
pulleys, rotors and air cleaners that are in stock right now
and ready for immediate delivery. Plus, each of these
wheel designs are TUV approved!
ProX Racing Parts was founded in 1975. Their
headquarters are located in the Netherlands
near Amsterdam Airport–a central location
in Europe and a perfect gateway to the rest of
the world. Domestic as well as international dealers and
distributors/importers are being served from our facility
in the Netherlands.
ProX Racing Parts is mainly specialized in high quality
internal engine components such as pistons, connecting
rods, crankshafts and valves. However, ProX Racing Parts
is continuously expanding its range and therefore investing
in other technical components regarding the various
Powersports applications that can be found outside an
engine. Including the latest additions ProX Racing Parts
stocks well over 5,000 part numbers divided over 50
different product groups. All parts are manufactured to
highest quality standards at “state of the art” manufacturing
facilities around the world. These manufacturing
factories include reputable businesses that manufacture
OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturing) parts for the
leading motorcycle brands worldwide. With the experience
and long established relationships ProX Racing Parts
is therefore always able to select the best manufacturer to
meet or exceed high level requirements regarding technical
specifications and market.
Although ProX Racing Parts has many product lines, their
pistons and connecting rods are the core business. Most
of the pistons and connecting rods are made in Japan
and are supplied with high quality accessories. The piston
In the early days ProX Racing Parts was known for its high
ATVs and personal watercraft applications are equipped
with forged pistons, of course ProX Racing Parts offers
ProX Racing Parts still have a complete range of cast
unique features of the ProX piston range is the offering
of oversizes up to 2,00 mm for many applications. Most
of the pistons come with a coating to have superior wear
get a special treatment that is called barreling. This process
will make the surface of the material smoother and will
give better properties to the material, which makes the
connecting rod more durable. As mentioned before the
connecting rod kits come with high quality bearings.
PRODUCT SHOWCASE
AdvANCed oiling system
In 2006 Harley-Davidson introduced a new style,
higher volume/higher pressure oil pump for the Twin
Cam engine. It needed it. A Twin Cam’s oiling system,
OE, uses a pretty small crank-speed gerotor style oil
pump with its gears preloaded against the cam support
plate and the pump housing itself. All that preloading
causes lots of friction and wear, and couple that with the
Twin Cam’s crankshaft and its machined “paddles” that
provide a trigger for the crank-position sensor (CPS) and
you end up with an oiling system that’s far from optimal.
Those paddles do a great job of whipping up any unscavenged
oil turning it into a thick, foamy froth, hardly
a model of efficiency. The new pump, introduced in ‘06
Dyna models and included in all models since, was a step
in the right direction–but not a particularly big one. The
Feuling Parts Oiling System, in stock and available now, is
the real answer here.
Taking a “system approach” to the Twin Cam’s oiling
problem the Feuling upgrade kit includes a 6061 billet
aluminum high-volume oil pump, a 7075 billet hard-anodized
cam plate, a set of tight-tolerance HP + hydraulic
roller lifters and all the necessary gaskets for installation.
This virtually friction-free parts combination increases
the oil pressure, oil volume, oil flow and oil scavenging
and eliminates wet sumping. The Feuling system not only
delivers lots more oil, because of its advanced design
it delivers cooler oil, as well, which of course prolongs
engine life and enhances reliability. And without all that
OE pump preload and its unnecessary friction the freerspinning
Feuling system can also increase rear wheel
power by as much as three horsepower and four lbs./
ft. of torque. All coming from an oiling system upgrade.
Pumped Up!:
The Feuling Parts Oiling System
Many top engine builders swear by the Feuling System,
for good reason.
In the earlier ‘99-‘06 applications the Feuling oil pump
increases pressure volume by an impressive 40-percent
and scavenge (return) volume by 60-percent. Feuling’s
new-style pump for the ‘06 and later Twin Cams increases
pressure volume by 20-percent and scavenge volume by
30-percent. In both cases the increase in pressure volume
reduces lifter and valve-train clatter, lowers cylinder head
temperatures and increases engine oil pressure overall.
The increase in scavenge volume greatly reduces engine
blow by, eliminates that “frothing” situation and turns the
Twin Cam into a true dry sump engine. And everything
The Feuling Parts Oiling
System upgrade kit
includes a 6061 billet
aluminum high-volume
oil pump, a 7075
billet hard-anodized
cam plate, a set of
tight-tolerance HP +
hydraulic roller lifters
and all the necessary
gaskets for installation.
here is top quality. The Feuling oil pump bodies are
aerospace-grade billet aluminum with high-flow 4140
heat-treated chrome moly gerotor gears inside. The replacement
cam plates are much stronger and harder than
the factory parts and the HP+ full travel hydraulic roller
lifters are an upgrade, as well. They hold much tighter
internal tolerances than OE for a slower bleed-down to
better handle heavy valve spring pressures. Everything
has been dyno-developed and track tested to provide
maximum power, reliability and longevity.
