Home Page Career Help from the University and the GSB
By Caroline Karr, ’88
Associate dean of alumni affairs
and special events
Whether economic conditions are bright
or bleak, it’s always wise to be prepared.
Over the last few years, the markets have
taught us that change is constant and that
the best way to deal with it is to anticipate
it. As GSB graduates, we all have been wise
enough to navigate our careers; however,
the times have become less predictable
and we need to be on our toes more than
ever before.
Our hope is that each of you has weathered
the difficult economic times and that
you are happy and successful in whatever you
are doing. But whether you’re content or
facing challenges in your career, the GSB is
always here to support you. We have much
to offer in the area of career management,
wherever you live around the world.
The best place to start is the GSB Web
site at gsb.uchicago.edu/alumni. Some of the
New Vision, New Opportunities
Providing premier career education
to alumni has always been a goal of the
Office to Advance Career and Corporate
Alliances (OACCA), and to better reflect
this commitment, OACCA became the
Career Development Office (CDO) on
January 1. In addition to our new name,
we have launched this career column to
The CDO provides the following
Individual Career Coaching. This can help you
advance within your company, find a new
position, or make a complete career change.
Sessions can be conducted via phone from
strengthen the skills you need to succeed
in today’s marketplace. They give you an
The Bay Area chapter held its Business
Forecast Dinner on January 21
managing partner and CEO of
Stern Stewart & Co.; and John S.
In November 2002, two dozen
alumni from the classes of 1990
and later turned out in force to
watch the Chicago Bulls take on the
Golden State Warriors. While the
Bulls came within two points, the
Warriors pulled it out in the end,
reports Rajesh Krishnan, ’01. The GSB
alumni present were more fortunate,
as Iain Drummond, ’01, won a pair of
tickets to a future game and Erik
Marcher, ’01, won a T-shirt. “A great
time was had by all in the sparsely
populated arena,” said Krishnan, noting
that “the GSB cheering section
was typically louder than the sedate
Warriors fans.” Krishnan hopes to
make the outing an annual event. For
New York Chapter Honors Sherman R. Lewis Jr., ’64
For the second time in its 25-year history, the Chicago GSB New York
alumni club granted its distinguished alumnus award. In September 2002,
it was awarded to Sherman R. Lewis Jr., ’64 (above), vice chairman and director
of Lehman Brothers, who was honored for his volunteer efforts to help
the GSB and its New York alumni, as well as his success on Wall Street.
“When you speak with people about Sherman, you tend to get words
that describe character rather than titles and tenure,” Robert E. Kiernan III,
’87, told the audience. He described Lewis as a man of “intense passion,
immense integrity, boundless enthusiasm, focused perseverance, charm,
grace, and unswerving loyalty.”
Andrea Bass, ’78, said after the event that there was “no greater champion”
of the GSB’s New York club than Lewis, who helped draw speakers
including the late Nobel laureate Merton Miller. Lewis is an active member
of the Council on the Graduate School of Business, a group of top executives
that advises dean Edward A. Snyder on program issues and provides a
link between the academic and management communities.
Lewis has spent 29 years in various senior positions with Lehman
Brothers and its predecessor companies, including Shearson Lehman
Brothers, Shearson/American Express, and Loeb Rhoades & Company.
He has held his current position since 1993.—P.B.
Wine with Weil: Professor Roman Weil led a wine tasting for alumni at the Racquet Club of Philadelphia in the fall
as part of a research project he is conducting to determine whether individuals can distinguish between reserve
and regular wines.
seminar also was part of a research
project in which Weil determined
whether individuals can distinguish
between regular and reserve vintages
and, if so, if they really prefer the
reserve (or more expensive) variety.
Shandor writes, “Weil says he can
easily save lots of Americans lots
of money because in his studies,
Americans cannot tell the difference
between reserve and regular wines.
And even when they do, they are as
likely to prefer the regular vintage.”
Tas writes: “The Belgian alumni held
their annual General Assembly on
June 13, 2002, in the brewery of
Hoegaarden, the famous Belgian
white beer. After reviewing the
achievements of the past year and a
look ahead, the current president and
his committee were unanimously
reelected for another term. When the
formalities were over, we toured the
Hoegaarden Brewery and discovered
the different stages of the brewing
process—which included free beer
tasting! This event celebrated a successful
year (2001–2002) for the Belgian
chapter. Our Business Forecast
Dinner in Brussels in February 2002
is especially worth mentioning, as we
had a record attendance and dean
Edward A. Snyder honored the Belgian
Before the summer recess, a dozen
alumni attended a talk by chapter
president Ruiz-Morales, who also is
president of the Clavijo-Tamerlane
Association of Spanish-Uzbek
Friendship. He presented “Leadership
Secrets of the Great Tamerlane,
as Narrated by Castilian Ambassador
Ruy González de Clavijo in His Mission
to Samarkand, 1403–1406.”
Ruiz-Morales reports: “Tamerlane,
the second-largest conqueror
of the second millennium after
Genghis Khan, had a highly effective
business philosophy with which he
built his empire from Moscow to
Cairo, from Istanbul to Delhi, from
Baghdad to Samarkand. Most of his
methods would today be termed
politically incorrect, like chopping
Oktoberfest in Asia: Alumni gathered for a fall pub event sponsored by AXP-1. Pictured above are 2002 graduates
Swee Nee Tay, Seak Sze Tan, David Tan, Thomas Jakob and his wife, Valerie, and Stella Lau.
cities that refused to surrender
immediately to his demands. Still,
his impressive empirewide communications
system, his just-in-time
weapons-manufacturing facilities,
his scheme of highly centralized
controls with highly decentralized
decision making, and his policy of
joint ventures and revenue sharing
with adjacent kingdoms and fiefdoms
were all forerunners of today’s
modern multinational company.
“Clavijo’s book contains memorable
lessons on policy making,
diplomacy, negotiation, and strategy.
The session was the second of a
series where we mingle business
topics with pure leadership topics.
Thus, following talks on e-business,
new ventures in retailing, and an
upcoming talk by the chairman of
BBVA on corporate governance,
we also have scheduled a talk by a
manager of a major NGO charity
and a session by Chus Lago, the only
woman who has climbed Everest
alone and without oxygen.”
William H. Newman, widely regarded as one of the most influential thinkers
in the field of business strategy and management over the last century,
has died. Among his many achievements are the 10 books he authored,
including the first business textbooks on strategy and on basic management
