Soilmec, we are always on the customers’ side!
We have carried out a thorough analysis together with the operators of our sector
involving the whole Soilmec network. Virtually, we listened to all “desires” of those
who have invested in foundation rigs for their business. Afterwards, we met (Dealer
Meeting) to exchange, share and compared the information we collected. Three days
of hard work, but this common work was so helpful since, on one side, it allowed us to
confirm the choices we made in the past and, on the other side, it oriented the direction
of our new plans.
We are confident with regard to the work completed and we can state that all products
offered by Soilmec have been envisaged and developed as per the requirements of those
Simone Trevisani, Managing Director.
who, will directly use them in the field. We are not only talking about products, but also
services. Services just like the latest DMS (Drilling Mate System) which, besides reporting in
which is ready to report even the slightest setback and to support useful information about production.
I would like to especially mention, in this issue, the reports received from some job sites which are currently employing
Drillmec S.p.A., a Trevi Group company, has been awarded a significant new contract
to supply 25 hydraulic oil and gas drill rigs each of 75 tonnes (“HH”); the agreement
includes an option, reserved for the customer, to buy a further 125 hydraulic rigs.
The rigs will be manufactured in the factory of Drillmec S.p.A. in Piacenza (Italy). Rigs have
been commissioned by the customer Greka Drilling Ltd, a company listed on the London
Stock Exchange, the main independent operator unconventional in China, where Drillmec
rigs will operate in gas exploration, including CBM (Coal Bed Methane), and Shale Gas
exploration, in Shanxi province. Greka Drilling Ltd, an innovative drilling company, chose
Drillmec S.p.A., a company with a strong long-term focus on research and development,
because of the technological content of its “HH” (Hydraulic Hoist) plants and its ability to
respond to local requirements including the on-site training of personnel and the provision of
after-sales service. These “HH” plants allow the achievement of very high levels of operating
performance, total respect for the environment and a high degree of safety.
Simone Trevisani, Drillmec MD, stated: “For Drillmec this contract has a significant strategic
value. On the one hand it demonstrates the competitiveness of our technology at a global
level and its usefulness in the water, geothermic, gas, CBM and petroleum sectors, while
TREVIICOS, managing partner of DC Slurry Joint Venture, has chosen a Soilmec “Cougar”
hydromill carried by an SC-120 crawler crane to construct 172,000 square feet (16,000 m2 )
of slurry walls comprising 96 panels measuring 36 and 42 inches (920 and 1,070 mm)
with an average depth of 116-130 feet (36-40 m). The slurry walls are necessary for
the construction of the new 1,000-room Marriot Marquis Hotel in Washington D.C. to
be built next to the city’s most important Convention Center on Massachusetts Ave. The
TREVIICOS contract includes installation of 21 tiebacks along Massachusetts Avenue
and drilling of 142 drill shafts. Among other challenges, the project involves working
around the Pepco power station and several underground live power cables.
A “Cougar” hydromill supported by an SC-120 crawler
crane is being used by TREVIICOS for a key slurry wall
project in Washington D.C.
DMS (Drilling Mate System) installed
on Soilmec “Cougar” hydromill.
The equipment used on this construction site – a
Soilmec hydromill mounted on a Soilmec SC-120
crane in the “Cougar” configuration – can cut panels
with a dimension of 2,800x800 mm; the hydromill
capacity in this configuration is equivalent to 58
m of depth for maximum thickness up to 1,400
mm. The DMS – Drilling Mate System developed
by Soilmec and installed on all rig models. DMS
is a stand alone computer unit that secures the
rig working survey displaying the machine main
function parameters as well as the drilling data.
For each foundation technology the DMS device is
completed by specific sensor and software package
implementation for hydromill diaphragm walling.
DMS is completed by a dual-axixs positioning
sensor that controls the panel geometry in respect
to the depth. Vertical corrections are made possible
thanks to mobile flaps located on the main body,
variable rotation speed of excavation discs and a
patented inclination system that ensures optimal
orientation along the three main axis.
