THE PRESIDENT’S CORNER 

By the time this RCS is in your hands the new Board will have been officially installed and we will be off to a 

great year. Throughout the year we will focus on Fun, Fellowship and Visitation. We hope the coming year will meet that 

same challenge for the entire square dance community. 

We do need three couples for the Mid-Tex committee and would appreciate any volunteers. President’s please 

talk this up with your club members. After all it’s everyone’s responsibility to keep and make and preserve this great 

form of fun and recreation. It will be a fond memory to those who join in the fellowship of MID-TEX committee work. 

You meet fine people and make friendships that last a lifetime. We had a great MID-TEX in 2004 that will be hard to 

rival. It was a lot of hard work but ask anyone of them and they will say it was worth it. There are quite a few people that 

have volunteered twice and they are special people and should be recognized. 

I noticed several couples who no longer dance still come to the special dances and volunteer for duties they can 

still handle. They so enjoyed the times they spent in square dance and rounds that they still support in any way possible 

the ones that still are able. They certainly deserve many yellowrocks for that kind of loyalty 

It has come to our attention from the TSFSRD that the state ticket program is unlawful. Because of the way it is 

done the law calls it a lottery. The state will hold a delegates meeting in Oct 04 to solve this problem. In the meantime 

they would appreciate any ideas anyone can think of that will make money to operate on. So please forward any thoughts 

you may have to us. We will in turn send them on. Thank you and we will see you around the squares.

Patsy and William Winnie 

William and Patsy have been ASRDA president 

for two separate terms, are currently serving as 

historians. They have been very active in ASRDA for 

many years. 

APACHE RAINDANCERS 

Well our caller Al Frazer went missing for a 

couple of Mondays this month. 

Chet Miles filled in for Al while he was at Nationals and 

then Tony Sikes filled in for Al when he was calling in 

Montana. 

Joe and Nelda Magruder have a new grandson, 

which is very exciting. 

We would like to thank everyone who came out 

and supported the Benefit dance on July 30 th for Randy 

Lumpkin (Jack and Lois Williams son-in-law). All the 

Apache’s would like to extend their sympathy to Mattie 

Bartlett whose brother passed away this month. 

We would like to remind everyone about the 

upcoming 5 th Monday dance, hosted by the Apache 

Raindancers and sponsored by Texas Bluebonnets, 

Apache Raindancers, and Promenaders Square Dance 

Clubs.

SWINGING LAKERS 

Swinging Lakers were very pleased to complete 

our plus lessons in July. Graduation dance is scheduled 

for August 4th. Gary Bible did a great job of working 

with the students. We had close to two squares learning 

plus. We are fortunate to have such a good teacher 

teaching them. You should see many of those folks at 

your dances after they complete the plus lessons. They 

will even be in the plus tips! 

Swinging Lakers have decided to change our 

dance schedule to EVERY Wednesday evening from 

7:30 - 9:30 except 5th Wednesday. This should be 

effective in August. Watch Yellow Rock Email for 

official announcements. 

Everyone has been asking, so we are telling: 

We have scheduled our 2nd Boat Dance for Saturday, 

September 25, 2004. Please mark your calendars to 

attend this sea-faring extravaganza! We are planning to 

start selling tickets this month. Watch RCS and Yellow 

Rock for details. 

We will also be electing new officers in 

August. Many thanks go to Perry Sanderson, Keith & 

Colleen, Richard & Eva, and Linn & Beth. Their 

service to as club officers has been fantastic and is much 

appreciated. We will report the names of the new 

officers in the next RCS. 

Please come visit us on Wednesday evenings 

(except 5th). Come hear Gary Bible call. We dance 

from 7:30 - 9:30 at the K-Oaks Clubhouse in Lago 

Vista. We'll be sure to come visit you when we have the 

opportunity. We are looking forward to seeing you at 

your next dance!

DEATH OF FORMER PRESIDENT 

Diane Parker passed away Saturday, July 10. 

Tommy and Diane are past ASRDA presidents and they 

were instrumental in starting the Frank Monk Teen 

Scholarship fund, now referred to as the teen 

scholarship fund.