All this is an easy bolt-in replacement, a system that really
addresses the Twin Cam oiling problem. It increases the
oil supply, increases the scavenging and delivers cooler
oil in the process. It’s all in stock at Parts Europe right now,
ready for immediate delivery, so call today.
SpORTSTeR ANd dYNA exhausts
Two of the sportiest Harleys in the lineup, the
Sportsters and Dynas, are the ones that can be
the most fun. They’re light, they’re agile, they’re
rider’s motorcycles. It’s no wonder they’re as
popular as they are. And like every other Harley-Davidson
they rarely stay completely stock for long. Those Sportsters
and Dynas are even more fun after a few modifications
and additions are made, most notably a new exhaust.
Vance & Hines has just the pipes to increase the fun factor
here. The Vance & Hines Big Shots and Short Shots, both
in stock now at Parts Europe and available with either a
glistening chrome or a sinister black finish, are some of
the most popular exhausts in the Vance & Hines lineup.
They’re a great addition to any Sportster or Dyna on all
counts–looks, sound and performance.
The Big Shots are just that, big pipes that not only look
the part–they are the part. The Big Shots have been a
top pick right from the moment they were introduced. A
great looking, great sounding set of pipes, they feature
that revolutionary Vance & Hines Power Chamber design,
a unique cross-over system that increases horsepower
and torque by, essentially, giving these 2-into-2 exhausts
all the scavenging and performance benefits of a 2-into-1
system. The Big Shots come armed with full-coverage
6.35 cm heat shields that that will keep the pipes blueproof
for long-lasting style and, like all Vance & Hines
The Vance & Hines Short Shots are also available in chrome or
black, with direct-fit applications for all the 1991 through 2011
Dyna models and the 2004 through 2011 Sportsters.
Big Shots & Short Shots:
For the XLs and Dynas
exhausts, they install with a superior fit and an unrivalled
finish in either chrome or that race-quality black ceramic.
Everything, including the end caps, is meticulously finished,
all mounting hardware is included and the baffles
are removable. There are direct-fit applications for all the
1991 through 2011 Dyna models and the 2004 through
2011 Sportsters.
Then there’s the Short Shots. This time it’s that same Vance
& Hines high-style and performance, but with a tough, allbusiness
look. The pipes exit at the end of the frame, just
in front of the rear wheel. It’s that short, fat straight-pipe
look riders love, and with the slash-cut ends there’s not
much that looks better on a Sportster or Dyna. The 4.44
cm headpipes have 220-degree coverage heat shields to
keep everything looking brand-new, they’re available in
both the chrome or black finishes and the black versions
feature those full-coverage heat shields coated with a
race-quality black ceramic with a signature Vance & Hines
chrome badge and a great looking end-cap treatment.
Once again, the applications list covers all the 1991
through 2011 Dyna models and the 2004 through 2011
Sportsters.
Pipes are just about the first thing a Harley rider will
change, swapping the plugged-up, plain looking and
weak sounding factory exhausts for something bigger,
brighter, bolder and better performing. And for that
change Vance & Hines has been a top pick for years. Parts
mOOSe RACING hard parts
Moose Racing began as a company specializing
in hard parts for off-road machines.
They’ve grown significantly and now offer
high quality racewear as well as many great
products for motorcycles and ATVs. But those hard parts
that make your bike or ATV perform better are still a big
part of Moose Racing’s core business.
Moose Racing offers a multitude of general engine repair/
service items that will keep your machine performing
well for years to come. These products are sometimes
overlooked, but are vital to a healthy running machine.
Dealers and consumers should take note.
Carb Repair Kits: The carburetor on all ATVs is something
that should be kept clean and sealed. Remember, the carb
is where the air and fuel mix as the mixture heads into the
combustion chamber. A clean, well-maintained carburetor
will help your machine perform to its highest potential
while a dirty, clogged, or damaged carb will cause your
Air Filters
Hard Parts:
For a Better Performing Machine
Moose Racing Air Filters offer the same
high-quality foam designed for racers.
They are engineered for maximum
airflow while increasing horsepower
and maintain premium protection
by stopping the finest dust particles.