Bruno Bettini
ldP technical manager – member
of Soilmec technical committee
I joined Soilmec in January 1987, after
few other short work experiences;
therefore my entry in Soilmec was my
first real designer job. After a first period
where I was mainly concerned with
structural calculations, I took on more
responsibility of real projects, starting
with equipment such as buckets, tools,
cranes and then with complete rigs.
This path led me to run, today, a design
group which manages a whole range
of products, that is, the large diameter
vertical drilling rigs.
Therefore, a relevant range of rigs,
from 25 to 150 tons, with each rig
being destined to perform specific
applications and based on different
drilling technologies.
During my 25 years in Soilmec I
witnessed important changes inside the
company. As a matter of fact, when I
started working the number of produced
models was relatively contained, the
offered range was limited and the
same design activity was much more
fractioned than what it is today. Also the
technological and the performing level
of the rigs was obviously different; it’s
sufficient to think that, at that time, the
most requested models were offering
performances that now are already
guaranteed by the lower intermediate
range models. But what was different
The success of a rig is mainly due to
a thorough design which focuses on
performance, reliability and capability of
being suitable for various job site situations.
Often, suggestions inspired by the daily
experiences of the users are adopted and,
once they have been interpreted, they are
was also the overall formulation of
the designing work which, once, was
mainly based on the requirements
of a particular client or a specific site
problem; these were the factors which
led to solutions that, in the most
fortunate cases, were introduced on
different models. Today these starting
points are still very important but since
Soilmec has now a sound leadership in
the market, the planning and productive
philosophy that is adopted obeys to a
mass productive industrial logic, with
the aim of creating and developing an
organic range, capable of meeting the
requirements of a wide range market.
Obviously, within an international point
of view involves the need for taking
into account the specific features of
each single local market as well as
the habits of its operators, although
always in the view of an industrialized
production. For this reason, the
planning philosophy we are adopting
today envisages the widest possibilities
in terms of customization of fittings,
always starting from a central body
made of a drilling unit and the bearing
rig, in order to point out the concept of
multifunctionality which is the core of
each popular Soilmec model.
The job site is undoubtedly a source of
ideas and hints that is incomparable,
besides being an excellent training place.
If I go back to the steps of my history
About my history
in Soilmec, I must
admit that the
most meaningful
and thrilling
recollections are
those linked to
the experiences
in the job site
translated into gradual improvements and
even into completely new solutions. In these
pages, you can meet two men who have been
working in this delicate “fire line” for many
years, in an area where the theory of the project
has to face the praxis of the job site every day.
And innovation is the password.
meaningful and thrilling recollections
are just those linked to the experiences
in the field: a problem to solve, a working
situation that was initially unexpected…
facing them with determination and a
team working attitude turned them into
unforgettable experiences, making them
a source of professional enrichment that
is incredibly important.
Over these past 25 years I have been
involved in many projects which I still
remember with pleasure and pride.
Among these, I would like to mention a
rig that was a little revolution in itself,
the drill rig R-825, perhaps the first
Soilmec model which focused on
multifunctionality as the core of its
project. It’s a large diameter drill rig
that can work in CFA or CSP mode,
but which can be quickly turned into a
crane thanks to its peculiar lattice boom
which, at that time, was a real novelty
for Soilmec. Another model which has
lasted in time although changed in so
many ways, and born out of a number of
hints received from users, on which I was
asked to work just after my first year in
the company: the drill rig R-312. This rig
was incredibly successful in the Italian
market, it underwent two subsequent
restyling processes before becoming the
current SR-30 that is still produced in
several dozens of units per year.
In Soilmec we never have the time to
rest; it’s not in our DNA. As a matter of
fact, the design team which I coordinate
was requested to carry out a particularly
demanding task, the overall renewal
of the large diameter drill rig range.
This renewal was due to the need for
updating the engines as per the new
directions for emissions, which Soilmec
took as an opportunity to perform an
overall restyling of the range. Currently,
two new models are being developed
and two others will follow shortly, within
a work plan which – by 2014 – will allow
us to boast a completely renewed range
which is aligned with the requirements
of the most demanding users.
