Against the backdrop of the Christmas season, we decided to launch our first supplement dedicated to the ever growing retail market, as 

well as the hospitality and F&B sectors. Those who have lived in Macau for many years know how these areas have changed. Not only 

in terms of choice but also with regard to design, international brand availability and places where products are showcased and sold. 

Promotional budgets, often non-existent in the past, are now being planned months in advance. Many in Macau would rather have 

decisions being made locally instead of in Hong Kong, where the decision makers still choose in the dark since they lack knowledge of 

Macau’s realities. Still, things are changing for the better; Macau has never changed so fast! 

And one day – hopefully soon – Macau might be able to decide autonomously from Hong Kong what its consumers want and need. 

This Christmas special – to which our small team dedicated their heart and soul – is the first of many more to come! We feel the guide

It’s time to profit!

n a manner of speaking, the Swatch Group made history on 1 

November 2007: It unveiled seven flagship stores – each carrying 

one of the company’s brands – simultaneously at the Venetian 

Macao in Cotai. The event was marked with ample fanfare: A 

lion dance and eye dotting ceremony, speeches and an “exclusive” 

banquet for 200 guests in the ballroom, complete with a fashion 

show featuring models displaying the company’s products sashaying 

down a catwalk. The grand finale of the evening did not disappoint: 

A live operatic performance. 

This was hardly overkill, considering the Swiss-based company 

bills itself as the world’s number one maker of finished watches 

with eighteen different brands representing all segments of the retail 

watch market. Besides producing trendy, colorful fashion accessories 

that also tell time, Swatch also manufactures high-end 

timepieces and does some serious business supplying components 

for watches to third-party watchmakers globally and is an important 

player in advanced nanomechanical and nanoelectronic technologies 

for watch making and other industries. With more than 20,000 

employees in some 50 countries working for Swatch, the company 

managed to increase gross sales in 2006 by 12.3 percent over 2005 

to US$ 4.5 billion (MOP 36 billion) and increasED its net profits by 

33.7 percent to US$ 740 million: Reason enough to celebrate. 

The Swatch Group Ltd. is the biggest watch manufacturer in the 

world (about 25 percent of all sales). It was formed in 1983 through 

the merging of the two Swiss watch manufacturers – ASUAG and 

SSIH – and took its present name in 1998 (formerly SMH Swiss 

Corporation for Microelectronics and Watchmaking Industries 

Ltd). Swatch Group brands include: Swatch, Omega, Blancpain, 

Glashutte Original, Jaquet Droz, Rado, Tissot, Union Glashütte, 

Léon Hatot, Longines, Calvin Klein, Certina, Mido, Pierre Balmain, 

Hamilton, Flik Flak and Endura. 

Macau’s time has come 

Kevin Rollenhagen, member of the Swatch Group’s extended 

management committee responsible for Greater China, was offici- 

ating at the opening ceremonies. He has been in Hong Kong for 18 

years and says he had no idea he would see the kind of growth the 

company, and the region, have experienced in recent years. Until 

now, he says, the “type of environment where Swatch is normally 

presented has not existed in Macau”. The company previously 

opened a retail outlet in Fisherman’s Wharf, but there, he says, 

“the tourist mix did not turn out to be what we expected”. Although 

the Venetian Macao’s Grand Canal Shoppes are likely to be a much 

more favourable location for retail, Rollenhagen acknowledges: 

“Macau is still an underdeveloped market for Swatch”. Nevertheless, 

he says the company is looking to expand its presence within 

the city. 

Having created a local subsidiary this past January, Swatch established 

seven outlets with different brands as a foundation for 

future retail expansion in the city. “We now have the structure necessary 

to do that and we are in discussions with developers and we 

will be opening more shops”, said Rollenhagen, which, like their 

Venetian shops, will each handle one of the group’s brands and be 

fully owned subsidiaries. 

“The Greater China market is one of the leading markets in the 

world for the Swatch brand and it is the fastest growing market in 

the world” he notes. Rollenhagen expects about 80 percent of customers 

in the group’s Macau shops will be tourists from the mainland, 

but in the future, he is setting his sights on the Vietnamese 

and Indonesian markets which he says are as yet unexplored. 

