Wright Wride 2010 attracts 

249 cyclists to Greene County

Good weather once again smiled on the Dayton Cycling Club’s 

annual Wright Wride on Aug. 29, and about 183 people showed 

up to register on the day of the ride. This brought the number of 

participants to 249. 

As usual, though, Wride Director Dwaine Wheeler had purchased 

more than enough food and drink, and nobody went hungry or thirsty as 

the temperature rose into the high 80s. Wheeler — and a number of 

riders — were upset that Greene County chose to tar and chip a number 

of the roads on the route within a week of the bike tour. Wheeler had to 

dash out and repaint arrows on the affected roads, and riders had to en-

Dayton Cycling Club, a not-for-profit educational and recreational 

organization for bicyclists in the Miami Valley. The opinions 

expressed herein are those of the authors and do not

Submissions must be legible. This newsletter is produced on 

an iMac. E-mail submissions are appreciated. Please save 

text in Microsoft Word format. Contributors who would like their 

disks and manuscripts returned should enclose a stamped, 

self-addressed envelope. All editorial material for the S’n’L 

must be received no later than the 10th of the month, unless 

otherwise stated. 

Advertisements 

Paid advertisements and inserts must be submitted camera-ready 

and must be prepaid and cleared with the editor by 

the 15th of the month preceding publication. 

Basic rates 

1/8 page (3.75" W x 2.5" H) $15 

1/4 page (3.75" W x 5" H) $30 

1/2 page (7.5" W x 5 “ H) $50 

1 page (7.5" W x 10" H) $85 

The standard size and weight for inserts is 8.5 x 11" on 

20-pound stock. The fee to place a single-sheet insert printed 

on standard paper and delivered unfolded is $110. The fee to 

place a double-sheet insert printed on 11 x 17" paper delivered 

folded in half is $130. All advertising material that is not 

standard size requires extra handling and will incur a fee of 

$.05 extra per piece. Inserts printed on paper heavier than 

20-pound stock will incur a fee of $.08 per standard single 

piece for extra postage. Call the membership director for current 

circulation. 

DCC members may place one free personal ad up to 1/8 

page per calendar year. Such ads must be submitted in writing 

by the fifth of the month preceding publication.

Adventures in XOBAland 

Columbus Outdoor Pursuits delivered 

another great Across Ohio Bicycle 

Adventure (XOBA) this year. The ride 

began in East Liverpool and ended in 

Cincinnati. We experienced a break in 

this summer’s sweltering weather and 

on most days we were blessed with 

mixed clouds and lower temps and humidity. 

A new friend Don and I were apparently directionally 

impaired, as we added more than 30 miles to a 55-mile 

day despite the assistance of a GPS! 

Directions were not my only problem. I awakened 

in the dark one morning and put on my riding shorts. I 

could not understand the odd smiles I was receiving. It 

was only after the sun rose that I discovered my shorts 

were inside out! 

I was able to redeem myself by assisting Maury 

Wyckoff in the no-talent talent show. Fortunately, I had 

a non-speaking part and we came in second. I hope to 

see you next year as we cross Ohio to visit the hometowns 

of famous Ohioans.

dure about 3 miles of discomfort. 

As usual, the volunteers were outstanding. 

A special thank you to Dawn and Steve Buchwalder, 

former DCC members who started out by helping transport 

the many desserts to the Clifton lunch stop and 

wound up staying to help “man the fort.” Dawn was 

awesome at the grill, and Steve proved invaluable when 

a rider called to report a crash but was inaccurate about 

his location. Without Steve’s extensive knowledge of 

Greene County, first aid provider Kathi Rowell might 

still be looking for a scraped-up cyclist! 

Most feedback from the tour was positive, although 

there were some negatives. 

Forgetting to bring a tour roster was a definite problem 

that will be solved by putting a good supply of blank 

rosters in the box of supplies used by our registration 

team. The 25-mile route proved to be a little too hilly 

for some folks. One person suggested that a sign-in list 

be provided at the end of the ride, although it should be 

noted that we did have a volunteer drive the entire route 

at the end of the day to make sure no riders were still 

out. 

Although we know we can never please everyone, 

we do take all comments — good or bad — seriously. 

We appreciate our riders and want them to return next 

year for the 40th Wright Wride as well as for years to 

come.

Patty Barrett, Doreen Berkhimer, Mary Buchwalder, 

Paula Curtis, Dianna DeLong, Debbie LaVoie, Sally 

Pinnell, Roger Rizzardi and JoDee Russo baked more 

than enough goodies to satisfy even the hungriest bicyclist. 

And yes, the “I (heart) DCC” and “WW2010” cookies 

were home-baked — by relatively new club member 

Debbie LaVoie. 

The registration team consisted of Marilyn Corbin, 

Sally Pinnell, Joan Rudy, and Connie and Don Weber. 