Giovanni casadei
Hydromill and cranes technical
manager – member of Soilmec
technical committee
I started working at Soilmec in 1987
but I had already had the chance to
get in touch with the company while I
was working for others, in the field of
earth moving machines and particularly
of tracked excavators. At that time I
was always involved with the fitting out
of special rigs destined for particular
uses – such as rigs to be used in
steelworks, sawmills, railways and mines
and which, therefore, required even
remarkable changes in order to cope
with performances that were often quite
demanding.
During this experience I started to work
on the fitting out of excavators destined
for the drilling sector and it was just then
that I happened to know the Soilmec
world and, after a short time, I was
employed as a designer.
This passage was almost a natural
consequence and it immediately led me
to the firing line: as a matter of fact I
started designing drilling rigs; I began
with serial excavators produced by
some of the main builders of the time,
especially Caterpillar and Liebherr. It
was very demanding work but I was
really keen and I carried out my job with
the greatest enthusiasm during the
whole period of my professional path.
A path that still today allows me to
exploit this particular specialization but
which – in time – was also extended
to other types of equipment, such as
hydromills, a product niche that is very
special due to the specific requirements
in terms of performance and which is
extremely thrilling since it challenges
me every day with design problems to
solve.
In a few words, after nearly twenty-five
years in the company, I must admit that
the spurs and the enthusiasm are the
same as at the beginning.
At the same time many things have
changed of course, if we think about
those far away 80’s. The field of drilling
rigs was beginning to move its first
steps towards a goal which implied an
epochal technological turning point,
that is oil hydraulics, hence starting
to lose that merely mechanical feature
that had characterized it since the start.
A remarkable change which I directly
witnessed, after so many generations of
rigs and to which another revolutionary
passage followed, the implementation of
electronic management systems for the
rigs. This challenge is still confronting us,
aiming at achieving those levels of total
quality and reliability that the market
today requires. Today as it was in the
past, the attitude towards the job site
seen as the real test bench for men and
igs is the basis for these evolutions: a
source of ideas and sometimes, also of
problems. But in Soilmec we know how
to tackle problems in the right way, that
is, we listen carefully to the requirements
and then we commit ourselves 100%
in order to find concrete solutions and
answers. Both in case of clients who
are more oriented towards technology
and are continuously looking for the
latest innovation and also in the case
of the more traditional who, still today,
preferring the more basic rigs due to
their habit and mentality.
During my years in Soilmec I met many
customers, of both categories, and I can
state that my most best experiences and
those I recollect with utmost pleasure are
those linked to that direct relationship
with end users.
These experiences are obviously linked
to others which have more to do with
my job as designer and which, in time,
have allowed me to keep on nourishing
prestigious companies on the market, in
the joint effort to design rigs that can
be more and more performing as well as
reliable and multifunctional.
I am particularly proud of having taken
part in some of the most significant
projects developed by Soilmec over
the years, because each new rig has
been an occasion to improve my
professionalism which, still today, after
so many years, has to face another
important challenge: the renewal of
the hydromill range, a project which I
have been committed to for a couple of
The Veneto region of Italy will be offering the community a unique modern hospital
dedicated to severe diseases, strategically located close to Monselice, 18,000 population
town located at the south east border of the Euganean Hills. The area has a typical
volcanic cone landscape, with a substantial geothermic activity of hot springs and hot
mud which secures the traditional spa activity of the area. This is the reason why the
architects of new hospital project included the use of geothermal source energy.
At first glance of the hospital building plans, with its sea wave shaped roofs, it is clear that
the smart forms are not just a result of aesthetics, but a result of technological research. In
fact the “Nuovo Polo Ospedaliero Unico” having more than 600 bed capacity, has been
designed from scratch as a structure offering flexible space, to be easily modified to integrate
40 km of compact piles for Monselice hospital
by François Caillat, Marketing
Director Soilmec S.p.A.
Project of Monselice new hospital.
The geology of the site is characterized by the presence of fine sand and silts, silt
clay and fine to medium density sand (STP up to 45 blows) with the water table
being approximately 1 m below ground level. According to the soil conditions and in
consideration of the low cost resulting from the absence of excavation spoil, compact
piles were chosen as the method to construct the piles for the buildings foundations.
