Quincy, IL
Christmas & Holy Family December 24 & 25, 2011
Dear Parishioners,
“The Twenty-fifth Day of December, when ages beyond number had run
their course from the creation of the world, when God in the beginning created
heaven and earth, and formed man in his own likeness; when century upon century
had passed since the Almighty set his bow in the clouds after the Great Flood,
as a sign of covenant and peace; in the twenty-first century since Abraham, our
father in faith, came out of Ur of the Chaldees; in the thirteenth century since the
people of Israel were led by Moses in the Exodus from Egypt; around the thousandth
year since David was anointed King; in the sixty-fifth week of the prophecy
of Daniel; in the one hundred and ninety-fourth Olympiad; in the year seven
hundred and fifty-two since the foundation of the City of Rome; in the fortysecond
year of the reign of Caesar Octavian Augustus, the whole world being at
peace, JESUS CHRIST, eternal God and Son of the eternal Father, desiring to
consecrate the world by his most loving presence, was conceived by the Holy
Spirit, and when nine months had passed since his conception, was born of the
Virgin Mary in Bethlehem of Judah, and was made man: The Nativity of Our
Lord Jesus Christ according to the flesh.” This beautiful proclamation is the announcement
of the Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord from the Roman Martyrology.
It has been a tradition in our Church to proclaim this announcement in
song at the Midnight Mass on Christmas, a tradition that we will maintain.
Today, we celebrate God’s love being revealed to us in flesh and blood.
In terms of doctrines of faith, today is Incarnation of our God, “the Word becoming
flesh and making his dwelling among us;” in terms of Scripture, today is the
day that the words of St. John are fulfilled when He writes: “God so loved the
world that He gave His only Son that whoever believes in him may not die but
may have eternal life; and in terms of love, today is the fullest expression of
love— for God not only shows us the extent of His love for us, but also reveals to
us in flesh and blood how we need to love. Christmas is truly God’s gift of Himself
to us. And in response, I invite you to consider some Christmas gifts to Him:
For your enemies—forgiveness; For a friend—your heart
For family—your love and caring; For all—charity
For every child—a good example; For yourself—respect
And for your parish family—your time, talents, and treasures
Merry CHRISTmas!
Faith in Action Today
Fr. Leo at his first Mass at St. Peter’s
Managing Money as a
Matter of Faith
It is well documented that
money problems lead to breakdowns
in families and faith. That
is one reason why St. Peter Parish
has sponsored Dave Ramsey’s
Financial Peace University
for the past three years. Through
the program, families learn new
ways to manage their money and
improve their lives.
The program will be offered
again starting in January.
Classes will meet on consecutive
Monday nights from 6:30 to 9:30
p.m. from Jan. 23 through April
16, and — thanks to a subsidy
from the Diocese of Springfield in
Illinois — the cost for all materials
per family unit is only $50 for
parishioners — half the normal
cost. Jeff Buckner will facilitate
the program. Registration is on a
first-come/first-served basis. To
sign up, please phone the Parish
Office at 222-3155 weekdays
St. Peter Parish is a Catholic Family of Faith
Bringing the Light of Christ to All by Serving Others.
Welcome to Our New Pastor
On Jan. 11 in the late afternoon, St. Peter Parish was blessed
with the arrival of Msgr. Leo J. Enlow, our new pastor, and the other German
Shepherd, his dog Mollie.
Arriving in Quincy after a heart-breaking leave - taken from St.
Anthony Parish and High School in Effingham, where he’d served for 21
1/2 years, Fr. Leo quickly began to make his mark on our Parish and,
indeed, Catholicism in West Central Illinois. In his first months here, this
gifted homilist and teacher initiated regular weekday Masses at Quincy
Notre Dame High School, rallied parishioners for our first large-scale
Parish Picnic, completed the much-needed parking lot and school-bus
drop-off in southwest corner of our campus, launched a quicklysuccessful
“adopt-a-desk” program in our school, and hosted his first
annual State-of-the-Parish Meeting. What is especially intriguing is that
our new leader says his first year mostly has been spent just getting to
know the Parish! Stay tuned and fasten your seat-belts!