The Swatch brand, as compared to the more traditional of the 

Swatch Group’s brands is more popular with younger consumers, 

he explains, adding: “At a deeper level, Swatch is very much involved 

in the world of art and design; people wear them as their 

mood determines”. The brand is marketed to the “young at heart in 

Asia”, where its prestige is a primary motivator for purchase. 

Swatch does not compete with any of our other brands, Rollenhagen 

insists: “You could argue that it competes with every brand 

in the world”. In earlier times, everybody had one good watch, 

but now a watch is a fashion accessory and people have several, 

changing them to suit the occasion or their style. “This”, says Rol- 

lenhagen, “has changed the whole watch industry”. 

“Swatch changed the whole concept that also comprises computers 

and mobile phones”, he believes. People don’t need these 

things, he says, “but they think they will bring happiness”. 

Revolution in watchmaking 

Today’s trends point to mechanical watches in larger sizes and 

new materials, with “innovation [being] the name of the game”, 

he believes. But in developing markets, “people still want a ‘lifetime 

watch’”. Markets in developing countries, he maintains, are 

becoming more like their established counterparts in that they are 

representing more and more of the overall worldwide market. With 

demand exceeding supply in both developing and established markets, 

Swatch Group is “not going to have too many problems [finding 

a market]”. 

That is not to say everything is perfect in the world of watch 

manufacturing: Like Macau, Rollenhagen says, the company’s home 

country of Switzerland suffers from a shortage of skilled labour: “So 

much is handmade that there is a limit to how much you can produce”, 

he says – thus explaining why demand exceeds supply. 

Staffing the new Macau shops was, he recalls, “a real scramble”. 

He and his managers participated in employment fairs, and 

also transferred some staff from Hong Kong although, Rollenhagen 

says he would rather hire and train local staff, and promote from 

within for supervisory and managerial positions. Yet, he predicts, 

“The challenge will continue”. 

Adding to the problem is the fact that since Swatch product 

styles change every six months, the company suffers supply bottlenecks 

and is regularly running out of stock. 

Despite all that, the outlook is rosy: “I personally believe Macau 

will be one of the fastest growing [Asian] markets and it will be 

bigger than many European countries”, says Rollenhagen. “People 

come here and they want to spend money. There is no place in the 

world like Macau today. It is a cross between Monte Carlo and Las 

Vegas with lion dances and egg tarts mixed in!”

mouth-watering three course Christmas set lunch offers 

something to please everyone. Available between 12nn 

and 3pm from 23rd December until 26th December 

for just $298, this extra special festive menu offers a 

fantastic choice of four starters, four main dishes and 

is rounded off with a tempting selection of desserts. 

Choose the traditional smoked Scottish salmon 

followed by turkey or honey glazed ham, go classic with 

Alaskan crab and charcoal grilled beef fillet, or opt for 

contemporary with fresh sushi and tandoori Chilean sea 

bass; whatever the combination, be sure to leave enough 

room to enjoy either the Christmas pudding or white 

chocolate and cinnamon panna cotta offered for dessert. 

A CHAMPAGNE CELEBRATION 

Putting the sparkle in Christmas celebrations, Cafe 

Deco Macao will spotlight Champagne throughout 

December. In addition to a Champagne and oyster 

promotion at just $130 for a glass of bubbly plus three 

freshly shucked oysters and special prices on Moet & 

Chandon Grand Vintage 2000 by the glass at $120 and 

by the bottle at $690, festive ‘Poinsettia’ Champagne 

cocktails will also be available every day throughout 

December for just $98. For even more bubbly fun, Mini 

Moet will be available for $150 per bottle all day on 

December 24th, 25th and 26th. 

For a more traditional taste of the festive season, 

glasses of warming Gluhwein (mulled wine) will also be 

served throughout December at just $55 per glass.

fillet with a Merlot reduction and truffle mashed potato or roast 

spotted garoupa fillet and Alaskan crabmeat with baby vegetables,