The project consists of the execution of 40 km of 600 mm diameter displacement piles
ranging from 17 m to 24 m depth. Compared to classical CFA piles, the compact pile
(or displacement pile) is executed without any soil extraction, by means of a special tool
mounted at the top of a flightless drilling rod string. The displacement pile tool consists of
two main sections allowing in the same time drilling and compaction action. In practice, the
soil is excavated from the centre flight by the tool drilling section and then displaced and
compacted laterally to the hole walls by the compacting section. Above the compacting
section there is a counter flight which brings soils falling down the hole walls to the
compacting section. As in the CFA method the pile is concreted during drilling rod lifting
while rotating clockwise, but without the soil extraction. According to soil conditions,
tools to be chosen are cylindrical or conical shaped, provided with long or short drilling
and compaction sections
In consideration of available power torque and crowd requirements the 90 t approx.
Soilmec SR-80 model, has been selected by Trevi to carry out the piles. The SR-80,
part of the SR Series, mounted on a Soilmec base machine, has been designed for
multipurpose applications. In fact the SR-80 can be easily converted from kelly version
to CFA, displacement pile and cased augered pile configuration. The 330 kW, 320 kN
crowd force and 292 kNm torque specification securees the rig production capability.
At the Monselice hospital project the DP piles are not just working as foundations, they
are also geothermal wells. In fact after concreting, a geothermal loop is installed inside the
reinforced cage and then finally pushed into the concrete. The thermal exchange between
the surrounding soil and the concrete piles are eased by the water table located immediately
under ground level. For easy connection with the future slab, concrete rings are placed on
top of the piles to compensate for the difference between ground and slab level.
The hole drilling is completed very quickly, between 7 to 8 minutes, but the concreting
and especially the reinforcement cage preparation with the installation of the
geothermal loop requires more time. Consequently, the pile execution average duration
is therefore 30 minutes.
As all Soilmec rigs, SR-80 is fitted with DMS system which allows beside the survey of
machine functioning parameters (engine rpm, oil pressures, rotary torque, rotary rpm,
etc), to monitor, display and store (on USB key) the piling execution data. These last can
be processed by means of DMS PC software (to be installed on job site PC) under the
form of diagrams to document each pile.
The daily production, including the rig tracking phase between piles reaches 16 piles
per day. That corresponds to, considering an average pile depth of 20 m, 320 m a day
per unit. With such great production, considering the time dedicated to the geothermal
loop installation, the deadline for the delivery of this 165 million Euro project will
be completed on time. The Monselice Hospital will offer to the area one of the most
modern and thermally efficient structures in the country, giving the human necessity
of space, light and comfort combined with the most updated technological means and
respecting the natural landscape and the environment.

8,420 m of secant cased augered piles drilled
in Hamilton Harbour project, Australia
Hamilton, located on the Brisbane River, is an inner northern suburb of Brisbane in
Queensland, Australia. The Hamilton Development project designed by Cox Rayner
Architects assisted by Robert Bird Group for the structural engineering is dedicated to
mixed use: commercial, retail and residential. It includes three residential towers and
two commercial towers with retail facilities at ground level. Parking lots on the street
are supplemented by a basement car park. Hamilton Harbour Developments Pty Ltd
(joint venture between Devine Limited and Leighton Properties) entrusted Frankipile
Australia with the design and the foundation works for the two high rise residential
towers of 480 apartments and an 850 space, 4-level, basement car park.
The water table, originally located at 3-4 m below ground level, was drawn down. From
the ground level, up to 10 m deep, soil consists of stiff clay. Below this level, up to 15
m, the clay is interrupted by sandy horizons and then clay consistency shifts to very stiff.
The residential towers were piled with a combination of precast piles 24 m deep and
26 m continuous flight auger piles (CFA).