Supporting Our Troops
Many times we forget that most of the men
and women who are serving in the military are around
the age of 20 and may be away from home for the
first time. As a Valentine Day project, St. Peter Parishioners
donated 17 shipping crates full of toiletries,
snacks, and other items for troops who were preparing
to be deployed to Afghanistan. Among parishioners
who was a direct recipient was Dan Bowe, son of
Sue and Jim. Thanks to Ann Anderson and Sue Bowe
for preparing the collection for shipment and to our
Social Concerns Committee for paying shipping costs.
Living our Catholic faith
by caring for the earth
through recycling
Ann Anderson and
Sue Bowe
Earth Stewards
Sr. Joanne
Volk’s 6th grade class
at St. Peter School (left)
conducts a school-wide
recycling program. Every
week or two, the students
pick up accumulated
recyclables from
each classroom and get
them to a recycling center.
The lesson carries
over to home. When
asked whether their
families recycled, this
class responds with an
overwhelming “YES!”
Stitches of Love
St. Peter Parishioners who are willing to use
their knitting, crocheting, and sewing skills in a praycentered
outreach make dozens of prayer blankets
and prayer shawls each year through our St. Veronica
Guild. These items are blessed and given to the sick,
the homebound, and those who are joining our
Church. All are welcome and can perform this ministry
at home and — if they wish — attend monthly gettogethers.
Among members are Confirmation Candidates
Rachel Holtmeyer, a St. Peter School student,
and her cousin Jordyn, a PSR Student.
Grader Kristin Wolff not
only has a passion for
reading, but a desire to
make a difference.
When she learned from
the director of Cheerful
Home that books were
needed, she decided to
do something about it.
Kristin initiated a collection
of new and gently-used
books. The result?
At last contact she
had collected well over
700 books! Thanks to
all who participated.
in a way that not only
brought people together
as the school year resumed,
but also raised
$37,000 after expenses.
Fr. Leo’s column continued...
Just to let you know that I will be away from the
parish from Monday, December 26th to Saturday, December
31st, visiting with my brother and his family. I
have never been there around Christmas and am excited
to see how the expert in decorating for Christmas carries
it out. This opportunity is available because of the
generous heart of Fr. Bauer.
On Wednesday, December 28th, the Church celebrates
the Feast of the Holy Innocents. This feast
commemorates as Scripture tells us the “massacre of all
the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity two years old
and under” as ordered by Herod. Herod wanted to find
the “anointed one”, “the Messiah” in order to destroy
Him. As the feast indicates, these young ones were Holy
and Innocent and gave their lives for Christ. We will
be having a special Mass that night at 7:00 p.m. for all
parents, brothers, and sisters, relatives and friends who
have lost also holy and innocent young people. Everyone
is invited to attend.
ON THE LIGHTER SIDE: A Sunday school
teacher was telling her class of 4th graders the Christmas
story about the three Wise Men bringing gifts to
the baby Jesus. A little girl who had recently become
the big sister of a brand-new-baby brother said, “Well, I
guess gold and all that stuff are all right, but I’ll bet
Mary really wished somebody had brought some diapers.”
On behalf of the parish staff and the personnel
of our school, I want to wish each and every one of a
very Blessed and Merry Christmas.
Bringing the Light of Christ to Children through Totus Tuus
When St. Peter Parish decided to
sponsor Totus Tuus — a dynamic,
Catholic alternative to nondenominational
Vacation Bible
School — three years ago, the
leaders hoped the program
would be well-received. After its
third year, the jury is in: for our
parish families, Totus Tuus is a
fun way to reinforce our faith.
