Against All Odds:
Ann Kitchel’s Story in Vermont, Germany & with Statesman
Nestled in a small Valley in the Vermont Mountains lies the
little village of South Strafford. Small in size but large
in tradition this charming county years ago supplied the
United States Equestrian team with a steady supply of
International riders. Denny Emerson, Individual Olympic
Gold Medalist Tad Coffi n, Bea DiGrazia, Bea Perkins
all called this small enclave, home. Denny still summers
at his Tamarack Hill Farm and neighbor Huntington Farm,
started in the ‘60’s by Read and Essie Perkins provided
the land and training facilities for the beginning of modern
sanctioned eventing in America.
The Oldenburg Horse
4
1977 and 1980 the grand farm was put on the market in
1983. Ann and her former husband Bill Kitchel purchased
Huntington Farm with the dream of continuing the eventing
tradition and utilizing the successful horse breeding
programs established under the watchful eye of Read
Perkins. Of course breeding for eventing horses quickly
fell into the twilight as Ann had more experience breeding
warmbloods.
Ann was a pioneer in warmblood breeding and was one
of the original advocates of German breeding in North
America. In the 70’s the Hanoverian stallion Gambrinus
(Hesssenstein-Dominik) stood in Maine where she was liv-
ing at the time. When Ann and Bill moved to Vermont in
1979 Gambrinus joined them and stood at Huntingtion
Farm until he died at age 27.
From the onset of her breeding program, Ann had a knack
for selecting top quality mares. Two of these, the outstanding
TB Blue Murmur mare April Murmur, and Fifi ’s
April Song when bred to this grand stallion produced Blue
Abbe, Omar and his full brother the approved stallion Goldrush
ll. These horses were beautifully trained and ridden
in dressage by Shelly Francis. Blue Abbe had the distinction
of striking awe and fear in the eyes of her competitors
when she was in the entry list, winning practically all dressage
shows she entered including Devon. Omar trained
and showed in dressage up the levels all the way to Grand
Prix and although never presented as a stallion he did
breed a little and produced the eventing mare of the year
Bally Mar out of Bally Thorn, a daughter of the Olympic
Gold medal mare Bally Cor. At a slightly more advanced
age Omar became a school master for the Opera Singer
Winnie Grey.
Ann also stood the Welsh Cob stallion Derwen Rebound
owned by the late Gordon Heard of Crosswinds Farm, Lyme
NH, whose best offspring was Another Story (Free Swing-
Derwen Rebound), ridden by Heather Mason. Grand Prix
stallion Goldfuerst by Goldstern and out of a Don Carlos
mare joined the Huntington Roster at the largesse of
Steve Kanikkeberg. Weltstern, For Sure, L’Andiamo and
Landwerder also spent happy years with Ann at this wonderful
Farm.
Another good mare Ann aquired at the Vechta auction is
the SPR mare “Little Star” (Santander-Rubinstein). This
mare, when bred to Don Larino produced Ann’s second
licensed stallion, Don Massimo, licensed at the Korung in
Vechta in November 2007.
Characteristically Ann has been uncompromising in her
quest for excellence. Her eye is so assured that her we
can always count on her good choices. More recently, Donnervogel
(Donnerhall-Ex Libris), SPS Lady Liberty (Lord
Liberty G- Sion) LaHabanera (Lord Sinclair-Castro) Gille
The Oldenburg Horse
5
(Goldfuerst-Gambrinus), all trained and ridden by Deborah
Dean-Smith are only a few of many good horses she
has either bred or imported, including many top quality
breeding mares. Donnervogel who was bred by Dr. Med. J.
Hartmann and is now owned by Deb and Linda Wondracks
has earned scores as high as 77% at Intermediate II, and
was the FEI Champion for two days in a row at the 2008
Spring Green Mountain Horse Assoc. Dressage Show.
Ann was not born with a silver spoon in her mouth. Against
all odds she carried a crippling mortgage and staggering
bills on the farm by herself, and with the help of many
friends over the years kept up her enthusiasm and devotion
of the horse. She irrevocably states that without
Shelly Francis riding her talented young horses in the early
days, thereby putting her on the map, she would not
have the farm or horses today. It has taken grueling hard
work through thick and thin, but with a plan, an excellent
eye, positive attitude and much hard work she has proven
it can be done
Ann’s current success as the breeder of Statesman then
comes as no surprise. This superb stallion comes from a
mare Ann picked out at her fi rst auction. She qualifi ed her
for Rastede and went on to fi nish in the Brilliant ring. This
State Premium mare, Weissendra (Donnerschwee-Titus)
bred by Maximillian Graf von Merveldt, was her fi rst success
in Germany but far from the last. Out of 22 foals
born in Germany she has had bred 16 premiums. Not an
easy feat in this tough market. Ann spends long hours
carefully choosing the stallions she will breed her mares
to, and Statesman (her 3rd homebred approved stallion)
was the best resulting horse so far – more on his success
and story in the following reports. Weissendra is in foal
to Sir Donnerhall for a 2009 foal that we are all looking
forward to seeing.
Ann’s has a favorite expression that she uses all the time,
“well what’s not to like” ? Now I will now pose it back to
her. What’s not to like about Ann?
Ann we all think you are the best!! Congratulations on
your brilliant successes.
The 2008 Bundeschampionate: Success for Oldenburg...
The annual Bundeschampionate which is the National
Championships for young horses in Warendorf, Germany
lived up to it’s reputation as being a venue to see the
best of the best in young horses. They come to compete
in Dressage, Jumping, Eventing, and Driving, and it is an
incredible honor to succeed here. In September, 2008,
hundreds of horses and ponies who had qualifi ed over the
Spring and Summer gathered together at the headquarters
of the German Riding Federation and former Olympic
training center to see who would come away with the title
of German Champion. Both Oldenburg horses and Weser-
Ems Ponies did very well and some did in fact earn that
prestigious title.
In the Riding Horse Classes Oldenburgs did very well
starting with one of the most prestigious and toughest
divisions, the young stallions. Breeding Verbands do what
they can to support the entries of their top young stallions
so that they can earn the bragging rights of having
produced the immense talent that comes out of the top of
these classes.
STATESMAN - Bronze Medal, 3 yr. old Stallions
In the 3 year old Riding Horse Stallions, the remarkable
stallion Statesman (Stedinger x St.Pr.St. Weissendra
Campino WE and Victoria Klatt e
The Oldenburg Horse
6
(Donnerschwee)) was ridden by the head auction rider
for the Oldenburg Verband, Heiko Klausing, and because
of Heiko’s riding and the stallion’s powerful, uphill canter
and beautifully expressive trot, they were a close second
in the qualifi ers on Friday.
One needs to remember not only that these are 3 year
olds, but that the judges are not judging the potential
of the horses in front of them, they are judging the performance
they see as they would in a dressage test on
that particular day. If a young stallion is a bit “full of it”
and makes some mistakes, then the score will refl ect that
even if the judges comment on the remarkable potential
they see for the horse’s future.
Statesman was bred by and is owned by Ann Kitchel of
Huntington Farm in Vermont, and she was there with
her friend Monnie Gleason and Clemens August Graf von
Merveldt. The story of Ann Kitchel and her relationship
with the Merveldt’s goes back 7 years to an Oldenburg
auction in Vechta. She fell for a beautiful States Premium
mare named Weissendra and bid on her at the Oldenburg
Elite Auction not knowing yet if she should ship her back
to her farm in Vermont, or if she should try to fi nd a suitable
place to board her in Germany where she could begin
a breeding program there.
She met the breeder of Weissendra, Maximillian Graf von
Merveldt, and decided the mare could happily stay with
him and his family at their estate in Vechta which is known
as Gut Füchtel. Graf Maximillian von Merveldt is the former
breeding director of the Oldenburg Verband, and this
fact gave Ann the confi dence that the mare would be in
good hands.