For the basement car park, Frankipile Australia adopted for the first time the solution
consisting in constructing the walls using cased augered piles (CAP) in secant
configuration. Five hundred and twenty piles were installed with an outer casing drilled
14 m deep and an auger drilled below the casing up to 26 m deep. For correct pile
spotting, a guide wall was constructed with polystyrene block outs, which provided
a sleeve for the positioning of the outer casing prior to drilling, resulted in good pile
alignment and interlocking of the adjacent piles. Subsequently, as the staged excavation
of the basement progressed down to a final depth of 10 m, ground anchors and walling
systems were installed at two levels.
The Soilmec R-622HD, one of the rigs on site, was converted in CAP configuration
including second rotary head for casing rotation and winch crowd system for casing
driving and extraction. In addition, for safety purposes, the rig was fitted with a spoil
chute system mounted above the casing rotary head unit. 800 mm diameter, 16 m deep
cased secant piles were drilled using a 730 mm diameter inner auger string. The piles
were monitored for verticality and the results achieved highlighted that within the 14 m
casing depth there was a deviation of less than 40 mm (0.3%) and no more than 100
mm deviation from vertical below the casing depth.
The whole job site production achieved 842 m of piles. The average daily production was 116 m,
corresponding to about 3 piles of 16 m deep per drilling rig, with some peaks reaching
over 200 m per day or 6 piles per rig. With respect to the traditional secant pile method
consisting of using a drilling rig fitted with a kelly bar and completed with a casing
oscillator, the production improvement using the CAP method is approximately two
times quicker.
More and more, all over the word, especially for job sites located in urban areas, retaining
structures for underground garages or artificial galleries for underground passages using
the “cut and cover” method are being constructed using secant or tangent cased piles
instead of classical diaphragm walls excavated under bentonite mud. In such a way,
all difficulties and costs deriving, for example, from the obligation to transport spoils
polluted by bentonite in special dumps are avoided.
In recent years, slow production deriving from the use of an oscillator to carry out the
secant piles was building an obstacle due to the tendency to use equipment which has
been used in the past. Today, on the contrary, the CAP configuration that manufacturers
like Soilmec are proposing on their top range rigs, including the SR-65, SR-70, SR-80,
SR-90, SR-100 and SF-120, is paving the way for such an evolution.
High Speed Rail Network AV Line does far more than provide speedy mass transit to
thousands of people from Turin to Salerno. The new AV Line sets a new paradigm for
the application of creative and innovative ground engineering tools, techniques, and
technologies.
An estimated 20 percent or more of Italian High Speed Rail Network construction costs
were spent on ground engineering to control vibrations, deflections, and forces from
the trains; address scour at major water crossings; improve subsurface conditions along
at-grade tracks; construct noise barriers; tunnel through challenging rock formations;
and minimize visual impacts.
The subsequent solutions to resolve the numerous challenges serve as a valuable tool
to engineers and geotechnical experts around the world, particularly in U.S. states, such
as California, as transportation organizations embark on a new era in high-speed rail
The proposed California High-Speed Rail is expected to travel over 1,287 km,
connecting the state’s major metropolitan centers, including the San Francisco Bay
Area, Los Angeles, and San Diego, along seismically active zones, and near the some of
the state’s most precious environmental resources.
Much like Italy’s AV Line, California High-Speed Rail’s success will depend on the project
team’s ability to implement safe, reliable ground engineering techniques that effectively
deal with technical/economic constraints and regulatory/socio-environmental concerns.
The AV Line runs through Alpine rivers, seismically active zones, mountains, river plains,
and through some of the most densely populated cities in Europe, as well as some of
its most expensive real estate.
Under and over
The Italian High Speed Rail Network includes over 150 km of tunnels, 200 km of
viaducts and bridges, and 650 km of embankments and trenches. Due to noise and
land use concerns, Italy’s AV Line was constructed alongside the existing highways.
Because the Italian line is completely grade separated, all roadways, including on and
off ramps to the parallel highways, must go over or under the railway.
Similarly, current California high speed rail alternatives analyses indicate that engineers
expect a sizable portion of the California rail line to be built on elevated structures
throughout the various sections.
Typically, the mainline tunnels of the AV Line were constructed using a sequential
excavation method, which allows full-face inspection, advanced probing, consolidation,
treatment and stabilization ahead of the excavation, and instantaneous method
changes to be made in response to changing ground conditions and reactions.
