AMAÇ VE KAPSAM AIMS AND SCOPE<br />
Tüberküloz <strong>ve</strong> Toraks Dergisi, 1953 y›l›nda yay›n hayat›na bafllam›fl olup<br />
Türk Tüberküloz <strong>ve</strong> Toraks Derne¤i’nin süreli yay›n› olarak Mart, Haziran,<br />
Eylül <strong>ve</strong> Aral›k aylar›nda olmak üzere y›lda 4 say› yay›mlanmaktad›r. Tüberküloz<br />
<strong>ve</strong> Toraks Dergisi’nde yay›mlanacak yaz›lar›n seçiminde hakem de-<br />
¤erlendirme sistemi kullan›lmaktad›r. Derginin yay›n dili Türkçe <strong>ve</strong> ‹ngilizce’dir.<br />
Araflt›rma yaz›lar› özellikle desteklenmektedir.<br />
Derginin amac›; öncelikle toraks hastal›klar› konusunda yap›lan deneysel<br />
çal›flmalar, klinik çal›flmalar, derlemeler, olgu sunumlar›, k›sa rapor <strong>ve</strong> editöre<br />
mektup türünden yaz›lar ile okuyucular aras› bilgi al›fl<strong>ve</strong>riflini sa¤lamak<br />

Tuberculosis <strong>and</strong> Thorax is a periodical journal of Turkish Association of<br />
Tuberculosis <strong>and</strong> Thorax <strong>and</strong> has been published quarterly in March, June,<br />
September <strong>and</strong> December since 1953. A peer-reviewed system is used to<br />
select manuscripts. The languages of the journal are Turkish <strong>and</strong> English.<br />
Original research articles are particularly supported <strong>and</strong> encouraged.<br />
The goal of the Journal is to present collecti<strong>ve</strong> scientific knowledge <strong>and</strong><br />
the scientific background via experimental <strong>and</strong> clinical studies, reviews, case<br />
reports, short communications <strong>and</strong> letters to the editor. To undertake<br />
a no<strong>ve</strong>l effort in the international representation <strong>and</strong> attribution of published<br />
articles are the other aims of the journal.<br />
The target readers of the Tuberculosis <strong>and</strong> Thorax include chest diseases<br />
specialists <strong>and</strong> residents as well as all other physicians working in the field of<br />

terimlerin Latinceleri kullan›lmal›d›r. Gündelik t›p diline yerleflmifl terimler<br />
ise okunduklar› gibi Türkçe yaz›m kurallar›na uygun olarak yaz›lmal›d›r. ‹ngilizce<br />
<strong>ve</strong>ya baflka bir yabanc› dildeki flekli ile yaz›lan terimler t›rnak içinde belirtilmelidir.<br />
4. Yaz›da mikroorganizmalar›n latince isimleri ilk geçtikleri yerde tam <strong>ve</strong> aç›k olarak<br />
yaz›lmal›, daha sonraki kullan›mlarda cins isminin ilk harfi büyük harfle yaz›larak,<br />
nokta konulmal› <strong>ve</strong> tür ismi küçük harflerle yaz›larak k›salt›lm›fl olarak<br />
kullan›lmal›d›r. Örne¤in: Streptococcus pneumoniae ........... S. pneumoniae<br />
gibi. Mikroorganizmalar›n orijinal latince isimleri italik olarak yaz›lmal›d›r. Yaz›da<br />
mikroorganizmalar›n sadece cins ad› belirtiliyorsa Türkçe’ye kaz<strong>and</strong>›r›lm›fl<br />
flekli ile yaz›labilir. Örne¤in; stafilokok, streptokok gibi. Bu durumda italik yaz›l›ma<br />
gerek yoktur. Antibiyotik isimleri dil bütünlü¤ünü sa¤lamak aç›s›ndan<br />
okundu¤u gibi yaz›lmal› <strong>ve</strong> cümle bafl›nda de¤ilse ilk harfi küçük olmal›d›r. Örne¤in;<br />
sefotaksim, streptomisin, penisilin gibi.<br />

INSTRUCTIONS TO THE AUTHORS<br />
1. Tuberculosis <strong>and</strong> Thorax is the periodical journal of Turkish Association of Tuberculosis<br />
<strong>and</strong> Thorax <strong>and</strong> is published quarterly (March, June, September,<br />
<strong>and</strong> December).<br />
2. The goal of the Journal is to present collecti<strong>ve</strong> scientific knowledge via experimental<br />
<strong>and</strong> clinical studies, reviews, case reports, short communications <strong>and</strong><br />
letters to the editor to the readers to impro<strong>ve</strong> the scientific background.<br />
3. The publishing languages are Turkish <strong>and</strong> English. All manuscripts should<br />
comply with the Turkish Language Institution dictionary <strong>and</strong> the Turkish Language<br />
Writing Guide Book (http://tdk.org.tr). Anatomic terminology should<br />