These filters are made of dual bonded
foam for easier cleaning and feature
flexible seams that will not crack.
Moose Racing Air Filters are designed
to fit all stock air boxes.
machine to run poorly or not at all.
If your bike or ATV is running nicely and acceleration is
sharp, the carb is probably in good shape. However,
some telltale symptoms that your carb needs rebuilding
may include: mysterious gas leaks (typically ones where
the gas is trickling out of the vent tube on the bottom
of the carb), poor acceleration or serious bogging, lots of
exhaust smoke, occasional misfires, hard starting when
warm, and improper idling. When you’re ready to do a
carb rebuild, then start with the correct tools and parts. It
is a good idea to buy all the parts at once, because Moose
Racing Carb Repair Kits are inexpensive, high quality, and
Q&A Midway through the race
Story and photos by Andrew Wheeler
Editor’s note: Two races into the 2011 season, despite podium finishes at both events, all was not well with Dani Pedrosa. He was experiencing
pain in his previously broken left shoulder and a doctor’s examination revealed the need for some additional repairs to correct the problem.
The decision was made for him to have surgery prior to the next race in Portugal. The following interview by Andrew Wheeler was conducted
after the surgery, and after qualifying had ended at Estoril with Dani earning the 3rd starting position for the race.
Estoril. The post-qualifying press conference is a lively
affair, despite the room’s dated, chilly atmosphere.
As the late afternoon sun streams through the high
windows, doing nothing to abate the cold, Marco
Simoncelli and Jorge lorenzo exchange barbs regarding
the merits of aggressive—or rather, “spirited”—racing. Dani
Pedrosa, his hand disguising an obvious smile, just sits back
and observes. The conflict, it would seem at the time, was
only between Simoncelli and lorenzo.
After qualifying third for Sunday’s race, the Repsol Honda
rider is dwarfed by journalists asking him questions in various
Spanish dialects. All I can see is the top of his blue HRC
team cap. His performance is impressive after surgery to
repair persistent subclavian artery damage that took place
less than three weeks ago, on the Monday after the previous
round in Jerez.
I hadn’t wanted to ask him yet another question about his
shoulder, but I ended up doing it anyway. Dani replies, “It’s
fine now,” but goes on to say that the real test is how it lasts.
Pedrosa is no stranger to discomfort and pain.
So, how does a top level rider who has to manhandle a 200+
horsepower MotoGP machine around a racetrack deal with
the pain and discomfort caused by injury? “Depending on
character,” Dani says. “There are many ways to deal with
pain.” Some people are braver than others, he says, and there
are some who are “more scared due in part to caring more
about their body than others.” There is a knowledgeable look
that flashes across his face when he goes on to say that by
thinking less, he has become a lot braver. Dani understands,
though, the need to be mentally tough and to overcome the
pain and discomfort because “everything happens so fast
and anything in that moment isn’t the way you would like
every time.”
When he leans back in his chair, looking a little more comfortable,
I ask about his rehabilitation regimen. How does he
get his fitness back and then maintain it? “I do all I can,” he
says with a chuckle, going on to say that he follows his doctor’s
advice, and then his physio’s advice and tries to stick to
the plan while understanding that there are many different
techniques for each problem.
“You have to listen to your body,” he says emphatically. “You
really have to understand how you are and what’s good for
you and what’s not good for you.” Being calm is the key, as
opposed to overly aggressive with the rehab. He illustrates
what he means with his hands, explaining that he takes
those feelings to go “step by step,” but gets into trouble once
the line is crossed, that line that stops him from listening to
his body.
I then ask him what he does away from the racetrack: Does
he cycle? Does he have a pet? He laughs and says, “I like to
cycle,” and he also likes to be around motorcycles away from
the track. “Motocross, supermoto,” he adds, “but not everything
is about racing.” Training is important, as is relaxing,
like going to the cinema to see some good movies, just fun
with friends. It’s becoming apparent that there is a life balance
within Dani because even with his strict self-discipline
in training and rehabilitation, he explains. He does not want
to be “a robot doing just things for racing” because “that’s not
a proper life.” I then ask Dani if he likes to cook. He smiles and
calmly replies, “When it’s necessary.”
Our discussion turns to preparation for a race weekend. As
with the life balance explained above, Dani approaches this
in a very similar manner because through the experience
he has amassed over the years, he has realized that not one
single thing you will do will make you win or be fast. He said,
“Collectively there are many things that come together that
make you do good. The most important one is to be happy.”