All of them were all bursting with pride as Statesman
entered the arena for the Finals under Heiko on Sunday
morning, and was selected to be one of only 3 stallions to
come back for the afternoon to be judged by two guest
riders. The spokesman for the judges talked about how
special Statesman is. He remarked on his very exceptional
uphill and powerful canter which he said would have normally
received a perfect score of 10, but that on this day,
he was a tiny bit unsteady in the contact at times so they
gave him a 9.5. He noted that he felt it wouldn’t take long
for Statesman to improve in that contact with the training.
He was then given an amazing 9.0 for his trot and a
9.0 for his conformation. His overall score put him in third
place by only .5 of a point.
Everyone in attendance knew Statesman was going to be
offered for sale at the upcoming 69th Oldenburg Elite Fall
Auction. Many of the trainers and agents for some of the
& Weser-Ems Too!
top stallion stations in the world were on hand, and they
were clearly watching Statesman in the fi nals giving everyone
the feeling that the upcoming auction would be an
event to be spoken about for years to come.
ALICE - Silver Medal, 3 yr. old Mares and Geldings
Alice (Florencio x Alabaster) ridden by Sandra Frieling was
super in both the qualifi ers and fi nals. She was very correct
in her hind leg and showed an expressive trot and
canter. Her walk was also ground covering with an expressive
stride. She received 9.0’s for her canter and walk,
and an 8.5 for her trot. She and the leader were neck and
neck throughout most of the competition. She is owned by
Dietmar Weinrich and was bred by Engelbert Boeske.
SANTORINI -
Champion, 4 yr. old Mares and Geldings
It is really interesting that both Santorini and Statesman
are sired by Stedinger and out of Donnerschwee mares.
Santorini also was amazing in his canter work, and since
he has had another year of training under his belt, he
went out there and got the perfect 10 for his canter! Not
to mention a 9.5 for his trot, 9.0 for his training, and another
9.0 for his presentation. Going into the fi nal round
with the guest riders, he had a 2 point advantage, but it
was certainly not necessary because the guest riders gave
him a total score of 19 points out a possible 20! Santorini
was ridden by Heiner Schiergen, is owned by Volger
Schmidt and was bred by Hans-Ludwig Beilken.
CARIBIK 7 - Bronze Medal, 6 yr. old Jumpers
Caribik 7 (Come On x Lancer II) is a gray Oldenburg mare
who was ridden by Karl Brocks. They pulled one rail in the
fi nal round, but were the fastest completing the round in
36.37 seconds. The judges awarded them a score of 8.7
placing them just behind the two leaders. Caribik 7 was
bred by Georg Dierker and is owned by Bernfried Erdmann.
5 yr. old Jumper Divsion - 4th, 5th, & 6th Places
The OS, or Oldenburg International Society of Jumping
horses was only formed just over 5 years ago. The fi rst
registered jumpers given the OS brand and registration
were making their debut at this Bundeschampionate in
the jumper fi eld, and they did very well. The breeders
have the choice of registering their foals with either the
Oldenburg main Verband or the new OS. In the case of the
4th placed horse in the 5 yr. old jumper division he was an
Oldenburg. Appearance 2 (Armitage x Levantos I) put in
two super rounds where the judges praised her highly for
how quiet and rhythmical she was throughout the round
under her rider Johannes Ehning.
The 5th placed horse was an OS gelding, Askaban 15 (Armitage
x Renville) who had a fantastic fi rst round earning
The Oldenburg Horse
an 8.7 under his rider Markus Renzel. As with Appearance
a touch of the rail that came down on one fence brought
the score of his second round down to a 7.9, and he ended
up with a 16.6 overall. The sixth placed horse was the
OS stallion, Leopoldo 6 (Ludwig von Bayern x Lordanos).
This horse has a lot of scope and power, but as the judges
noted needs to smooth it out a bit between the fences. His
fi rst round score was 8.4 and the second an 8.0. He will be
one to watch for the future for sure.
CASINO ROYALE K WE -
Champion, 3 yr. old Pony Stallions
Casino Royale is an absolutely beautiful palomino stallion
who was stunning in the fi nal round. Ridden and owned
by Danica Duen he had been very close in the scoring to
the silver medalist, Batida de Coco WE, a great moving
black Weser-Ems stallion ridden by Petra Hinrichs. In the
end Casino Royale edged out Batida de Coco by only .5
points, but it was enough to make him the champion. He
was bred by Hermann Koopmeiners who shared a group
hug with Casino and Danica in the medal ceremony.
The Sons and Daughters of Constantin
Standing at only 13.2 hands, the Weser-Ems Welsh pony
stallion, Constantin, has become a legend in his own time.
Not only has he produced very successful Welsh B ponies,
it was discovered years ago that in breeding him to larger
Oldenburg mares, he could produce outstanding German
Riding Ponies who have won European Championships and
German National Championships in dressage, jumping,
eventing and driving. This year was no exception either.
The Oldenburg Horse
CARRIE WE - Champion 6 yr. old Dressage Ponies
Carrie WE (Constantin x Granulit), Ridden by Leonie Richter
this mare is not just an outstanding type she has wonderful
gaits. Scoring 8.5’s for her trot, walk and general
impression the little mare ended with a total score of 8.2.
Carrie WE was bred by Aloys Thoben and is owned by Annika
Schäfer of Bissendorf, Germany.
CINDERELLA WE -
Silver Medal 5 yr. old Dressage Ponies
The mare, Cinderella WE (Constantin x Donnerhall), demonstrated
how the breeding of Constantin with a mare
by the legendary Oldenburg stallion, Donnerhall, could
produce something really special. Under her rider, Grete
Linnemann she earned an incredible 9.0 for her trot and
general impression. With the rest of the scores being 8.0’s
this lead to an overall 8.4 to secure the silver medal.
CAMPINO WE - Champion 6 yr. old Jumper Ponies
Another champion sired by the fantastic stallion, Constantin,
was Campino (Constantin x Grannox) who made this
a repeat from last year when he was the champion of the
5 year old jumpers at the 2007 Bundeschampionate. Victoria
Klatte, his rider, was bursting with pride once again
over her super little jumper. The judges were extremely
impressed by his form and grace over and in-between the
fences. Campino scored an overall amazing 8.8 which was
not a bad follow up to the 9.0 he and Victoria received
last year! Campino was bred by Helmut Bruns and was
purchased by Victoria’s father, Guido Klatte at a 2006 Oldenburg
Elite Auction.
The Dream Story of Ann
& Statesman Continued at the 08 Fall Elite and Winter Auctions
The dream no breeder ever dares to dream was realized
for Ann Kitchel at the Fall Elite Auction with the wonderful
stallion that she bred, Statesman. At the beginning
of the year Statesman was licensed in the Under Saddle
Licensing, and from there his rider and caretaker, Clemens
August Graf von Merveldt continued to ride and work
with him preparing him for the Oldenburg State Championships
held in Rastede in July. There Statesman qualifi ed
for the Bundeschampionate, and was turned over shortly
thereafter to the Oldenburg head auction trainer and rider,
Heiko Klausing.
As was already mentioned in the Bundeschampionate report,
Statesman and Heiko earned the Bronze medal in
the 3 year old Stallion division, a very prestigious accomplishment.
Heiko continued to train the horse after that,
and when he presented him at some of the fi rst training
sessions for the Fall Elite Auction it was clear that the stallion
was only getting stronger and better.
The Fall Elite Auction always begins with a wonderful Gala
Evening show the Friday evening before the auction. This
year there was the funny dog and pony show, “Die Toni
Show” from Switzerland, a beautiful performance by the
2008 World Championship Vaulting Team, “Team Ingels-
berg” on their Oldenburg gelding, Arador, and a dramatic
dance between a Spanish Dancer and her partner riding an
Andalusion stallion. Also making an appearance was Ann
Katrin Linsenhoff who was there to be awarded and congratulated
by the Oldenburg Verband not only for her riding,
but for her charitable work with UNICEF. She came in
driving the four-in-hand team of the 2008 Reserve World
Champion driver, Ludwig Weinmayr who was of course sitting
next to her in the carriage.