be based on Latin nomenclature. Medical terms, in daily use, should be written<br />
according to Turkish spelling rules. The words required to be written in<br />
their original language by the author are written within quotation marks.<br />
4. When first mentioned in the text, microorganism names should be written<br />
with the full Latin names of the genus <strong>and</strong> the species. Both the genus <strong>and</strong><br />
species names should be italicized. Later, the first letter of the genus should<br />
be capitalized while the species name is in lower case letters if the context<br />
makes the meaning clear (e.g. Streptococccus pneumoniae……. S. pneumoniae).<br />
5. All manuscripts should comply with “Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts<br />
Submitted to Biomedical Journals” produced <strong>and</strong> updated by the International<br />
Committee of Medical Journals Editors (www.icmje.org).<br />
6. Tuberculosis <strong>and</strong> Thorax executes compliance with the Declaration of Helsinki<br />
Principles (http://www.wma.net/en/30publications/10policies/b3/index.<br />
html). All manuscripts concerning human subjects must contain a statement<br />
in the “Materials <strong>and</strong> Methods/Patients <strong>and</strong> Methods” section, indicating that<br />
the study was appro<strong>ve</strong>d by the Institutional Review Board. There should also<br />
be a statement of declaration about informed consent obtained from research<br />
subjects, <strong>and</strong> it should be placed in the “Materials <strong>and</strong> Methods/Patients<br />
<strong>and</strong> Methods” section. All manuscripts dealing with animal subjects must contain<br />
a statement indicating that the study was performed according to “The<br />
Guide for the Care <strong>and</strong> Use of Laboratory Animals” (www.nap.edu/catolog/<br />
5140.html) with the approval of the Institutional Review Board, in the “Materials<br />
<strong>and</strong> Methods” section. The Editor may ask for a copy of the approval document.<br />
7. The submitted manuscripts should conform exactly to the instructions in order<br />
to be reviewed promptly. The Editor <strong>and</strong> the Editorial Executi<strong>ve</strong> Board ha<strong>ve</strong><br />
the right to reject, to require additional revision or to revise the format of<br />
manuscripts which do not follow the rules.<br />
8. Initial evaluation of the submitted papers is performed by the Editor <strong>and</strong> the<br />
Editorial Executi<strong>ve</strong> Board. The papers appro<strong>ve</strong>d for reviewer evaluation are<br />
sent to three selected reviewers as blinded-manuscripts. The decision of acceptance<br />
of the manuscripts needs at least two reviewers’ affirmati<strong>ve</strong> opinions.<br />
The Editor is the complete authority regarding reviewer selection. The reviewers<br />
are mainly selected from National <strong>and</strong> International Advisory Board.<br />
The Editor may decide to send the manuscript to independent national or international<br />
reviewers according to the subject.<br />
9. The dates of submission <strong>and</strong> acceptation of the manuscript are stated in the<br />
end of the manuscript when published in the journal.<br />
10. The manuscripts should be submitted via online manuscript evaluation system<br />
(www.tuberktoraks.org).<br />
11. The manuscript text should be written in Verdana font, 10 point-type, double-spaced<br />
with 2 cm margins on the left <strong>and</strong> right sides. The article should be<br />
prepared in IBM compatible programs (Microsoft Windows, Word 98 at least).<br />
The pages should be arranged in numerical order beginning from the initial<br />
page, <strong>and</strong> the numbers should be at the bottom right corner of e<strong>ve</strong>ry page.<br />
The main text should not contain any information regarding author(s)’s<br />
name <strong>and</strong> affiliation.<br />
12. The author <strong>and</strong> the co-authors should sign a co<strong>ve</strong>r letter declaring acception<br />