SHIRTS AND SKIRTS 

Things have been kind of quiet at Shirt's and 

Skirt's this past month. Lots of folks are either gone or 

have something going on. 

Those that were able to go to the Swinging 

Lakers Anniversary dance reported a swell time. We 

had a few in attendance at the Inaugural Ball for the 

new ASRDA officers and it was a nice dance, also. 

September 11 is the date of our annual " End of 

Summer" dance and it would be great to see you all 

there. It happens in the San Gabriel Community Center 

which is located in San Gabriel Park in Georgetown. 

Check the flyer in this issue for specifics regarding the 

dance. 

Flash: we have new members, Chuck and 

Sheryl Sherman are now both retired and have rejoined 

our club. 

Another Flash: We are planning to begin 

lessons on September 15, two open houses on the 15 and 

22 and then on the 29th we will have a 2 hour session 

for the new class. We don't dance on the 5th 

Wednesday so thought it would be good to have an 

extended session of classes that night. For more

PROMENADERS 

Attention all dancers! The Promenaders are 

now dancing from 7:30 –9:30 every Monday night. 

A big congratulations to Gary and Linda Bible 

on the birth of their new granddaughter. Her name is 

Megan Johanna. 

The Baylors and Gerlings have been on 

extended vacations this summer. We will be glad to 

have them back soon dancing with us. 

Mark your calendars for October 25, 2004. 

Lottie Ainsworth with be in town and she and Gary will 

be calling our regular Monday night dance. It will be a 

Plus Dance. It should be a fun evening as she and Gary 

are both outstanding callers. 

A big thanks to all of the visitors dancing DBD 

with us every Monday. Gary is really challenging us to 

be better dancers. We welcome all dancers to join us for 

a fun time. 


PRE-CONVENTION DANCE 

Dear Texas Dancer, 

The Pre-Convention for the 2006 Texas 

National Square Dance Convention will be Saturday, 

FEBRUARY 19, 2005, at the Henry B. Gonzales 

Convention Center in San Antonio. This will be a 

FREE dance for everyone who is registered for the 2006 

Texas convention. Please wear your Texas dance 

costume and attend. If you do not have a Texas 

costume, wear your choice of square dancing attire and 

come anyway. 

There will be an all day meeting that Saturday at 

the convention center informing every one of all the 

plans for the 2006 NSDC in San Antonio. Everyone is 

invited to attend this, EVERY TEXAN needs to show 

their support and register for the TEXAS 2006 NSDC. 

Register and come to your free dance February 19, 

2005! 

Jim & Robbyn Cranford, the 55th NSDC 

Publicity Chairman, will be sending everyone details of 

the 2005 KICK-OFF dance and the 2006 Texas National 

Square Dance Convention.

PINE KNOTS 

The Pine Knot Squares club has been closed for 

the summer. We will return from vacation on August 

23rd. We are looking forward to another year of fun 

dancing with Arnold Gladson. We are going to offer 

square dance lessons with an open house on August 

23rd and August 30th. Square dance lessons will start 

on the Monday following the open houses. Angels are 

welcome to join us at the Bastrop Recreation Center at 

1008 Water Street in Bastrop for our lessons. 

We are really looking forward to our 

anniversary dance on September 10th. Our caller will 

be Joe Saltel. Joe is a nationally known caller and will 

help us celebrate one year of fun dancing with our 

club. We have gone a long ways and we will celebrate 

that. The anniversary dance will be held at the Bastrop 

Methodist church at 7:30PM - 10:00PM. The donation 

will be $6. If anyone has any questions, please call 

Tom Arnold or Nancy at 512 360-3590. We are 

looking forward to a great year of dancing.

WATERLOO SQUARES 

We celebrated the 4th of July in Shady Hollow 

on the 3rd, participating in their annual parade and 

festivities afterwards. More than two squares of 

Waterloos and friends rode on a trailer, beautifully 

decorated and pulled by Steve Andricak’s “Old 

Faithful”, then danced for the crowd at the end of the 

parade. Pat Castro called a great 3 tips, then we got the 

spectators into the Texas Cotton-Eyed Joe. They had a 

blast! The parade committee awarded us with a 

certificate thanking us for our many years of supporting 

these 4th of July events! 