After this was a wonderful presentation of the 2008 World
Champion of the 5 year old dressage horses, Desperado,
ridden by Nadine Plaster. Nadine and her partner bought
Desperado at the 2007 Fall Elite Auction so it was quite an
event for all who work so hard selecting and preparing the
horses for the auctions to see this horse come back one
year later as a World Champion.
The evening was concluded with a performance by the
stallion Stedinger and his sons. Santorini showed everyone
there why he had so recently become the German National
Champion of the 4 year old mares and geldings with
his enormous trot and rhythmic canter, and then the lights
dimmed, and the spotlight was focused on Statesman. At
only three years old this young stallion showed an amaz-

ing amount of maturity as a live band played Beethoven’s
9th Symphony, the anthem of the European Union, and
everyone in the audience lit up sparklers. It was a magical
end to the evening as the music transitioned to the full
orchestra version, and Statesman showed off his incredible
canter and powerful trot as he left the arena while
the auction director and auctioneer, Uwe Heckmann bid
everyone a good evening.
As everyone gathered the next afternoon for the start of
the auction, the tension over the fi rst horse, Statesman,
was palpable. It was clear that whoever was going to win
the bid for him was going to have to put up a good fi ght.
Ann was in the audience during the bidding and as the
price crossed over the previous Oldenburg auction record
the emotions of she and her friends were those of disbelief.
In tears Ann kept watching as the hammer went down
at the breathtaking price of 400,000 Euro.
Uwe tried to have her come down to the fl oor with Statesman’s
new owners, but she said she could not. So many
years of struggling to pay the bills and keep her dreams
alive left her a little too weak in the knees, so she stood
and held her hands in the air in thanks. She was joined by
Clemens von Merveldt, Vanessa Spencer, Meredith Meade,
Deborah Fallender and Dane Lawrence who all were ecstatic
for her.
Michael Waehnert and Verena Heinz of Lux Dressage, a
dressage training facility in Luxembourg, were equally as
excited about their new stallion. They were accompanied
by their trainers Sascha Schulz and Christoph Umbach
who had been clearly impressed by Statesman and his
talent.
Verena Heinz let everyone know that they want the ab-
solute best for this up coming stallion. Since the auction
he has completed his 30 Day Test in Schleickau where he
won the dressage division out of 36 stallions. He received
an incredible overall score of 9.03 having received 9.13’s
for his character and trot, and 9.63’s for his canter and
rideability. Verena said they hope to see him back at the
Bundeschampionate next year, and have decided to have
him stand at the world renown stallion station, Gestüt
Vorwerk.
Ann was not the only American that did well in selling their
horses at this auction. Deborah Fallender was quite happy
about selling her fi lly in this auction, Rose of America
(Royal Diamond x Algave (A Jungle Prince)), who was also
born at the Merveldt’s farm.
Marta Kauffman of Los Angeles, can also be very pleased
with the sale of her premium stallion, #44 Spezial Dark
(Sandro Hit x Pik Donga (Duntroon)). He was sold to the
Olympic Japanese rider, Meiko Yagi, who rode for Japan
in the 2008 Olympic Games held in Hong Kong. She has
also won the National Dressage Championships of Japan
11 times.
On the buying end, Patrick Burssens of Wellington, Florida
returned to bid for clients from Mexico, Venezuela, Argentina
and Florida. He was joined by his daughter, wife
and friends who as always really enjoyed themselves. He
started out by going for the third highest priced horse at
the auction, #3 Stepdance (Stedinger x St.Pr.St. La Donata
(Don Gregory)). He bid well, but the Bechtolsheimers
from Great Britain were determined and bought the horse
bred by Zuchtstall Kotschofsky for the knockdown price of
140,000 Euro.
The next horse Patrick went for was a successful bid. A client
of his from Mexico will surely be very happy with the
expressive gelding, #18 Danke Schön (Depardieu x Ultrafein
(Ex Libris)). Patrick who is originally from Belgium
rode on the Mexican Pan American Team and represented
Mexico in the World Cup. He now operates the International
Dressage Academy in Wellington, Florida and is the
head trainer there.
For Argentina, Patrick was successful in bidding for the
wonderful mare, #30 Die Schöne (Don Kennedy x Ridonna
(Donnerwerther)). This mare is sired by Don Kennedy
who also sired the top selling horse at the 2008 Summer
Mixed Sales Auction, Danseur Royale.
The very charming young lady, Christina Vinios, also returned
to the auction hall in Vechta and this time she will
not be going home empty handed! As a matter of fact,
she might not be going home at all for a while. She was
successful in bidding for the wonderful mare, #15 Cari-
na (Don Primero x Carmelita (Castro)), and she plans on
staying in Germany to train and ride for some time. Her
grandmother, Jean Vinios, was of course on the phone and
was elated. Jean is the owner of the 2007 USEF 3rd Level
Horse of the Year and now Prix St. George gelding, Ringo
Starr. Christina’s mother will also be happy with her fantastic
purchase of the colt, #31 Quater Boy (Quaterback x
Cinderella (Castro)).
Americans and Canadians also came for the outstanding
jumpers offered at this auction. Canadian Hunter Jumper
rider, Tanya Harding, was defi nitely in a buying mood
and was very happy to win the bid for one of the top
selling jumpers, #54 Lady Mecklenburg (Licanto x Rama
(Ramiro’s Match)). Not only has this mare already been
successful in the shows herself, she is the full sister to the
premium stallion, Lord Mecklenburg.
Tanya also purchased the beautiful and rhythmical gelding,
Cool Running (Contesimo x Mexikana (Contender)).
Cool Running has already had a great deal of success in
the jumper shows for young horses in Germany, and we
know that he will be at the top of the Canadian circuit in
the future!
Heading to California will be another of the top jumpers,
#11 Cafe’s Quality (Cafe au Lait x Sinfonie (Silvio I)) who
sold to Linda York. She and her friends were ecstatic over
this purchase. She was accompanied by Christie Reiff,
Kristin Barreto, Peter Gotze, Holly and HJ Weiland, Dana
Smith, and their agent whom they give much credit to in
selecting these great horses, Bjorn Cordes. Linda is a long
time patron of the Oldenburg auctions in Vechta and said
she would be happy to return again in the future.
The Oldenburg Horse
Another long time friend of the auctions is Canadian
Grand Prix Dressage rider, Evi Strasser, who was of course
on hand again. She successfully bid for the expressive
gelding, #28 D’Artagnon le Noir (Don Cardinale x Aliona
(Heraldik xx)). He stems from a very successful mare line,
and has already done very well in the dressage shows for
young horses in Germany.
Grand Prix dressage rider and trainer Debra Wiedmaier of
New York also attended the auction. She was mostly there
to have fun, but did pick up a super colt for a client from
New York. #32 Freibeuter (Florencio x St.Pr./El.St. Fabrice
(Freiherr)) is not only sired by the World Champion, Florencio,
but he stems from the same mare line as the Reserve
Champion of the 2007 Oldenburg Stallion licensing,
Fackeltanz. This also makes this colt very closely related
to the Champion of the fi rst ever Mare Performance Test in
North America, Florenzio, owned by Nancy Holowesko.
The story of the Weser-Ems ponies in this auction deserves
some note as well. The fi rst pony up for bid was
#39 Do My Best (Merck B.S. x Helma (Kompas Marco)).
This seven year old pony amazed everyone as he strutted
across the diagonal doing one tempis as if it were as easy
as skipping. He has won novice level jumper classes and
obviously has some talent for dressage as well. He sold to
a family from Germany whose 6 year old son was invited
by the auctioneer, Uwe Heckmann, to come up to his auction
stand and help him drop the gavel.