of full responsibility for the accuracy of all contents in accordance with the order<br />
of authors. They should also declare that the manuscript is an original<br />
work that has not been previously published, <strong>and</strong> is not currently submitted<br />
<strong>TÜBERKÜLOZ</strong> <strong>ve</strong> <strong>TORAKS</strong><br />
<strong>TUBERCULOSIS</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>THORAX</strong><br />
to any other publication. The co<strong>ve</strong>r letter should include contributions <strong>and</strong><br />
responsibilities of each author, <strong>and</strong> whether there is a conflict of interest regarding<br />
manuscript. If there is no conflict of interest it should also be stated.<br />
In case of any financial contributions, the sponsors should also be denoted in<br />
the co<strong>ve</strong>r letter. The co<strong>ve</strong>r letter may be sent by fax to +90 312 319 00 46<br />
or its scanned copy may be sent by e-mail (kayaak@turk.net) or submitted<br />
concurrently with manuscript submission.<br />
13. All the entities that provide contribution to the technical content, data collection<br />
<strong>and</strong> analysis, writing, revision etc. of the manuscript <strong>and</strong> yet do not meet<br />
the criteria to be an author should be mentioned in the acknowledgement<br />
part.<br />
14. The manuscript which has been presented previously as an abstract in any<br />
congress or symposium may be mentioned on condition with the statement<br />
of the date <strong>and</strong> the place of the meeting.<br />
15. Abbreviations should be internationally accepted <strong>and</strong> should be defined accordingly<br />
in the text in parenthesis when first mentioned <strong>and</strong> used in the text.<br />
16. Title page of the manuscript should include Title (Turkish <strong>and</strong> English), running<br />
title (Turkish <strong>and</strong> English, not more than 40 characters including spaces),<br />
Author(s), Institution(s) <strong>and</strong> Address for Correspondence with e-mail address,<br />
fax <strong>and</strong> phone numbers. Authors should indicate on this page whether the<br />
study has been presented previously as an abstract in any congress or symposium.<br />
17. Abstracts should be prepared in Turkish <strong>and</strong> English for all manuscripts except<br />
“Letters to the Editor”. Abbreviations should be avoided in abstracts. References,<br />
tables <strong>and</strong> citations should not be used.<br />
18. There should be two to fi<strong>ve</strong> key words complying with the Index Medicus Medical<br />
Subject Headings (MeSH) (www.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/MBrowser.html).<br />
19. Research Articles should include; Title, structured abstract (Introduction, Materials<br />
<strong>and</strong> Methods/Patients <strong>and</strong> Methods, Results <strong>and</strong> Conclusion, limited to<br />
300 words), <strong>and</strong> key words in Turkish <strong>and</strong> English, Introduction, Materials<br />
<strong>and</strong> Methods/Patients <strong>and</strong> Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgement<br />
<strong>and</strong> References. Research articles should not exceed 5000 words <strong>and</strong> 40 references.<br />
20. The Editor’s approval is required before submitting a review article since reviews<br />
to be published are planned by the Editor.<br />
21. The reviews should include; Title, unstructured abstract <strong>and</strong> key words in Turkish<br />
<strong>and</strong> English <strong>and</strong> the main text section. Limit the abstract to 300 words.<br />
The number of references should not exceed 40.<br />
22. Case reports should include; Title, abstract <strong>and</strong> key words in Turkish <strong>and</strong> English,<br />
Introduction, Case, Discussion <strong>and</strong> References. Case reports should ha<strong>ve</strong><br />
a short introduction <strong>and</strong> discussion sections, <strong>and</strong> an unstructured abstract<br />
should be prepared as one paragraph. The number of references should not<br />