We continued on to dreams and ambitions Dani wants to
achieve. Replying very assertively, but with slightly facetious
tone, he says, “MotoGP World Champion.” Then he adds, with
an even bigger grin, “After that, if I get it, maybe another
championship.”
It’s Dani’s tenth year of Championship level
racing. Having just missed his April 8th anniversary,
I ask Dani if he has any special
plans to celebrate. It’s clear that these
are just numbers to him even though
he does follow them; for
instance, he mentions
Dani chases fellow Spainard
Jorge Lorenzo in the early
laps of the Estoril race.
SPECIAL FEATURE
Can a victory be any sweeter
than to do it on your first race
after shoulder surgery?
Dani sits calmly before
the store of the MotoGP
final at Estoril.
that if he had “99 pole positions, I may push for 100.” In the
grand scheme of things, though, he has more tactile issues
at hand. He gestures toward his shoulder. “The operation,
with rehab, check with the doctor, and rehab, and rest, and
rehab, so it is not easy to think about something else.”
Finally, I ask Dani about the 2012 season, specifically the
switch from the 800cc machines back to the 1000cc. Dani
sits back in his chair and looks me square in the face. “I have
a good experience with the 1000’s,” he says. “I’m not too
worried about this.”
Editor’s note: While Dani Pedrosa had qualified 3rd fastest at Estoril,
no one, including him, knew if his newly repaired shoulder would
provide him the strength to go the full race distance? It did, and he
won the Estoril race in heroic fashion. His physical ailments were
presumed to now be behind him and his dream of becoming MotoGP
world champion seemed very possible.
At the very next race at LeMans, however, Dani was taken down in
the now-famous collision with Italian rider Marco Simoncelli, with
Dani suffering a broken collarbone; his hopes for a MotoGP world
championship now dashed. He missed two races and is no doubt
already looking ahead to 2012.
As Ringo Starr once sung, “It don’t come easy.”
PRODUCT SHOWCASE
ICON’S alliance lucky lid
Sometimes the most expressive piece of art you
have is your helmet. Helmet graphics do more
than just attract attention, they offer an insight
into your personality, and tell the world your passion
for riding. Icon understands that your helmet is much
more than just a smart item of safety gear; that’s why they
put so much effort into innovative graphics and designs
for street riders.
The Alliance lucky lid is just one Icon helmet that will
pull people across your showroom to get a closer look.
The original idea for the lucky lid is simple–a helmet
based on the characters from a deck of cards. But, as with
everything Icon, it is so much more than that. The artist
went beyond a deck of common playing cards, so that
each card represented also includes elements of luck and
gaming.
look closely at the finished product. Icon used a combination
of spot and halftone screening processes to get
correct colors and halftone fades. This is the first Icon
asymmetrical design from the ground up. Icon started
out with just the characters from a deck of cards and then
honed in on more specific ideas. The Suicide King seemed
to be the best card out of the deck so they went with
that. The dice, 777, and skull element on the front of the
helmet seemed to really capture the “luck” element. And
the flames and skull gave it a unique motorsports touch.
And what deck of cards is complete without a Joker? He’s
on the back where those who can’t keep up can see him
LUCKY LID
Feeling Lucky?:
Icon’s Newest Alliance Graphic
laugh as you ride away into the distance.
Best of all the lucky lid is part of Icon’s superior line of
Alliance helmets. Based on the proven Alliance SSR, this
helmet is fitted with a multitude of key refinements. The
first revision is the new reshaping of the EPS liner into a
more oval geometry. This new head-form increases rider
comfort by slightly elongating the entire inner circumference.
Combine this geometry with Icon’s removable
Hydra-Dry wicking comfort liner and the result is a nearly
perfect rider-focused enclosure. Much like a finely tuned
motor, Icon reshaped and enlarged the intake and exhaust
ports for increased airflow. Ventilation ports have also
been added to the lateral aspect of the helmet to further
increase air-flow. The shield itself has been upgraded to
Icon’s distortion free Pro-Shield. The Pro-Shield features
the Pro-lock shield locking system, graphic enabled side
plates, fog-free coating, and a no-tools shield change
interface. The Alliance is constructed with premier
manufacturing processes and stringent quality assurance
procedures. This, combined with rigorous testing, assures
that the Alliance meets or exceeds the All World Standard,
which means it passes the high safety standards set by
DOT, ECE, SG, and SAI.
The basic idea behind the Alliance Lucky Lid from Icon is simple – a helmet design based on
the characters in a deck of cards. But, of course, with Icon, nothing is ever that simple, so they
took that basic idea and ran wild with it. This unique graphic is paired with Icon’s popular line
of Alliance helmets – your customers will definitely want to take a closer look at this one!
