Over the last few years we have looked inside the numbers
of the major Winter Rodeos to see how success at those rodeos
correlates with making it to the NFR. For the purposes of our
statistical analysis we have use purely pre-NFR money earnings to
keep the earnings balanced as much as possible. In a quick review
of last years numbers, the Top 15 barrel racers won over 50% of
the money available at only 3 of the 9 major winter shows. In 2009,
Mary Burger won an amazing 60% of her money at the Winter
Rodeos with her big score at Houston making up the majority of
those earnings. Another Houston winner, Sheena Robbins used her
$28,000 earnings at Houston as 42% of her Pre-NFR earnings. In
that same year, Tammy Fischer used solid placings throughout the
winter to earn $20,575 (31%) of her earnings. In fact, 8 of the NFR
qualifi ers won 20% or more of their yearly earnings in this small 9
rodeo window, so the Winter Rodeos were defi nitely an important
stepping stone towards the NFR in 2009. Would they be again for
the 2010 NFR qualifi ers?