exceed 20.<br />
23. Concise independent reports representing a significant contribution in the related<br />
field may be submitted as a short communication. The maximum length<br />
of a short communication is 1500 words. Short communications should include<br />
title, an unstructured paragraph of abstract <strong>and</strong> 2-5 key words in Turkish<br />
<strong>and</strong> English. The main text should include a maximum of one figure <strong>and</strong> two<br />
tables. Number of references should not exceed 10.<br />
24. The letters to the Editor is for letters that are addressing issues or exchanging<br />
views on topics arising from published articles or uncommitted subjects without<br />
original research interest. It should not exceed 1000 words <strong>and</strong> not include<br />
an abstract. The number of references should not exceed 10.<br />
25. Figures <strong>and</strong> tables should be numbered according to the sequence of referral<br />
within the text. Each item should be cited in the text.<br />
26. Each table should be prepared with double spacing on a separate page. Tables<br />
should ha<strong>ve</strong> a brief title. Authors should place explanatory matter in footnotes<br />
not in the heading. Explanations should be made for all nonst<strong>and</strong>ard<br />
abbreviations in footnotes. The following symbols should be used for abbreviations,<br />
in sequence: *,†,‡,§,||,,**,††,‡‡. Each table should be cited in text.

27. Figures should be either professionally drawn or photographed, <strong>and</strong> these<br />
items should be submitted as photographic-quality digital images. Figures<br />
should be submitted in a format that will produce high-quality image (for<br />
example, JPEG or GIF). Authors should control the images of such files on a<br />
computer screen before submitting them to be sure they meet their own quality<br />
st<strong>and</strong>ards.<br />
28. X-ray films, scans <strong>and</strong> other diagnostic images, as well as pictures of pathology<br />
specimens should be submitted as sharp, glossy, black-<strong>and</strong>-white or color<br />
photographic images. Letters, numbers, <strong>and</strong> symbols on figures should be<br />
clear <strong>and</strong> consistent throughout, <strong>and</strong> large enough to remain legible when<br />
the figure is reduced for publication. Figures should be made as self-explanatory<br />
as possible. For recognizable photographs of patients, signed releases of<br />
the patient or of his/her legal representati<strong>ve</strong> should be submitted; otherwise,<br />
patient names or eyes must be blocked out to pre<strong>ve</strong>nt identification.<br />
29. Type or print out legends for illustrations using double spacing, starting on a<br />
separate page, with Arabic numerals corresponding to the illustrations. When<br />
symbols, arrows, numbers or letters are used to identify parts of illustrations,<br />
identify <strong>and</strong> explain each one clearly in the legend.<br />
30. When the author(s) has/ha<strong>ve</strong> used a figure or table from another source, permission<br />
of the author <strong>and</strong> publisher must be obtained, the necessary printing<br />
permission document must be provided <strong>and</strong> the source referred to in the text.<br />
31. References<br />
Data <strong>and</strong> manuscript that ha<strong>ve</strong> not yet been published should not be cited as<br />
reference. These should be stated in the main text as “author(s), unpublished<br />
data, year”.<br />
References should be numbered consecuti<strong>ve</strong>ly in the order in which they are<br />
mentioned in the text. Identify references in the text, tables <strong>and</strong> legends at<br />
the end of the sentences in brackets. List all authors up to six authors. For<br />
more than six authors, list the first six authors followed by “et al”. Journal names<br />
should be abbreviated as listed in “Index Medicus” or in “ULAKBIM/Turkish<br />
Medical Index”. Note the following examples:<br />