The Lux-Dressage Team wasn’t fi nished with their purchase
of Statesman. Together they bought the outstanding
beautiful black Weser-Ems pony stallion, Hennes (Henry x
Laura (Balthasar)) who was very strongly sought after not
only for his looks, but for his three strong gaits as well.
THE 45TH WINTER MIXED SALES AUCTION
The 2008 Winter Mixed Sales Auction held on December
6th was a very successful one. Although the fi nancial crisis
was well under way, the quality of the horses helped
to keep the overall turnover for the auction very high. The
strengthening of the dollar at the time also helped the US
buyers to come back into the game.
One veteran in the world of top sport horse breeding and
Vechta Auctions who returned was Nancy Gooding of Plum
Creek Hollow Farm in Colorado who was very happy about
her purchase of the top States Premium Mare, Ronda Gold
(Carry Gold x St.Pr./El.St. Ricena (Landor S)). The mare is
from the very successful mare line of Richonse who produced
the former German National Young Horse Champion
and the 2008 Grand Prix of Mannheim winner, Lumos.
Also coming from this same mare line is the mare Riwera
OLD who was a participant in the World Championships for
young dressage horses.
Ronda Gold is currently in foal to Clinton I so she and
her foal will defi nitely be a nice addition to Nancy’s already
very successful breeding program which not only
produces top jumpers through stallions such as her Con
Capilot, but top dressage prospects as well. The fantastic
stallion Weltissimo was purchased by Nancy at a Vechta
auction, and then won the dressage portion of his stallion
performance test with a remarkable 146.49 receiving
scores such as 9.5 for rideability, 10 for character, 9.33 for
walk and trot, and a 9 for his canter.
Weltissimo went on to be the Reserve National German
Champion for the 5 year old Dressage Horses at the 2001
Bundeschampionate in Warendorf, and placed 3rd the following
year under Susan Draper Pape. He continued on
to a successful Grand Prix career in Germany under both
Susan Pape and Rudolf Zeilinger. Nancy has since sold the
Ronda Gold. Photo: Kiki Beelitz
stallion, but he was an integral part of her program.
The top riding horse in this Winter Auction was #3, Stanfort
(Sir Donnerhall x China (Roadster)) who sold to Sweden
for the price of 75,000 Euro. In total more than 50%
of the horses will be exported out of Germany showing
how international the demand for top Oldenburg horses
are. Horses will be heading to Turkey, Finland, Poland,
Iran, North America and throughout Europe.
The team from Luxembourg that bought Statesman was
on hand again in this auction purchasing two horses. The
trainers Sasha Schulze and Christoph Umbach and their
partners in Lux-Dressage, Michael Waehnert and Verena
Heinz will be taking home #66 RSB Dryander (Donnerschwee
x El.St. Calaida (Alabaster)) and #1, Shantaram
(Sir Donnerhall x Edella K (Rohdiamant)).
Ann Kitchel herself decided to re-invest some of what
she so wonderfully earned in the sale of Statesman. She
bought the 3rd placed mare of the 2008 Brilliant ring, St.Pr.
St. Remember (Depardieu x Rebecca (Le Matin)) who was
shown in the riding horse collection. She is a super mare
and Ann is excited about the prospect of breeding her to
Statesman this Spring.
Another happy American buyer is Marne Martin-Tucker
who purchased the fabulous mare with a very active hind
leg, Jamaika (Jazz Time x Diane Lena (Latimer)). With her
interesting bloodlines and three super gaits she will be a
great addition to Marne’s training and breeding program.
Marne does a great job for the Oldenburg Horse Breeders’
Society every year with the Year End Awards program,
and we are certain that she will have fun with this new
mare.
In total 9 horses will be heading for a new life in the United
States and 4 to Canada which helped the total sales to
reach 1.17 Million Euro.

The 2008
Oldenburg Stallion Days: Phenomenal Stallions for the Future
The rain turned into snow as the 2008 Oldenburg Stallion
Days got underway, and when the stallions were brought
out it was as if everyone had made their way through the
wardrobe and entered another world; a world fi lled with
excitement and anticipation for what would turn out to be
an almost magical event.
On Thursday, the 44 candidates for Oldenburg and 26 for
the OS who had already passed the pre-selection process
began their evaluation on the pavement for the Haupt
Körung (Main Stallion Licensing). Before the weather deteriorated
too much, all of them were able to be presented
on the outdoor pavement so that their trot and walk on
the hard ground could be judged.
From there everyone moved indoors where a revolution in
the evaluation process took place. Never before had the
stallions been lunged for a stallion committee, but it was
determined that this could give the committee valuable
insight into the stallion’s ability to balance himself in all
three gaits on a circle. This also gave the committee an
excellent chance to examine the quality of the gaits and
the stallion’s natural throughness.
The stallion trainers and owners were given specifi c crite-
The Oldenburg Horse
14
ria concerning the side reins that they were to use. Some
tended to have them a little shorter than the prescribed
length and others a little longer. According to the Dr.
Schulze-Schleppinghof their doing this affected the stallion’s
evaluation so he did not feel the need to correct
anyone as they lunged the stallions. The trainers simply
needed to be aware that when the side reins are too short
the stallion will not be able to swing over his back as well,
and when they are too long they will tend to look around
and lose their balance. Of course none of the cases were
extreme. There were only small variations.
Since this is a new event President Weerda made it clear
that much concerning the lunging would be up for discussion.
After the licensing was over he said that next year
they would make the lunging circles bigger, and it was not
clear if the OS would continue it at all. One of the founding
committee members of the Springpferdzuchtverband Oldenburg
International (OS) which is a spinoff of the Oldenburg
Verband that focuses on promoting the breeding of
top jumpers, Paul Schockemoehle, felt that the focus for
the OS should be placed more on the jumping. He was not
convinced that the ability of the young jumper stallions to
be lunged well had much bearing on their potential jumping
ability in the future as they matured.
It was immediately brought up however, that number 66,
who was presented for the OS licensing had beautiful,
rhythmic gaits, and an excellent ability to balance himself
on the circle. Mr. Schockemöhle smiled, and just noted
that this horse was an exception on every level. He was
simply an “all around horse”. This stallion’s expressive,
elastic gaits could have easily been grouped together with
some of the better dressage stallions from the Oldenburg
licensing group.
The next event for the stallions took place the following
day. Each of them was evaluated at liberty in the hall so
that the judges could again get a good look at the stallion’s
gaits, but this time with no interference. They were
then each asked to free jump, and when 8 of them had
done this they all came back in for a “walk ring” where the
judges could get another good look at their walks. As each
walk ring concluded the judges announced which stallions
were going to be licensed and which were not.
When number 66 came in for the free jumping, the feeling
that he could be a champion was more than confi rmed.
He set himself up beautifully and jumped with incredible
scope and form. This ability and his cool character
combined with a healthy enthusiasm for jumping caused
the crowd to explode into applause. His breeder, Reinhard
Mahnel, seemed to know what would come the next
morning, but no one could know what was about to take
place the next afternoon in the auction.
Number 66 is sired by the Holsteiner stallion, Last Man
Standing (Lovari x Alandia (Landgraf I)) who shows
Landgraf I and Capitol I twice each in his bloodlines. His
dam is Modela, a mare who is line bred twice to Cor de la
Bryere and also shows Ramiro and Ladykiller xx, the sire
of Landgraf I, in her mare line.
The Oldenburg dressage stallion that stood out the most
on the lunge was number 18. This colt is sired by Fuerst
Heinrich and is out of St.Pr.St. Maradonna (Donnerhall x
St.Pr./El.St. Marella (Classiker)) the full sister to St.Pr./
El.St. Maradita, the dam of last year’s champion, Sieger
Hit. This is a well known mare line that as not only produced
these two amazing colts, but many States Premium
and Brilliant Ring mares as well. St.Pr.St. Maradonna herself
was the third placed mare in the 2001 Brilliant Ring.