Retro bobbers and
more of them being built now,
that’s for sure. Custom Pans,
Either way, Small or large,
there’s a saddle here in a style
that’s going to be perfect for any
seats is built right.
The Drag Specialties seats are
handmade in Rogers, Minnesota.
Kevin lehan, who designs
the seats and runs the Drag
Specialties seat company, has
been at it since 1974, back when
these solo saddles were the
newest thing. He knows what
he’s doing and uses nothing but
the finest materials. Most of the
seats are formed with urethane
foam mixed to Kevin’s specifications,
and most of the covering
materials are also made to his
specs. It’s all heavy-duty stuff
for outdoor use and motorcycle
application, and it’s all die-cut
for absolute consistency so it fits
like a glove. Select models even
feature solar-reflective leather
in the seating area, a patented
upholstery material that reduces
surface temperature by as much
as 45-degrees F (7.2-degrees C).
All the seats are built on a heavy,
steel contoured seat base with
a black finish and include an
adjustable front hinge and those
two rear studs for mounting
the springs, which are available
separately. And for those builders
who, for whatever reason,
choose to do their own upholstery
the bare-metal seat pans
are available, too. In both sizes.
will your customers. They’re all in
The TCFI III:
Wide-Band Control
Back in 2007 Harley introduced its new ECM using narrow-band oxygen sensors
for closed-loop control of the air/fuel ratio (AFR). Good news. The bad
part: those narrow-band sensors do their thing over a pretty limited range,
just 14.5 - 15.0 AFR. This is okay for idle and part throttle but the narrow-band
sensors can’t be used at wide-open throttle where the engine requires about 12.5
-12.8 AFR. Daytona Twin-Tec’s TCFI III using Bosch lSU 4.2 wide-band sensors functions
over a much broader AFR range. Everywhere from 10.5 - 19.5 AFR. The TCFI III
and its Bosch sensors can be used under all conditions, including wide-open throttle.
With the TCFI III you can set that AFR to any desired value and do it in every RPM and at
all throttle positions. The software making this possible is user friendly, too. All relevant
tables such as AFR and spark advance (also adjustable with the TCFI III) are displayed
as easy-to-read 3D charts with an accompanying spreadsheet table that’s just as easily
edited. This software is powerful, too. Editing functions allow you to quickly change a
whole range of cells in seconds, for example manipulating 4-degrees of timing within
a certain RPM range with only a few mouse clicks.
Here’s more. The TCFI III will
even auto-tune itself. It’ll “read”
the needs of the motorcycle
it’s on and then inject the correct
amount of fuel based on
feedback from the wide-band
sensors. That auto-tuning can
happen on a dyno with a series
of stepped runs throughout the
RPM and throttle ranges and it
can happen on the road, too,
under actual riding conditions.
Daytona Twin-Tec’s TCFI III Kit.
For racing applications the TCFI
III features a programmable
input and output that can be pre-set for things like a stage RPM limit, ignition-retard
function, even RPM, throttle-position and speed-based switches to control shift lights,
electric shifters or a nitrous system. There’s built-in data logging, as well, with storage
for the last hour of operation at 10 samples-per-second. All this can be downloaded
and analyzed to diagnose problems or track performance. Powerful stuff.
The TCFI III is ideal for lots of custom applications, too. It supports, but doesn’t require,
a data link to the turn signal/security module (TSSM) or an instrument module (IM).
There’s also a standard 12-volt tach output that’s compatible with most aftermarket
tachometers and other popular accessories like shift lights.
Bottom line: Daytona Twin-Tec’s TCFI III solves a host of Harley-Davidson problems all
at once. There are applications for all the bikes needing help–including the increasingly
popular V-Rods–and the TCFI III is in stock now at Parts Europe.
A
flat tire is never any fun. Street bike, dirt
bike, ATV–it doesn’t matter, a flat is going
to ruin anyone’s day. No air equals
no go. Want to avoid that hassle in the
first place? That’s where Slime comes in, or goes
in, actually. Slime Sealants, with applications
for both tires and tubes, is a specially formulated
compound for use in all pneumatic
tires and, once installed, it’ll remain liquid
inside that tube or tire, not hardening
or drying out, and as that tire or tube
rotates, centrifugal force pushes
the sealant out to the tread area
where it creates a layer of protection,
repairing punctures as they
occur. Put in the Slime and say
goodbye to those flat-tire woes.