Just as it is suited to the folded, complex geology of the Italian edge of the African
tectonic plate, this technology should be equally relevant in California.
In May 2011, the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded $2 billion in high-speed rail
significant federal backing and funding, other state and regional organizations are
Sr-80 lHr
new rotary rig for low-headroom space
new products
20
Last March the new
SR-80 LHR was exhibited
at Conexpo Las Vegas
show encountering
visitors great interest.
The new SR-80 LHR is a rotary rig specifically
designed to work in low-headroom space
Because of the continuous growth of urban areas, it has been necessary to examinate the
capacity of our rigs to work in low space conditions: under the power or the telephone
lines, inside preexisting structures, under the bridges etc. To meet this growing market
demand, Soilmec has developed a dedicated conversion low-headroom kit to be
mounted on the SR-65, SR-70 and SR-80 for large diameters and deep piles.
The new Soilmec SR-80 LHR rig is designed to be mounted on the SR-80 base
carrier. Therefore it can also be purchased as a simple kit, including a special
mast, a modified boom articulation and a new rotary group.
The base machine is powered by a compact V6-turbo Diesel engine, SR-80
type Deutz TCD 2015 V06. It is
HYDRaulic ROTaRY Rig lHR VERSiON
in compliance with the emission
standard (Tier III stage A and B)
and reaches a maximum rated
power of 330 kW at 1,900 rpm.
As other Soilmec rigs, the SR-
80 LHR is fitted with the Drilling
Mate System (DMS). It is a
system developed by Soilmec
for the monitoring and control
Technology
Focus
Soilmec has developed a
special modular mast for its LHR
hydraulic rotary rigs. According
to jobs requirements, four
different height configurations
can be chosen starting
from the base mast. Two
different additional sections
of one or two meters length
can be added. Thanks to this
modularity it is possible to
mount different kelly bars
to range from 23.0 m up to
60.9 m drilling depth. This
remarkable result is possible
using the new Soilmec ten
sections kelly bar.
and drilling data are displayed. As for other
Soilmec models the DMS system offers, as
an option, the possibility to be connected
via mobile network directly with the Soilmec
customer care server for live trouble shooting.
However the real innovative and specific
solutions developed for the SR-80 LHR are
the special rig drilling group, the new mast,
the new crowd system, the modified boom
articulation and the rotary.
The mast of modular type construction
ranges from 5.80 m to 9.80 m max length.
It allows to adapt the rig clearance in
safe conditions even in difficult and risky
situations (under the power lines for
example). The rotary group is designed
for dedicated ten sections Soilmec kelly bar passage and drive. The rotary reaches
250 kNm max torque and a max speed of 100 rpm. The crowd system includes a
strong chain that can transmit 230 kN pull up and pull down force. Thanks to these
characteristics the SR-80 LHR is suitable to drill very large bored piles up to a diameter
of 2,500 mm and 60.9 m max depth: an important result for a Low Headroom rig.
Finally, beside the usual features that ease the transport available on other Soilmec rigs
(side frame dismounting, counterweight self-mounting cylinders), the SR-80 LHR rotary
head offers the possibility to be dismounted for transport by four bolts that secure it on
the cradle. The rig alone w/o rotary head and counterweight weights only 40 t. The overall
concept of the SR-80 LHR leads to a high value product in the 70-80 t class.
The new SC-100 is an evolution of the pre-existing model,
which has already proven its reliability on site. The new
model integrates a whole string of improvements.
From the previous model, the new SC-100 release keeps the same Diesel engine
and winches.