All of this wonderful breeding really paid off in this colt
who was sold for a record price under the name “Fürstenball”
at the 2006 Elite Foal Auction. The Danish breeder,
Lone Boegh-Henricksen bought him and left him with Johannes
Westendarp who raised him and prepared him for
this licensing.
Fürstenball was incredible on the lunge. He fl oated ef-
The Oldenburg Horse
fortlessly in the trot and showed a wonderful ability to
come underneath himself in the transitions into canter. His
canter was nicely balanced , uphill, and his back stayed
relaxed and swinging in everything he did in spite of the
relatively charged atmosphere. His walk was incredible as
well; beautiful cat like movement through his whole body
and a huge overstep.
His movement was spectacular at liberty, and his jump
was really not too bad. However, it was as he was being
trotted in hand that he earned the accolades from the
audience. The crowd was defi nitely impressed with his expressive
movement and elastic swing.
Also making a good impression was #35, a colt bred and
owned by Xavier Marie. He was exceptionally expressive
in his trot work, but was a bit too tense in the canter on
the lunge. This caused him to not be as balanced and
fl owing as Fürstenball, but his walk was very good, and
both his trot and canter looked fantastic at liberty. He is
sired by Sir Donnerhall and is out of St.Pr.St. Carmina
(Rubin Royal x Cascaya (In Extenso)).
On Saturday morning the top three OS stallions and the top
10 Oldenburg stallions were called back into the Premium
ring to be ranked. The top 10 Oldenburg stallions came in
fi rst in trot one by one, and then all of them were asked
2008 Hauptpremium Stallion, San Amour. Photo: Law
to come in together in walk so that the judges could give
them one last look and decide who would be champion.
There was a lot of discussion on their part which left the
audience hanging for a long time. Slowly but surely however,
they started to ask one to move in front of the other,
and in the end they asked number 18, Fürstenball to
move to the front. The crowd responded loudly to show
their overwhelming support for this decision.
The breeder of Fürstenball, Georg Sieverding of Emstek,
Germany, was thrilled and looked almost stunned that he
was repeating the tremendous honor of having bred the
Oldenburg licensing champion. Lone Boegh-Henricksen
was beside herself with joy, and made it clear to everyone
that Fürstenball was very much not for sale. Many thought
what she paid for him as a foal was far too much, but it
turned out to be a real bargain.
The Reserve Champion (1b) was Xavier Marie’s colt, number
35, who once again impressed everyone with his expressive
trot. Behind him was number 5 (1c) - Dimaggio
x St.Pr./El.St. Schirla (Landadel) who had a wonderful
topline and good conformation. He was bred by Heinrich
Schütte and is owned by Gestüt Vorwerk.
The 4th placed Premium Oldenburg stallion (1d) was the
very light typed, long legged #34 - Sir Donnerhall x Lady
Ashley (Painter’s Row xx) bred and owned by Wilhelm
Hoffrogge.
The 5th placed Premium Oldenburg stallion (1e) was none
other than the full brother to Sir Donnerhall who was anything
but normal. He was interestingly sold by his breeder
and owner Maik Kanitzky just before the licensing to the
Hanoverian State Stud, Landgestüt Celle. This stallion was
The Oldenburg Horse
16
beautifully balanced on the lunge and showed of his expression
and talent at liberty.
The 6th placed Premium Oldenburg stallion (1f) was #13,
a very impressive stallion with wonderful gaits and type.
He was the German National Foal Champion in 2006 and
was sold by his breeder, Ewald Grotelüschen at the Oldenburg
Elite Foal Auction to Elisabeth Max-Theurer of Austria.
He stems from the predominant mare line of Elfi who produced
the stallion Depardieu as well as countless States
Premium mares and the top selling fi lly, Elfenschau, at the
2007 Elite Foal Auction.
The other Premium stallions were ranked as follows:
1g - #43 Chambertin x El.St. Love Girl (Landadel). Breeder:
Hans Vahrmann. Owner: Heinrich Klatte
1h - #37 Stedinger x Farona (Rohdiamant). Breeder: Hubert
Ortmann. Owner: Gerd Sosath
1i - #41 Carthago x Peggy-Anne (Continue). Breeder/
Owner: Gestüt Lewitz
1j - #20 Fürst Heinrich x Donauwelt (Welt Hit I O). Breeder/Owner:
Heidi Schiele
One may notice that two of these last stallions were jumpers
for the Oldenburg Verband. There were only 8 jumpers
accepted by the Oldenburg Verband this year, and out of
those only 5 were licensed. Paul Schockemöhle commented
in the Press Conference that he would like to see the
Oldenburg Verband not take any jumpers next year, and
have the two different organizations be split purely on the
lines of jumpers and dressage horses. President Weerda
was not in agreement, however.
At the moment it is up to the breeders to register their
foals with either the OS or the Oldenburg Verband. If they
are bred to jump, then President Weerda feels they should
still have the chance to be presented. It is clear that for
next year this will happen, but it did sound as if this point
would be up for discussion in the future.
Following the presentation and rankings of the Oldenburg
stallions, the three Premium OS stallions were also
brought in one by one in trot and then all together in walk.
Because of the strict standards, only 10 stallions had been
licensed by the OS out of the group of 26 that had been
presented, and it was decided that only three were worthy
of the Premium title.
In this case it didn’t take long for the committee to decide
upon the champion. Number 66 was the clear winner
in all categories, and when it was announced the crowd
cheered in total approval. The Reserve Champion was the
beautifully typed #58 (Chacco-Blue x Piano II), and the
third premium stallion was the large and bold jumper #51
(Argentinus x Exorbitant xx). Both of which also earned a
great deal of approval from the audience.
Once the licensing and Premium rings were concluded the
annual awarding of the 2008 Hauptpremium or “High Premium”
awards began. These awards are given to 5 year
old stallions based on not only their own performance, but
the quality of their foals.
In the jumping category the two fi nalists were ranked:
Haupt Premium - Collado (Cassini I x Landgraefi n
(Landgraf)) bred by Heinz-Theo Feddermann and owned
by Heinrich Klatte.
1b - Carenzo (Calido x Fraganzia (Freedom)) bred by ZG
Hagenah and owned by Gestuet Sprehe.
In the dressage category the three fi nalists were ranked:
Haupt Premium - San Amour (Sandro Hit x St.Pr./El.St.
Puppenfee (Plaisir d’Amour)) bred by Britta Budeus-Wiegert
and owned by Paul Schockemoehle.
1b - Swarovski (Sandro Hit x St.Pr./El.St. Herzdame (Don
Gregory)) bred by Gottfried Wessjohann and owned by
Gestuet Sprehe
1c - Rosandro (Rosario x Saniza (Sandro Hit)) bred by
Gestuet Lewitz and owned by Sissy Max-Theurer of Austria.
As these awards wrapped up everyone settled in for a nice
long lunch break, but outside the snow began to really
pile up. It was a very successful licensing where all could
agree both of the champions were amazing stallions for
the future of the OS and Oldenburg breeding programs.
As these lunchtime discussions went on, it started to turn
into a winter wonderland for the afternoon auction.
Le Champ Ask Sells for a Record 1.1 Million Euro
In only it’s sixth year of existence, the Springpferdezuchtverbandes
Oldenburg-International or “OS” has made
history with the Champion of the 2008 Stallion Licensing
who will now be known as ‘Le Champ Ask’ after being
purchased by Stutteri Ask - the jumping stallion station
of Blue Hors.
The OS branded stallion, #66 was impressive from the
fi rst moment of the testing. The stunning presence of this
stallion along with his expressive trot and balanced canter
on the lunge immediately grabbed everyone’s attention.
Of course the second day of testing really clinched it for
the big gray. He set himself up for the fences, jumping
with excellent scope and beautiful form. This well rounded
ability along with his amazing character really had everyone
talking and preparing for the afternoon auction.
The bidding went very quickly from the start up to 600,000
Euro, and at that point it became a duel between a bidder
representing a buyer from Norway and the manager
of Blue Hors and Stutteri Ask of Denmark, Esben Moller.