That life-saving Sealant is just
the beginning of what Slime has
to offer when it comes to tire and
tube maintenance, too. There’s a
full lineup here, everything from
those sealants to conventional
plug and patch kits, to Mini- and
Heavy-Duty Compressors right
through to the crowning touch–
valve-stem caps in a variety of
colors. Parts Europe has it all.
Slime Sealants, available in
8-ounce (226.7 gram) containers,
16-ounce (453.5 gram) containers,
24-ounce (680.3 gram) containers
and 32-ounce (907.1 gram) containers,
will repair punctures up to
1/4-inch (6mm) in size. That’s huge.
Slime does it using an exclusive
Fibro-Seal technology. This blend
of microfibers and binders is carried
to a puncture by the escaping
air pressure where those particles
intertwine to form a plug that’ll
stop air loss dead in its tracks. The
Fibro-Seal lattice, together with
the viscous transportation system
(the “green goo” that gives Slime its
name) tightly packs into the puncture,
instantly repairing flats with
a flexible, long lasting plug. Non-
To prevent
toxic, Slime works in both tube and tubeless tires and it’s
guaranteed effective for two years. Those Slime Sealants
even contain rust and corrosion inhibitors to maintain the
integrity of the wheel rim. It doesn’t take much Slime to
do its thing, either. Only 1.5- to 3-ounces (42.5- 85 grams)
per tire is plenty, depending on the tire size and riding
style, and there’s no mess left behind. A Slime-treated
tire or tube can be cleaned, patched or plugged in
the conventional manner. Of course Slime has those
patches and plugs, as well, in all the sizes. They come
packaged in convenient, economy-priced kits.
Slime Sealants deserve a spot in every rider’s
garage–and in his tires. But the real key to tire
maintenance and long tire life is proper inflation
and Slime also has that covered. The Slime
Inflation Systems offer a quick, portable
and easy way to keep tires pumped up
to spec. The Power Sport Smart Spair,
a versatile, compact inflation system
featuring interchangeable connectors
for multiple power sources, even
includes an 8-ounce (226.7 gram)
bottle of that tire sealant for repairs
on the go. And Slime’s Heavy Duty
Compressor, a powerful 12 Volt/150
PSI compressor, is just that. It’ll inflate
a standard car tire in three minutes.
A 16-foot (4.8 meter) hose with a
quick-release coupler, a bright lED
light for nighttime emergencies, an
accurate and easy-to-read gauge and
an assortment of inflation adapters
are all included. A tough canvas bag
holds it all.
Flat tires are no fun.
You know it, your
customers know it. Set
fLAme deSIGN rotors
Moto-Master’s Flame Design Rotors look great,
there’s no denying that. But there’s lots more
going on here than just those good looks.
Moto-Master, based in the Netherlands,
is way above putting out something that’s just about
appearance. This is a company that made its name on
performance and those Flame Design Rotors, undeniably
good looking, are real performers. They’re the top pick
of top performers worldwide, the rotors used by almost
every major MX Grand Prix team. And it’s not because of
any “gimmick” rotor, no matter how good looking it is.
Moto-Master is all about performance. The good looks,
well, that’s just a bonus.
A Flame Design Rotor, whether it’s for MX, Supermoto or
a street bike is an instant improvement over any standard
OE rotor. Made from specially hardened and tempered
premium stainless steel, the Flame serves up that perfect
combination of feel with more stopping power, all coming
from less pressure at the lever. Because of its design
the Flame also promotes optimal cooling along with
continuous brake pad cleaning, with no tilting of the
pads. The Flame street and track rotors are all 100-percent
compatible with any type of brake pad, too, sintered
bronze, Kevlar or ceramic carbon. It’s form and function
here–with lots of that function.
These are rotors designed to work. The flame-shaped
venting slots and outer perimeter ensure an equal
amount of contact surface between the brake pad and rotor
throughout the whole rotation of the disc. There’s no
fluctuation in the amount of friction during disc rotation.
That means smoother, more predictable braking action
allowing riders to brake harder. The flame design also ensures
that the brake pads are always evenly supported on
the rotor with no tilting under high pressure. Additionally,
Moto-Master has lined up the venting slots in the linear
direction of movement, a design pattern that allows for
oversize slots without any worries about chipping away
at the brake pads or initiating too much initial bite. And
those oversize slots ensure maximum cooling, while
overall bike handling is improved due to the reduction in
weight. Finally, the Flame’s outer perimeter and venting
slots overlap to continuously clean the entire brake pad
contact surface while allowing hot gasses to be immediately
evacuated. Those are the reasons the Flame Design
Rotors work so well, and why they look like they do.