Waterloos are continuing with lessons – our Mainstream 

students joined our regular dance on June 29 th to see 

what square dancing “is really all about!” They had a 

great time, and even showed the hard-badgers some new 

moves! They completed their lessons, and graduated, 

along with the DBD Plus group, on July 27 th . Let’s 

welcome them into Square Dancing. The DBD dancers 

are back in their clubs with newly honed skills and a 

better appreciation for “regular” dancing! 

Waterloos, with Gary Bible as our Professor, will start a 

new set of lessons on September 9 th , with the 9 th and 16 th 

being free. The Beginner lessons will be at 7:30 PM, 

and Plus lessons at 9:00 at Faith Presbyterian Church on 

Thursdays. 

Look forward with us to dancing with our 

August callers: Jim Kline (Rawlins, WY) will open 

August for us on the 3 rd , followed by Cris Crisler (New 

Braunfels) on the 10 th , Jimmy Johnson (Austin) on the 

17 th , Jerry Lynn (Killeen) on the 24 th , and Bill Wright 

(San Antonio) on the 31 st . Our starter for September 

will be Brad Caldwell from Georgetown on the 7 th . 


MERRY MIXERS 

The Merry Mixers invite one and all to an 

evening with Mr. YELLOW ROCK, Olin Dearing and 

his wife JoAnne. It is with great pride we offer an 

opportunity to spend time with that volunteer of 

volunteers who consistently provides superior support to 

square dancing in Central Texas. An Evening with Mr. 

YELLOW ROCK will be held this September 30, 2004 

at the South Austin Senior Activity Center with two well 

known callers, Brad Caldwell and Jimmy Johnson. 

Organizations such as ASRDA and the square dance 

clubs that make up this organization happen because of 

volunteers. Most efforts are done behind the scenes 

with little knowledge of who actually does what part. 

On this evening we offer an opportunity to put a face 

with the name, YELLOW ROCK. Plan to join in this 

evening of recognition to Olin and JoAnne. See the 

flyer for additional information. 

Merry Mixers will be celebrating Joe Lowe’s 

birthday this month, as well as anniversaries for Walt & 

Arlene Fitzpatrick and Al & Linda Green. When you 

see these fine folks give them an extra hand shake and 

hug. 

We have missed the company of Charles Payne, 

Walt and Arlene Fitzpatrick, as well as Gene and Ivy 

Lynch. They are on the sick roster which prevents their 

being with us on a regular basis. Keep them in your 

prayers, asking for rapid healing. The Merry Mixers 

look forward to their return to our Thursday night 

evening of joy. We also encourage you to remember our 

young warriors who go in harm’s way, and those 

warriors returning home. They all need our consistent 

support.

TEXAS BLUEBONNETS 

The Texas Bluebonnets would like to thank 

everyone who attended our graduation dance in June. 

We had a great class of students and thoroughly enjoyed 

getting to know them and being angels for them. Please 

help them feel welcome to the world of square dancing 

when you see them out and about in the Austin area. 

We will continue dancing throughout the 

summer and hope to see many of you at our dances - - 

visitors are always welcome!! But please remember that 

we have a new club location. We are now dancing at 

the recreation building on the campus of the Austin 

State Hospital. It’s centrally located and is easy to find. 

Enter the campus from 41st and Guadalupe Streets. 

Immediately upon entering, turn right. The road will 

fork, take the right fork. You will be traveling along the 

campus road parallel to Guadalupe, just inside the 

fence. Look for the first large parking lot on your left ... 

about a block. Enter the lot and park as far to the North 

as possible. Follow the sidewalk bounded by handrails 

beside the educational building. Go past the educational 

building and you will see the recreational building on 

the right. 