The bidding between the two of them quickly went up to
800,000, the previous record set by a German Breeding
Verband, but then it slowed as the bidder from Norway
took more time.
The auctioneer, Uwe Heckmann, waited and said in a deep
voice, “a new record stands before the door”, and with
that Norway raised the bid to 850,000 Euro which put it
back into Blue Hors court. With a phone call they then
raised it up to 900,000 Euro.
At this point the crowd was in disbelief, but everyone was
on edge as the game was still very much on. The bidder
from Norway went up to 950,000, and then Blue Hors
raised it to 975,000. Of course now everyone realized the
bidding was standing at the edge of the one million Euro
mark. Uwe came down from his podium and over to the
stands in front of where the Norwegian bidder was sitting.
He quietly had the handler bring the stallion over to
them as the bidder was on the phone to his client, and
then slowly started making the count, “Going once, going
twice, and...”
As the Norwegian bidder raised his hand high in the air the
crowd went nuts and Uwe yelled out, “One Million Euro!!”
The music started to play, but before the trumpets could
get very far Uwe had gone over to Esben who almost immediately
raised the bid to 1.1 million Euro! Uwe then
walked back over to the Norwegian bidder and tried his
best to see if he would keep going, but it was clear it
was over. He thanked the bidder and then walked back to
where Esben and his partners were sitting. He knocked the
The Oldenburg Horse
hammer down on the arena wall and shook Esben’s hand
shaking his own head in disbelief and amazement. They
hugged, and then Esben stood up to shake hands with
the Norwegian bidder who came over to congratulate him.
With that Esben then hopped over the kickwall and took
the stallion on a victory lap to Handels’ Hallelujah chorus.
Everyone was on their feet and going crazy. They continued
to cheer as the stallion was then taken on two more
laps by his own handler, and then at the end his breeder
now turned millionaire, Reinhard Mahnel came out to the
middle of the arena and held his hands in the air in victory.
This amazing stallion, Le Champ Ask, is sired by the
Holsteiner stallion, Last Man Standing (Lovari x Alandia
(Landgraf I)). Le Champ Ask’s dam is Modela, a mare
who is line bred twice to Cor de la Bryere and also shows
Ramiro and Ladykiller xx in her mare line.
For the OS this was certainly a landmark day. Paul Schockemoehle
who is one of the licensing committee members
and founders of the OS was bursting with pride over how
wonderful this stallion was. As he entered the press conference
he just kept saying, “He’s an all around horse, he
can do it all”.
The rest of the auction also went very well, and the evening
parade of older stallions was also fantastic. Unfortunately,
many stallions could not make it due to the snow,
but everyone was treated to spectacular performances
from Blue Hors Romanov, Royal Doruto, and many others.
Quando Quando was ridden beautifully by Karen Rehbein,
and there was a very nice tribute to the breeders
of Royal Diamond. For video highlights please visit www.
Weser-Ems Champion Cyrill Receives a Standing Ovation
There was an exceptional level of quality in the line up of
young stallions presented last weekend at the Annual Main
Stallion Licensing for the Weser-Ems Pony Stallions. Out
of the 52 stallions presented, 35 of them were licensed for
breeding in the various categories of pony breeding that
are overseen by the Weser-Ems Verband.
In the small Shetland Pony division which must be under
87 centimeters, the stallion Amadeus E (Aber Hallo E) bred
by Kurt Ebke and owned by Frank Kuenneke was named
the Champion. In the Original Shetland Pony division the
Champion was Weshorns Havel (Harvey) bred and owned
by Hennig Mueller of Westerstederfeld, Germany.
The Champion of the Welsh-A Ponies was a super type.
Spring Flower Chaos (Shamrock Chelsea Fun) bred and
owned by Zuchtgemeinschaft Siemers took the title. With
spectacular movement the Cedrik son, Calido-G trotted
right into the hearts of the huge crowd, and was named
champion of the Welsh B Ponies. He was bred by Alexandra
Garme and is owned by August Ellers.
In the largest division, the German Riding Ponies, there
were 15 stallions licensed for breeding. The top fi ve Premium
stallions were lead by the champion Cyrill (FS Champion
de Luxe). The palomino stallion cast a spell on everyone
with his beautiful type and his huge movement bringing the
audience to a standing ovation!! He was bred by Anja van
Hoorn and is owned by Dr. Katja Bodenkamp.
Cyrill’s sire, FS Champion de Luxe was the Champion German
Riding Pony Stallion in both 2001 and 2002 at the
German Bundeschampionate. He also won his stallion performance
test in Neustadt-Dosse with four perfect scores
of 10. Cyrill’s damline is also interesting going back to the
well-known Welsh line of Downland Folklore. For more on
the results please visit www.oldenburghorse.com.
not even they could really imagine what the horse would
be capable of in only the next 10 months.
Nadine and Simon are certainly no strangers to world class
talent. They owned and trained FBW Dejavu who under
Nadine won the 2004 Bundeschampionate for the 4 year
old mares and geldings and the bronze medal at the 2005
World Championships for the 5 year old dressage horses.
They made the tough decision to sell Dejavu, and then set
out to fi nd another top prospect for Nadine.
Once the bid for Desperado was won, Nadine took him
home and the two began to get to know each other better.
Over the spring and into early summer it was becoming
obvious that this team was going to be tough to beat. In
June the German selection committee of Holger Schmezer
and Heinz Lemmermann announced that they would be
headed to the World Championships. Once in Verden they
won the qualifi er out of 42 competitors with an outstanding
overall score of 8.76. They earned an 8.8 for the trot,
The Oldenburg Horse
20
8.6 for walk, 8.8 for canter, 8.6 for submission and a 9.0
for the general impression score.
They had just edged out one of the favorites who had
already racked up two German national titles in the past
two years, Silberaster OLD. Silberaster (Sandro Hit x Sonnenlicht
(Canaster I)) is owned by Ludger Buhrmann and
was ridden by Helen Langehanenberg. She did exceptionally
well scoring an 8.52 overall in the qualifi er receiving
a 9.0 for the walk.
Also doing very well in the qualifying phase was Diamantenbörse
OLD who won the qualifi ers for the 6 year old
dressage horses. Diamantenbörse (Diamond Hit x Glanzstern
(Rubinstein I)) was purchased by the Lüttgen family
who owns the training stable, Gut Mödrath, at the 2005
Oldenburg Elite Fall Auction. She was ridden by Jessica
Süss who was thrilled with the mare. In the qualifi er they
scored an 8.50 overall receiving a 7.8 for the trot, 9.0 for
the walk, 8.5 for the canter, 8.5 for submissiveness and
8.7 for the general impression. The 9.0 she received for
the walk was the only 9.0 given out that day.
On the day of the fi nals for the 5 year old dressage horses
Nadine rode Desperado extremely well. It was a very cor-

rect and harmonious test. The judges commented that
he truly demonstrated the “happy athlete”, and said his
“gaits are of the best quality”. They also took note of how
nicely he maintained a consistent and light contact with
the rider’s hands. With that the judging panel of Vincenzo
Truppa (ITA), Elisabeth Max-Theurer (AUT), Isabelle Judet
(FRA) and Dietrich Plewa (GER) gave them an 8.9 for the
trot and walk, 8.6 for the canter, 8.8 for submissiveness
and a 9.0 for the general impression. This gave them a
total of 8.84 and the Championship title!
Silberaster was also very impressive with most believing
she had the best natural gaits of all of the competitors.
Unfortunately, she was a little distracted by passing stallions,
and Helen had to do her best to keep the mare attentive
and in front of her leg. However, even with that
being the case they received an 8.5 for the trot, 9.0 for
the walk, 8.4 for the canter, 8.3 for submissiveness, and
an 8.5 for the general impression scores. This gave them
an exceptional 8.54 earning them the bronze medal.