Seventh Grader
Makes a Difference for
Blessing Cancer Center
When the 7 th grade
class at St. Peter School decided
to sponsor a Spirit Day
to raise money for Breast
Cancer Awareness, Allison
Hutson decided she wanted
to do more than to simply
donate 25-cents as payment
for being out of uniform for
the day.
As she considered
what she might do, Allison
had an idea: “I’d seen people
wearing bracelets to support a cure for breast
cancer,” she says, “but some of them had inappropriate
sayings on them.” She decided
she could do better, designed a bracelet of her
own, and got permission to sell them at school
for a minimum donation of 25-cents.
The response was outstanding. Allison
raised well over $100 for the Blessing Breast
Center.
“I feel really blessed with everything
and am overwhelmed with feeling that I’m
making a difference,” she says. “I feel like I’m
following what God expects of me.”
Bob Lundberg, a candidate
for the Permanent Diaconate,
was installed as an
Acolyte on May 15 at the
Cathedral. Bob will be ordained
a Deacon this coming
June.
Feeding the Hungry
St. Peter 6th Grader Jenna Zanger decided to
make a difference this Christmas Season. She
sent a letter to friends and family members
asking them to make donations to purchase
Gene Grawe cards for local supermarkets. Her
initiative had raised $965 from about 50 donors
two weeks before Christmas. Jenna and
her cousin, Madison Sperry, a QND freshman,
will distribute the cards to people who need
them before Christmas. As Jenna says, “I am
blessed to have a living family who provides
for my needs. But, there are many people in
our community who aren’t as lucky as me.”
Jenna says she got the idea from her Grandpa,
who she has helped with this holiday project
in the past. “I want to make a difference
this holiday season,” she says.
A Matter of
Social Concern
One of the most beloved
traditions at St. Peter Parish is
the Social Concerns Committee’s
annual cookie sale each December.
This year’s initiative raised
nearly $1,900. Kathy Schuckman
notes that his money — along
with donations during the Fifth
Sunday collections, are used for
a wide variety of community
needs, from helping with rent and
utilities, assisting with the Unmet
Needs Committee of the United
Way and Horizons Soup Kitchen,
and more.
Devoted to Decorating
Thanks to members of our Church Decorating Committee
for using their time and talent to make our worship space
beautiful. Above are some Committee Members: Marcia Evans,
Jane Nolan, Tamy Cassady, Susan Moore and Mary Jo DeVries.
(Mary Talken is absent from the picture.)
St. Peter Parish-
ioners donated
over 800 gifts to
make Christmas
Merry for area
families. Thanks
to everyone who
participated.
My Dear Friends in Christ, December 1, 2011
One of my greatest privileges as your bishop is communicating
with you through my regular column in Catholic
Times, the official newspaper of the Diocese of Springfield
in Illinois.
I am proud to be a part of the Catholic press and to be
publisher of a Catholic newspaper that provides news of
the diocese, the nation and the world.
The purpose of the Catholic press is more than merely reporting
“what” is happening. The Catholic press tries to
explain the meaning of world and national developments
through the lens of our Catholic faith. In Catholic Times you
can read about important events in our parishes and
schools. Your diocesan newspaper brings you stories of
people living fervent, faith-filled lives right here in the 28
counties of our diocese.
I have found Catholic Times to be interesting, informative
and solidly grounded in Catholic teaching. Throughout the
year, readers can count on Catholic Times to inform, educate,
teach, serve and inspire the people of God in central
Illinois.
As is our long-standing custom, I expect Catholic Times to
be sent to each household in the diocese, either digitally
or through the mail. At $15 annually, Catholic Times is a
most inexpensive and valuable way for us to keep informed
on the vital issues that affect us and our faith.
Please renew your subscription by contributing to the second
collection the weekend of January 7-8, 2012.
With thanks for your generous support of Catholic Times,
I remain...
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Thomas John Paprocki
Bishop of Springfield in Illinois