The Diesel engine is still a Deutz 2015 that supplies a maximum rated power of 480
kW, while the free fall winch provides 304 kN line pull (first layer). The free fall winch
may be substituted by a controlled descent type offering 370 kN line pull capacity. The
SC-100 is available either in full hydraulic or electro-proportional versions; both are
fitted with two main pumps delivering 405 l/min. The electro-proportional hydraulic
plant version is the machine with the most important improvement. Control signals
pass from the cab controls to the cranes distributors through CANbus, securing
As on other Soilmec machines, the DMS system monitors in
real time, both the working state of the rig as well as the
main production data to be collected under the form of a
daily production report. With regard to the cab and bonnets,
improvements are not limited to design and restyling but
also safety and flexibility of use-hand rail mounted on the
top of the turret for example. To respect road transport
aiming to better precision and performances
DMS – Drilling Mate System – is a project born in the mid-90s with the aim of providing
to both operator and jobsite personnel, an active instrument to control and interact
with the machine (sensors, safety devices, diesel engine, drilling parameters).
DMS is designed with the following innovative characteristics:
• CAN OPEN bus,
• full colour touch screen suitable for the drilling field,
• diesel engine electronic control unit and machine parameters interface,
• easy troubleshooting by the operator,
• a 2 PLC redundant system, for superior reliability.
Thanks to DMS PC’s software all the data collected by the machine (drilling and
concreting/grouting parameters) can be displayed and processed by a PC, in order to
run jobsite reports, analyze production and processing, plan machine maintenance.
DMS Manager enables to control DMS remotely via radio, GSM/GPRS, Wi-Fi or satellite, as
if the operator were on board the machine. It is possible to visualize all the operation and
machine parameters, map positions and perform certain
DPS
The DPS has been designed to monitor the space
positioning of drilling used to create single-fluid
and bi-fluid jet grouting columns. Such monitoring
is crucial when creating bottom plugs and deep
waterproof screens. The DPS gives the inclination
and orientation values, the standard deviation value
for each of these values, the deviations calculated
as North-East coordinates and polar coordinates of
each stop, as well as the stop values.
Is assembled on the monitor bearing the nozzles with consequent drilling depth saving
and minor wears
It takes inclination measurements within a range of +/- 60 degrees compared to the
vertical line
It transmits the data by means of Bluetooth technology
The DPS is powered by an inside battery with a full charge duration of 180 hours in
Long Life mode (automatic ignition only during the drilling stop phase) and 50 hours in
continuous mode (continuous data recording while drilling)
It guarantees working pressures at 500 bar for the cement slurry, with an inside passage
of 25 mm and at 20 bar for the air, with a delivery of 20,000 l/m
The DPS’s battery can be easily replaced and is charged with a special recharger

Objective Quality in the working environment: with this goal, the Directors of the Trevi
Group in the presence of the mayor of Cesena, Mr. Paolo Lucchi, the Bishop, Monsignor
Douglas Regattieri and various civil and military personalities, have opened the new
productive unit of Soilmec on Monday 17th January. It’s a very innovative project,
based on safety standards, self-sustainable with regard to the energy source, with zero
pollution and aimed at increasing the quality in the working environment.
As a matter of fact, thanks to the combination between the geothermal system (system
at the floor level which exploits 80 probes up to 120 meters, capable of producing
up to 500 kW) and the photovoltaic system (over 1.700 panels for a total production
of 370 kW), the new productive unit covers about 8.000 square meters and is completely
self-sustainable as for its
energy need, with a pollution
rate which is almost null. The
took part in the event.
The new factory is located in Casella, near Asolo, and allows Soilmec and PSM to enter
into a new productive and strategic dimension: it covers an overall area of 14,000
square metres, 6,000 square metres of which are covered premises with over 1,000
square metres of offices; everything has been designed in order to optimize the space
and the most advanced managerial and productive technologies have been employed.
The factory is equipped with three overhead cranes, of 20 and 10 tons, a new painting
cab and an area dedicated to the tests. It has
been designed on the basis of the most recent
standards of productive management.
The plant complies with the maximum safety
criteria and assures an excellent and satisfying
working environment.
The wide areas available will facilitate the
assembly and the testing of even the biggest
tunnel rigs as well as the small and medium
sized drilling rigs, hence offering a range that
varies from 3 to 28 tons, the sectors where
Soilmec can boast experience as well as many
Piacenza, april 12 th -13 th 2011
Following the great success of the dealers meeting that took place in October 2010 for
the Water Division, Drillmec launched the first Oil&Gas Dealers Meeting. More than 40
dealers from over 20 countries met up, in order to compare notes on some of the most
relevant issues, to exchange ideas and to get a sneak overview of the many novelties.
