The global Complex Equipment Industry has 

been growing significantly as a result of an 

expanding market for electronic appliances, 

coupled with an increase in the complexity 

of electronic configurations. Constant “costdown” 

pressure as well as the need to be near 

customers - Asia is the fastest growing market 

for electronics, has resulted in a surge of outsourcing 

activities to Asia. This presents good

The Complex Equipment Industry produces 

industrial machineries such as semiconductor 

front-end equipment and advanced machine 

tools. Such equipment has high intellectual 

property content and requires long design 

and production cycles. Driven by the strong 

growth of the Complex Equipment Industry, 

this sector in Singapore contributed to more 

than S$11 billion in manufacturing output 

in 2008, growing at a compounded annual 

growth rate of 12.7% since 2003. 

Situated in the heart of Asia, Singapore’s 

connectivity, diverse supplier base and wellestablished 

R&D infrastructure ensure that 

companies can easily source for critical 

materials and components in the region. The 

Complex Equipment Industry requires its 

suppliers to have strong systems integration 

capabilities and provide electromechanical 

solutions to its customers. SEDB aims 

to deepen the capabilities of Singaporebased

manufacturing services (EMS) or mechanical

OVERVIEW OF SINGAPORE’S 

COMPLEX EQUIPMENT 

INDUSTRY 

The Complex Equipment Industry refers to 

industrial equipment whose manufacturing 

process mainly involves (1) high mix variation, 

(2) long design/production cycles, and (3) a deep 

bill of materials (more than 1,000 component 

items). Examples of complex equipment include 

semiconductor equipment, electronics assembly 

equipment, advanced machine tools, as well 

as other highly specialized machineries such 

as co-ordinate measuring machines, analytical 

equipment and advanced packaging equipment. 

Industry Trends 

The shift of complex manufacturing to Asia makes 

it one of the biggest markets for the Complex 

Equipment Industry, with a share of 70% of 

the semiconductor equipment and 50% of the 

machine tool market in 2006. Furthermore, Asia 

is growing as an attractive location for sourcing 

of components and modules which meets the 

industry’ high dependence on outsourcing. Lastly, 

the growth of skilled engineering talent in Asia 

also provides complex equipment companies 

opportunities for production and engineering 

cost reduction. 

Quality and reliability of complex equipment are 

critical because failure of complex equipment 

can be very expensive. This suits Singapore’s 

brand as a trusted hub for manufacturing and

and respect for intellectual property protection. 

In addition, our highly skilled and productive 

workforce has the capability to host complex 

equipment manufacturing activities which require 

sophisticated integration skills. Lastly, our strong 

physical connectivity allows OEMs to manage 

their supply chain efficiently, and provide just-intime 

delivery as well as prompt service to their 

customers. 

Conclusion 

Singapore today is a global leader in backend 

semiconductor equipment such as wire bonders 

and auto-insertion equipment, with more than 

10% of global output. In recent years, Singapore 

has attracted new complex equipment projects 

including Applied Materials’ Singapore Operations 

Centre for the manufacture of semiconductor 

equipment and Makino’s International R&D Centre 

in Singapore for machine tools. 

The Complex Equipment Industry in Asia is poised 

to grow, presenting new business opportunities to 

our suppliers. Singapore will continue to strengthen 

its Complex Equipment Industry, develop its 

infrastructure, and build up its talent pool. This 

will enable Singapore to be the essential hub and

Established in 1981, Avi-Tech Electronics has 

grown to become a leading one-stop total burnin

At its 3,662 sq m (39,417 sq ft) fully integrated 

plant in Singapore, Taimaru houses over 45 

units of specialised machines. These include
