New immigrants moving to
Squamish will have some extra
help adjusting to life in their new
country thanks to a federal gov-
ernment program.
Robert Holmes is currently
recruiting residents in the Howe
Sound corridor to befiiend new
immigrants as part of the Sea to
“There’s a need to
ty, participating in the community
not only working but also cultural-
ly.”
One of the primary tenets of
the program is- to promote multi-
culturalism with Squamish’s two
largest ethnic groups, Indo-Cana-
dim and Filipino families.
The program was set up after
the federal government deter-
mined there was a need to get new
immigrants to participate in com-
munity activities as well as taking
advankge of community services,
‘+
“The way it works is I recruit
get immigrant volunteers to participate in the
a newcomer and help make the
new Canadian’s life easier and
better,” Holmes said. “They
would participate in activities and
outings or show them Canadian
recreational activities such as skiing,
skating, hiking or swimming.
“They’ll work on the leisure
activities right through the practical,
everyday problems such as
where to bank, how to take the
local transit, how to use household
appliances as well as emotional
support.”
In Squamish, the program is
currently a pilot project determin-
but Holmes is proceeding as if the
prop’s implementation is gumanteed.
He is currently recruiting
both volunteers and new immigrant
clients to take part in the
program in communities between
Britannia Beach and D’Arcy.
Holmes said the response from
the local Indo-Canadian community
has been positive so far with
one of the community leaders volunteering
to serve as a host.
. Holmes is looking for no financial
commitment from the volunteers,
only an offer of six months
of fiiendship to either a immigrant
“We would like to see a xnini-
mum of two hours per week in
meeting one; another, anything less
does not facilitate a harmonious
relationship,” Holmes said. “A
volunteer has to be compassion-
ate, patient and understanding.”
Holmes added ethnic origin is
not a consideration for the volun-
teer, the only requirement is that
they promote the use of English
whenever possible.
Sky Friendship Host program.
The program has been running in
eight separate areas of the Lower
Mainland and began operating in
Squamish in early January.
According to Holmes,
Squamish is a natural choice for
the program.
“There’s a growing population
and a growing immigrant gopula-
tion as well through the federal
immigration policy of family class
members,” Be said. “There’s also
a need to get the immigrant popu-