Moreover, Mr. Stefano Angeli, Sales Director presented last year’s preliminary results
along with plans and strategies for future developments, in terms of product range,
distributive network and marketing.
The three keys which were at the center of this two-day meeting and which started
Drillmec President Mr. Cicognani presentation were “knowledge, keen and keep
sharing”: these three factors are the basis for success of a winning team and are the
Company’s driving force.
The program envisaged has also included a guided tour through the factory, including
the visit to HH simulator and Saipem rig AZ5947 which aroused great interest. This is
because they were able to “see with their own eyes” the investments the company
introduced over the past few years in order to face the new market challenges.
All participants contributed with great enthusiasm and the three intense days spent
together promoted a real team spirit among our dealers, encouraging the exchange
of ideas which is essential for the company growth. Due to the positive success and
appreciation both by the Drillmec staff and the whole dealers network, the event will
be regularly re-scheduled in the future, with the implementation of the improvements’
suggestions collected during the meeting.

an innovative
simulator
training
38
Drillmec invests in the most advanced technology in order
to guarantee the best training to its customers
Drillmec has always paid great care and attention to training. And not only its own
company staff. It’s easy to understand this if we consider that since the very beginning
of its own activities the company was concerned with the organization of specific
courses in order to instruct the technicians of the companies which were acquiring the
drilling rigs “made” in Piacenza.
Obviously, at the very beginning, pictures, maintenance manuals, felt tips and calendar
sheets were used in order to train the new customers about the use of the rigs. The
result was quite good, but the time involved was very long, so that design technicians
and specialized staff from the different production divisions were really burdened with
work. Later on, in order to improve the performance, the use of the projector was
introduced, and then the computer, and so on…
This attitude towards a continuous improvement, together with the need for developing
a system which could better meet the requirements
of the customers who were acquiring the new
hydraulic HH rigs, led Drillmec to think over the
current training project. Traditional training methods
were not sufficient any longer in order to guarantee
the required level of learning and therefore to
transform the technicians of conventional systems
into technicians who could cope with hydraulic
systems. It was necessary to have something more:
a simulator of a HH system.
Simulator control panel.

scientific seminar in Warsaw.
A considerable step, both from the
financial, logistic and managerial points
of view. An investment which would
have implied the complete revision of the
teaching method that had been applied
so far, especially with regard to HH. It was
necessary to consider the passage from
the classroom to the simulator, since
they were complementary. In Drillmec
we are use to facing big challenges, so
we immediately started to revise the
whole teaching material and to plan a
different training organization.
Obtained results have been very positive so far, especially according to the participants
who were wholly satisfied about the achieved outcome and the quality of the training
course. As a matter of fact, thanks to the use of the new simulator, it is possible to
live an experience which is very close to the real one and this allowed, on one side, to
reduce the time involved by training and, on the other side, to reach better results.
Drillmec is currently capable of carrying out a complete training course for six
people in just five working days, by alternating the teaching in the classroom with
the use of the simulator.
Prof. Z. Mlynarek (Poznan Technical University), Trevi,
Soilmec and Amago (Soilmec dealer in Poland) have
organized the first Trevi Group seminar in Warsaw, on
28th May 2011 at Intercontinental Hotel.
With this very first 2011 spring seminar edition,
dedicated to foundation engineering and ground
improvement, Trevi, Soilmec and Amago intention has been to create a technical
pause, allowing the people of the University, manufacturer and foundation companies
to exchange views on problems faced on job site, on new technologies and modern
solutions.
The presence of more than 80 attendees and their active participation in seminar
discussions have demonstrated that Professor Jamiolkowski enthusiasm and Soilmec-
Amago management intuition for promoting the event and establish a real partnership
between designers, manufacturer and contractors, have been fully justified.
Spring 2011 has been the very first Trevi Group seminar edition, but the success it has
obtained allows to predict that for the future, the seminar will become to be a tradition