Thanks to them for keeping cool amidst the deluge of 

day-of-ride registrants. 

Dawn and Steve Buchwalder, Carol Homan, Claire 

and Dan Lea, Kathi Rowell, JoDee Russo and Kay Wert 

Minardi manned the lunch stop in Clifton. 

Carey and Sean Dunn, Pat Hamilton and Cindy 

Himes manned Food Stop 1, at the National Afro American 

Museum & Cultural Center in Wilberforce. 

Fran and Rick Phillips, Cliff Elliott and Harv Kiesel 

worked at Food Stop 2, at Massie Creek Park in 

Cedarville. 

Kathi Rowell, Carolyn Winters and Ed Witte made 

up the sag crew. A Performance Bicycles mechanic took 

care of the few bike breakdowns that occurred. 

Dan Knapke helped transport food and equipment 

from place to place and helped set up as well. 

Director Dwaine Wheeler was in charge of overall 

planning, bought all the groceries and designed and 

painted the route.

at Greene Crossing Shopping Center, 4466 Indian 

Ripple Road, the Dayton City Paper and Therapy Cafe

Cultural Center, the village of Clifton and the Greene 

County Park District for allowing us to use their facilities. 

Dannon graciously donated Activia yogurt 

smoothies, Patty Borgman designed the artwork on the 

front of the commemorative Wright Wride T-shirts, and 

Clara Minardi helped clean all of the drink barrels after 

the event.

The Dayton Cycling Club Board of Directors met 

at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4, at the Vandalia Justice 

Center, 245 James Bohanan Drive. In attendance were 

Ed Witte, Brenda Taulbee, Chuck Smith, Michele 

Rizzardi, Harv Kiesel, Donna Williams-Powell, Beverly 

Owens, Marilynn Corbin, Rod Miller, Chris Brown, 

Dwaine Wheeler and guest Carly Powell. 

President Ed Witte called the meeting to order at 6:32 

p.m. Witte commented on this year’s Across Ohio Bicycle 

Adventure (XOBA). He said the ride was hilly and 

enjoyable, but the number of riders was down from previous 

years. Approximately 150 riders participated. Witte 

next presented a request for the DCC to participate in a 

health fair scheduled for Oct. 22, and Witte volunteered 

to represent the club at this event. 

Donna Williams-Powell, secretary, presented the 

minutes from the July meeting for review. Miller moved 

that the minutes be accepted as presented. Smith seconded 

this motion, and the minutes from the July meeting 

were unanimously accepted. 

Treasurer Michele Rizzardi distributed the financial 

report for July and reminded board members to use the 

club tax ID number when making purchases for the club 

since the DCC is a not-for-profit organization. Rizzardi 

reported that club taxes have been paid. Miller moved 

that the financial report for July be accepted. Kiesel seconded 

the motion, and the financial report for July was 

accepted without opposition. 

Brenda Taulbee, vice president, had nothing new to 

report. 

Advocacy Director Chuck Smith explained the Ohio 

Department of Transportation’s plan to install rumble 

stripes on 1,650 miles of state highways. These rumble 

stripes have the potential to create a safety risk for cyclists 

riding along these roads. Smith presented a letter 

addressed to ODOT Director Jolene M. Molitoris asking 

for the project to be postponed until the impact on

Minutes of the Aug. 4, 2010, Dayton Cycling Club business meeting 

Ohio cyclists can be studied. Kiesel moved that the board 

endorse and sign this letter, Powell seconded the motion 

and the motion was unanimously approved. 

Chris Brown, bikeways director, had nothing new to 

report. 

Wright Wride Director Dwaine Wheeler reported on 

the progress in planning for the Aug. 29 Wright Wride. 

Webmaster Harv Kiesel said there are now more than 

250 fans of the DCC’s Facebook page. He added that he 

sent a notice to fans inviting them to participate in the 

upcoming Wright Wride. 

Social director Rod Miller is working on setting up 

the annual DCC awards banquet for Saturday, Feb. 26, 

2011, with cocktails from 6 to 6:30 p.m. and dinner at 7. 

Marilyn Corbin, membership director, reported the 

membership numbers as of Aug. 3. Current membership 

includes 222 senior members, one junior member, 200 

senior family members and 34 junior family members 

in 101 families and five honorary members for a total 

membership of 465. 

Corbin also moved that the board create a new mileage 

category called personal miles. She volunteered to 

collect and report these miles. This new mileage category 

would include any miles ridden that do not qualify 

as touring, commuting or bikeway miles. There would 

be no awards given in this category, but the miles would 

be posted on the DCC website and in the Spoke ’N’ Link. 

Owens seconded the motion, and the motion was accepted 

without opposition. 