The following day Diamantenbörse OLD also did very well.
Jessica rode her exceptionally well presenting the mare
consistently and correctly throughout the test. Her walk is
what had everyone talking. The judges commented it was,
“the best we have seen today”. They were given a 9.2 for
that walk, an 8.0 for the trot, 8.4 for the canter, 8.5 for
submissiveness, and 8.5 for the general impression. This
gave them a total of 8.52 earning them the bronze medal.
Both Desperado and Silberaster went on in September to
compete in the German National Championships for young
horses known as the Bundeschampionate. Unfortunately,
they both had spooky fi rst days. They did come back with
a vengeance in the small fi nals showing their true talents.
Silberaster won the small fi nal earning 9’s and even a perfect
10 for her walk. Desperado was right behind her so
both were allowed to go on to the fi nals the next day.
It turned out to be quite a roller coaster for these two exceptional
champions. In the fi nals Silberaster spooked in
the warm up and Helen became concerned that she was
not sound. It turned out that she was ok, but just to be on
the safe side she pulled the mare from the competition.
Desperado did well, but wasn’t quite himself looking a bit
tired after the three days of competition.
It is certain we will see far more from Nadine and Desperado.
This will defi nitely be a team to beat in the future.
As for Silberaster, Helen decided it was time for her trainer
and long time friend, Ingrid Klimke to take the reins.
The Oldenburg Verband is obviously very proud of the
accomplishments of these horses and many others like
them. Everyone looks forward to more from them all.
Oldenburg
Horses and Weser-Ems Ponies at the Top of the Year End Awards!!
It is that time of year, and many Oldenburg breeders,
owners, and riders are celebrating over the success of
their wonderful horses and how well they did over the
course of 2008!
Both the USDF and the USEF have held their 2008 award
ceremonies. The USDF presented awards for the open
Dressage and Dressage Breed divisions, and they of
course give the breed specifi c “All-Breeds Awards” where
they team up with breeding societies such as the Oldenburg
Horse Breeders’ Society to present the best of the
breed with the honors they deserve.
THE ADEQUAN USDF/OHBS ALL BREEDS AWARDS
From Don Devaki to Sir Sylvester, Fuerstin Tina, Rosall,
Sandro Class, Steinway, Sandomere, Davidoff Hit, Ringo
Starr, Don Angelo, and Rafalca there were many divisions
where these top Oldenburg horses really stood out. Please
see page ? for the listing of the full USDF/OHBS results.
Marne Martin-Tucker very generously organizes the awards
for the OHBS and she sent out 37 Ecogold Coolers over
the Thanksgiving Holidays to the winners, and held on to
the one Shari Glickman is holding in the picture above at
the awards ceremony itself.
Pictured to the left of Shari is Arielle Perry who contributes
wonderful photos to this magazine and is known well on
the East Coast for her photographic talent. She is also a
breeder and is holding the award for top weanling earned
by her gelding, Don Devaki (Donatelli II x Reba’s Song
(Rotspon)).
On the right of Sheri is Barbara Ebner who placed second
in the 2008 Adaquen USDF/OHBS All Breeds Vintage
Cup for First Level. She rode Royal Pearl (Royal Diamond
x Fenja (Absinth)) who she bought from Heather Mason
of Flying Change Farm who had imported him from Germany.
Barbara had decided she needed a lighter type of
warmblood, and she was impressed with Royal Pearl’s
very good gaits and character.
Barbara is a very accomplished equestrian who has earned
the USDF Bronze and Silver Medals, the USCTA Gold Medal,
and is an “S” Level Dressage Judge who actively judges
throughout the United States. Therefore, even at the
young age of 60 it was no surprise that she and her new 4
year old gelding did very well in 2006 winning the Vintage
Cup for Training Level.
and Royal Pearl went back into the show ring in 2008 at
First Level at just a few shows, but they did well enough
to secure the 2nd place position for the Vintage Cup. She
is extremely happy with Pearl who she says learns very
quickly and just loves people. She said, “He has been
known to spot me down the road from his paddock while I
bike, and whinnies to me! How could you not love it?!”
Also loving it was the winner of the Adequan USDF/OHBS
All Breeds Grand Prix Award, Jan Ebeling aboard the Oldenburg
mare Rafalca (Argentinus x Ratine (Rubinstein I)).
Jan’s business partner, Christian Heinrich, discovered the
12 year old mare for Jan, and facilitated the sale to Rob-
Rom Enterprises LLC whose members are Ann Romney,
Beth Meyer, Pat Crow and Amy Ebeling. Rafalca had been
ridden in Germany by Melanie Sandig who trained with
Wolfram Wittig who Jan has continued to work with.
Since her 2006 debut in the United States, Rafalca has really
turned heads and impressed the judges. Jan rode her
in her fi rst Intermediare II classes at the 2007 National
Championships at Gladstone, and won all of them.
Their debut at Grand Prix was a demonstration freestyle
at the World Cup in Las Vegas where they earned a standing
ovation. They went from there to win the 2007 Pebble
Beach CDI-W Grand Prix and Grand Prix Freestyle which
lead to a USEF training grant to train with Klaus Balkenhol
in Germany. In July of 2008 they repeated their win of the
Pebble Beach CDI-W Grand Prix and Grand Prix Freestyle.
An Equine Fairy Tale
The following was submitted by an Oldenburg Horse
Breeders’ Society member, Meredith McGrath, telling us
a wonderful story about her fantastic colt, Song Hit for
Me or “Sam”. Sam not only was the top colt at the fi rst
ever Mare Performance Test and Oldenburg Horse Show
at High Point Hanoverians in Maryland, he then went on to
do extremely well at Devon.
We invite all current members to submit their stories such
as this for publication in this magazine. Please make sure
the article is approximately 1200 words and that it is accompanied
by professional quality pictures that are at
least 300 dpi and 8” wide.
We look forward to hearing more fun stories of show success
and personal triumphs from you and your Oldenburg
horses and/or Weser-Ems ponies. Submissions should be
sent via e-mail to Stephanie Law at: oldenburghorseweb@
hotmail.com.
Sometimes, it’s the dream you don’t have that
comes true!
I own a good Oldenburg mare, Wait For Me, “Mia”, by
Weltstern (Welt As), who I compete in dressage at 3rd
Level. When Mia was sixteen years old, she was bred to
Sinatra Song (Sandro Hit), in hopes of producing a future
The Oldenburg Horse
30
competition horse. Mia gave birth to a handsome, dark
bay colt, Song Hit For Me, “Sam”.
I had never handled a horse in a breed class, but I thought
it would be a good experience for Sam to show in the 2008
Colt Class at Dressage at Lexington, in Virginia. He would
have to learn to stand, lead, trot in hand, trailer, stay in
a strange barn and be around strange horses. My teenage
daughter handled the mare, I handled Sam and we
practiced diligently. Sam was easy to train and very well
behaved. It was obvious early on that Sam didn’t need
to be chased around the ring by a “whip handler”. When
I said “trot”, Sam was all forward.
We arrived at Lexington, and all that changed. I had one
very excited, three and a half month old, stud colt on my
hands. In spite of that, Sam held it together, showed
a tense walk, but a very good trot for the judge. I was
thrilled when Sam got second place and was told that his
score of 83.5 was considered very good. So, I was ready
to take my red ribbon and head home when the ring steward
informed me that Sam qualifi ed to show in the Great
American/USDF Breeders Colt championship that day.
As that class proceeded, it was obvious Sam had had
enough. This time he showed a very good, forward walk,
but when it came time to trot, Sam did everything but.
My usually well trained, well behaved youngster was rearing,
striking and very obstreperous. So, I was shocked
when Sam won the class. I was really ready to head home
now, but the ring steward said Sam had qualifi ed for another
class. And so went the day. Sam became more of
a handful with each class he won.
At one point, we were taking our place in line with the other
entries and Sam was performing his “power passage”
in hand. I said fi rmly “Sam, walk” to which he obediently
responded. This produced a snort of laughter from Judge
Lilo Fore who had been watching his antics for some time.