Coming from Moto-Master of course the Flame Design
Rotors are built right. Beginning with that premium quality
stainless steel, specialized laser cutting techniques
provide a razor sharp cut that won’t corrode afterwards.
And disc thickness is always parallel, held to a 0.003mm
margin to eliminate any possibility of brake-lever pulsation.
The disc’s inner carrier is just as good. It’s made with
top-quality aircraft aluminium billet, CNC machined for
maximum strength and minimum weight. The carrier is
corrosion protected with a black anodized finish and the
floaters, arranged in a new lightweight design, are precision
CNC machined to the tightest tolerance.
That’s the Flame, the great looking brake rotor from Moto-
Master that works even better than it looks. For more
than a decade Moto-Master rotors, and their Off-Road/
MX brake pads, have provided riders and racers with the
bolt-on performance boost they want and an immediate
improvement over anything OE. Parts Europe has it all
and the price is always right.
When we first introduced the Flux line of gear as
the ultimate hybrid, positioned right between a fully
vented kit and a traditional kit, we knew it would be a
huge success. Offering serious race performance with
just the right amount of venting, the Flux kit is everything
you'd expect in a premium set of race equipment.
This year we went even further. Introducing all new chassis
designs that fit better, cool better and perform better lap after
lap, moto after moto. We refined, we tested, and then we refined
some more. We sweated over the smallest details to ensure
you'd sweat less and perform more. The new Flux gear is the
next level in performance.

beTTeR SeALING gaskets
If you want something done right, you have to do
it yourself. So when Cometic Gaskets was founded
in 1989 to bring better sealing technology to the
gasket industry, it began by taking all aspects of
gasket-making in-house; from conception to engineering,
tooling, and testing of the final product.
Today, Cometic leads the way in material selection
and gasket design. No sealers are necessary on any of
Cometic’s gaskets – just install the gasket using the recommended
torque specs, and you’re set. Another example of
Cometic’s leadership is the Multi layer Steel head gasket
line. Cometic offers MlS head gaskets with any bore size
you specify in just about any thickness you want.
Cometic engineers the MlS head gasket to work like a
spring when installed on the engine. The gasket is designed
to follow both horizontal and vertical movement
of the head, and actually lifts with the head to maintain
the combustion seal even on high-compression, supercharged
and turbocharged engines.
The MlS head gasket is comprised of three layers of
stainless steel. The outer layers are Viton-coated and embossed.
The center layer or rub layer is uncoated stainless
steel and sets up the overall thickness of the head gasket.
The benefits of using MlS head gaskets include better
heat transfer, little to no bore distortion for a better ring
Cometic MLS (Multi Layer
Steel) head gaskets.
Innovative Technology:
Better Sealing With Cometic
seal, no need for re-torquing, and no comebacks due to
blowout. Another great feature is that when the engine
is next disassembled, you don’t need to scrape off the old
gasket, saving time and eliminating the risk of scratching
or gouging the gasket mating surfaces.
Along with head gaskets, Cometic also manufactures all
the gaskets and seals necessary to completely rebuild your
engine. Another innovative material Cometic produces
mainly for engine case covers is AFM, or Aluminum Foam
Material. It has an aluminum core and is coated on both
sides with a closed-cell foam synthetic Nitrile rubber.
This stuff seals like magic – it’s great for sealing rough or
uneven mating surfaces and is heat resistant up to 121˚C.
AFM has an 85-percent recovery rate and does not require
re-torquing.
If you’ve ever had a fiber base gasket squeeze out or
blow out, Cometic has what you’re looking for. The SlS
(Single layer Steel) base gasket is made from spring steel,
embossed, and Viton coated. like the MlS head gasket,
it’s engineered to move with the cylinder. It won’t squeeze
or blow out and does not require re-torquing.
When you want the best gaskets you can find, get Cometic.
AGm mAINTeNANCe-fRee batteries
In most parts of the northern hemisphere the riding
season is well underway, but there are still a few riders
coming late to the party. Some have had other
obligations, but others let their bike’s battery die
over the winter and have yet to recharge it. Some of those
batteries will never come back to life, however, and when
your customers come in looking for replacements, steer
them toward Drag Specialties AGM maintenance-free
batteries.
Drag Specialties AGM batteries use a special radial grid
technology and are specifically designed for hard-to-start
high-performance engines that need all the cranking
power they can get, so you know they’ll provide more
than enough power to turn over stock engines, even on
the coldest morning.
