“HO N O R I N G T H E T R A D I T I O N OF T H E H I S T O R I C P U R G O L D E R P R E S S ”
On December 5th, 2012, I attended
the WIAA Sportsmanship Summit
at the Holiday Inn & Convention
Center in Stevens Point, WI. The
summit taught me some things I
didn’t know about sportsmanship
and taught me more about things I
already felt I knew. For example,
there is a connection between
sportsmanship and leadership. At
the summit, coaches, players, and
officials all had a say on their reaction
to sportsmanship, which taught
me a lot about officials and parents
as a player on a sports team.
Just as a player is passionate about
playing the game, an official takes
reffing very seriously. Basketball
requires two officials watching five
players and football requires five
officials viewing eleven players on
two teams on the field all at once.
This looks much easier from the
bleachers than fans and parents
may think it is.
Parents, we appreciate your support
at both home and away games. In
each and every sporting event,
parents, fans, coaches, officials,
and players have to practice sportsmanship
because being a positive
person is important. “If you fall for
everything, you’ll stand for nothing.”
Work on being positive players,
teammates, fans, coaches, officials,
students, and parents.
-LaMaris Marrero, Student &
Purgolder Basketball Player
The WIAA conference gave me a
new view and good outlook on
Purgolder sportsmanship. Although
cheerleading is a different
kind of competition than basketball,
cheerleaders also participated
in the WIAA Sportsmanship Summit.
They said that when someone
falls on the other team, it’s always
important to help them up. Showing
sportsmanship shows what type
of leader you are. Even a simple
“Thank You” to the reffs shows
them that we all depend on eachother
for the games to take place.
When the final score is posted, it’s
a sign of respect for each other and
the game to shake hands with the
opposing team. Showing sportsmanship
is much more than being a
leader or helping someone. Good
sportsmanship is a sign of respect
for all participants, family, and
fans.
“...fulfill your
dreams and
live up to your
greatest
potential.”
Literacy & Math Monthly
A Message to Students from the
Literacy and Math Corner…
Now that Semester I has come to
a close, it is a good time to reflect
on the progress you’ve
made thus far. Think about what
you’ve accomplished as a student.
Think about what you’ve
accomplished outside of school.
It is always good to celebrate
your successes in life and to
work on areas that may need
improvement. By doing so, this
is a way to fulfill your dreams
and live up to your greatest potential.
As a way to get you
prepared and focused for Semester
II, use the following questions
for reflection and goalsetting:
1. What am I most proud of this
school year so far? Why?
2. Did I give 100% of myself
everyday in my classes? If so,
why? If not, why not?
3. Is there one way I can improve
myself as a student? What
is it and why is it important?
4. What is at least one goal I
have for myself for Semester II?
Why is this important to me?
A Message to Parents from the
Literacy and Math Corner…
Take some time before the end
of January to have a conversation
with your son or daughter
about the reflection questions
above. Spend quality time really