My daughter and Sam’s dam, were both saints through
out the long, hot day. The truth is, I was so busy with
Sam, I didn’t even know what classes he had won.
In the end, we were awarded a fancy ribbon neck sash
and a beautiful silver picture frame, which was engraved
“Grand Champion Dressage at Lexington”. That’s when I
realized, my three and a half month old colt had just beat
all breeds, ages and sexes to win this title. That is one
dream I never had.
Sam was now qualifi ed to show in the colt championship
fi nals at Dressage At Devon. I always wanted to attend
Devon as a spectator and dreamed that, someday, I would
have a horse with enough talent to ride there. But never,
in my wildest dreams, did I think I would be showing a six
month old stud colt, in hand, in the breed classes. So, we
practiced. Sam got weaned and had to learn to be a big
boy, trailering to strange places without mom.
The Oldenburg Horse Breeders Society (the North American
division of the German Oldenburg Verband) was having
their fi rst horse show and mare performance test in the
USA. It was held in Chestertown, Maryland, the weekend
before Devon. Hosted by High Point Hanoverians, this is
the farm where Sam’s sire, Sinatra Song, stands. I felt it
would be an historic occasion and an honor to show Sam
there. My goal was to have much better behaved colt and
to show him well. Sam complied and won the colt class
with comments from the German judge about his “really
good swinging trot, always up hill and his excellent walk”.
Then, off to Devon.
Nothing could have prepared Sam or me for Devon; such
excitement, chaos, tight quarters and lots of horses.
Through it all, Sam was a trooper. Strangers commented
on what a well behaved young man he was especially
without his mom. When it was our turn to enter the ring
for the colt championship, the ring steward said to me a
bit incredulously, “Are you the handler?” There was no
mare, no “whip person”, no “team of professional han-
The Oldenburg Horse
31
dlers” just Sam and me. “Yes” I answered confi dently
and we entered the ring. Sam showed beautifully and
placed third against the best colts and young stallions on
the East Coast.
At the award ceremony, Sam and I stood in the main Devon
arena, at night, under the lights; it was like a dream.
When we came forward to accept our ribbon, one of the
judges shouted “congratulations, good job”. I pinned
that yellow ribbon proudly on Sam’s halter and we demonstrated
his “big trot” amid loud applause as we exited
the ring. When I checked the scores later, I found that one
team of judges had scored Sam in fi rst place. What a wild
ride. What a fairy tale! - Meridith McGrath
Song Hit for Me’s sire, Sinatra Song, was imported by Angela
Barilar of High Point Hanoverians. He is a 6 year old
Premium Hanoverian stallion who has been licensed and
approved by the Oldenburg Horse Breeders’ Society. He is
by the legendary Oldenburg stallion, Sandro Hit, who has
sired many young horse champions at the world and national
levels, and are now winning internationally at Grand
Prix. Sinatra Song himself just recently won the Stallions
Under Saddle Class at Devon.
We wish Meredith, Sam, and Sinatra Song continued success
in their respective careers!

The Oldenburg Horse
Coming from an interesting background in breeding research
and development, Dr. Roland Wörner made his debut
as the Business Director of all 4 of the Oldenburg organizations
at the Stallion Licensing in November of 2004.
After earning his Doctorate degree in Agricultural studies
he became the Business Director of the BHZP that oversaw
a large livestock hybridization breeding program. He
then worked as a scientifi c advisor on projects for the German
National Ministry of Education and Research such as
the study known as “FUGATO” that researched the functionality
of genomes in animal organisms.
Of course he also has a background in sport horses and
riding. He began riding at as a teenager in his hometown
of Giesen in the Hessen region. He enjoyed hunting, and
got into competitive eventing. He and his wife now live in
Lünebürg where they still ride for leisure, and have started
breeding. They bred a beautiful fi lly this past year by
Daddy Cool who he feels will have a lot of potential.
His position is certainly a complex one. The organizations
that he manages under the guidance of the Board
of Directors include the two non-profi t breeding organizations:
the Verband der Züchter des Oldenburger Pferdes
e.V. (OLD) and the Springpferdezuchtverband Oldenburg-
International e.V. (OS) whose directives are to oversee
the development of the Oldenburg horse as a top sport
horse breed. These two breeding organizations are then
promoted and marketed by the for-profi t Verein zur Absatzförderung
des Oldenburger Pferdes which is respon-
sible for the auctions and sales of Oldenburg breeders’
horses. From handling insurance to collecting payments
across differing international laws, there can be a tremendous
amount of work once the bidding is concluded.
The fourth organization that Dr. Wörner oversees is
the non-profi t Verein zur Förderung des Oldenburger
Pferdesports e.V. that gives grants to horse owners and
trainers who have Oldenburg horses who have been successful
in sport. These Oldenburg horses who have met
certain criteria are offi cially given the abbreviations, “OLD”
behind their names by the Verein zur Förderung as an indication
of their accomplishments and potential.
Of course the breeding of Oldenburg horses goes beyond
the borders of Germany. There are international divisions
and/or agents of the Verband der Züchter des Oldenburger
Pferdes e.V. in Great Britain, France, Belgium, Spain,
Russia, Poland, India, and North America. He feels that
the Oldenburg Horse Breeders’ Society in North America
is a very important partner for the development of the
Oldenburg breeding program, and supporting its breeders
is a priority.
With concern to the current fi nancial crisis he does expect
that it will have at least a moderate affect on horse sales
over the next year, but in general he remains confi dent
about the future. Even in these uncertain times, he feels
there are creative ways to help the OHBS to grow, and
become a dominant force in sport horse breeding.

The Oldenburg Horse Breeders’ Society is the offi cial North American division of the Verband der Züchter des Oldenburger
Pferdes (also known as the German Oldenburg Verband). The Society is the Verband’s only authorized representative
in North America – no other organization or individual is authorized to act or speak on behalf of the Verband, and only
the Oldenburg Horse Breeders’ Society can issue offi cial Oldenburg papers to horses bred in North America. The Society
maintains permanent offi ces in West Palm Beach, Florida, and in Vechta, Germany. The Florida offi ce is managed by
Holly Simensen, a long-time sport horse enthusiast and breeder who has been associated with the Oldenburg Verband
for over 20 years.
Announcements
Welcome Back to Dr. Evelin Schlotmann!
An Oldenburg State appointed Licensing committee was fi rst conceived of in 1820. This committee would decide whether
or not the stallions presented each year would be allowed to breed for the new society or not. In the almost 190 year
history of this committee there has never been a woman serving on it...until now. Dr. Evelin Schlotmann will join the fi ve
breeding judge board consisting of Dr. Schulze Schleppinghof, Ulrich Henschke, Sören Pedersen, and Wolfram Wittig.
Dr. Schlotmann was born in the German region of Schleswig-Holstein and graduated from the University of Kiel in agriculture.
She is certainly not unknown to the German breeding world or to Oldenburg. She worked for years as the
gestuet assistant for the Niedersachsen Landgestuet Celle, and was the representative for the gestuet’s director, Dr.
Burchard Bade. In 1997 she came to work for the Oldenburg Verband where she was not only responsible for the registration
and inspection process for the foals, mares, and stallions in Germany, she also was the Breeding Director for the
foreign breeding programs such as the Oldenburg Horse Breeders’ Society in North America.
At the end of 2005 she left the Oldenburg Verband to pursue a career as a partner with her husband, Günter Schlotmann,
in their own fi rm which supported the research of renewable energy. She has always maintained her contact with
the Verband since, and could almost always be found at all of the major breeding and sporting events. She stated, “Being
at the heart of the breeding work is an important and worthwhile role that has always been very fun for me.” She
continued, “It is important that the breeders and presenters comprehend the judgment, and that the critique is always
understood in a positive and motivating way.” - Dr. Tanja Becker