Thanks to their AGM (absorbed glass mat) construction,
these batteries don’t suffer the fluid loss that conventional
wet-cell batteries do over time. They won’t lose their
charge if they sit on the shelf for too long, either, because
you don’t charge them until you sell them. Each one
comes with an acid pack that you
put in the battery
Maintenance-Free!:
Drag Specialties AGM Batteries
at the time of sale. Once it’s filled, it’s permanently sealed
– no fluid loss, no spillage, and no need to check the fluid
level or top off the battery, ever.
Drag Specialties AGM batteries are built for the long haul.
Their rugged construction gives them long service life as
well as superior vibration resistance, which is especially
important in V-twin engines with irregularly spaced firing
intervals. To make it easier to put them on a charger over
the winter, Drag Specialties batteries come with a quickconnect
harness designed for use with Drag Specialties
battery chargers.
If you’ve ever wrestled the battery in or out of an Fl you’ve
probably asked yourself, “Why doesn’t someone put a
handle on this battery?” Well, someone has. Part number
2113-0209, for ‘97-‘11 FlT, FlHT, FlTR, FlHR, and Harley Fl
trikes comes with a convenient one-piece foldable handle
that makes installing or removing the heavy battery easy.
This battery and two others (2113-0210 and 2113-0211)
also come with new flush-mount terminals that eliminate
the need for spacers, ensuring a secure,
vibration-resistant, direct-path connection.
With all their great features, Drag
Specialties batteries are easy to sell.
You can make them even easier
with a battery display rack. In
about 1/10th of a square
meter of floor space, it holds
a selection of batteries,
and is easy to assemble.
A colorful header card is
included.
qUALITY control cables
There are some parts of a motorcycle you don’t
really think about until they break. Control
cables for example, do their job quietly, with no
fuss or bother, right up until the moment they
stop doing it–and by then you’re in a real predicament.
Drag Specialties control cables are made of the highestquality
components to make sure your customers don’t
find themselves in this situation.
Drag Specialties cables not only get the job done, they
look good doing it. Drag’s braided throttle and idle cables
have chrome-plated polished fittings, tempered steel
inner conduits and inner nylon liners for long service life,
and stainless-steel braiding covered with a clear covering
for abrasion resistance. They come in standard, undersize,
and oversize
lengths for dual- and
single-cable applications,
and are also
available with a black
vinyl outer casing.
Unlike throttle and
idle cables, clutch
cables are subjected to
a lot of stress, primarily
because some Harley
clutches have a heavy
pull. Because a control
cable is essentially one
long friction surface,
it’s important to build
it right to reduce the
effort needed to operate
the clutch. Drag
Specialties High-
Efficiency (HE)
clutch cables are
made so that more
of the effort you apply
at the lever goes to the
clutch, and not the cable
itself.
This is accomplished by
using a high-performance
longitudinal housing and
inner sleeve for superior com-
chrome-plated polished fittings, tempered steel inner conduits
Smooth Operators:
Drag Specialties Control Cables
pression resistance, smoother operation, and a lighter
pull. These cables are available in standard, undersize,
and oversize lengths for stock or custom applications,
and meet or exceed all OEM specifications for fitment,
construction, and endurance. like Drag’s throttle and idle
cables, HE clutch cables come with braided stainless-steel
with a clear covering for abrasion resistance, or in black
vinyl.
Older Harleys can benefit from fitting Drag Specialties
cables, too. With applications for Shovelhead, Panhead,
Knucklehead, and Iron Xls, the Oldbook is your onestop
shop for braided or black vinyl throttle, idle, and
choke cables, as well as HE clutch cables.
All Drag Specialties cables come in Drag packaging
for easy storage behind the counter, and effective
display in front of it. Drag Specialties’ point-ofpurchase
and attractive way to put your stock out front
where your customers are.
away, and total failure follows. So it’s surprising
that so many riders neither know nor care about
what kind of oil they put in their bikes–they’d just as soon
get whatever is on sale rather than pay a little more for
specially formulated motorcycle lubricants. That’s why it’s
important to offer your customers the best motorcycle oil
at a great price, backed by the Drag Specialties name.
Nobody knows V-twins better than Drag Specialties, and
that’s why Drag oil comes in a variety of weights and
formulations to suit every engine and operating environment.
From the coast to the mountains, and everywhere
in between, there’s a Drag Specialties oil that’s right for
the conditions.
All Drag Specialties oils meet warranty performance
Drag Specialties has a complete line of spin-on oil filters
for Big Twins, XLs, and V-Rods. Available in black or
chrome, some filters also come with a 17mm hex nut on
the end for easy installation and removal (pictured).