Newsletter Editor Kay Wert-Minardi was not present 

but submitted items by e-mail. She said deadlines for 

the September newsletter were Aug. 10 for editorial content 

and Aug. 15 for advertisements. She also reminded 

those interested in running for the 2011 DCC board that 

they must declare their intent to run by the Sept. 1 busi-

Remember to fill out and mail in the DCC ballot 

enclosed in this newsletter. 

Also, please e-mail or call me if you expect to receive 

a club plaque or a mileage bar but do not want it. 

These items are somewhat costly, so the club will be 

able to save money if you do not want the awards. 

Next year, you can begin to collect and report your 

“fun” mileage. Fun mileage is defined as those miles 

that are not commuter, touring or bikeway miles. Thus 

they include any personal recreational or training miles 

that cannot be reported under the other club categories. 

These miles should be reported to me by e-mail or 

telephone every two months, starting March 5. I will 

keep track of the miles and report them to the webmaster, 

who will post them on the DCC website. They also will 

be reported in the Spoke ’N’ Link. The first listing — of 

your January and February fun miles — will appear in 

the April newsletter and on the website at the end of 

March. 

These personal miles will not be used for club award 

purposes. However, by having them listed on the website 

and in the newsletter, you will be able to see a complete 

picture of your total yearly mileage.b

Alert bicyclist and DCC member Andy Auman called 

to say work seems to have started on the bikeway from 

Thomas B. Kyle Sr. Memorial Park in Tipp City down 

to Taylorsville MetroPark in Vandalia. Auman said dirt 

and trees have been cleared along the land that parallels 

Tipp-Canal/Old Canal Road. 

Auman also said he had ridden out to London on the 

Ohio to Erie Trail and met a resident of West Jefferson 

who told him a trail has begun to be cut from West

Join the Ohio Bicycle Federation at the Bicycle 

Museum of America in New Bremen on Saturday, Oct. 

2, for a day of fun and learning about bicycles. Since the 

Dayton Cycling Club is a member of the Ohio Bicycle 

Federation and the OBF is a member of the museum, all 

DCC members will be admitted free to the museum. 

The day begins at 9 a.m. with a guided historical 

bicycle tour starting at the museum and continuing to 

Minster (Oktoberfest) and Maria Stein. At noon the 

Wheelmen will give a demonstration, riding antique bicycles 

in a parking lot near the museum. At 1 p.m. participants 

are welcome to tour the museum. 

A meeting of the OBF will follow at 1:30 in the 

museum. 

The Bicycle Museum of America has the largest collection 

of historical bicycles in the world. It is located at 

7 W. Monroe St. (Ohio 274) in New Bremen, north of 

Dayton and west of Interstate 75.b

RiverScape bike hub offers conveniences commuters need 

The keys to bicycle commuting include a safe place 

to park your bike during the work or school day and a 

place to freshen up before starting work or school. 

Five Rivers MetroParks has added a new bike hub 

to its RiverScape MetroPark on the south bank of the 

Great Miami River in downtown Dayton (111 East 

Monument Ave.). The bike hub offers important amenities 

to bike commuters who work or attend school downtown. 

I recently toured the new bike hub. It is located in a 

block structure next to the large performance facility at 

RiverScape. When the door swung open, I noticed 40 

bicycle racks on the walls. Bike hub members may mount 

their bikes on these racks. Continuing into the building, 

I saw sinks, showers and lockers. The racks and lockers 

are not assigned to individuals, but can be used by any 

bike hub member while at work or school. This means 

commuters arriving early have the advantage in rack and 

locker selection. 

Five Rivers charges $40 per season to be a bike hub 

member. The bike hub seasons are March-May, June- 

August and September-February. Bike hub membership 

is limited to commuters working or attending school in 

downtown Dayton. If you qualify, go to http://

Recreational bicyclists may use a bike rack, pump, 

bathrooms, drinking fountain and coin-operated bicycle

of the speed riders will be expected to maintain during a ride. 

Ride leaders are responsible for providing maps and/or accompanying 

riders unfamiliar with the route.b

We’ve ‘bean’ riding 

On March 24, 2004, seven DCC member rode from Tipp 

City to Beavercreek for Sally Pinnell’s Bean Ride. After the 

ride and eating their fill of Sally’s beans and the other delicious 

food, (from left to right) Roger Rizzardi, Vince and Joan 

Caldwell, Joan Rudy, Anita Patten, George Stum and Walter 

Burton had a great ride back home.b 

Christmas Lights Ride 

When: 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11 

Rain date: 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 12 

Where: Marion’s Piazza, 711 Shroyer Road, 

Dayton (park/meet in the lot on the northwest 

corner of Patterson and Shroyer roads) 

Join us for a leisurely bike ride of 10 or so miles 

through Dayton, Kettering and Oakwood, viewing the 

holiday decorations. We’ll eat pizza at Marion’s after 

(pay your own way). Head- and taillights are required; 

Christmas lights and decorations are optional. Please 

call to confirm. We’ll ride only if the roads are dry and 

visibility is good.
