Purther investigation the this succeeds
of the contract for,the removal of the
warehouse of Davies & Co., at the
foot of Bishop street will be taken up
by the territorial grand jury next Fri
day. City Attorney Arthur M. Brown
said Saturday.
The investigation is believed to
have begun Friday, W. It. Hobby,
acting superintendent of pubHc.worKs,
and D. J. Sullivan, said to be a San
Francisco : contractdr, having been
subpoenaed to appear before the jury
as witnesses and to bring with them
certain - documents, . advertisements
plans relating to the removal of
the ' warehoused
W. C Woodward, former assistant
superintendent of public works, was
also suopoenaea oy Detective
T. but, because of being in the
country, could not be present. It is
understood that both Hobby and Sul- -
ivan examined by, the jurymen.
' Hobby, today declared that the
dea that Is against the law to le- -
the board of agnculture and forestry
to warn rancuers and dairymen
against this obnoxious plant and to
use every possible means to prevent
its further spread.
The Spiny Pig Weed is closely rereiiners
to
at found on
mainland and in n a wall grows to a
maraet five
at basis an
on n&lr of
at
sharp thorns at the base of the leaves
Cattle will not eat the plant and shun
localities where it occurs.
This weed is particularly obnoxious
because its seeds, considering the
size of the plant, are relatively small
and are formed In enormous numbers,
an one plant producing as many as 115,-60- 0
seeds. Since the seeds mature
at
long before they are suspected and
are shaken off Ly the wind, it is im-
at
portant to destroy th plant befor
the seeds form or 'ome to maturity,
Porto
in order to pretnt the weed from
spreading.
It is, therefore, suggested that ia
order to prevent the occupation and
ruination of pasture lands by the
spread of the Spiny Pig Weed, all
persons owing or controlling such
lands, attack at once the weed where
found, removing it by the and
burning the plant seeds and all.