The Texas Bluebonnets are very excited about 

our new slate of officers that were installed in July. The

WHEEL AND DEALS 

The Wheel-n-Deals dance the first four 

Thursdays of each month at the Dunbar Recreation 

Center in San Marcos. Chet Miles calls the first and 

third Thursdays and guests call the second and fourth 

Thursdays. Our guests for July were Cris Crisler and 

Tony Sikes. We also had a special fifth Thursday dance 

on July 29 with Gary Bible as the caller. Scheduled 

callers are Wayne Weston for the August 12 and Bill 

Wright for the August 26. 

We nearly always have guests from Come and 

Take It Squares at our weekly dance but on July 8 they 

came in mass and took our banner. That's ok because we 

always enjoy going to Gonzales.

Theresa graduated in August 2003 and has 

become very active in the square dance community and 

is currently taking Plus lessons with the Swinging 

Lakers. She is the treasurer for Buckles and Bows and 

has just been installed as ASRDA treasurer. Watch for 

Theresa at the special dances, she likes to attend them 

all.


CLICKETY CLOGGERS 

The Clicketys have been extra busy the last 

quarter. We have relocated. Now we dance at D'Ette 

Dance Studio, 1807 Slaughter Lane, Suite #325. It's on 

the Southeast corner of Slaughter Manchaca in the 

shopping center with the Albertson's, Pizza Hut, Tres 

Amigos, so there will probably not be many skinny 

cloggers again!!! 

On June 26th, we had a delightful time dancing 

on our float at the Luling Watermelon Thump - even 

winning a ribbon. A crowd of about 15 of us were there 

dancing like crazy. There sure a lot of Luling people 

who support their Watermelon Thump. People were 

lining the streets everywhere sitting on lawn chairs and 

sipping mint julips, or whatever. 

The Exhibition Team performed in front of the 

Paramount Theater on Friday, July 16th, for the 

Downtown Austin Alliance. After dancing there, many 

of us continued on to Waco to the Double Toe Jam. 

Talk about fun and dancing new stuff, that's the place. 

We are really looking forward to our 

BEGINNER'S CLOGGING LESSONS that start on 

September 9th. They will continue through December. 

They will be held at our regular studio and there will be 

lots of help from the regulars. We are all always 

anxious for new dancers to enjoy themselves and we 

will help any way we can. Lots of square dancers are 

both square dancers and cloggers, and the two are really 

very compatible and quite a few moves overlap. It is 

really keen to think: "Hey, I already know how to do 

that!". 

Have a great rest of the summer and we hope to 

see you in September.

CADLA 

We are sliding into the final month of the 

summer! Now is the time to think about getting all of 

your friends, neighbors, associates, church members, 

and anyone else you come in contact with to give Square 

Dancing a try. Most, if not all, of your CADLA callers 

will be teaching lessons beginning in September. They 

will be taught on several different nights in many 

locations including South Austin, Central Austin, San 

Marcos, Bastrop, Cedar Park, Lago Vista, Georgetown, 

and Thorndale. If you have some friends who would 

like to try it, have them find a location and night that is 

convenient to them. Then come with them to an open 

house. They can learn at ANY club and then dance at 

ANY club after lessons. Help us grow the activity! 

CADLA Callers/Spouses Al & Connie Frazier, 

Don & Patty Brown, and Arnold & Marie Gladson 

attended the National Square Dance Convention in 

Denver, Colorado, June 24 - 26. We called assigned tips 

and took a few turns as Master of Ceremonies 

introducing other callers. All callers donate their time at 

the convention and pay their own expenses to be there. 

Thanks to these folks for giving some Central Texas 

representation to the convention. It is fascinating to see 

the variety of calling techniques all delivered under 

ONE ROOF. It was also good to see several of our 

friends from Austin and Thorndale during the 

convention. You will have the opportunity to 

experience this FIRST HAND by just going down to 

San Antonio, location of the June 2006 National 

Convention. Put it on your calendar and plan to attend. 

We are looking forward to seeing all of you at 

our dances. We will keep calling and hope you will be 

there to dance to us. We really do need each other to 

make this work. Please come to your club dances and 

enjoy the activity and help us to make it become even 

better in the Austin Area. We are here to serve you.
